Not all heroes are knights in shining armour. Nor are they all brooding and dark. Not all heroines need rescuing, and not all are broken. Some travel the globe and never find the love they're seeking. And some find it right next door.
I live in Devon. I'd like to say that I write by the sea, but this is Britain and its usually much too chilly. Plus, I prefer to be nearer to my kettle and the tea bags. I don't have any pets, only a son to keep fed and watered. I spend too much time in my imaginary worlds to keep a goldfish alive. When I'm not writing, I enjoy long walks along the beach or across the moors, and I have been known to ride on the back of a motorcycle on occasion. I'm pretty new to this whole writing thing, and still feel a little too embarrassed to call myself a writer. Luckily my muse doesn't care what I call myself and insists I write every day. I don't write romance, but I do write love stories. I don't obey the rules, because I don't know what they are, and I don't guarantee a happy ending – just an ending.
I loved so many things about this book, but I wish the romance was a bit hotter between Biff and Sasher. Maybe because he wasn’t done mourning his ex but still it was very lukewarm to me.
Absolutely loved this book. Sarah Osborne never disappoints. Her writing is about characters and their personal development. This new series is set in the UK and I am loving it! Sarah never forgets the characters she introduced in her previous books and they reappear in her current novel (Mouse and Nitro, Samson). Their stories continue. Biff and Sasher's story is a sweet story of adult (second time around) love. Sarah Osborne tells stories about real love with real issues, some of which we can all relate to. Highly recommended read.
So glad to spend some time with the Freaks again. Samson is my absolute favorite Freak and it was great to see him again. I was almost scared to finish because you never know what's going to happen, it's an awesome ride! I hope we get to see what's going to happen next, especially with Nitro and Mouse.
3.75 stars Def liked this one better the first. I'm also glad that we got a good dose of Mouse and Nitro in this book and I actually liked them better now. Hope there will be more
Familiar territory surrounded me within the first few paragraphs of Second Time Around. For reasons unknown, I had let The Freaks, England series slip off my radar. It was a gentler paced story in comparison to Itinerant Child, while maintaining the emotional connection shared between characters.
“When it comes to love, none of us know what we’re doing.”
Our man Biff is mourning the loss of his wife, Josie, to cancer. Her determination and efforts to look after Biff beyond the grave lightened the sadness of her death. It included organising her good friend and neighbour to look out for him. Notably, to step in and make sure he didn’t drink himself into an early grave. Her plan involved providing lists to key women with instructions on how to look out for her Old Man.
What I appreciated in this series was neither Mouse or Sasher were typical old lady candidates. Neither condoned the lifestyle of an Old Lady. What they both had in common was their respect and love for their men. The challenge was for their love to be worthy of making the compromises needed in order for their relationships to work. Not an easy choice nor a simple matter for a woman whose convictions and attitudes differed so much from the MC lifestyle.
How everyone dealt with the loss of Josie was varied. She was a valued Old Lady who left a considerable void in the club. The consensus among the other women in the MC was she was irreplaceable. Sasher and Biff had a massive mountain of opinions, personal grief and guilt to battle before they recognised their friendship growing into more. For an absent woman, Josie had a big impact on the story, causing me to smile on more than one occasion. It was easy to accept the acute loss of her and the respect she had garnered in her life.
As the SAA of the UK chapter of The Freaks, Biff’s current state of being has Nitro stepping in to cover his brother. This had the added bonus of continuing the story that began in the first book in this series, Itinerant Child. At times the drama facing the MC was sporadic. The action gave the opportunity for one of my favourite characters, Samson from the Freaks MC to join the fray in the UK. I loved the way he set the cat among the pigeons, stirring up Biff more than anyone else.
As much as I adored the characters, there were sections that were dealt with quicker than I anticipated and I thought they should have been expanded upon. I was caught up in the romance aspect more than the suspense side of the story. It was a minor observation that didn’t overshadow my enjoyment of spending time with interesting characters who endeared me to their plights.
Catching up with the Freaks was great. It surprised me Second Time Around had been idly sitting on my Kindle for me to read for so long. Then again, I have a twitchy 1-click habit that can’t resist a bargain or a new release from a favourite author. With over 700 books on my TBR shelf, an oversight here and there is bound to happen. Thank goodness I got a gentle nudge to read Biff’s story!
Well, Sarah Osborne, you did it again. Created a finely woven slice of MC life; not pretty and very real. Your stories are deep, emotional, at-times unkind and always give this reader pause for thought. I appreciate your attention to detail and am also glad that you don't get too in-depth about the more gruesome facts of the Freaks MC 'tasks'. I'm also gladdened to know that they aren't habitual killers but more-so; men who'll do away with the enemy if there is no other way to resolve the problem.
In this book we have Biff and Sasher. Biff is an MC member reeling from the loss of his wife Josie. They were childhood sweethearts and had been together a very long time. Losing her has him off his 'game', and he is having a rough time of it. Enter Sasher; a longtime friend to both himself and Josie. She is also his neighbor, living next door with her teenage son. Sasher has her own problems with a deadbeat ex and a son who is misbehaving. She is however, not a damsel in distress and is managing her life, problems, money issues, plus a workload that is beyond heavy. She's also helping Biff, on a daily basis.
Poor Biff; I felt sorry for the guy but at some point everyone has to come to terms with loss and work towards what their life is about without that loved one. He does some stupid crap, but at least his house is still standing! Josie is right there with him and is the personification of the 'compassionate friend'. I liked the give and take from these two which starts out more give from Sasher and more take from Biff. It slowly morphs however; into a more equal friendship and Biff starts giving more and helping Josie out. It's a plodding, slow, process, to love. Not insta-love. Not. One. Bit.
We get plenty of Nitro and Mouse in this story. They have quite a relationship but it becomes fraught with problems, and ultimately a heartrending occurrence that shakes them both, leaving their union in question. That's where the books ends and this reader wants to know how things move forth for them. Do they find one another again? Can Nitro get over his anger over what happened? Will Mouse 'heal' emotionally and come to accept her new limitation? Lots of questions here. Hope we get answers!
Overall; I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a good long read, as is the usual by our dear authoress. One thing about Sarah Osborne's writing is that I read her books with trepidation; not knowing if one of the main characters may get dead. This is where I mention that I loved having Samson in this book - love the man! It also brought the mention of Tiny, how he lived, how he died....and I'm back reading that book......my heart is hurting over Tiny, again. Sarah.....you do know how to tug at our hearts, bless you!
Thank you for a fabulous book. You don't put them out fast and I can tell by the detailed and very fine writing quality. As a writer; Ms. Sarah Osborne is in the top-ten of my favorite indie-writers. Thank you.
I really liked this book and rated it 4 stars. I deducted one star because it really could have stood a final edit. I read the first book in this series A Family Man (Freaks MC Book 1) and Itinerant Child: Freaks MC. England and liked them. But fair warning on Second Time Around, if you're a reader that doesn't like to read about the H dealing with grief over the first wife, that might be a trigger for you. SPOILERS The H is the SAA for the Freaks. He and his childhood sweetheart, Josie, were married for 21 years. She dies and the h, in this story, was also a childhood friend that grew up with them. Josie was the h's BFF. The h lives next door and has been helping the H since Josie's death. A year later a romance develops between the H/h. The story is sad and poignant at times while the two work through their feelings about Josie. There's a lot of grit and MC action with fights/deaths caused by an opposing club. If you've read any of the series, you may remember Samson . He goes to England to help straighten out the mess. I really like his character.
The other thing that threw me in this book was the fact it is written in the English vernacular spoken by people in England. Some of the words/phrases threw me off a little.
I extremely dislike finishing a book with more questions then answers. Biff and Sasher have a long long road ahead. It was nice seeing Samson but damn do I miss Tiny. (I'm still pissed about that whole stupid disappointing plot twist).
He reminded me of Tiny a bit. I had hoped that they might have child, but maybe in the future. I loved the writing as usual, but wanted more. Not sure what, lol, just kinda felt like I was missing something.
I loved this story. I wasn't sure what to expect as I didn't love the story before this or rather the characters. I really liked Biff in the previous story so getting more of him was great. This was heart breaking and joyful at the same time. I was happy for both Biff and Sasher. I will be the first to admit that although I really didn't care for Mouse or Nitro (as much ) in the previous book getting more of them in this one helped to understand them better and I actually liked Mouse in this one. We saw a grittier, angrier side of Nitro that wasn't in the previous and that was eye opening. This book was more along the lines of the first 3 books - more MC stuff - more grittiness and the best part was having more of Samson. My heart went out to Carter even though he wasn't the most likeable character - it was a really shitty hand he was dealt. There was also humor mixed in which always helps - Biff made me lol at times with what he would say and think in his head. I'm not sure if there are more books to come in this series - if there are I'm looking forward to reading them - if not then this was another great series from a great author from the FCP group.
Yes! This is more like it. A return to form or maybe because Samson featured do heavily.
This was a much more comfortable and absorbing read that the Itinerant Child. Everything about it was effortless.
I adored the story, fell in love with Biff. Enjoyed yet another refreshingly different and original female lead. Strong women are not all aggressive wannabe ball crushers and Sarah Osborne knows this. That said Sasher should definitely have clicked the mother in law one, but that’s just me.
I genuinely have found an author who I love and can match Lauren Gilley for characterisation.
I just hope there’s still some more of the Freaks to come
3.5 There were a lot of aspects of this book I enjoyed, but some things just bothered me. I particularly struggled with the lost love theme. If it's going to be done, I think Sarah Osborne did a fine job of it, but overall it's not my favorite theme.
Second, the editing of this book was rough. I would re-read a sentence a few times to understand what happened only to realize the sentence just didn't make sense.
As usual Sarah Osborne blew my mind. I love her books because they are REAL. Men cry, get hurt and admit when they are wrong. The life of bikers have consequences, and love is not instant, you grow into it.
This story kept me on my toes, never knowing what was going to happen. After reading Legacy I always keep my eyes open and stay on guard because I know that anything can happen, and SO didn´t disappoint me.
i´m looking foward to reading the next book and learn more about all my favorite characters. I wonder who the next leading character will be.
I loved that Samson was a big part of this story!!!!!! I still miss Tiny, though!!
On Biff. How I love you! More I love the way you love others. And this book guest stars Nitro and Mouse and Samson (!) and t h e Psycho Twins! How can you go wrong! More love story than ND but stuff happens!
Really enjoyed this book, great characters and really interesting storyline,I've enjoyed all of this authors book's and will be happy when she releases more
