Georgette Kaplan was born in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, to Eileen, a dancer, and Barry, a street merchant and lounge singer. She was a Diver on the British National Diving Team and finished twelfth in the World Championships in 1992. She has also been a fashion model, black market salesman and finally of course, actor. She received the audition for her debut role as Bacon in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) through French Connection, for whom she was modeling. They became a major investor in the film and introduced her to Guy Ritchie, who invited her to audition for a part in the film by challenging her to impersonate an illegal street vendor and convince him to purchase fake jewelry.

Wait a minute, that's Jason Statham. Shit! Is there any more room?

Okay, I'm a writer, I've published a few books, I'm looking for an artist to go halfsies with me on a webcomic and an agent because, let's be honest, that paragraph up there is my idea of marketing myself, so I may need some help with that. Otherwise, what do you need to know about me? It's not like I'm running for President.

Hold the phone! How had I not read this sooner?! Instead of getting eight hours of sleep like an adult last night, I tucked into bed and devoured this book. So, my judgement may have been slightly affected by sleep deprivation. Which is cool by me!

Georgette Kaplan is freaking FUNNY! Her references are plentiful and give me the impression of someone I'd easily get along with. I mean, she mentioned furries. That never happens.

The voice, tone, dirty inserts are all done wonderfully. And JANET LACE. I get shivers by that (hot!) name alone. WHAT A SEXY CHARACTER. Ice queens are by far the hottest, I swear. Wendy's pretty wonderful herself, too. Awkward girls are another favorite. Kaplan basically combined my favorite type of fictional women and I applaud her for having beautiful taste. Their age difference added extra spice to the relationship, as well as being discussed realistically.

I'm so taken by this writing style that it gets an auto-4 stars from me. Takeaways from a 5-star are the long segments on Kee Bird. That didn't hold my sleepy attention well. Also, at times, characters monologued a bit too long. Kaplan excels at witty banter, so I hope she'll break that up more in future books because I'll surely have my eye on anything she puts out.

Speaking of putting out. THIS BOOK IS CRAAAAZYYYY SEXY. The phone texting scene is the sexiest thing I've read in a long, long time. I kept rereading it, feeling immediately hot. This light BDSM-esque model is actually the ideal amount for me. Janet and Wendy discussing kink is as sexy as hardcore scenes I've read in the past (not that I don't appreciate things outside the box for me!). Now that I think of it, I wish this story had more sex? There were quite a few scenes bouncing back and forth to Regan's house and hangouts with Liz when I rushed to get back to Wendy and Janet together.

This was a pleasant surprise of a book. I shall dream of Janet Lace.

EDIT: I revisited this fic because I can't ever take it off my mind. It's imprinted on me and for that, I should bump it to 5 stars. Crazy how some books can do that.

I liked Wendy, the main character in Scissor Link. She is witty, funny, quirky and nice. She is the type of character that carries the plot. The other main character, Janet, is not her match in any respect. I am very fond of age-gap relationships in my romances, but I did not get the impression that this one will succeed. I totally believe Janet in her fear that she will not be enough for Wendy for the long haul. Scissor Link has a fine dose of humor, an interesting plot, and witty dialogue, but its romance is not convincing.

I was a fan of Kaplan's first book, Ex-Wives of Dracula. I was eager to see if she could write romance as well as she writes paranormal. I'm happy to say yes, Kaplan can write and I think we are witnessing the begining of a long career for her.

This story is about Wendy, an intern at an aerospace engineering company, she is unhappy with her position and unlucky in love. When she see a beautiful woman and quickly forms a crush, she is surprised to find out it's her boss. The more they work together, the closer they get. Is there a real chance at a relationship or is the boss/employee aspect, bound to fail?

One part I really enjoyed from Ex-Wives was the dialogue and how strong the characters were written. I'm happy Kaplan was able to repeat that with this book. If anything the dialog in this book was even better. In Ex-Wives, there was a lot of pop references, being a YA/NA book, I did not get all of them. This book geared to a slightly older audience, I'm happy to say I got 95% of the pop references. The dialog really was great. It was witty, sarcastic and laugh out loud funny in parts. There was more than one occasion that I wished I could of thought up one of these lines in real life, but my brain can't think of comebacks that quick.

When it comes to the relationship of the book, yes there is chemistry. This book is darn right steamy in parts. I would not say this is BDSM-ish, more like one person topping the other. It was hot, is what it is, but it wasn't over the top where someone more "sensitive" might take issue.

I really like how Kaplan writes, and after two good books, I'm sold on her as an author. I will absolutely read anything she writes in the future.

An ARC was given to me from YLVA, for a honest review.

I didn't get this one. I love age gap romances and the boss/employee trope too, but I really didn't enjoy this book.
I suppose it's well written, and I should have loved it based on the plot, but this was a complete miss for me.

3 stars. I'm confused. Should I laugh or get turned on? There's some weird tone dissonance going on. I liked the book better while it was a pure comedy but then it turned the heat up. The problem is though when it starts to get me going, a tasteless joke is thrown in. An instant turnoff. I appreciate all the geek culture references but I just dislike high school humor in sex scenes. It's not hot, it's silly at best.

I did finish the book yet it's not exactly clear to me what the book was really about. They spend most of the book lusting after each other and playing sex games yet it's not exactly pure erotica either. There is some kind of weird plot thing going on that I couldn't really grasp. Is it overcoming divorce? Lifting your self esteem? Finding happiness via kinky sex with your subordinate? Or is it about military technologies and selling them or maybe about some weird fetish for WW2 warplanes? None of these really fit. It's a weird mix of multiple plot lines that don't go anywhere. They're kinda just there with very little development and no clear main story line besides kinky sex without purpose. There's plenty of that.

I also felt the comedy was forced too much, Wendy almost never speaks like a real human and keeps dropping cheesy, silly one liners in all situations be it sexy, happy or even in sad ones. It felt inappropriate and I couldn't view her as a real human being because of that. And we don't get to know much about her either, most of the details about her life are revealed at the very end of the book. Same with Janet, we don't really know much about her or why her marriage failed or even why she likes Wendy. She just does, that's it.

And Wendy's sister was such a great character with lots of screen time yet Janet never meets her. In fact they don't meet each other's family at all and they don't even talk about it.

The book is technically well written though and there are some good laughs to be had and some steamy sex scenes too (as long as they're not ruined by badly placed humor).

I did finish it in one sitting but I wouldn't read it again if I'd known how it developed.

Even though the cover and blurb appealed to me when selecting this story to read, I can’t say I was entirely sure what to expect.

It says this is a rom-com, and while I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion, this story has a lot of depth, and heat. Humor, as in jokes, can be subjective. What one finds funny another might not. The latter only happened to me upon the mention of Trump, twice.

What really enamored me to these characters was the witty banter between them. Wendy was a breath of fresh air. Despite the story being told from dual point-of-view it took me a while to get to know her boss, Janet. In fact, I found her character contradictory at times.

Wendy's sister is the bomb, I want one just like her! Tina & Liz were also wonderful supporting characters.

The heat - Being a lover of power exchange, the erotic content was an absolute treat for me. The sexual dance, tension and eventual release, was palpable.

Around the 75% mark, from memory, the leading ladies questioned their relationship. I found it a little contrived given the women’s ages and all they had shared. But hey, apparently conflict is mandatory to drive a story.

The outcome left me smiling and I’d definitely read more by this author.

Scissor Link does a lot of things very, very well. The age gap aspect to the romance is great, with the characters addressing it directly, and often irreverently, in several spots. Their chemistry is explosive, and the sex scenes rival the best erotic romance that came out this year (seriously, there’s a scene with a glove, and it’s unlike anything else out there). It also does something interesting with the boss/employee dynamic, especially given that power play is part of their kink. More than all of that together, however, is the humor. Scissor Link is hilarious and had me laughing until I was in tears. The dialogue is sharp and witty, and even the non-dialogue text has perfect comedic moments.

Oh dear god where to start?

I'm so disappointed. Reading the summary of this book I was so excited to get tucked into it, thinking this will be at least 3,5 star rating. Now I wish I had skipped it altogether. The book started off great and had some great moments like the first time Wendy sees Janet and the very funny dialogue between Wendy and her sister Regan. This all ended for me when
From that point on the story was ruined for me. It was bad enough I had to skip all the pages that droned on and on about airplane types and models. Then there was the dream that Janet had describing her as wanting to be dominated by Wendy but throughout the book the exact opposite happened.

I really can't stand Janet she's this totally controlling, type A, narcissistic and downright cold woman. Wendy I really liked in the beginning she seemed this kind, outgoing, witty and generally sweet person who I later wished would just grow a backbone already and stand up to Janet. She is described as this soft butch who fixes her own motorcycle and can change a car tire but when Janet is practically forcing herself on her she acts like it was no big deal and was still willing to immediately have sex with her afterwards. That scene was just upsetting as Janet was downright aggressive yelling at her to open her legs.

I ended up skimming the last couple of chapters because I wanted to "finish" the book. I wish I could say at least the end is satisfying and maybe it is for other readers but I even skimmed through the epilogue. I don't know what happened during the writing of this book because I absolutely loved the author's other novel Ex-Wives of Dracula

This was a absolute joy to read. I was so happy to discover one of my favorite fanfiction writers graduated into being a published author. Congratulations, it is well deserved!

Scissor Link has a lot going for it. It is very funny with plenty of pop culture references. It is hot, Georgette Kaplan writes very imaginative (and original) sexytimes. It is also very intelligent writing and Kaplan does not shy away from the deeper material.

Do yourself a favor and read it.

I quite enjoyed this. 4.25 stars.

The plot plays with a boss/employee romantic relationship dynamic. Of course, it’s highly inappropriate but also part of what makes the story fun and perhaps why the reader picked it up in the first place.

I found the two leads, Wendy and Janet, to be intriguing because they are such unique characters in and of themselves and then to each other. The author chose to give them nuance making them less of a stereotype and much more interesting overall.

Wendy is young, “out of Janet’s league”, funny, irreverent and just sort of a bouncing ball of energy. However, she’s goal focused when she needs to be and highly intelligent. Wendy is goofy/geeky yet in many respects has confidence in herself as a person.

Janet is a rod of contained energy and elegance, always in control. The author could’ve easily made her a bitch but she didn’t. We find Janet to be a good person that is very flawed and has a deep crack in *her* self-worth outside of the workplace.

It makes for an interesting mix and creates some natural chemistry and conflict between the two.

The quality of writing is high. I didn’t find “Scissor Link” to be laugh out loud funny but it was definitely exceptionally amusing throughout. I thought the glove scene was epic and reason enough to read the book alone. Despite the elevated humor, there is a touch of sadness, heart, and there’s some realness to it.

The dialogue is fantastic, the distinct perspectives of being in Janet vs Wendy’s head and the reveal of character is excellent, and there’s a great supporting cast.

Yes, I recommend.

Wendy Cedar is an intern for an aerospace engineering company with diverse interests, think Lockheed Martin. Wendy is totally unsatisfied with her career up to this point. Her boss is a mega-jerk who treats her like a high school student rather than the masters in engineering grad that she is. What makes matters even worse her love life is even more dismal. Everything changes when Janet Lace enters the picture and not only steals her heart but gives her a chance to advance her career.

Janet is a recent divorcee. Her wife of forever is having a mid-life crisis and therefore leaves Janet for a new woman and a new career. Janet is used to her life being more routine, so when her wife leaves her for another woman and a new career, Janet isn't all that sad, she's more lost than anything. To make matters worse she has begun having a crush on the much younger, Wendy, who she just acquired on her team.

This book is an interesting combination. One part romantic comedy, one part edgy and then mix in a bit of BDSM thrown in just to keep you on your toes. This interesting combination works because of the fun and quirky banter between the two mains. Kaplan is extremely skilled in creating dramatic and interesting dialogue between her characters. Where I would say the book is a bit weak is that while you like Wendy and Janet, you don't completely buy into their relationship. I never felt like oh yes they will make it, this is true love. I think the book needed to spend more time with the characters together. Wendy and Janet's relationship is in the building stage and then all the sudden goes at breakneck speed till the end. I wanted more togetherness. Overall this book is fun, and well written the romance left me a tad flat. Still a huge fan of Georgette Kaplan's work thus far though!

I don't remember laughing so hard in a while. I loved this book! It's witty, hilarious, filled with humor and great quirks... I personally think that the character of Wendy is masterfully written! While Janet is an older, self-collected, full of self-esteem hot woman, Wendy is a gem! She seems confused and absentminded, but is a very smart, professional and good looking, even though she's might not necessarily think that about herself in certain times. I actually loved their relationship, because the way it was written and described is, in my opinion, everything but the mainstream.
There are parts of the book where I laughed out loud and was going around the house reading paragraphs to the others so they can laugh as well.
I would gladly recommend this book to my friends and to people who are looking for a witty, humorous, quick-reading rom-com.

The book opens with a self pity from Wendy. Kinda depressing actually.
She's describing herself as the worst version of Megan Fox. (Is there a worst version of Megan Fox?)
I have mixed emotions about this book.
Frankly, I don't know if I like it or what.
I don't feel their connection. Well, maybe at some point. It's like Janet is just using Wendy as a rebound because she's afraid to be alone. So the first person who appreciates her she eagerly jumps ahead.
Wendy, on the other hand, I don't really understand her. There are times that she's full of self pity and the next she's boosted with confidence.
Did they really had sex here or maybe I just missed it?
It's more of a sexting, phone sex or I'll just watch you make yourself come kind of thing.
So I don't know. I would appreciate it if the author made a nice one romantic night for them that doesn't involve a business trip or a quick meeting.
Overall it's a nice quick read. :)
If you like Age gaps, Airplanes maybe you'll like this one.

3.5 rounding up to 4 because I really like the author's first book so I'll give this a chance.

Entertaining erotic romance story with some light BDSM scenes. The relationship is between Wendy, a 26 year old low-level employee in an aeronautical company, and Janet, her 44 year old recently divorced boss.

The dialogues are witty and funny, though sometimes the punch lines seem too polished for a real conversation. However, the main characters are well rounded and have their own distinctive voice that reflect the generational gap and their personalities. There is a good amount of pop culture references that I found hard to follow but I imagine it depends on the age of the reader and nationality.

Overall, a light entertaining read. 3.5 stars.

I thought this was gonna be just a quick erotica/romance to pass the time, I didn't realize it would be so much fun. The book was so funny and the relationship so cute I almost didn't care about the sex (it was p hot though). There were some inconsistencies with the writing that bothered me, but this was exactly what I needed after a heavy book and a long week.

p.s. did this used to be a fanfic? The premise and the characters are familiar but the plot takes a different turn

My first reaction to "Scissor Link" by Georgette Kaplan was I loved it. Of the two books in her series I so wish I had read this book first. Elizabeth Smile got a bad deal in the second book.

I really enjoy Kaplan's writing style whether it be the quick banter or the strength of the minor characters in the story. Wendy was charming as the young woman smitten with her boss. She's intelligent, outspoken and sensual right from the start. She made for a great character, loved from the beginning. Janet, her boss and obsession was not the strong ice queen we've seen before. She's given some backstory which has chipped away at the ice. In the end I was happy with the story.

I think this is an author to watch.

In this witty rom-com (full of sex scenes, I must say) Wendy found the love of her life at work. It was love at first sight. With her boss.
Well, I suppose that if you like rom-coms, this is a rather good book. But unfortunately this is not exactly my cup of tea. And while I liked Wendy a lot... I didn't connect with Janet, the other main character.

So, we have Wendy. A young employee of an aeronautical company. This young woman fantasize about the things she would like to do to her new boss. That new boss is Janet, trying to be a cold bitch. Not so much making it. It seems the perfect mix for a quick rom-com read. Well, it kind of is. And it kind of not.

I really liked Wendy. She is like your typical best friend. Full of knowledge about cultural stuff and the one who is always making references about movies and books. Well described character. Then we have Janet, i don't know what the author wanted to do with her to be honest. I sensed the chemistry between this two characters at first, but then everything happened so fast. And suddenly, within pages of starting their relationship, we were in that infamous three word stage. And everything that happened after that, i saw it coming a mile before.

Overall the book is ok. Hence my 3 stars rating.

This is a book I will be rereading, and I'm interested in reading more by Georgette Kaplan too. The characters were very enjoyable, the engineering aspects were a great sub-plot (as much as I could tell, not being an aeronautics engineer), and it was just all-around a great read. I'm sorry it took me so long to get to this book.

I'm having a difficult time rating this book. This is the first book by Kaplan. Although her first book, The Ex-wives of Dracula was well rated, it being a YA novel it didn't appeal to me.

One thing I learned - sometimes staying up until 2AM finishing a book isn't a good thing. I ended up re-reading the last couple of chapters because I realized in the morning that I read it half asleep and didn't absorb what I did read.

I liked.
Wendy - Smart, funny, quick, and kind. I have a friend who is just as quick and it is awesome to witness. And enviable. I'm usually a minute too late (if ever) with a comeback. One of my favorite lines of Wendy's - "It's like porn for bees." when describing Regan's bouquet of flowers.
The dialogue. Kaplan does this so well.
Their friends - Elizabeth, Tina and Wendy's sister Regan.
Janet - I do like her. Sexy. Quick. Complicated. But she is still an enigma to me by the end of the book.

When I first started the book. I cheered when I realized that we would hear Janet's PoV along with Wendy's. I wanted to know more about her. We do get to know her, but I felt like the ending was rushed, everything was resolved on a picnic bench. I see why Wendy was attracted to Janet, I just never felt I knew why Janet really loved Wendy. Also, I would have loved to witness Janet meeting Regan and her family...

I will have to try Kaplan's first book, for the dialogue alone. I'm looking forward to her next book. a 3.5 star book. Just not good enough for my 4 star shelf.

[ I requested/received a review copy from the publisher (via NetGalley) ]

Told from both characters' perspectives, it's about Wendy. a witty 26-year-old who finds herself lusting after an attractive woman who turns out to be the assistant vice president of the company she's doing an internship in, her actual boss soon after. She's Janet Lace, a successful and alluring woman who commands respect, and soon to be divorced. One thing leads to another and we see them exploring a relationship beyond employer-employee.

And having enjoyed the author's debut novel, Ex-Wives of Dracula, it was no surprise I greatly enjoyed this one as well. It's well written, engaging, and very funny at times. I loved the characters, and I really liked Wendy's sister and the relationship they had, and of course, also the relationship between the protagonists, I believed in their attraction for each another and they had some great steamy scenes! Having said that, however. regarding the 'romance' part, I'm not sure I believe they were 'in love' () or felt something deeper than strong physical attraction and maybe some 'interest' in getting to know each other better, especially from Janet's side. But that might be just me, and I still really enjoyed them together.

Overall, I had a great time reading this 'kinky rom-com'! And I'm definitely looking forward to reading more by this author.

The synopsis says this is a Rom-Com but I feel it’s much more than that. It’s edgy and has some timid BDSM play, which I think would have drawn me to the book more.

Wendy is an intern at an Aerospace company. She’s pushing boundaries and impressing people… One of those people is Janet her boss and the woman she has a major crush on. When Janet accidently reads a email Wendy sent to her best friend about having sex with her boss the table are turned and the fun begins…

I really liked Janet, which even I thought was weird because she has the opposite personality that I normally enjoy reading. I like the relationship dynamic between both Janet and Wendy although felt at times it would have been nice to see them engage in some more loving or romantic conversations or maybe be more tactile with one another. In saying that it could be part of their interesting dynamic and it was extremely interesting.

The sex scenes where hot and well thought out… I just think Wendy and Janet should have really made serious decisions about what the expected from each other sexually… it all felt a bit unthinkingly enthusiastic and eager.

I will be interested to see what comes next from this author. Watch this space… 4 Stars

I received this ARC in exchange for a honest review.

Hot.

That's how I would describe this book if I had to, which I do because I'm writing a review for it.
Janet is hot, her wittyness, her intellect, how she treats her employees, how she dresses and her personality are just downright hot and very sexy.

Wendy is adorbale, dorky, nerdy and just very sweet. But also very sexy, dreams-about-very-hot-office-sex-with-her-boss-and-emails-about-it-too-her-friend sexy. Which is slightly different from the normal romance stories you read. In which only one is sexy and the other one is adorable and sweet and innocent. Wendy is still kinda innocent, but she doesn't show it.
Hot.

I started reading this book while being surrounded by other people. Don't recommend that. Did get a lot of practice looking innocent while feeling very very naughty though. Also Wendy's humor? I bow to that. Seriously brilliant, I wish I was that witty.

I would very much like to thank Georgette Kaplan for writing this book. I really, really liked this.

DNF at like 15-20ish % in. This just doesn’t seem for me. The big dream sex scene left me clicking away. I’m just… rlly over the age gap trope of the older control loving lady who wants to be dommed by a young ingenue. SOMETIMES THE YOUNGER WOMAN WOULD LIKE THE OLDER WOMAN TO TAKE CHARGE, ACTUALLY.

Its just so goddamn prevalent and that, combined with the humor right off that didn’t quite grab me, I think this one just isn’t going to be my fav, and there are loads of other things I’m more excited to read. I’m in my ‘will drop and move on era’ if I’m not vibing with it. So, alas.

I received an ARC from Ylva Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

When I saw that the premise of this story involved an intern/peon and her hot boss, I had high hopes. Afterall, I love a good romcom and that particular plot line could present myriad opportunities for humor. The thing about Scissor Link is that it contains a fair amount of depth in the introspection of the characters such that I felt like the story itself had an identity crisis. Parts of it were quirky and funny as promised. Parts of it were hot, and it dabbled in bdsm pretty successfully. I enjoyed the book, but I almost wish the author had settled more on comedy or drama. My experience of the book was one of inconsistency and confused expectations. If it was going to be a serious exploration of the death of the Janet character's lengthy marriage, and her feelings about the subsequent rebound relationship with a provocative young employee, then a lot of the campy quirk was misplaced. If it was meant to be a quirky fantasy come to life for young Wendy and her smoking hot dom of a boss, then maybe the whole fresh divorce woes should have been avoided. All that said, I did enjoy the story, and I do think it is worth reading, but be prepared that this is not straight forward romantic comedy.

Oh my goodness, this audiobook did NOT work for me. I almost DNFd it a few times but stuck with it, hoping something in it might appeal. Didn't happen.

While I'm all for the boss/employee forbidden relationship premise, you have to believe one or both would risk their jobs for them to go there. While intern-turned-employee Wendy Cedar is extremely competent in her aerospace job, her personality is that of a 15 year old boy. Bad jokes, crude. I couldn't reconcile it with who she was supposed to be.

She lusted after the woman who would become her boss, Janet Lace, from the first moment she laid eyes on her. Brilliant, stunning and strict but fair, she's lesbian catnip from a distance. But she's recovering from a painful relationship breakup/divorce and is a mess over it. So although it makes sense that she would be swayed by someone wanting her so badly when she was feeling so rejected isn't terribly surprising, but how it comes about - especially how it starts - was completely over the top. And the way it was written, it was about sex and lust most of the time, though we as readers are supposed to believe that Wendy falls in love with her. And it's never really clear if the feelings are reciprocated.

While the sex was supposed to be really hot, it fell flat for me. I also found the wrap-up/reveal unbelievable. Anastasia Watley's narration didn't add or detract from the story - even that was just okay.

I love Georgette Kaplan's Candace Cushing series, but this one I just can't recommend.

What a wonderful thing to be able to go and get Wendy back on her skin, whenever she chose.

Well... this is kinda unfortunate! When I updated around 1/3 of the way through the book, I was so optimistic and really enjoying myself with this romance, and I figured it would only go up from there. But alas, it went down. I don't think it's a bad book, but after the halfway mark, it started to lose its charm, wasn't half as funny, and the characters did and said some things that rubbed me the wrong way. 3 stars isn't a bad rating, but for a book that started off SO WELL, I'm disappointed that this is what I'm landing on.

This is an age gap, boss-employee workplace rom-com. Rom-coms are always so hit or miss for me, because if my sense of humour doesn't align with the author's, then it can start feeling tedious and try-hard. But I really loved the way this was told at first, and the humour was spot on. A bit eye-roll worthy at times, a little over the top, but so funny. I loved Wendy's voice, how quippy and sarcastic she was, and on more than one occasion, I actually burst out laughing. Which does not happen often to me. Wendy falls heads over heels for an older woman in an elevator, a woman who she later comes to realise is her boss at this big aerospace company. And everything about the way it was described was so funny and sweet and charming and again, genuinely funny. The author uses a lot of real life references and pop culture references, but in a way that actually wasn't obnoxious. And for me, that's saying something, because I almost ALWAYS think pop culture references are obnoxious. That was in Wendy's POV. Janet's POV, at least at first, was starkly different in a way I really enjoyed. She recently separated from her wife, and is just going through the motions, dealing with her feelings about that, and then Wendy unexpectedly swoops into her life. Their flirting was so good. Their banter was everything. The scene with the soup had me in stitches. This was a true rom-com in every sense of the word, and I was eating it up. I loved the scenes with Wendy's sister and her family; that was such a fun dynamic and made me smile a lot.

Things started to go downhill maybe halfway through? A little before that, even. Like, I didn't like the pacing. Things seemed to be moving forward sexually waaaaay faster than they moved romantically. That definitely isn't a bad thing, but the romance really never seemed like it caught up. I have a great idea of why each of these women are attracted to each other, and how great they are in bed, but the romance was negligible. We moved from one point to the other soo quickly. I like a good taboo boss/employee romance when it's done well, but they were so blasé and casual about it. There are reasons for that, on Wendy's side, but I couldn't believe that Janet didn't hesitate at least a little. Some of the sexy, fun shenanigans were kinda uncomfortable, because there was no discussion. They didn't talk half as much as they needed to, and as much as I loved their quippy banter, I wanted them to have serious discussions way more often. I truly didn't even feel like they knew each other.

Also, for more than half the book, I forgot what their jobs were, because they barely talked about it. But then they did start talking about it, about schematics and planes and weapons and working for the army and stratagems for war and both women became abruptly so much less attractive to me, lol. Is that shallow? Sorry!! I don't care about military contractors or whatever. I found the conflict to be clumsy, and there are certain characters that should have been introduced way earlier, if they were going to play a part in the ending. All the humour and references to movies and TV shows that I had found so amusing in the beginning started to really grate on my nerves. Like, there were just SO many of them, it started to feel a little forced. The relationship conflict at the end felt like it had no weight, because again, the book had not sufficiently convinced me they had real feelings for each other. As a romance, this started off so well, but then just fizzled.

(This is also pretty shallow, but I was hoping for dominant, butch-leaning Wendy, and I did not get that lol. It literally happened once upon a dream, and never again.)

Listened to the audiobook as read by Anastasia Watley, which makes me even sadder that this gets such a mid rating from me. Because this might be one of my favourites that she's ever narrated. She did such a good job with the humour, the timing of Wendy's little jokes, the intonation on some of those one-liners. It was soooo good. While this was a bit of a disappointment, I still want to read more from the author. There were lots of great things about the writing, but the book just wasn't as well-rounded as I might have liked.

I was given a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

Scissor Link is a lesbian romantic comedy. Unfortunately, it only made me laugh once (a great bon mot about Donald Trump) and I didn't find it very romantic. So as a lesbian romantic comedy, I'd give it a one out of three – it's definitely a lesbian storyline.

The story is told from both protagonists' points of view. I didn't like Janet Lace very much (no wonder her wife left her – I hope Roberta got a good settlement in the divorce because she deserved it). Also, the unreliable narrator can be a fantastic thought-provoking device, but it doesn't really work in a rom/com because the reader needs to be able to like and trust the leads, even with their flaws. So although Wendy Cedar seems a likeable person, she is more than she initially presents herself to be – not in a bad way, just in lying through omission.

Other readers may not have the same issues I have with Scissor Link so here are the two biggest problems I have with the storyline, and they are interrelated. Firstly, I find the abuse of work power relationships reprehensible. The author rightly calls out two other managers at the firm for abusing their power (it seems like a toxic workplace environment), but doesn't seem to recognise the actual or potential power abuse of the sexual relationship between the two protagonists. Haven't we learnt anything about the dangers and inappropriateness of transmitting sexually explicit writing and pictures on workplace electronic devices?

Secondly – and I own this as my vanilla self, not as a judgement against others – I do not find sexual dominance games a turn on, and I definitely don't find them romantic. This meant that the story failed to move me. Don't get me wrong, it's all light dominance stuff, no hardcore s/m or b/d, so if you find that titillating then this book is probably for you. It just wasn't for me.
