Magic Incarnate #5

A Measure of Gloom

Rate this book
It’s not every day you claw your way out of Hell.

Crystal Wynter has freed herself from the claws of Hell, but the Claymore she returns to is unrecognizable.

Demons, immoral magical beings, and criminals rule the day, and chaos reigns at night. No one is safe. No one has hope.

Try as she might, Crystal is spent. Hell stole so much form her. Life in general has dealt her terrible blows.

Maybe Claymore isn’t worth saving, and even if Crystal is willing to try, it just might take everything that she has left to offer.

What a fantastic book. This Series is spectacular! Definitely a must read in my option. Nicole's creative writing has no limits. A measure of gloom is book #5 in the series but it is so well written that you can even read it as a standalone, though I highly recommend you read them all. It's jammed packed with action and heart-throttling drama. Crystal goes to hell and back, literally. She finally survives hell leaving behind her heart, her love, to go home to hell on earth. She has these visions of Vince but she's not sure what to make of them. She struggles with the desire to save the world when really I think she wants to just give up. She stops viewing herself as human all together and I think that hurts Gavin, who loves her unconditionally. Then Wow! A magnificent ending!

In a sense I wasn’t ready to read this fifth book in the magic incarnate series by Ms. Nicole Zoltack it’s not because I don’t like where the story went or how far the characters have grown. In the last book one of my favorite characters die so there was this sort of apprehension to continue on with the series. Well I still wanted to finish the series since Ms. Zoltack writes wonderfully well and I knew that I was going to enjoy the story no matter where it went despite my apprehension. Even if you decide to read the story by itself it can standalone without getting lost since there is enough back story to suffice even though I have read the series in order. Ms. Zoltack also can tell an interesting captivating story that pulled our female protagonist out of hell back onto earth in her hometown. This hometown is not the one that she remembers not only is the town filled with crime the story is fraught with mayhem, destruction, desolation; gloom of course and war between mobs, criminals, witches, shamans and humans.
Crystal Wynter and her friend Gavin Venator have escaped the clutches of hell without Crystal’s boyfriend or best friend returning to their hometown of Claymore. Unfortunately this Claymore is not the same as they left it the town is filled with disorder, mayhem, destruction, criminals, mobs, humans, witches and shamans. Crystal went from being magic incarnate to losing her powers but still retaining some magical powers. Crystal was also part witch, part shaman and part human returning from hell becoming magic reincarnate. Can Crystal and Gavin save the town before it destroys itself or Crystal being magic reincarnate destroys the town anyway?
Crystal has significantly changed from the first book to this book which I didn’t know if I was ready for the cynical pessimistic disparaging Crystal. I think I missed the hopefulness that she carried in the other books about her situation, her friends and magic in general. I didn’t care for how she treated Gavin with such disregard or some of the minor characters but maybe she had suffered so much due to not only being in hell but losing her best friends then again Gavin had also been in hell and suffered too. In a sense I wanted to slap her because no one treats people that way despite going through all that. At first I didn’t really care for Gavin but in this book I couldn’t help but like him and feel somewhat sorry for him. Still I loved the story and can’t wait to see what happens in the last book even though I won’t be ready to say goodbye to the characters either.

Summary:
Crystal has been to Hell and back (literally). It is a good thing that Crystal is magic incarnated, because she is going to need it to clean up and rebuild her hometown of Claymore that has been destroyed. To accomplish her goal, she will have to count on her good friend and witch Gavin. Can Crystal truly control her magic? Will Crystal and Gavin rid Claymore of all that want to destroy it? Will Crystal and Gavin become more than just friends?( I am hoping)
Characters:
Crystal, magic incarnate, survive Hell and she is only a teenager.
Gavin, a witch who survived Hell right along side Crystal
Natalie, Gavin's younger sister, who their father passed all his witch hating and hunting skills to.

Final Thoughts A Measure of Gloom (Magic Incarnate #5) by Nicole Zoltack
Where to begin, lets start with the awesome witch names (Sapphire Belladonna, Silver Tiger, Amber Lynx, Azure Rose, Amethyst Wolf, Scarlet Blood.) I think I need a cool witch name. The overall theme of the book is dark, possibly end of the world, which is understandable the town is being over run by demons, witches, evil shamans, and if that was not enough criminals as well. Crystal bought back a little something from Hell what could easily change her if she is not careful. I loved the tension between Gavin and Crystal hoping it is the start of a slow burning romance. The book was fast paced and highly enjoyable. Even a savior needs to be saved.

The descriptions are stunning and the fifth piece of the whole story Nicole Zoltack created had me sucked in right from the start once again. Really great character development, a storyline that keeps readers engaged.
It is interesting watching Crystal figure out how to deal with all her feelings, power changes and hell on earth in Claymore.

So go ahead, grab your own one and enjoy your reading as much as I did.

This book was a gift and I freely offered to review it.

Crystal and Gavin have return home from Hell. During their time away Claymore has become unlivable the families able to have left. Acid rain and a fog have cover the town. Between the demons and the gangs that are trying to take over the town. Also. dealing with the witches and shamans fighting over the magic that is surrounding the town. Crystal is still learning the new powers that are replacing the ones she had when she first discover she was Magic Incarnate. She is finding out the hard way that the happiness she felt when she first discovered her powers have been replaced with the knowledge that she maybe the reason for what is happening in Claymore and to her friends, family and neighbors. The Age of Darkness is heading to Claymore and she may not be able to stop it.

I just read the whole series from start to finish and it was quite a journey. Once I started, I was eager to read more. I highly recommend the series.
It really is a great YA fantasy story with lots of surprises along the way.

The fifth book finds a very changed Crystal after returning from Hell and suffering so much. Her town is now a Hell on Earth and is full of demon and criminal activity. She has a hard time really handling the changes in the town and in herself and it is a dark time for them all.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

Hard to stop reading!

This is getting right to the end, and what lies ahead is despair. Don't get close to any of these characters because they are all subject to disappear. And not in a good way. I have committed so much time and effort t o this series, I have to see it to the end, but I really don't want to.
