Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

"Eyes cannot see with their own light, the light must come from the outside."

Thought provoking title, ultimate dialogues and power play to satisfy pride and feed ignorance leaves the reader with an unnerving perspective, evoking the deepest spirit to reappraise the value of the very pure, all powerful love over religious customs.

The play, “Sacrifice” explores the conflict between religion and secularism. Raghupati is a high priest, who sets himself in opposition to Govinda, who abolishes sacrifice to the practices of sacrifice to Kali. Govinda states, “For a man loses his humanity when it concerns his gods.” The ending of the play is fairly complex, and I don’t want to give it away in a review. This is a really good play, and worthy of study.

In "Sacrifice", Rabindranath Tagore's prowess as a playwright can be seen in full display, flourishing in every line. In the play, Tagore provides his readers with astonishing perspectives on matters of utmost profundity: Religion, Authority, Rights and the ideas of Sacrifice, Obedience, Duty and Beliefs.
Brilliantly scripted characters, dialogues that thrive in fragility and scintillating strength, both at the same time, and, astounding simplicity of wisdom, together, inter-mingle to create a drama that leaves an indelible impact on the minds of the readers.

The Tagore of Gitanjali is found here as well.

In ‘Visarjan’ (Sacrifice), Tagore constructs ‘a tragic hero’ in the makeup of Raghupati, the Priest, who is pitted against the King in a vinegary conflict. The matter between them, which is the premise of the play, is the ceremonial sacrifice of animals before the Goddess Kali. The King’s proclamation announcing a summary proscription of sacrifice moves Raghupati to a violent remonstration which is at once heartfelt and decorous. But the King is obstinate. Monstrous in his wrath, Raghupati urges his devotee, Jaisimha, whom he has reared from infancy and whom he adores exceedingly, to slay the King to conciliate the Goddess. The culmination is reached when the disciple offers himself as a submission to the Goddess. Raghupati is absolutely disenchanted. The eternal strife between the temporal and the ecclesiastical realms continue ……

Follows a Kingdom ruled by King Govinda, a seemingly wise ruler who makes the controversial decision to ban religious sacrifice. He finds that it is immoral after hearing the pleas of Aparna, a poor subject of the King. This woman had her goat bled and sacrificed at the altar. And she felt much grief because she thought herself as a mother to this animal. Many of Govinda's subjects took issue with this change. Among them was the priest Raghupathi who we observe manipulating the subjects of Govinda in order to usurp the throne. Raghupathi supposed his wants under the guise of god to further his agenda. And he further manipulated other's base desires to get them to act in a way they normally would find immoral. Rather than holding skepticism and forging their own sense of right and wrong, they surrendered it to a singular religious figure.
This play shows the folly of blindly following God and disregarding your own morality. The characters constantly acted in ways they did not want to because of the cunning priest Raghupathi manipulating their dogmatism. Warns against dogmatic thinking.
