Jeff Lemire is a New York Times bestselling and award winning author, and creator of the acclaimed graphic novels Sweet Tooth, Essex County, The Underwater Welder, Trillium, Plutona, Black Hammer, Descender, Royal City, and Gideon Falls. His upcoming projects include a host of series and original graphic novels, including the fantasy series Ascender with Dustin Nguyen.
I think Colonel Weird might be my favorite of these Black Hanmer characters thus far- he's like a blend of Dr Strange and Dr Manhattan. His powers would probably suck to have and his perspective on life honestly looks like torture or a burden. A man that littleraly knows TOO MUCH. (Like me after i read philosophy for dummies).
Tragic life as well. 😔 You just can't help but feel bad for the guy. He's crazy and for good reason- his life is one big mindfuck of time, memories and inconsistent moments.
My curiosity peeked at Barbalien's arc with the priest. The whole time I was just like: "Jeff, I know we don't know each other, but please don't hurt this poor sweet boy. Let him spend some time with his crush for fucks sake. I know stories need conflict to be interesting, but just let him have this. God!"
And to my surprise it wasn't a complete disaster. 😑😐😌 Thank you Jeff for giving one of your characters a briefly happy moment.
I honestly think I'm gonna keep reading just to see if Barbalien gets it on with the priest. (Not a sentence i thought i would write today. But neither was most of this planned either).
Black Hammer is a step above most comic narratives and it's kinda crazy how Lemire is always able to consistently prove himself a quality choice for me when picking stories.
Cause anytime I get tired of a comic series, Lemire is usually my next choice- cause he's never written a bad anything. They are always crammed with solid and clever ideas, emotionally mature, beautiful to look at and paced so well you never get tired or groan.
Dude deserves more credit than he gets and he's already got a lotta cred.
I picked this issue up in a used book store and it is strange. I like the art and I liked what I read. However, this issue is in the middle of the storyline and you definitely need to start from the beginning to understand what is going on.
