David Undone: Mending a Broken Heart

Rate this book
After having his heart broken by his boyfriend, David buys a plane ticket and runs away from New York to the farthest place possible. He finds himself on the other side of the Atlantic, in a small country that’s as beautiful as it is frozen in time.
David’s successful career as a writer has stalled. His muse seems to have abandoned him; all he can think of is Steven’s harsh words about him and his neediness. So he retreats to a house in the middle of a beautiful mountain range, perched on a bay of crystalline, blue-green waters — the same one where he and Steven had planned to go and spend a romantic getaway together. Maybe Steven is right. Maybe David is pitiful and can’t do anything right.
Still jet lagged and questioning himself, David meets Manuel, a Portuguese hunk whose body looks like Michelangelo himself chiseled it. He’s handsome, easygoing, and exudes an aura of self-confidence that makes David want to know more about him. Manuel is everything David is not, and he finds himself drawn to him, his charisma pulling him ever closer.
But is Manuel enough to make him forget about his heartbreak and insecurities? Can David let go of his past?

About the author

James Lee Hard

12 books101 followers
James spends most of his time looking at his computer screen, trying to summon the magical words that make the ingredients for a great story. He dreams about being able to move people and becoming a great writer one day.

He writes contemporary gay romance and erotica but he wants to write about much more. His mind is filled with sci-fi gadgets, swords, wizards and dragons and he has trouble trying to choose one theme. Maybe one day we’ll read something starring sinewy heroes battling giant dragons in tight pants. But the romance will always be there. And the abs. And the happy endings – James is a sucker for them.

James draws inspiration from everyday life, books, movies, songs, pictures and much more. Almost everything can ignite his desire to write but not all will end up on his stories.
James is an indie author who relies on friends and a growing base of lovely beta readers to help him with his stories, ensuring that each book is better than the previous one.

A new story from James Lee Hard, you know I'll be up front of the queue for that every single time.
A novelette this time and whilst the theme firmly remains in the second chances category it still has an individual spin on the tale, that only James seems to be able to master with his inimitable skill and craftsmanship.
So meet David...going off alone on his travels after it seems a particularly difficult and messy breakup. Landing in a very beautiful Portugal alone when he should be part of a couple, we find this the start of David's very own journey of self discovery.
After settling in he meets Manuel (sigh), an innocent meeting that sees Manuel dropping off some supplies to David and here begins a tentative friendship of sorts. Manuel struggling with his English and David offering to tutor him we find the boundaries of help, friendship and more being crossed confusing David and blurring lines.
The characters that James brings us with each separate book all have very individual qualities....here David, perhaps a little selfish, has things to learn about love and happiness and Manuel a big bear of a man with a huge heart definitely has things to teach him. It is here where we see a shift and I particularly enjoyed seeing the growth in Davids character and was willing him to find that happiness that you know is there somewhere.
A small novel with a huge heart and the skill in this is making it feel like a much bigger novel and it really did feel like that to me....it was descriptive and very endearing , the way the country was portrayed and described I felt as though I was actually there...I could see the scenery....feel the beauty and smell the fresh air....it took me on a journey of sorts....and simply put this book was just....more in every way!
James writing is exquisite and I crave for more, it's writing at it's finest and let me just point out that this is some of the best characterisation I have encountered, and the delivery of a character with language barriers is difficult but here is done with ease.
So don't be put off by the word count...take a chance on this story...live the life in Portugal just for a short time and learn the lesson that James' wants us to....
So thank you James...I am humbled each time I read your words and in this book I found all that i needed and in Manuel there is no doubt I have found my new book boyfriend, he was just the most amazing character, I think of him and smile gently.
You can't get better than that <3

It's such a shame that this author no longer writes as I enjoy his work.

I've never read a book by this author nor do I read much M/M books; however, this one's synopsis pulled me in. David is dumped by his now ex boyfriend who's parting remark, " you're pitiful" just can't get out of his head! He's also a writer with severe writer's block, so what does he do....takes a long trip to Portugal to get his life back together. The only problem is love finds you when you are least looking for it. My only negative comment is I wish it had been just a tad bit longer to see where things went with Manuel after David finally found himself.

What a wonderful, short, but sweet, story of learning how to love again.
I thought this was a really great read, it was really well written and my heart broke for David and the mixture of emotions he goes through. Manuel was a really sweet character, and i loved reading him talking in his broken English.
Brilliant !

The pseudonym of the author led me to believe that this is an erotic short. NOT TRUE. This is a short but wonderful love story.
David is an author who is overcome with sorrow following an unexpected breakup. He vacations in Lisbon to find his muse. While there he found more. Much more. Best of all, he found himself.

Short and sweet.

This was a short and sweet story of self discovery. It resonated with the truism that you have to love yourself first before you can truly love someone else.
A lesson we can all learn from.

3/3.5 stars.

It was a sweet quick read but I felt something was missing. Maybe it was because it's a novella. I don't know.

Sweet little story. I enjoyed this book but just wish it was a bit longer because the end felt a little rushed and I would like to have found out what happened next.
