Then a near-death experience briefly forces Eddie to the other side. He sees something demonic, something destitute and evil, and he is grateful for waking up again.
But he hasn’t woken up alone.
Everywhere he goes this entity is there, haunting him. It is making him weaker, and it won’t be long before it takes his place in this world.
Can he escape this demon that has attached itself to his soul? Or will he lose his life before he can become something greater?

Goodreads Rating:4.08/ My Rating 4.00
Review: This is the second self-published book I have read since starting my blog two months ago and let me say, this was a great book. Complete with Hell's creatures, a right amount of nightmarish and sinister activity that made me, not scared, but fearful for the protagonist.
Eddie King is a regular guy on the outside. However, he had had a near-death experience when he and his younger sister were hit by a car one summer afternoon in their neighborhood as they played chase. She died and he was left in a brain-dead coma. In what felt like minutes, he was in Hell, being stalked by a horrible woman who (let's be honest I recognized her description) and a general of Hell named Balam. Threatened mortally by Balam, he finds himself suddenly awake in a hospital bed finding out that three weeks have passed since the accident and his sister has died. Worse yet, Blama has trapped his sister's soul in his claws.
When he became an adult, he was dragged to the pits by depression and anxiety. Living on the sofa bed of a friend having no job, no money and no prospect for the future he ends up "dying" again. (I won't tell you how you have to find out). In another coma, he finally gets attacked by the horrible woman. Balam is there and threatens him again. For the remainder of the book, Eddie is dogged by an entity which is this woman who is a reminder of the ghost from the movie The Ring. He slowly but surely gets sicker, weaker, INFECTED. Landing in the hospital, he gets terrible news about his "condition," and he knows that the horrible woman is responsible.
Waiting to die is all he can do. He feels her presence and knows there is nothing he can do about it. So he expects. What will happen to make him better? Will he ever get rid of the entity haunting him?
The story starts with him attending a girl's possession and possible exorcism. At first, I thought, "Oh great, a retelling of Constantine, a movie that I love". However, it is not. Eddie is different from Constantine. He is stronger in a lot of ways that become evident towards the end of the book and is readily explained by a paranormal expert in the 70% portion of the book. Also, he does not do things the same way Constantine does. Eddie can defeat entities and demons more easily than Constantine, and it is explained why.
I only have one problem with the book, and it is not the writing or technical items. It seemed too easy. Although the buildup and story were quite good, once I got to the end piece, and the book was wrapping up the exorcism of the girl from the beginning, it was rushed and almost too easy. I was a little disappointed and at the same time happy that it happened the way it did.
Writing: The writing is surprisingly very very good. Being that this is a self-published title, I expected there to be a lot of technical problems with spelling, grammar, and typos. There were none. I was delighted and also surprised. It seems Mr. Wood has started his own Publishing company to release the books he wrote. There may or may not have been an editor, but there were no problems with the pacing or text at all. I was delighted with the writing in general.
Plot: The plot piece was evident from the beginning. There were two scenarios in this 182-page story which were both handled quite well and tied in nicely at the end. The first plot was Eddie as an exorcist. The second plot was Eddie learning of the entity and getting rid of it once and for all. The final main plot I will leave up to you to discover as it is critical to both storylines. Written in alternating timelines, the seamless quality of the story moved along giving me the sense that Eddie was something other than a regular man. As I read on, I found out that he was a man of extraordinary gifts and power.
The book contains little violence, but a lot of intrigue and demonic things.
What I Liked: I loved the exorcist part of Eddie. The whole experience non-plussed him by being in the presence of evil and did not falter. I was also intrigued by the entity that was haunting him and making him sick. This was a new storyline that I have not read before in other exorcism and paranormal books.
What I Didn't Like: I didn't like the rushing of the exorcism towards the end. It seemed like the author got tired of writing about it. I was a little disappointed by that. I would have liked a bit more detail and a little more about the experience than what was there.
Overall Impression: The book was excellent, primarily since it was self-published. I was delighted and I can honestly see this author go on to be picked up by a traditional publisher if he chooses to go the route. However, this author has many books, and it looks like he is quite happy self-publishing, so who knows. I am anxious to read the second book in the series and have it on my Kindle already!
I will say this. If you are looking for a horror to scare you, this would be it. The entity alone is scary. It isn't a ten scare, but it's frightening nonetheless. It's well written and very intriguing.
Story 4.5/5 Narration 4.5/5 I Have The Sight by Rick Wood, is a good demonic possession story. The back and forth between the present and the past, isn’t something I appreciate, but in this story it wasn’t tiresome for me. I’ll read the second book in the series. I can’t wait to know more about Eddie’s battles against this demonic entity. I recommend it!
I luuuurrve my demonic possession books and movies!! And this novel was right up my street and exactly what I needed.
I did get a bit confused between the past and present chapters and the two characters Eddie and Derek but that's totally my fault as I was practically speed reading in my enthusiasm to immerse myself in the story. Once I slowed myself down and reread a few chapters it all made sense.
The book starts out with the horrifying death of Eddie's young sister and the first of his comas. We follow Eddie's life from childhood, to his teen years to his despairing young adulthood where he commits suicide and has his second, longer coma. At the same time we start to follow Derek's story of a PhD student and his thesis of mental health and the link to Psychic Phenomenon. He ends up with his own University Demonology Department and starts to investigate cases. While despairing of ever finding any real cases to study he comes across Eddie and his bizarre sleepwalking episodes. Fascinating, sorrowful, anxiety driven and frightening, we are given a peek at Eddie's battle over true evil and the development of his special ability. A stunning start to a new horror/fantasy series for me, I have just joined the author's newsletter so I don't lose the rest of the series in my huge TBR pile.
As great as this story is, it's not hooking me in. I keep forgetting about it completely, and I just don't want to come back it. The description in this is good, and there were times that really dug its claws into me, but I just don't feel totally gripped in this. Whenever I read it, I can only seem to read one chapter before I abandon it again for a while. This started off really well and I was enjoying it, but it just sort of sizzles out. Maybe I'll come back to this when I don't have so much to read, but for not, I'm shelving it as DNF.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this one. It is very interesting, the author definitely has a good imagination. I don't think I will continue this series, it just didn't do much for me.
I enjoyed this book enough that I went to Amazon when I was about 25% in and bought the rest of the series while the books were on sale. I'm glad that I did. There is more to this than endless horror. A big plus is that it relies more on character and story development than shock factor and gross out blood and guts. As soon as I ended Book #1 and went on to #2 and thought #2 was even better!
Well.....the book was a fast read, and I'm glad it was. It has great potential, actually very good in some descriptions/chapters, but I felt the author was rushing through the story line too fast, and trying to be too "cutsie" in developing Eddie's character. (And, I agree with someone else's review: "My Gosh, would someone please give Eddie some love!!!".) Perhaps I'm just not of the correct age to connect with this author. Time to go read a good Stephen King book now...
Very well written story! Great characters and story line. The author has a really good start to his series here, I can't wait to read the next for books.
Eddie King has been tortured by visions ever since his sister died in a bike ride with him on the estate. Eddie himself was rendered unconscious for a period of time and was tormented by visions of haunted lady and a demon. Is the haunted lady his sister? Who is the demon? With Cassy dying Edie king’s life becomes topsy turvy. Out of the corner of his eye he sees a girl with scars and black hair just staring at him. His father develops a drinking problem and becomes abusive with his wife. His best friend Jenny comes out that she is gay. As the years roll by Eddie’s fortunes wane and he is hardly considered stable. Having taken up with Jenny and Lacy, he soon finds that he is wearing out his welcome.
A plunge of the bridge into the freezing waters below send him back to the underworld where he is tormented by the lady. It maybe his sister? He confronts the demon Balam, who has his sister prisoner. When he wakes up it is three months later and finds out that he was out for three months and he was declared brain dead. His life is starting to really fall apart. His visist to the psychic does not go a planned and she introduces him to Derek and Levi, two semi pro exorcists. Eddie has been cursed and blessed. He can go the underworld which is off limits to mortals. But he was not supposed to be there and so something had tried to take his place. Eddie can also see demons while other people cannot see them. The demon Lamashtu has a hold on Eddie and soon he will die. The big questions remains? Or should I say several questions still remain. Can the exorcist fights Lamashtu? Will Eddie free his sister from the demon’s clutches? Will Balam be defeated? Find this out and ore by reading he story. It is free off amazon and definitely worth the read. Would be nice if it was longer and had a few more details thrown in to fatten the book up a bit. Over all this guys Is a good story teller.
After two separate out of body experiences, Edward King has returned with a demonic attachment that slowly begins to overtake his body and push Edward out of this earthly plane. Luckily, Edward learns through the course of the story that he is “paranormally gifted” and contains the other worldly skills to fight back against the demons from hell with impressive results.
This book was exactly what horror fans look for. Tightly written, delivering facts without excessive exposition, while simultaneously developing the characters with pinpoint precision. This one literally felt like I was watching a movie, the story playing out visibly in my head with a vibrancy and vividness that is hard to come by in most writing styles.
Multiple timelines were weaved together seamlessly, keeping the reader on their toes and demanding their attention. The chapters never over stayed their welcome, got to the point, and delivered everything in such a tightly wound package that this quickly became one of those books that you truly have a hard time putting down.
I literally can’t wait to continue this series and have already ordered book two. Edward King is a demonic bad ass, Rick Wood’s writing style is wonderful, and I’m officially hooked! Give me more!
A good and easy read. But nothing I read before, some of it is like in the Exorcist, but a completely different story. Eddie has a paranormal gift to defeat evil, this s is the story where and how it all began. It is interesting,as well the characters are good. Very detailed and good development within the main character Eddie. But I am not sure if I get the second part, because I read something like it already, so nothing new to me. But still a good storyline, for any fan of paranormal and possessions.
I am a big Rick Wood fan and have read the first two books in the Sensitives series. This book is actually before the Sensitives series and wanted to check it out. I loved it. The pace is so fast and you learn the beginning of the Edward King saga. He is hired to do an exorcism on a girl. But at the same time, you learn his back history on how he became what he is. The plot is fantastic, and like I said the pace is lightening fast. Highly recommend the series. I'm about to start book 2 now and cannot wait to see what happens!!!!
I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but Rick Wood pulled me straight into Eddie’s chaotic life and the terrifying world he’s forced to face. I really connected with Eddie he’s flawed, lazy, and kind of a mess, but that makes his journey all the more gripping. The demon haunting him is genuinely creepy, and the tension builds perfectly throughout the story. It’s dark, suspenseful, and had me turning pages late into the night. Can’t wait to see where the rest of the Edward King series goes!
A hidden gem in the free section of the kindle store! A story of a life-long battle with a demon that has taken possession over the soul of the protagonist's dead sister and coming to terms with having what is called "The Sight". Basically a natural when it comes to exorcisms and the ability to see other entities.
Just finished the first Edward King book. I will be reading the rest of them. Rick Wood writes the way I enjoy reading my books. Clean, clear and exciting. He has a way of making you feel like you know what's coming next . But surprise, you don't. Mr Wood, I'm glad we found each other. Keep them coming.
This was a short, quick read. It did keep my attention very well but the grammatical/spelling errors absolutely drove me crazy. If I had to read ‘leant’ one more time, I think I might’ve died! It also kind of bugged me that it reminded me so much of ‘The Exorcist’ in a way.
I enjoyed this quick little read and it made for a good weekend read but definitely wasn’t my cup of tea.
This was okay and would have been better if it followed a more direct path instead of going back and forth between the present and the past, it was hard to follow and I hoped it would get better. While interesting, I don't think I will be reading the rest of this series, just not interesting enough to pursue any further.
I'm a little torn on this one. It was fun enough, but I'm not totally sold on the origin story/already established mix. It's nice to have things switched up from the standard origin story, but it removed any suspense on how successful the process would be.
At some point I think I'll have to get around to reading the next one and see how that one goes.
I just finished I have the sight Edward King series book 1. It was ok nothing super scary but not Ricks best. Will carry on with the series at least the next book to see if its just a one off. Possesion stories are kind tricky they are either really good or they miss the mark. Will read more by Rick wood.
I thoroughly enjoyed the setup of this book and the way the author utilized both Derek and Eddie's POVs. This is one of the best horror books I've read in awhile, and I'm pleased to see that Rick Wood has written an entire series from this book as well as many others. My only complaint would be that I wish the book was longer, but even that isn't enough to make me give it a lower rating.
Enjoyed this book very much. the characters were very interesting and believable, And the interactions between each other was brilliant. I can't wait to find out what happens next. Very good quick read
This is a great ( if short ) introduction to a new supernatural series of books featuring Edward King, who "has the sight". This book is both creepy and very claustrophobic, has great characters and is more importantly frightening. I have already started book 2 in the series Descendant Of Hell.
A wonderful chilling tale on how someone becomes followed by a demon after experiencing death and coming back. I loved it! The scenes of hell were very real. Found myself hoping someone could help Eddie. I cannot wait to read the next installment.
Loved this story vividly written well developed characters and a mind bending plot. Kept me reading page after page I had to find out what happens next HIGHLY recommend
Loved this book - great characters, great subject matter and great length of story too - fairly short but nice and punchy. I will be reading more by Rick Wood, that is for sure. If you like The Exorcist/Constantine, then I would say you will like this book - go for it!
It was an enjoyable read. Enough to keep you hooked from beginning to end. Had all the elements needed for a supernatural, suspenseful thriller. Just purchased the next book so I hope it is as great as the first!
Putting aside all of the misspelled words and other issues, this really was a good book. Yes, you are asked to believe in the unbelievable, but if you can get past that,I think that you'll enjoy it as much as I did.
Excellent read! This is the type of stories I enjoy reading! Exorcisms are great! As a formaer paranormal investigator, I found this book very intriguing!
