"From Amazon bestselling author Steve Gannon, thrillers that will keep you up all night . . . but lock your doors and windows first!" Terrorist attacks stagger Los Angeles. Risking everything, maverick LAPD Detective Daniel Kane returns to duty, fighting to stop the launch of our nation's darkest nightmare.
I was a Navy brat, the oldest of four kids. My dad served as a captain in the US Navy, so our family moved around a lot—North Carolina, Rhode Island, Virginia. When my dad finally took a post at the Pentagon for the remainder of his career, we landed for good in Falls Church, Virginia.
After a high-school education under the not-so-gentle tutelage of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, I embarked for college one step ahead of a serious run-in with the Falls Church police—eventually completing my undergraduate education at Duke University and USC with a degree in physics. Following a stint as a systems engineer in the Southern California aerospace industry, I headed back to UCLA for graduate work, earning a DDS degree four years later. I passed the California Dental Board exam that summer and prepared to begin a new career.
At that point I think I had my first identity crisis. I liked school. Beat work. Plus it allowed me to put off deciding what I wanted to do with my life when I grew up. I had never really thought about the future much. I had just gone from day to day, surmounting one hurdle at a time. Now that I was finished with school, was this going to be it? Work?
Not that I don’t like work. I held down part-time jobs during most of my college years— retail sales in a bookstore, swing shift on a loading dock, nights as a bartender. Like that.
In retrospect, I think those jobs were as influential as my formal education in shaping who I am. I recall little of my advanced math courses (and by little I mean zero), and I haven’t practiced dentistry in years, but I do remember things I picked up working various jobs, things I have been able to use in my writing.
Anyway, I opened a dental office on the Westside of town and began my life as an adult. But not without a struggle. During the years I practiced dentistry in Brentwood (right down the street from where O.J. Simpson didn’t kill Nicole), I got my Screen Actors Guild card and “acted” in TV commercials, shamelessly promoting everything from luggage to beer. I also modeled in a worldwide print campaign for Camel cigarettes before “Joe Camel,” the famous R.J. Reynolds cartoon that more effectively targeted kids, took over the cigarette advertising reins. That job was fun. Except for the smoking.
And I wrote fiction. Lots of fiction. All kinds of fiction. Mostly short stories, but some longer pieces, too. Some even got published.
Upon retiring from dentistry in my mid-thirties, I spent a decade as a real-estate developer specializing in beachfront construction in Malibu. Homes for the stars. More recently I’ve served as executive director for an Idaho nonprofit that promotes classical music concerts and presents various educational programs. And I continue to write.
Okay, seems like a lot of careers for one guy, right? I agree. Bottom line, I guess I was always ready to take a chance on something new, which led me down a lot of unexpected paths. But one constant remained throughout, something that gave me a way to use all my experiences, both good and bad. Writing.
And in the end, that’s what I finally decided I wanted to do, even if I were to ever grow up . . . someday. I think it’s what I do best.
My first full novel, titled A Song for the Asking, was published to both critical and reader acclaim by Bantam Books. The book was inspired by the question: “Can a homicide detective who deals with the worst of human nature go home to a normal family life?” In doing the research for my fictional lead character, LAPD Detective Daniel Kane, I met some fascinating people, learned some unexpected things, and made some lifelong friends.
IMG_0206Since then I have continued the “Kane Novel” series, following with bestsellers Kane, a thriller, and Allison, a suspense tale told from the perspective of Kane’s only daughter, Allison. A fourth in the series, titled L.A. Sniper, is scheduled for release in 2014. Glow, a standalone novel that chronicles the e
Steve Gannon s one of my favorite author, read all the books in this series. This one was about terrorism in LA, media sensationalism spread it around the US and Europe too. Kane family is dealing with the loss of wife and mother. Again Kane family stands together, wedding, mental illness also being targeted by the terrorist. Kane is grizzly bear outside, teddy bear inside. Recommend this book to everybody.
I started reading author Gannon's books in 1997, when the first book in this awesome series came out - A SONG FOR THE ASKING. I discovered it at my local library, if my memory serves me correctly. Yea for the library system. I loved (and still love) that book and have read it many times, which is unusual for me.
Gannon is a talented writer who draws his readers into his stories, letting them experience the joy, angst, and pain of his characters. His dialogue and character development is some of the best I've ever read (as I've noted in previous reviews).
INFIDEL is the fifth book in the Kane family series. Book four - L.A. SNIPER - just about did me in. I won't tell you why because if you haven't read this series, you definitely should before reading this book. Do you have to read the other books to enjoy this book? No, but it will be a much richer reading experience for you if you do.
Again, in this offering, I loved the characters of the Kane family. They feel so true-to-life and multi-faceted. Dan Kane, the patriarch of this clan, is a rough and tumble guy and sometimes you love him and sometimes you just want to slap him. He's working as a liaison between the FBI and the LAPD as they track some really despicable killers. Kane keeps slogging along in spite of office politics getting in the way repeatedly.
Do yourself a big favor and read this book (and hopefully the series). A SONG FOR THE ASKING is probably in my top twenty books ever.
I received this book from the author in exchange for my unbiased review - and I'm so glad I did.
I also bought the softcover edition of this book - to support one of my favorite authors.
Det Kane and his family are trying to recover from the murder of his wife. He is called back to work to be the liaison between the LAPD and the FBI on a case with terrorism being the only thing they can draw from the whole case. The story takes us through finding the who, why and how. The story gives us a look at the feelings as well as the drive the detective has plus the way he can depend on those who really stand behind him where ever his lead takes them. My first read by this author.
Same story, different characters. Too much family drama, as one person commented "soap opera", Mr Gannon has the narrative skills but may lack imagination for an interesting plot. I hope I'm misjudging as I appreciate authors like Clancy, Flynn, Thor etc and their ability to submerge me into their plot. Hopefully Mr Gannon can join their ranks.
Steve Gannon’s books just keep getting better and better!!
Have already downloaded book #6 in the Kane series. With the thrilling edge-of-your-seat excitement and excellent story line these books will blow you away. I absolutely love the family portion of the Kane clan! Thank you, Steve, for your superb writing.
What a wonderful and amazing book by Steve Gannon. My first reading from this Author but will certainly not be the last. Something for everyone, murder, suspense, love , danger and family. , and revelation, you will not want to put this book down it is that good. Thank. You and looking forward to reading all your books.
I have lost count of the books I have read so far by this author. They are all amazing. They keep you wondering what is going to happen next. I look forward to the next one very much. I will be suggesting this author to friends and family.
Another 5 star rating for this book in the Kane Series by Steve Gannon. An incredible, thrilling, suspenseful series, with a side of family drama thrown in.
I have enjoyed all of Steve Gannon's books. I especially like the Kane series. Mr. Gannon writes well, a pleasure to read books with excellent grammar and sentence structure that flows. It makes immersing in the story much easier because poor grammar is distracting.
The mixture of the Kane family's life, problems and situations with the murder mystery/police thriller is an interesting balance. Mr Gannon never fails to provide excitement. One reading his novels feels a part of the story. Thank you, Steve Gannon for turning out such good novels. Keep up the good work.
Great mystery novel and Kane family story. Steve Gannon did it again. If you liked any of the first four Kane novels, you're going to love this one. I know I will be reading it again and again.
