Vizmas Belševicas (1931–2005) “Bille un karš” ir romānu triloģijas “Bille” otrā daļa. Kopš pirmizdevuma 1996. gadā grāmata nāk klajā ceturto reizi autores 85. jubilejas gadā.
Triloģija “Bille” iekļauta Latvijas Kultūras kanonā un LTV raidījuma “Lielā lasīšana” veidotajā latviešu iemīļotāko grāmatu sarakstā, tulkota zviedru un krievu valodā.

Receiving the Nobel prize was her childhood dream; she, as a poor but bright girl, spent much of her time reading classical literature. Belševica's work has been recognised: on December 6, 1990, she was elected honorary member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences; she has twice received the Spidola Award, which is the highest recognition in Latvian literature. Belševica has also received the highest award of the Latvian State, namely the Three Star Order.
Vizma Belševica published her first poems in 1947; her first book of poetry appeared in 1955. Her most notable poetry collections are Jūra deg (The Sea is Burning, 1966), Gadu gredzeni (Annual Rings, 1969), Madarās (In My Lady's Bedstraw, 1976), Kamola tinēja (The Clew Winder, 1981), Dzeltu laiks (Autumn Time, 1987). Her short stories' collections are Ķikuraga stāsti (Stories from Kikurags, 1965), Nelaime mājās (Misfortune at Home, 1979), Lauztā sirds uz goda dēļa (Broken Heart on the Board of Honour, 1997). During the post-Soviet period, Belševica wrote three semi-autobiographical books – stories about the girl Bille, following her life from the late 1930s, throughout the first year of Soviet occupation of Latvia (1940–41), the Nazi occupation (1941–45), and the first post-war years under Stalin's regime: Bille (Bille, 1992, 95), Bille un karš (initial title: Bille dzīvo tālāk) (Bille and War, 1996), Billes skaistā jaunība (The Wonderful Youth of Bille, 1999). Its first edition was published by the Latvian publisher Mežābele in 1992 in the United States and only in 1995 in Latvia. Now this trilogy has been recognized as one of the most important works of Latvian literature of all times. It has been translated into Swedish, but not in English.
Belševica's poetry and fiction has been translated in about 40 languages. Within the Soviet Union of the 1960s–1980s, several books of her selected poetry were published in Russian, Belarusian and Armenian. Her poems were translated into English by Inara Cedrins for the anthology Contemporary Latvian Poetry published by the University of Iowa Press in 1983. From the 1980s onwards, Belševica has been regularly present on the Swedish literary scene, (translator Juris Kronbergs), books of her poetry and Bille stories have enjoyed immense critical success and wide readership there. Her Selected Poems have been published also in Norway, Denmark and Iceland. Selected Short Stories – in Russia, Georgia and Germany. The Russian translation of the Bille trilogy has been published in Riga, Latvia.
In her work she criticized the situation of oppressed nations in Soviet Union, therefore from 1971 to 1974 she was not allowed to publish. Her name could not be mentioned in media. KGB agents searched her apartment twice confiscating manuscripts and notes.

ar pārpasaulīgu gaišumu un bērnišķīgu naivumu par lielām traģēdijām un sāpēm. grāmata, kas savu aktualitāti un literāro vērtību nezaudēs nekad!

Karš pārvērš visu - cilvēkus, domas, vērtības.
Būt bērnam kara laikā...nesaprotami, pavisam savādi.
Bille nesaprot – vai tad Latvijas vairs nav, ka ienākuši krievi? Kā lai saprot, ja nezina, ja bērniem neko nesaka? Bērniem nekad neko nesaka un tad paši sauc bērnus par muļķiem un apsmej.
Bille dzīvo līdzi un cenšas izbaudīt bērnību. Lēvurs, kraupis... nu jau mazāk, Bille taču liela!
Savāda grāmata, savādi notikumi. Cilvēki apkārt kā nozombēti...
"Lielie, kas agrāk likušies tik gudri un vareni, Billei arvien biežāk škiet galīgi stulbi."
"Bille un karš" būtiski rada pārdomas par eksistenciālismu, uzdod jautājumus : kādi mēs esam? kā mēs izturamies pret tuviniekiem? kā mēs pavadam bērnību? kādi esam - pieaugušie? kāda jēga ir vispār kaut kam?
"Visiem vāciešiem tāpat jāmirst viena nolādēta kretīna dēļ, un labāk jau ātrāk un savā nāvē."
Šī grāmata man patika labāk par otro daļu, jo Bille vairs nav naivs bērns. Ja bērnam vēl jāredz to, kas ir aiz Mudītes biezajiem aizkariem...
Diez, kur palikusi Billes ome?
Bille otrajā daļā viņu vairs nepiemin...

Billes bērnība strauji apraujas, kad viņas dzīvē parādās karš, bet līdz ar karu - dažādas domas un pārdzīvojumi, kas lauž sirdi līdz tādai stadijai, ka raudāt gribas, bet tai pašā laikā liek priecāties, ka pašai tam visam nebija jāiet cauri. Jo būtībā viss grāmatā atainotais, vismaz tas, kas saistīts ar karu, ir šausmīgs, lai gan it kā redzēts bērna acīm. Varbūt tieši šī iemesla dēļ vēl jo šausmīgāks - lietas, ko Bille palaiž garām vai līdz galam īsti neizprot, lasītājam ir skaudri saprotamas. Un šajā grāmatā Bille ir vēl jo vientuļāka, bet tās vairs nav bērnības muļķīgās iedomas par vientulību, bet gan reāla un skumja patiesība par karu.

Ja varētu liktu vēl vairāk zvaigznes. Loti patika valoda un tas kā attēloti notikumi un kara laiks bērna acīm. Laikam jau mani savilño un aizrauj stāsti par Otro pasaules karu.

Bille ar bērna acīm redz skaidri visu to, ko pieaugušiem kauns atzīt - gan citiem, gan pašiem sev. Paskatoties uz kara laiku caur bērna naivumu un skaidrību, redzam, cik skaudrs un nežēlīgs tas bija. Taču tā ir mūsu vēsture, kas mūs veidojusi par tādiem, kādi esam.

Diezgan drūma, ja likās, ka drūmāk par pirmo daļu vairs nevar būt, tad izrādās var. Šobrīd jau lasot 3.daļu, pārņem tāda bezcerība, nabaga Bille, cik tas ir netaisnīgi piedzimt tādos laikos tādā ģimenē...

Absolutely love Belševica's books! This is the second book out of a 3-book series. I have read them in Latvian as a kid, and wanted to experience it in Finnish as well.
The book talks about a young girl's experiences in the world during 1940's. The book so lovely captures how a young kid sees the world and tries to make sense of it, and how grown-ups around her deal with life. She makes conclusions based on the information she's given.
I have laughed out loud when reading this book. The expressions are amazing in Latvian, and the Finnish translation is great. It beautifully captures Belševica's way of expressing things.

Karš bērna acīm, iespējams, ir labākais veids, kā to izstāstīt. Bērna naivums un tiešums vienā veselumā, bērns, kas pasaka "karalis ir kails", bērns kas saglabā ticību un jēgu it visā, jo bērna sirds māk redzēt un just uzreiz un pa īstam.

Bille felt like a friend to me—at least, that’s how I saw her when I first read the book years ago, back when I was around her age. Now, reading it again as an adult, I’m suprised by how much I missed the first time. How did I forget just how grim and unsettling this story is?
This book also breaks the myth that people didn’t know about the mass murder of Jews or the concentration camps. And it challenges the idea that only Germans were responsible, when in reality, a lot of the killings were carried out by Latvians. Bille never fully knew how much her father was involved—though the book doesn’t say it outright, Belševica’s father was part of the Arājs Kommando, a Latvian paramilitary unit that helped the Nazis execute Jews. When Belševica's family found out later, they erased his name from his headstone inscription.
It’s a harrowing time for Bille—for everyone. A brutal, bloody era—first under German occupation, then Russian, a rule that only ended in 1991.
Bille is still one of the best books I’ve ever read. It’s honestly a shame this trilogy hasn’t been translated into English. Makes me wonder how many incredible books are out there, completely unknown, just because they were never translated.

Grāmata, kura noteikti ir jāizlasa vismaz vienu reizi. Dažubrīd bija sajūta, ka esmu Bille. Tas kā aprakstītas sajūtas.
