"Sometimes at the precise moment, fate intercedes."
What do you do when everything that you thought you knew you wanted has been rocked, your world turned on it's axis? Have you ever wondered what would happen if Mr. Right walked into your life when you really didn't want him too? That's the predicament that Shayla finds herself in when John happens. Yes, that's what I said, when John happens... a man Shayla was sure she disliked and maybe even hated.
I absolutely LOVED this book. This amazingly heartfelt romance is the second installment in the Matthews/Clemmins series by Beverly Preston. Shayla's Story runs parallel to Beverly's first book No More Wasted Time, and it does not disappoint. Beverly does an unprecedented job in taking you on an emotional journey following the immediate bonding of two people that can't fight the attraction between them. Neither can rationalize what is transpiring, but neither can deny the pull they have to one another.
"I have to know why you make me feel this way."
This is a story about that moment, that chance. Do you take the familiar road and leave your life in it's mediocre state, or do you trust your instincts and listen to your heart?
"People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime."
The characters in this story are wonderfully laid out. I found myself wishing that this was my story, my life. I only wish that we all had the ability to mail oder a "John" of our own (snicker as you will). John is a completely swoon worthy male lead. He is perfect, but not without faults. He falls hard for Shayla and refuses to ask for too much, at least in the beginning. He realizes she has a past and a complicated life. What he doesn't realize is how much she will affect him, and how quickly he will fall for her.
"I want you to know you're not a reason or a season, Shay. You are the woman of a lifetime."
Beverly, Beverly, Beverly... you my dear have ROCKED this one out of all realms of any park!!! My hat is off to you!! Your writing is wonderfully descriptive. I have personally always wanted to visit the places in your books, but man if I've not seriously looked into airfare since reading them! I love the visuals you conjure in my imagination while reading your words. I love the emotions you bring to the forefront of my heart. I adore the tears you brought to my eyes! Thank you for an amazing experience and I for one hope you have another trip for your readers somewhere on the horizon!!!
"Everything that I am, everything that I have, every breath I take, belong to you."
Beverly Preston has done it again! I've been waiting for this book since reading (and loving!) "No More Wasted Time" and was not let down! Such a wonderfully written, sexy, yet romantic story. This book is "Shayla's Story" (hence the title), the niece of movie star Tom Clemmins (we met him in No More Wasted Time). Shayla is in a serious relationship with Mat - a member of an uber-political, unemotional, and career-oriented family. She feels like something is missing in her relationship, yet Mat completes nearly every category in her checklist of good guys. Without giving anything away, Shayla runs to Greece to clear her head. While there, she encounters someone that makes her feel like she's never felt before - but is she being silly? Is she throwing away the "right choice" in Mat? Ms. Preston throws us a few curveballs in this delicate, highly-charged, incredibly sexy, and simply romantic story about a group of people figuring out who has "come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime". If you haven't read "No More Wasted Time" you wouldn't HAVE to in order to understand this book - but it is wonderful, so I don't know why you wouldn't want to. Download it & "Shayla's Story" and find yourself lost in a world where life, maybe not easily and may not without heartbreak, but regardless, has a way of working itself out,
I will start by saying that I loved Beverly's first book in this series called No More Wasted Time and to truly enjoy this book to the fullest please read that one first! I can without a doubt say that she certainly has another winner on her hands. We were introduced to Shayla briefly in the first book and had only scrapped the surface. Shayla thought she knew what she wanted and had her life all mapped out. She has the "perfect man" well Mat is mostly perfect when he has time for her. She has a great job with wonderful perks. This belief is sent into a tailspin when she is invited to attend the wedding of her uncle in Greece and comes face to face with Tess's son John. Tess is the beautiful woman that her uncle is marrying. I loved the immediate attraction and pull they felt for each other. Beverly's ability to make you feel what her character's felt is truly amazing. Shayla would love to do nothing more than ignore the sparks she feels and ignore John, but he is relentless and works at wearing her down. He knows how he affects her and wants more than she has to offer. This was a beautiful journey. I loved watching Shayla finally figure out what she really needs and wants and who it needs to be with her on that path. I must say I was very surprised by the revelation and reveal of Mat. I certainly did not see that little twist coming! I can not wait to see where this family leads us next! It is a great series and a must read!!! I was gifted this work by the author for an honest review. ~~Michele McMullen~~
Beverly Preston. Captivating story. Shaylas Story Leading on from No More Wasted Time, Shayla is the niece and the PA of Tommy Cummins the world famous actor. Shayla is in a relationship with Mat but he seems to be into politics more than Shayla. Shayla has to go to her uncle Tommys wedding in Greece as he is marrying Tess who has two daughters and a son . The three of them and Shayla fly out to Greece by private jet, and that's when things develop between Shayla and tess"s son John . This is a brilliant story and I am sure you will enjoy following this story to the end. 5 stars. 26 August 2013.
Really enjoying this series. The story between Shayla and John was so sweet. I loved that they hit it off from the start and nothing got in the way of their feelings for each other. I also loved that there was not big falling out or break up. That was a nice change of pace from most romance stories. I was not expecting the scary moment at the end nor the surprise in the epilogue. I was a little thrown as to whether it was an April fools joke on the 2 things or not? Guess i'll find out in the next story:)
Loved this trip to Greece from the comfort of my favorite reading chair!
Shayla's story is as magical a love story as the destinations in the book. Beverly Preston takes us with Shayla from LA to Greece, Las Vegas, to the ski slopes of Colorado for the Christmas Holidays. I had trouble putting this book down. It is a must read!
I was so happy when the author contacted us about gifting Shayla’s Story in exchange for an honest review. I first had the opportunity to enjoy Beverly Preston’s works when I picked up No More Wasted Time some time early this year. I was more than impressed with the author’s writing style and found it refreshing to read about a more mature couple; much different from the many books out there right now. So, you could all imagine how much I was looking forward to her follow-up novel. I knew I was in for a treat.
Shayla’s Story is a cross over from No More Wasted Time. This novel takes us into Shayla’s (Tom’s niece and personal assistant) and John’s (Tess’ son) unexpected love story.
Shayla Clemmins- Beautiful and sweet whose painful past continues to loom over her. Now given a chance to start anew, she becomes stuck in a dull relationship with a straight laced, political figure boyfriend, Mathew Huntston. I thought that the author did a fantastic job expressing the dryness of their relationship and Shayla’s desperation a love of a lifetime “Mat stood aloof, patting her back mechanically.”
John Matthews- Rugged and full of vigor who oozes with so much sweetness, I almost had to schedule an appointment with my dentist to check for cavities.. Totally, cheesy but on point. I fell madly and deeply in love with his character. I turn giddy when I get a chance to add a book boyfriend to my list. Beverly outdid herself with how well she wrote his character. He’s far from the intense alpha male but the author manages to showcase his protectiveness. He is sexy and considerate. I was down on one knee, proposing by the end of the book.
Shayla and John have an instant chemistry. As a reader, I knew I was going to have the pleasure of seeing their connection unfold from the very first time they lay their eyes on each other. An attractive couple falling in love in one of the most breathtaking backdrop of Greece… What more can one ask for?!
One of the reasons Shayla leaves California is to take a breather from the pressures of her current relationship. What she didn’t count on is a weekend full of hot rumblings in the sheets with a man she never would have considered to be her “type.” What she doesn’t realize, is that John is exactly what she’s missing from her life.
“Sometimes the traits a man is missing can be just as crucial as the qualities he holds.”
Shayla’s reservations about John and what could come about their time together is the biggest hurdle that they face. I felt for the heroine’s internal battle. I think at one point in our lives, we’ve all experienced a time where we fought to admit that what was right in front of us is the real deal. Given her past and her current obstacles, she continues to deny that a man could really not be too good to be true. I felt the heaviness that the author portrays through Shayla’s character.
John, being the persistent and ever loving man that he is continues to surprise and amaze Shayla over the weekend that they share together. He weakens her resolve and eventually captures her heart with his ability to show her what true love is. The yin to her yang.
“Shayla took comfort in the safety of his arms. She knew he would never ask her to be what he needed her to be. This man would be happy letting her exist exactly how she was.”
There were some dialogue between John and Shayla that I felt were too mature for people their age which took me off beat for a bit and I do wish that the book shared a bit of Shayla’s past- it would have helped me connect with her character more.
However, I immensely enjoyed this book. Beverly Preston’s classic writing style is commendable. She’s able to write eloquent descriptions of scenes hot enough to boil pasta over. – “They traced each other’s bodies in long, sweeping strokes, filled with intuitive fixation. Each flexing chord and rope in his muscles brought a new thrill to her fingers. A rapacious growl hummed in her throat as her hands roamed lover over his chiseled stomach.” This author can write one hell of a love story! She’s able to give her readers characters that we can relate to and give them a romance we can all only dream of. A true modern wordsmith many hopeless romantics would give tackle hugs to. :)
I highly recommend this book. It will give you all a chance to meet John and manifest you into a swoonworthy mess.
Jillian - After reading No More Wasted Time I myself wanted to know more about both Shayla and John. I kind of had a hunch that this book would involve John somehow and boy am I glad it did!
Saffron - I really liked how they met on the plane! Man was there some chemistry there or what?
Jillian - It was instant!
Noemi - She really tried to dislike him but he made it to difficult lol
Saffron - He seemed to have some instinct about her and them
Jillian - There was really no way of not loving John. He is pretty much perfect.
Saffron - He was definitely better than that dillhole Mat. I REALLY really did not like him in the beginning.
Noemi - Oh I thought Mat was a tool in the beginning.
Jillian - Mat was such a toolbox! His mother was even worse!
Saffron - I like my word, Dillhole. lol
Jillian - Nice!
Saffron - Ok, seriously, his mother, there's one word that I would use for her and it's definitely not family friendly!
Jillian - Yeah I don't even say the word that I wanted to call her! She was just the worst kind of person. The only one that was normal was the Grandma.
Noemi - OMG She is such a tightass #$@%& that you could put a lump a coal up her butt and soon you'd get a diamond.
Jillian - Princess Cut!
Saffron - Loved her uncle Tommy too!
Jillian - I loved Tommy from No More Wasted Time. He was an amazing man. He didn't have to do the things he did for her but he took on the role as her father because hers was an awful man. He did so much for Tess and her kids too!
Noemi - Tommy was great. Shayla was the family he never had till he meet Tess. I'm glad he was able to find a true love.
Jillian -So Greece....Wow!
Noemi - Greece was WOW on so many levels lol
Saffron - Wow and Damn and... ummmm... unbelievable? What a perfect setting.
Jillian - Can we go to Greece?
Saffron - For whose wedding?
Noemi - Forget a wedding just book us the flight!!!
*ARC provided direct from the author in return for my honest review
This is the second book in the Matthews/Clemins family series although it can be read as a standalone, however I would suggest you read No More Wasted Time first as this will enhance the full glorious, blissful and heart wrenching experience of a read into a world where love and life are never taken for granted.
We were first introduced to Shayla in the first book – No More Wasted Time (Tess and Tommy’s story). Shayla has been working for her famous movie star uncle (Tommy) as his PA for the last ten years, ever since he took her under his wing after she escaped from her life of drink related violence at the hands of her father and the indifference of her mother. She is in a safe, if staid relationship with Mat, who is in the throes of the politics trail under the domineering steer of his mother. On paper Mat is everything that Shayla should need but his blasé behaviour towards her is secretly telling her something is missing. After a disastrous Thanksgiving with Mat and his family, she gladly welcomes an escape to her uncle’s surprising invitation to his wedding to Tess in Greece.
It is here on the private plane taking them to Greece that she meets Tess’ son John for the first time. The beautiful, protective John who she hates after he took his fists to her uncle when believing a gutter press article that Tommy was cheating on Tess. All had now been cleared up but Shayla still cannot get over the brute tactics she felt John undertook. However, after a frosty start, she gets to see first-hand how gentle and protective John is and she starts to see John as the person he really is.
Things start to hot up in Greece when the relationship starts to develop and Shayla is thrown into the passionate world that John creates for them. It is then she needs to decide – does she play it safe and go back to Mat or does she jump freely with her arms open wide into the unknown but tempting life that she knows John can offer?
Oh I absolutely loved this book! I first fell for John in the first book, loving the way he took over protecting his Mom, Tess and his sisters, JC and Tracey after their father died. To now see him in this book with Shayla, a very sexy and desirable man in his own right was breathtaking I loved the part where they both found out about their ages. I won't spoil it by revealing but it took the book up another notch for me. I was thinking “You go for it Shayla, just do it!” Fabulous!
The locations were another winner in this book. I could really feel I was back in Greece with the little white houses and the sea breezes wafting in the evening. But then we were transported to Christmas in Colorado and the snow. The book took you on a journey with a total spectrum of locations and atmosphere.
When reading the first book I remember wanting a little more angst and Beverly Preston did not disappoint in this book. A huge curveball was thrown right in just when you thought we were on our way to HEA land. Oh. Em. Gee. It was a ‘heart in the mouth’ moment thinking that something totally different to what I was expecting to happen.
I absolutely loved this book and was sad when it ended. A truly beautiful and amazing read.
I LOVED this book, in the top favorites for sure. Starting throughout the story I felt so bad for Shay. Mat is something else let me tell you and his mother. WOW, she is the ultimate lady dragon. When Shay sets of for her uncles wedding I was sooo excited! I wanted her to have an adventure and open up, get away from all the crap she left behind. She needed some time to realize, Mat isn`t what she needed. We meet John, although if you have read No More Wasted Time, then you have met him already and if you haven`t, I suggest you read it ;-) John is such a sweetheart, from the start of their interaction I immediately fall in love with him. I really love his sisters also and of course Tess and Tommy, everyone is wonderful. When John got her to open up and jump off the cliff I was jumping on the inside, this is exactly what Shayla needed! And that weekend is exactly what she needed. The wedding goes off without a hitch, except the tiny little photograph fiasco, I had a feeling about that. I`m sure you will also, but you will have to wait and see until the book ends to figure it out. Also a big shocker with Mat, I was blown away LOL. Wow, I really wish one thing was in the book though, when Shay told John. That would of been priceless!!! And of course Bev throws in a MAJOR thing in the book that makes your heart stop and makes you cry break out the ugly cry. Sadly that is all I will tell you ;-) You will have to read the book to find out how this love story ends! I promise, you will not want to miss this AMAZING book! So proud of Bevm such an amazing book! Thank you!
Some quotes I loved:
"Married? I always thought that boy was gay." (LAUGHED MY a$$ off)
"Sometimes the traits a man is missing can be just as crucial as the qualities he holds."
"You`re the best workout I`ve ever had and we just barely made it through warm up."
You need some help? I could wash your hair, shave your legs, relieve a little tension?`(I LOVE HIM, I want one!)
"No. You, Shayla, require an entirely new set of checklists."
"I haven`t used a line on you yet. With you everything seems to pour out,"
"Don`t you dare tell me you love me unless you plan on leaving Greece and coming home with me to Vegas. I`ll buy a house tomorrow!"
"I want you to know, you`re not a reason or a season, Shay. You are the woman of a lifetime. I know it will take a few days, but I`ll be waiting for your call."
"This ring represents a lifetime of a great love, a magical love that I only hoped to know and understand one day. Today is that day, Shay. I don`t need time to decipher if you`re the one. You are the one."`
"Everything I am, everything I have, every breath I take, belong to you."
"I remember. Don't think you`re getting out of marrying me. John Mathews. You`re stuck with me forever."
Shayla’s Story’ was one of those books that I was eagerly waiting for and after finishing I wasn’t disappointed, for me it was worth the wait. Shayla is the niece of Tom Clemmins who was featured in ‘No More Wasted Time’. I love how this story takes place at the same period as NMWT, but told from Shayla’s POV. Her back story is she is estranged from her family and went to live with her uncle Tommy as soon as she was able. A reason – On paper she has the perfect life. She is assistant to one of the top movie stars in the world. She has been dating Mat who is the perfect boyfriend from a very political family. Although Mat is reserved and into his political life he does treat Shayla well, but something is missing. I won’t reveal what happened with these two but at some stage Shayla decides to get away and attend the wedding of her uncle Tommy and fiance Tess Mathews, located in Greece. It is on the plane ride over that Shayla and John meet and the sparks were jumping off the pages between these two. A season - John is a bit of a hot head, a play hard kind of guy, but he is also very protective of his mom and sisters, which is such an endearing quality. During the wedding weekend these two basically fall in love. Who would not fall in love with someone you are attracted to while visiting a romantic country over a 2 day period? (It happened to me while visiting my future husband in Ireland and yes it was a quick visit). Shayla refuses to make any commitments about her future while in Greece because she still has a boyfriend at home and she wants to do the right thing, but this leaves John confused and angry as he wants Shayla now and doesn’t want her with anyone else. Not giving much away, Shayla confront’s Mat over his lack of affection for her and asks him do they have a future together. Mat comes to a a realization of his own. I really just want to tell you what happens next but I can’t. You have to read it yourself. A Lifetime - Beverly Preston loves the HEA and she makes that known so you can guess the outcome . It is beautiful, it is romantic, it is what you want as a reader. John is a book boyfriend you will grow to love. He is sexy and fun, loves the outdoors and is solid in his devotion to his mom and sisters and now, Shayla. The Epilogue was perfect and I admit I got a little teary eyed. I hope you all will love it as well.
I would recommend this book to others, no questions asked. It can be a standalone but I think you need to understand the story of John and you get more of him in ‘No More Wasted Time’. I love Beverly’s story telling and am looking forward to the remaining stories in the series.
***I RECEIVED AN ARC IN EXCHANGE OF AN HONEST REVIEW***
I really enjoyed this book. I read book 1 in this series, No More Wasted Time, a while back as a freebie I picked up on Amazon so when I saw there was a book 2 featuring Tom's assistant/niece, I jumped right on it and I was not disappointed. In this book, everyone is headed to Greece for the wedding of Tom and Tess.
Shayla is fed up with life. She feels like she is not as good as anyone and her supposed loving boyfriend, Mat, is too interested in his work and family to even notice. Mat and Shayla haven't been intimate in weeks. He is always traveling and never has time for her anymore. And if that isn't bad enough, his mother absolutely despises Shayla and will stop at nothing to tear them apart. When she feels like things couldn't get worse, Mat proposes to her in front of his family at Thanksgiving and she doesn't answer him. Mat is too interested in politics and gaining votes that he doesn't realize Shayla is not happy. Needing a break from him and her life, she packs up and runs to Greece for Tom and Tess's wedding. What she didn't expect was the sparks and chemistry that she and John have...
John is Tess's oldest child and son. His life has kind of been standstill and repetitive ever since he lost his father. He, his mother and his two sisters only had each other left so they stayed close together and John assumed the role of man of the house. Now that his mother is marrying Tom, he couldn't be happier and begins to live his life a little more freely. While in Greece, he and Shayla connect on all levels. When he finds out about her boyfriend and the proposal, he asks her to give him one weekend to prove they have chemistry and what it takes. Shayla eventually agrees and this is when the sparks started to fly!
Will Shayla finally leave the safety net of Mat and have a bright future with John? Will John push Shayla out of her comfort zone and prove to her he is worth the risk? Will John and Shayla finally get the happily every after they deserve?
I really enjoyed this book. John was so sweet, kind, caring, and total animal in bed! Shayla was also awesome and I really felt for her. She did not have the best childhood and all she wanted was to feel safe and loved. I love how John wanted to get to know her. I also loved how he waited for her because he knew what she had to do. There was a slight twist towards the end that had me on my toes hoping everything was good and thank goodness it all turned out ok!
I also loved the ending. Super freaking sweet and I can't wait for the next book in this series!
I Loved this book even more than the first! Seems to be a trend with me lately but its true. I LOVED getting to share Shayla’s and John’s story and how it developed. I found this story to be fun and I was enthralled form the start.
With the first book I wasn’t sure where it was going, but with this story I felt I knew the characters well enough form the first to makes well educated guesses on their decisions. It was really great to read and I Loved getting more from this world.
I love series that work their way through the stories of different family members and Beverly takes it to another level with this one. We are given a glance at the other side of a family during the time of the first book. It was a fun way to read it and It had a lot of great elements that kept me turning the pages for more.
Shayla is faced with some hard decisions. Her boyfriend is everything right on paper. He has the job, the family, the life, but she isn’t happy. Not really. With a last minute not desired proposal, and some crazy realizations Escaping to Greece is exactly what she needs. Its a breath of fresh air for her, and the view certainly doesn’t hurt, especially if it looks like John.
John knows from the moment he meets her that he wants Shayla, and he isn’t shy about telling her so, and her certainly sin’t shy about showing it. I really didn’t think I could feel more emotion in a scene than I did in book one, but the magic is worked again with these two.
Even with the story being a light romance, it still has is deep spots, and Shayla isn’t spared from the wrongdoings of other characters either. Someone is out to get her and is could turn her whole life upside down. She is faced with some tough decisions, but I really enjoyed watching her break the barriers that had been holding her down.
Another story full of finding love and forgiveness and really doing what is best for one’s self. Shayla’s has not had the easiest life and John is determined to better her future. Will she let him? You better read and see. I promise you wont be let down in any aspect with this book.
Ms. Preston again impressed me with her ability to vividly describe the settings in her books; whether it is water in Greece or the slopes in Colorado she transports the reader to these locations with her masterful use of words.
Book 2 in this family saga tells the story of Shayla Clemins, Tom niece and John Matthew, Tess’s son. Book 1 is No More Wasted Time and I highly suggest you read it first.
Shayla had a tough life growing up, her Uncle Tom took her in and she now works for him. As the book opens Shayla is with a man she thinks is everything she could ever want, stable, kind and well off.
That is until John Mathews walks into her life. I adored watching Shayla and John connect; not only does Shay experience emotions she has never felt before but she also sees a family connection she has never experienced. Shay watching John interact with his sisters warmed my heart, she sees what family really means and truly sees the man John is inside.
John is honest, protective, hot as all heck and wise beyond his years. This young man buried his Dad and stepped up to care for him Mom and sisters. I should also add Shayla finding out John’s real age made for a few very funny exchanges. John and Shay’s connection is something the reader will feel, it is hot, passionate and all encompassing.
Toward the end Ms. Preston had me gripping my kindle hoping things worked out…wishing that John and Shay will find there way back to each other, and no this statement is not what you think, it is not some formula we break up scenario that almost costs this couple everything… and Yes you are going to have to read it to find out what I am talking about.
I will say I loved the ending to this book… I had a smile from ear to ear; it left my heart happy and excited to read more about the Matthew/Clemins family. Ms. Preston has created a wonderful cast of characters that I look forward to continuing to read about as this family saga develops.
Beverly does it again. Shayla Clemmins, niece to one of Hollywood's leading men, Tom Clemmins, also his personal assistant (we meet Tom in No More Wasted Time). Tom has decided he is getting married in Greece and Shayla has to move heaven and earth to make it happen without the media finding out. While her personal life is in shambles, boyfriend of two years feels the need to propose at Thanksgiving in front of his family (yea, we don't like them) but she knows something is off and says she needs time to think. Perfect off to Greece for a week and maybe something will come to her. On the flight there, they have to stop off in Vegas to pick up Tess's 3 children, JC, Tracy and John. The minute John steps on the plane, the sexual tension is nuclear. She sees the man that punched her uncle in the face and John sees his lifetime. He asks for a weekend and she agrees and this turns out to be one of the best weekends of either their lives. John wants more, Shayla can't till she takes care of Mat and breaks it off with him if they want to move further in their relationship. When they get back to the states, they go their own ways but the one thing missing is the other and the feel it. John doesn't call or text and Shayla gets worried that he couldn't wait. Christmas comes and everyone heads to Tom & Tess's cabin in Colorado. Feelings reignite for these two and they are inseparable. Their story is one to find out why people come and go in our lives is it for a reason, a season or a lifetime. John has found his lifetime and proposes to Shayla while snowboarding but danger lurks these next chapters killed me and yes I will admit I jumped ahead to make sure it turned out the way I hoped it would (no judging) and it did plus so much more. Can't wait to see what Beverly has planned for the Clemmins/Matthews family.
Shayla’s story is amazing…the underlying theme the Mathew Family series has of family bond of love and living for the day, not wasting time on the what ifs. Life is too short; they all believe you must live for the here and now because IN life there are no guarantees. In the first book, we were able to meet the Mathew family. This book extends on with the same characters, but is focusing on the life of Shayla, Tom Clemmins niece and manager. She has what she believes to be a comfortable life with her boyfriend, but quickly realizes that she deserves something more. We learn more about the difficult childhood Shayla experienced and how coming to live and work with Tom has given her new hope and a fresh start. John Mathews’ is amazing. The gorgeous playboy, with an arrogant attitude and appears to think he is the object of every girls desire, or so Shayla thinks. John has been brought up in a wonderfully grounded family, where he was able to witness true love. But he was also there to witness how quick it can be taken away. John is a very kind, caring, protective (brother and son), young, and a hard worker. When John Mathew’s and Shayla travel to Greece for the wedding of Tom and Tess, neither one of them had any idea what they were in for. Shayla had no desire to get to know John; she automatically thought he was a jerk. But even with the first meeting, you could see that they were not going to stay away from each other. The chemistry was pulling them together, no matter how hard Shayla tried to stop it. Beverly Preston has done it again. This book is amazing! I loved reading about this family and the journey of discovery for Shayla and John is a wonderful story to be told. This book made me laugh and it made me cry, but the hardest part was to know it had to end. I can’t wait for the next installment of the Mathews/Clemmins Family Series.
When Shayla meets Tess’ kids on her uncle’s private jet, she is less than thrilled with John after the way he treated her uncle. Still, she can’t help noticing that he’s gorgeous, and has a playful little smirk when he looks at her. In a frustratingly boring relationship with a man who seems to have little interest in her, a romance was not something she was actively looking for. Like his mother, when John saw want he wanted, and had no problem going after it. And he really wanted Shayla.
John and Shayla’s romance runs concurrently with Tom and Tess’, but you have no clue in No Wasted Time. You got the feeling Shayla was less than happy with her boyfriend, and you knew John was a sexy protector who would make a lucky woman very happy, but they had no scenes together, and you had no idea this scorching hot love affair was going on behind the scenes. They can’t stay away from each other, and John says and does things that make you weak in the knees and even start to melt at times. He’s just so perfect (insert swoon here). Becoming the man of the house made John seem wise beyond his years, but he’s in fact a few years younger than Shayla (loved how this romance was again different from the norm that we see). John brought out a sexy and adventurous side of Shayla, and she started to realize how her childhood made her want to always play it safe. I usually am not a fan of instalove, but the connection between John and Shayla was believable and so strong, that I was certain they belonged together, even if Shayla wasn’t.
“I want you to know, you’re not a reason or a season, Shay. You are the woman of a lifetime. I know it will take a few days, but I’ll be waiting for your call.”
Wonderful story, and awesome epilogue, I am an official fan of the Mathews family series.
I really waited too long to read this story. I first fell in love with Beverly Preston’s book No More Wasted Time, book 1 in the Matthew Family series. It was one of those stories that were beautiful and relatable and very sexy. I knew that this book would most likely have me feeling all of those same things.
I love that Shayla is thirty years old, not the super young in their 20’s. Beverly writes mature characters and I like that. John the sexy as sin male is the younger man, but he had a maturity about him, not your typical party animal man whore. He was raised well and respects himself and women. I loved his protectiveness and his zest to go after want he wants and live in the moment. He is truthful with his feelings and the connection between the two was incredible. I really loved the communication of the characters.
This just a beautiful story of finding love when you least expect to and making hard but mature decisions in life. It is not a story full of crazy angst. I loved the beautiful moments, the fun family and friend dynamics and do not let me forget the amazing hot sex scenes. Wrap that up with Greece being the back drop and let your imagination sore. There are a few O.M.G. stop breathing moments that almost killed me but in the end I was left with a big smile.
If you are looking for a story to curl up with a blanket and fall in love, then I recommend Shayla’s story. It is a standalone story and the first book does not have to be read first. I do also highly recommend reading No More Wasted Time as well because it is also so wonderful and you might understand a little more of back story and some things that were mentioned throughout this book.
I'm on Cloud 9 right now! Beverly Preston doesn't disappoint with her second installment in the Mathews Family series. In this book we get to see Shayla and John's story, Shayla is the niece of Tom Clemmins and John is the son of Tess Mathews. Tess and Tom were the main characters in the first book of the series. I loved Shayla to pieces! She was warm, generous, funny, and extremely protective of her uncle. Shayla had a really rough childhood but she decided to leave that behind and seek the help of her uncle to start her new life. But don't confuse her for some shrinking violet, she's confident and she knows what she wants. She's a survivor in every sense of the word. John is still hurting from the death of his father a year ago and also his mother's subsequent breakdown. He's every girl's idea of Prince Charming (if Prince Charming had huge biceps and a six pack), which is just what Shayla needs to restore her trust in men. John loves and takes care of his family, he's protective, and he's sensitive. But don't let that fool you, that man is no wimp! Talk about your dominating alpha males!! John is a very confident man and because of this he's comfortable sharing his feelings and emotions with Shayla. The chemistry between these two is off the charts! The sex scenes were dynamic and scorching, way hotter then the first book. I loved watching Shayla and John fall in love...and they fell hard! I don't usually go for a whole whirlwind romance that happens over a short period of time, but because John was so open and expressive it added a sincerity to the plot that made love at first sight believable. Beverly Preston sure brought her A-game this time!
Shayla's Story is the second book in The Mathews/Clemmins Family Series by Beverly Preston. It follows the story of Shayla Clemmins and runs parallel with the first book in the series No More Wasted Time.
I absolutely loved this book! The writing is beautiful and is a fantastic follow-up to No More Wasted Time, which is a great read as well.
The story is very emotional and I found myself in tears along with the characters and smiling during the happy times. There is never a dull moment in this book and you find yourself compelled to keep turning pages waiting with bated breath to find out what's happening next. It has the right mix of love, lust, longing and drama. Is not overly long and it does not fall flat at any time.
All the characters in this book are extremely likeable, in particular the main characters in Shayla and John. Shayla is her Uncle Tom's personal assistant, who just happens to be an A List Actor in Hollywood. John is the stepson of Shayla's Uncle Tom, and the son of his new wife Tess from No More Wasted Time. He works at his late fathers construction business in Las Vegas. Their attraction to each other is instant and even though they have a couple of obstacles in the way they are an adorable couple.
There are some beautiful lines written in this book. My favourite would have to be: "I think people come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime."
If you love a good romance story with a lot of emotion the you NEED to read this series, it's fantastic. Enjoy!
Let me start by saying that I read Beverly's previous book, 'No More Wasted Time,' and loved it. I was excited when I got the opportunity to read this book and learn more about some of her characters. This story focuses on Shayla, who is a younger woman who had a rough childhood which her Uncle Tommy basically rescued her from. She fills her days acting as her uncles assistant.....did I mention her uncle happens to be a famous movie star and infamous for his womanizing? If Hollywood didn't happen to keep her busy enough, she is also in a long term relationship with Mat, who is not the best guy in my opinion and always puts his family's political career over Shayla.
The story does a complete turn around when her uncle calls her and says he needs her to come to Greece because he is getting married. This is where the book gets interesting because, "Sometimes at the precise moment, Fate intercedes."
Shayla meets John, the son of the woman her uncle is marrying, and immediately is drawn to him as much as she tries to stay away. As they open up and get to know one another, Shayla learns that family and true love aren't just in fairytales and she can have her own happily ever after....if she can just accept it, that is.
I can't wait to see what Beverly Preston has in store for us all next. This was a great read, and anyone who needs their faith restored in that temptress we call Fate should definitely read this book.
Beverly Has done it again with her book "Shayla's Stories." I am blown away and left wanting more. This book can be a stand alone or it can go right along with "No More Wasted Time." "Shayla's Stories" is about the very sexy and very famous Tom Clemmins' niece Shayla. For those of you who have read NMWT you would know what I am talking about. Shayla works as Tom Clemmin's assistant. She is very busy in her work and struggling with a relationship on the rocks. When Shayla is told she is needed in Greece for assisting her uncle, that gives her the chance to find clarity and find what she wants to do about her relationship woes. Shayla is not happy, however that she has to travel with Tess' kids. Tess is Tom's girlfriend and Tess' kids were not a big fan of Tom to begin with and that bothered Shayla. Little did Shayla know, that she would feel right at home with Tess' close knit family. Shayla ends up getting more than she bargained for when she is in Greece and that leaves her more confused than ever. Shayla returns home to finally make her decision and take the bull by the horns and comes head to head with a huge shock. You will have to read it to find out what that shock and what exactly she finds in Greece. Teehee! Way to go Beverly Preston. Once again you have left me very satisfied and panting for more heat and romance in your books. I don't have anything bad to say about this book. So there you have it, another awesome book that I would recommend to everyone.
Sheer HEAVEN...a wonderfully sexy and romantic book that really warmed me up (heart and body) for a cold afternoon read =) I received this book as a gift and read it blind...no previous knowledge of either the author or the book and wow...what a pleasant surprise. My taste in books tends to run more on the dark side (hard rockers, badass bikers, erotica) so I wasn't sure how much I would get into this one, as I find most romance novels a bit on the dull side and too PG rated for me...but HOLY HELL...not this one! I was hooked from the first few pages and once I got past the very unlikeable spoiled rich snobs (Mat and his mother) and we take off with Shayla to Greece for her uncle's wedding...it became pure sexy, lustful magic! John is my new book boyfriend right now...LOL...and when he and Shayla connect, it is nothing short of major fireworks! There are some parts of the book that are a bit predictable (you can figure out who some of the villains are) and a turn of events in the last chapter I sort of saw coming...but there was a kind of cool twist involving Mat that made me not hate him so much at the end and the majority of characters are so likeable, that this was a real "feel good" book. Highly recommend this one to all my romance book loving friends...but fair warning...the bedroom scenes are super hot and definitely NOT PG rated...ENJOY =)
I picked up 'No More Wasted Time' by Beverly Preston one day and I can honestly say it was one of the best stories I've read (and I read a lot!). It's just one of those that sticks with you. It resonated with me. the characters felt like they could be real. I have recommended it to all my girlfriends. So, I couldn't have been more excited to learn that this book, 'Shayla's Story', is a story about Tom's niece from the first book.
Shayla is her famous uncle's assistant and has been doubting her relationship with her current boyfriend. She travels to Greece for her uncle's wedding without him and meets John, Tess' son. Sparks fly when these two get together, but things are never simple. This was a great story, with twists and turns I didn't always see coming. It takes you on a journey, one that I was happy to get lost in. You also get to visit with many of the secondary characters from the first book and learn more about all of their lives. The ending of this book left me with a huge smile on my face. There's no need to wait, just jump right in, start with 'No More Wasted Time' and then 'Shayla's Story'. True romantics won't be disappointed!
I was even more excited to learn that Tracy and JC (John's sisters) are each getting their own books, too. I will be first in line to get them when they become available. If you like contemporary romance, you will absolutely love these stories written by Beverly Preston.
I love when I just happen to come across books that totally engross me. This is what happened when I came across No More Time Wasted, the first book in the Clemmins/Matthews series. I was so ecstatic when I finished No More and saw that Shayla had her own story. I started right in on her book. I absolutely loved it and I love, love, love how John was involved. It was funny because while I was reading Shayla’s story and everything that her and John were doing I kept asking myself if I remember reading anything that would hint at the two of them while I was reading No More. But I couldn’t find a single thing. I think John is such a hottie and I loved how he has learned so much about life and love from his father. The love he shared with Shayla gave me a hint of the wonderful life Tess, and Richard shared. It allowed me to even fall in love with Richard’s character, someone never really focused on but it didn't matter because John gave such a great example as to how Richard might have been. The passion and love making differed from each book in a totally great way as well. Tess and Tom are mature adults; their passion wasn’t raw but deep and respectful. The love between Shayla and John was heated, just perfect for young love. Great book, great series and I cannot wait to read more and get to know these characters along the way!!
I have to start this review with "This book was freaking spectacular! That said, After reading No More Wasted Time, book 1 I was really anticipating the 2nd installment. Shayla's Story was beautifully written. Beverly out does herself again in this story with the introduction of this not so known, Clemmins family/Assistant. Shayla is sexy, confident and beautiful in this truly romantic sequel. Between the humor and sexy/smoking hot scenes, honestly If I didn't have a job I would've finished it in a day...LOL. Since I myself, love to travel, I enjoyed how Beverly takes us to more beautifully romantic places. Ms. Preston introduces us to Tess's son John and fills in the gaps of what really happened over the holidays in the previous installment *smiles*. I know that even if you haven't read No more Wasted Time, that you won't regret a minute of Shayla's Story, its hot, romantic literature in the No More wasted time series does not disappoint. I'm counting the days until the next installment comes out. But until then I'll be able to re-read the stories of how the Mathhews/Clemmins families unfold and fall in love with Tess, Tommy, John and Shayla all over again. I'm proud to say that John Mathhews is my very smoking hot, first book boyfriend and I can't wait to see what's in store for this family next!
You did a great job with Shayla's story, I loved her interaction with her friend Carrie Ann, they gelled together so great. Wished we had seen a bit more of them as her relationship progressed.
So nice to catch up with Tess and Tom, I really loved their book, No More Wasted Time.
Mat really needed a slap up the head, and it all made sense later on, but he really needed to grow a pair. He so needed to stand up to his mother. I was not expecting the twist about him meeting someone, but was so pleased that Shayla was free to start something with John. Oh my what a hunk, the fact he was younger shocked as he came over so more mature. The spark was immediate, although Shayla had made her mind up to not like him, after beating up Tom. The wedding came over in a perfect setting, without all pomp and ceremony, and a media circus.
You really felt the connection between Shayla and John, they just oozed romance. The sex was smoking they just fitted!
Shayla had a hard child life, not gathering many good memories, but her life changed when she went to live with Tom, her uncle. I thought the Christmas setting at the cabin was really lovely, even the proposal was beautiful, then the awful twist! my heart was in my mouth.
The epilogue was fab, really glad how things ended, can't wait for the next installment.
AWE!!! So are you looking for an amazing story, one that sticks to your heart and excites you too? Well, look no further this is it!!! I loved No More Wasted Time, but this book is equally as intriguing. I read countless books, so I'm amazed when a story comes across as fresh, exciting and charms me. I lived in this story!! I devoured this book, Shayla is such a vivid character even with her broken past she comes across as naive. I felt little cracks in Shayla, the wall she had built to protect herself had started to fracture. Realizing her life was not leading to the right destination. Maybe a good safe life wasn't all she needed or wanted!! She really feels a pull towards John, One she would like to ignore. But John is just want she needs and his push makes her brave!! Able to reach for things she wants, feels and needs, happiness burst from within her. John will charm you and warm your heart. This story is more then a book it lives and breathes. You will feel it in your heart and soul!! A must read!!
