Four and a half stars. On her way back to Belles Corner for her ex husband’s wedding to her cousin, Savannah Dey is pulled over by the sherrif of Adams Grove. Could things get any worse? However due to some quick thinking she does get provided with an excuse not to have to go back to Belles Corner but to write some articles for her editor Evelyn back in the city. The articles will be about the people of Adams Grove, the small town she is stuck in thanks to a parade plus some issues with her car. Her first target is about the curmudgeonly young sherrif who pulled her over. But the longer she is around the people of Adams Grove the more she is forced to revise her opinion. Everyone else thinks he is a hero. Sherrif Scott Calvin has made bad choices romantically in the past, falling for a city girl who hated the country. He is not prepared to make that mistake again yet for some reason he can’t get Savannah out of his mind. Scott’s mother longs for him to find love and settle down. She sets about playing matchmaker? And then past events cause problems and a mystery Savannah wants to solve. But will it do more harm? And can Savannah ever get rid of the load of guilt that plagues her life? This is book 6 in the series about Adams Grove. It made no difference that I had not read the others, I was quickly drawn into this story. I liked Savannah and Scott plus so many of the secondary characters in the town. Daphne, Brooke, Jenn and others. I went into this book not sure what to expect and ended up liking it a lot more than I expected. I am definitely interested in reading more by this author. Plenty of things happening, with new opportunities, friendships, romance and a mystery. An engaging read that many will love as I did.
Barbecue and Bad News by Nancy Naigle is a 2015 Montlake publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This 6th installment in the Adams Grove series starts off with a magical quality to it. Even if you have not read the other books in the series, ( and of course you will want to do that), you can read this one as a stand alone. I promise you will fall in love with Adams Grove, the quintessential small town you will never want to leave.
Savannah Dey was headed to her ex-husband's wedding, driving from DC to the small town where she grew up, dreading it every mile of the way. To put the cherry on the cake, she gets pulled over in Adam's Grove for going seven miles over the speed limit, then finds herself stuck there for a while. While this development was very frustrating, it could be just what Savannah needs to put the past behind her once and for all and look forward to a new future with a clean slate.
The sheriff of Adams Grove Scott Calvin, can't believe the woman he pulled over has decided to extend her visit for a while and not only that, for some reason she gets under his skin in a big way. Sparks fly between the two causing the author and writer in Savannah to use her skill to exact revenge.
“Writers don't get mad, they get even.” 'So she couldn't kill him off in a novel, but she sure did just fry his butt in that article.... even if he'd never know it. Payback. Karma. Call it what you like, but that cranky sheriff just got his dose.'
While working on her new assignment, Savannah grows really close to the residents of Adams Grove which leads her to start wondering about a crime that many were trying to put behind them. But, was it really over? Were there a few loose ends to be tied up? Can Savannah convince Scott to look into it?
This is a charming story with a little mystery, a sweet romance and a lot of depth to it. Savannah carries around some heavy luggage and had never really dealt with her past. In Adams Grove she will meet some very special people and will begin to see she will have to face the past in order to have any hope of a happy future.
Despite the handsome Scott Calvin's issues with city girls, he could also change her mind about getting involved in another relationship, but, well, first she will have to deal with all that payback and karma she stirred up.
If you are in the mood for a sweet, light, contemporary heartwarming romance, this book has your name on it! 4 stars
Nancy Naigle, you have done it to me again. You pulled me into Adams Grove and I am not ready to leave. I have been a fan of Sheriff Scott Calvin since I read out of focus (my first Adams Grove book but the second in the series) so I was thrilled when I heard it was time for his story.
At first Savannah didn't seem like the person for a small town sheriff but the chemistry sure was there from the moment he stopped her for speeding. I loved the way little things kept mounting up for her as they seem to do in real life. Watching her get to know the people of the town was a delight as always and watching her grow as she opened herself up to letting more into her life made the chance for her and Scott seem reasonable and possible. The mystery this time wasn't as frightening as some have been but it was just as intriguing.
Thank you, Ms Naigle, for another warm and wonderful, tough, and humorous visit to one of my favorite towns and for the time with some of my favorite people. You are amazing.
Fantastic read!! If you love sweet small town romance this is definitely one you don't want to miss. Set in the fictional small town of Adams Grove, VA with all the fun quirky characters that bring the setting to life.
While on a dreaded trip home, Savannah Dey is stopped while speeding. Well, according to the sheriff. The very yummy handsome sheriff. After hearing her tale of woe he lets her off with a warning and sends her into Adams Grove to have her tire looked at. While there she is stuck in town due to a parade. Yep, a parade! Since she couldn't get out of town in time for the event she was heading home for she decides to stick around Adams Grove for a while. That's when things really get interesting!!
Like I said you don't want to miss this one. Filled with humor, hope, and a lot of love. I highly recommend it.
I must confess that this is my first book by Nancy Naigle. I have discovered that I really enjoy Nancy's writing style. I wondered if I could get into this Adams Grove novel without having the previous five but it was not a problem. It can easily stand alone.
I enjoyed reading about the two main characters, Scott and Savannah, as well as all the people around them. The town of Adams Grove sounds quite delightful. Barbecue and Bad News is a good romance. It also had some elements of a mystery.
I am going to have to add Nancy Naigle to my list of favorite romance authors! I really enjoyed Barbecue and Bad News and if you enjoy a good romance then you will too! Barbecue and Bad News is available just in time for Valentine's Day in February. Now I need to read the first five books in the series!
Barbecue and Bad News is the sixth book in the Adams Grove series. It is well written and professionally edited.
Adams Grove is a small southern town in Virginia. When the heroine, a D.C. online newspaper columnist, is stopped for speeding she has no idea that she will end up staying in Adams Grove while her car is repaired. Her editor convinces her to stay longer to work on articles exposing the backwards ways of the small town. Much to the heroine's surprise she ends up loving the town, the town's people and the ticket writing sheriff.
The plot was predictable, but the southern sweetness of this novel made up for it. This is what I call a "feel good" novel. The characters are well developed and familiar.
Barbecue and Bad News can be read as a standalone. I recommend it as a non stressful, easy read.
I have had mixed feelings about the Adams Grove novels, but this is one of the best of the series. I am glad that Naigle has come back to give the Sheriff, Scott Clavin, his own HEA. Scott has had a large role in earlier books and I have really wanted him to find the right person for him. Savannah was a very relatable character for me. The story was one of the better mysteries in the Adams Gove series, which is typically the weaker part of these books.
I recommend this for anyone who loves a good story about a woman finding herself with some romance and mystery mixed in, you’ll love this book.
Barbecue and Bad News An Adams Grove Novel Book 6 (Book 6) Nancy Naigle Received an ARC for an honest review. Have never read this author before. If this book is any indication of her others, I have found a new author. Enjoyable, emotional and heartfelt.
I think this was my favorite book in this series. There was mystery, humor, and I loved Savannah's sassiness. I thought she and Scott made a great couple! Glad Sheriff Scott got his HEA ending!!
I read 1-5 and adored them, the characters, animals and stories of everyone's life. Scott and Savannah were the only 2 I was not nuts about. There was a separate storyline that Nacy snock in. I wished she'd have done more with it. Oh, you really don't have to read this series in order. Hope you lime them!
Barbecue and Bad News, An Adams Grove Novel Book 6 , Nancy Naigle Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Romance
My first visit to Adams Grove, and what fun it was! It didn’t matter that I’d not read any of the earlier books, as it’s one of those series where each book is a complete romance but has characters that connect it to other books. So in effect its a stand alone romance in a connected series – the connection being the town of Adams Grove. I liked Savannah, felt for her when she’s remembering how the people in the small town she left were harsh in their judgement of her after her parents died in a car accident. She still feels she’s to blame, even though it’s clear to anyone else that she wasn’t. She simply did what any sensible teenager would do, but in her mind the town blamed her and once she left for the city she’s never been back. You can’t outrun your past though, and she’s on her way to her first trip back for a family wedding, one of her cousins is marrying her ex....and then she gets stopped for speeding. The sheriff who stops her is good-looking, but she thinks he’s a jerk with no sense of humour. He lets her off a ticket though, and directs her into the nearest town for fuel. Then she finds herself stuck in the town while a parade passes giving her the perfect excuse to miss the wedding. She takes a few photos, texts them to the family along with a “sorry but...” message, and to while away the time she snaps an empty apartment notice and sends to her boss. Before she knows it her boss, who runs GINN – an internet newspaper, has arranged for her to stay for a short while and write a series of articles for the paper, starting with the sheriff stopping her for speeding. Savannah has been doing an anonymous advice column – not the usual type but a tongue in cheek, snarky one, for the past two years. It started as a joke but became so popular she’s stuck. Now Evelyn promises if the articles work out to take her off it. Somehow though the sarky way of writing seems to have become entranced in her, and her fist article doesn’t show the sheriff in a good light, making him out to be a small minded, redneck type. As she gets to know him she finds out that’s far from the truth. Scott is a lovely man, been burned though in the dating field and is cautious. There’s something about Savannah though that draws him in, despite the fact she’s City through and through, and he doesn't want to leave Adams Grove. He loves it there. loves his job, but somehow he and Savannah draw closer and closer. He knows she’s being cagey about her job, passing herself off as a writer and saying she’s doing research for a book...but he’s no idea she works for the paper that mocks towns like his, and the people in it. As Savannah gets to know the people she realises how unfairly she first judged them, and her ideas for the articles Evelyn wants are way off base as far as truth is concerned. She’s falling for Adam too, but knows once she tells him who she is everything will almost certainly end, so she keeps putting it off til finally she’s ready but...as always someone lets the cat out of the bag before she can explain and he’s furious.
There’s a host of other characters, Scott’s mum who want to open a tea shop, her neighbour in the next apartment Mike and his girl friend Brooke who runs the Yoga centre, and her friend Jenn, then there’s the owner of the local newspaper and his family. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, and she’s quickly discovering she feels at home there, and as they share their stories she just seems to fit right in. When the secrets come out though, and everything falls apart with Scott she’s lost, doesn't know what to do, feels she can’t put things right. She’s lost, distraught and I could feel her sorrow and for me that’s really necessary. I want to feel like crying with her!! All she can do though is work more on the puzzle of the Mural she, Jenn and Brooke were puzzling over. It seems to have hidden messages, and its also got some gruesome history behind it. Its a fun read, a great romance, a mystery to puzzle out, and a host of great characters. The small town feel is spot on, sometimes it does feel as if everyone knows things before they’ve happened, but when the chips are down then they rally round. Savannah gets some great support despite her mistakes, and I was just desperate to see how she and Scott could come through, how they could get past her first snap judgment mistakes.
Stars: Five, its a fun read, a good length and has more than just a simple romance in it. ARC supplied by Netgalley and publishers

"Barbecue and Bad News" by Nancy Naigle
What I liked about this novel.....
I liked this romantic read that seem to bring the reader full circle for this heroine Savannah who was in a place where no one wants to be and that is alone. As the story continues she is on the way to her home to attend her ex's wedding and now Savannah has been stopped by a cop for speeding. Maybe this was a good thing because now she wouldn't be able to get to this wedding. What my main question was doing all of this was why it necessary for her to attend her ex's wedding in the first place? Savannah hadn't been home in many year since her parents death and now it looks like she is having car problems....in another small town called Adams Grove. However, her boss thought with Savannah being a columnist this would be a good idea for her to dig up some information about this town and its sheriff that gave her the ticket. Now, I don't want to tell it all but I hope to have gotten your attention enough to check out this interesting read. Will Savannah become a better person after coming to this small town of Adams Grove after it is all said and done?
In this story, by marvelous author Nancy Naigle, Savannah Dey is heading back to Belles Corner, in North Carolina, where she was raised. Aunt Cathy had called her and told her that Savannah's ex-husband is being married to her cousin, and not to miss the wedding. Aunt Cathy has been like a mother to her since her parents had been killed in an auto accident when Savannah was 18 years old. She cannot refuse her, but she's not looking forward to the bad vibes she's sure to get from the small town residents. She's been living in northern Virginia for a long time working as a writer for GetItNowNews.com (GINN), where she was also the writer on the "Advice From Van" daily column. Only two people knew of her advice column, and she hoped to keep her name disconnected from the outlandish column that was very popular with readers. As she drives south, she's stopped by a local sheriff for speeding seven miles over the posted speed limit. She becomes exasperated as she's low on gas, running out of time, and then he points to a tire which is going flat on her tiny blue Smart Car. Sheriff Scott Calvin figures he won't ruin her day with a ticket, and he then advises she take the next exit into Adams Grove to get her gas and tire fixed. While waiting for the car services, she strolls to the nearby bake shop where she is again confronted by the Sheriff who surprises her by recommending the tasty bear claw pastry. She feels he is very good looking, strong, but just an ordinary, conceited small town sheriff, and can easily rattle his senses. He thinks she's a city gal, and he's not interested in her type. Needless to say, Savannah is not going to be in time for the wedding, and besides the mechanic says her brakes need some care. Her editor and friend at GINN lets her know she may find a story or two in that small town and tells her she'll foot the bill for a week or two. She finds a place to stay and can't stop thinking about the Sheriff. He had looked like someone she knew. Oh, it dawns on her. He resembles Matthew McConaughey! Well, now you know, folks, this is one great story! It really drew me in and is very compelling. This is a story of opposite attraction and guilty memories. Very well written, easy to read. My husband enjoyed reading this story, too. He's a big fan of Hallmark movies! This story would make a wonderful movie.
I love Adams Grove, seems like a great place to live, love, and work, and Nancy Naigle has a way of bringing the little town to life. Barbecue and Bad News is the sixth book in this series, and I have to admit it is also my favorite. The other books were all fantastic, but there was just something about this one, that was special. Savannah Dey is on her way home, a place she has not been in eight years, when she is pulled over by the handsome Sheriff Scott Calvin, of Adams Grove, for going seven miles over the speed limit! Since Savannah is a writer of sorts, her editor sets her up in this little town, to get information on small town life and on the handsome sheriff. In the beginning this all sounds great to Savannah, being able to poke fun at the small town and their sexy sheriff, in an online paper, but she never expected to actually love the town, the folks that live there, and Scott. By the time Savannah figures all this out, it maybe too late, because the good sheriff does not have patience or time to deal with city girls. He has had enough of them to last him a lifetime. I highly recommend this book, I laughed, cried, and wanted to pack my bags and head to Adams Grove. To Nancy, this was an awesome addition to the Adams Grove Series, and I could not help but notice how some very difficult times in your life, were intertwined in this story. Cannot wait on the next Adams Grove book!!
I received this book free from the Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This book was definitely a "shot in the dark" for me because I had never heard of this author and the story was way out of my gender. It took me a while to finally read it, but I am so very glad I did.
It seems that Nancy Naigle is a famous writer and this book is the sixth book in the Adam Groves series. Adam Groves is a small town in every way, and Savannah Dey, the heroine is from the place. She has been gone for eight years but has returned to attend her ex-husband's wedding.
On the way, she is given a speeding ticket from Sheriff Scott Calvin, who she finds very attractive. Savannah decides that a good way to get closer to the sheriff is to write a column poking fun at Adams Grove and the sheriff in a column for an online newspaper. Only one problem - Savannah has fallen in love with the town. Scott sees Savannah as a big city girl who hates living in a small town and will eventually return back to the big city.
This is a funny book that will make you laugh out loud at times, but there are also sad times. There is even a mystery involved. I was happily surprised that I enjoyed this book enough to want to read the other six books in the series. It seems that Sheriff Scott Calvin has been a part of the entire series so I am sure we are meeting people from her other books. I was fine reading it alone, but I am looking forward to starting from the beginning.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Nancy Naigle has a wonderful folksy style that lends beautifully to this book. The setting is a small rural town in Virginia, that Savannah ends up stuck in, after being held up by a town parade. She manages to extend her stay by promising her editor several stories about small town life. However, once Savanna settles in and begins to know the townsfolk, she finds that her preconceived notions about small town life have changed drastically. To boot, there is a hot town sheriff that she keeps bumping into—and who is likewise smitten by Savannah. This is a fantastic romance. I would give the book more than five stars if I could. Nancy Naigle has managed to give the reader a wonderful taste of small town life, while including a short, not too deep mystery and a wonderful love story. I have not read any other of her books, but I will in the future. In fact, I will go back and read the rest of the Adams Grove series, because I figure these book are as good or better than this one. I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a great story and particularly a good romance. The book reads easily and quickly and is well worth the effort. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
Great Book and Series, A Must Read! This is a great book; this is the sixth book in the Adams Grove Series by Nancy Naigle. This book is just as good if not better than the other books. Savannah Dey is on her way back to her home town to attend her ex-husbands wedding. She hasn't been home in eight years because of the guilt she has felt after her parent’s death. On the way to the wedding she is pulled over for speeding by the handsome sheriff of Adams Grove. Savannah takes a picture of a building for rent in Adams Grove as a joke to her editor about the small town. The next thing she knows is that her editor has rented the building for a week and asks Savannah to write some stories about the small town. Sheriff Scott Calvin has had the worst luck with city girls and is determined not to get involved with another city girl that is until he met Savannah. This is a sweet love story, with some humor, I love Scott’s mother. I love that I get to read more from the other characters from previous books and see how they are doing. This series makes me want to live in a small town. I can’t wait until the next book in this series comes out. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
This to me is a light read/listen easy to follow plot but there was a comedy of errors. Savannah after a tragic accident she lost her parents and she moved away from home thinking she was the worst person around and she finds herself on her way to a wedding between her ex husband and another loosely close family connection. She finds herself being stopped by the sheriff and the attraction between them is strong they almost feel like they already know each other. There is a big town event which means the town is on lockdown and which means she would not make the wedding. She tries to put the sheriff out of her mind but even though there is attraction she is a reporter and she penned out an article about him she later regrets. There are lots of misunderstandings and they have a big bust up and he reminds her that she has run away from her whole life.
Savannah goes back to her hometown and starts mending fences and She soon realises how much of the hurt and pain she was feeling was more about how she felt about herself. She decides to take a leap of faith and makes some changes, the missing part of her life is the man she hurt and we find out if they finally get back together.
For anyone who hasn't discovered Adam's Grove - you're in for a treat. This is the latest in a series of books featuring the residents of the small town. The formula for this book is an interesting one and includes many of the occupants previously seen in previous books. Having said that, this book does stand alone well, although, if you're like me, you may want to read the others before this one is published! This is the story of the Sheriff, Scott, and a newspaper reporter, Savannah. She is from another small town and has turned her back on it for personal reasons. He has been burned by previous relationships and they are cautious around each other. Neither is looking for a partner, but their feelings take over. There are interesting sub plots involving a mural and Scott.s mother, which add to the entertainment. Nancy's books are all well written and focus on romance in the old fashioned sense of the word. This is no exception. And makes a wonderful change from the intensely physical aspects of love that other writers insist on putting in their books. For me, long live small towns, good manners and mutual respect! Loved it :)
I love returning to Adams Grove, while reading this book you feel like you just want to pack up and move there. Pure southern hospitality.
Who knew when Savannah Dey was passing through Adam's Grove on the way to her ex husband's wedding that she would get pulled over by sheriff, Scott Calvin for a speeding ticket. Little did she know that she would end up in Adams Grove for a temporary assignment for a writing an article for her job. Can a big city girl enjoy the small town atmosphere and fall in love with the sheriff. When secrets come up, will it destroy the possibility.
This book has a sweet romance with an element of mystery, that will keep you turning the pages. Loved all the quirky town people. This is the sixth book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. A fair warning you will want to read the previous books after visiting Adams Grove.
I enjoyed Barbecue and Bad News a great deal. I was so glad Scott finally got at least an HFN ending. I would have liked it to be an HEA though. That is why I could not give this book 5 stars.
I think what I liked most about Savannah was that she was flawed, but finally faced how she had let her guilt lead her astray from her core values. Underneath it all, she was a compassionate and caring person. I loved the relationship she developed with Scott's mom.
As with the other books in this series, the pacing is excellent and the story held my interest from start to finish. If you enjoy your romance with a little mystery sprinkled in, then you will love this book. I guess this is the last book in this series. I have really enjoyed the characters in this book. Happy reading!
This book was FANTASTIC!!! I absolutely loved every minute of it. The story line is great. Who would not love stopping in a small town and falling in love with the sheriff, town and all the people?
From start to finish, I was laughing, crying and yelling! I felt every emotion from every character. Nancy Naigle really knows how to write in a way that brings the reader into the story!
The cover was not exciting in my opinion. I almost did not read this book because of the cover, but I decided to read it anyway and boy was I happy that I did!!
***This book was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an open and honest review***
Heartwarming story with a great happy ending. This book is full of inspiring morals like facing your fears, not giving up on your dreams, the importance of family, and that your roots will always be a part of you. The mystery of the mural with the hidden message is intriguing. There are a lot of secondary characters in the book and I had to go back when I couldn't remember who Conner was. Scott's thoughts of the past to introduce most of the secondary characters all at once at the beginning of the book led me to mix a few of them up. Other than that, this is a wonderful book.
Barbecue and Bad News is the 6th book in the Adams Grove series by Nancy Naigle. Savannah Dey is on her way to her ex-husbands wedding when she gets stopped by Sheriff Scott Calvin in Adams Grove for going over the speed limit. Instead of going to her ex's wedding Savannah stays in Adams Grove and we see sparks of a relationship start between Savannah and Scott. This story was so filled with community and small town charm. If you have not read the previous books in this series you will want to after reading this one. So happy to finally see Sheriiff Calvin get his story!
Savannah Dey, who hadn't been home since her parents' deaths, was on her way home to watch her cousin marry her ex-husband. While driving through Adams Grove, she is pulled over for speeding by Sheriff Scott Calvin. This happened to be the best day of her life. Due to a parade, her editor and the local newspaper, she is stuck in town for a while. So what if it gives her the chance to check out the local sheriff!
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
How can shedding tears bring me such joy? This is a delightful and thoroughly enjoyable book. I definitely want to read all the others in this series. I know I have read one or two and that they are stand-alones, but the writing drew me into the lives of these characters immediately and I did not want to leave until things were resolved. I am certain that will be how I feel about the rest of the Adams Grove group. Nancy Naigle reaches your heart and doesn't let go.
Barbecue and Bad News is the first book I have read by this author. I have found a new author, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will be looking for others by her. Scott and Savannah are a cute couple, a believable couple. Adams Grove is a little town that I can see myself living in. Walking down main street, waving to your neighbors, stopping at the local diner for coffee and gossip. A feel good read.
Awesome book. Being book four you sometime s think can the author keep your attention. SHE SURE CAN. Take the sheriff who always picks the wrong girl, add a newspaper girl with a hot storey, a missing person and the love a small town has to offer. Who will win and who will change. This story will bring tears to your eyes and open your heart until the last page is turned.
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Barbecue and Bad News. This was book 6 in the Adams Grove series and it was a real joy to read. I love the town of Adams Grove, love the people of Adams Grove. This book is about the Sheriff and he finally gets his due.. you wont be disapointed in Barbecue and Bad News... In fact you wont be disapointed in any of the Adams Grove books!!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
As a follower of the little community of Adams Grove, the reader gets caught up in the everyday happenings in the town. There's love, warmth and heartwarming trials going on. Love Naigle's southern tales.
