Jane Eyre: Manga Classic by Charlotte Bronte and Stacy King is a 2016 UDON Entertainment publication.

If are reading this review on Goodreads, then you can tell from my profile pic/avatar that I’m a huge fan of Jane Eyre. So, with my developing interest in Manga/Comics/Graphic Novels, choosing this book was a no- brainer for me.

Yet, at the same time, I might have been taking a risk, since the story is one my favorites. What if the graphics didn’t live up to my expectations or what if the story was restructured in a way that disappointed me? Well, I need not have worried. Stacy King has been the illustrator for several other Manga Classics and has always done a wonderful job of formatting these beloved stories into the Manga format. This one was no exception.

I’ve read Jane Eyre several times, have seen several movie adaptations, as well, but reading it with these vivid illustrations truly brings the story to life in a way anyone can appreciate and enjoy.

I won’t rehash the plot, as it is familiar to most everyone. I will say that this book is part of the reason I developed a love for Gothic fiction and is one of the reasons why it holds a special place in my heart.

So, enjoying this story again, in a new format has been a real treat. The artist did an amazing job with the characters’ facial expressions and period clothing, while adhering to the unique Manga art form. Although, I must admit, Jane isn’t really all that plain, in this book- she’s simply adorable!! The book is structured in such a way the reader is truly engaged and the story flows at a nice fresh pace.

Overall, this is another outstanding addition to the Manga Classics library.

Jane Eyre was an orphan. She was poorly treated by her aunt and cousins. Her aunt wanted to get rid of her so she was sent to Lowood Institution - a charity school for orphaned girls. She grew up well-educated and well-mannered.

She started working as a governess and fell in love with her master - Edward Rochester who has a dark and secret past. The story beyond this point is so intriguing and captivating that I couldn't refrain myself from reading further despite the late hour and finished it by 3 am.

I admire Jane's character for her high moral values. She never compromised her dignity and morality. I didn't like Edward Rochester much. He was overly dramatic.

This manga is well-drawn. I enjoyed reading it. The illustrations captured the essence of Victorian era with all the detailing of furniture and dresses.

Anyone can read this Manga Classic even if you are not a huge fan of classic literature.

I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.

Before all those other historical fictions in which a penniless governess gets together with a rich, older gentleman, there was Jane Eyre, which was published in 1847 by the eldest of the three Brontë sister writers - Charlotte, Emily, and Anne.

As I've enjoyed some of Jane Austen's books, I had hoped to find Jane Eyre to be equally interesting. While both authors pointed out societal foibles, they had very different approaches. Austen deftly wielded a scalpel of skewering wit while Brontë deployed a bludgeon. Brontë wrote her morality tale of prevailing virtue in the style of the "Romantic period." According to my edition's supplementary section, romanticism emphasized emotion and individualism as well as glorified nature. And both main protagonists were singularly individualistic for their times.

The reader meets Jane during her oppressive childhood when she's about 10 years old. Her maternal grandparents had disapproved of a poor clergyman for a son-in-law and they subsequently cut off Jane's mother for her marriage. But after Jane became an orphan during infancy, she lived as a virtual outsider with her maternal uncle's family. After her uncle died, Jane was neglected and maligned by her aunt and bullied by her cousins. Jane was sent away to a charity boarding school for orphaned girls. While Lowood School was meant to be an austere and strict experience, Jane happily resided there until age 18 because living with her relatives was far worse in comparison. Through a school friend's influence, Jane developed a pious outlook and moral fortitude. These sustained her as life presented her with trials in the next couple of years.

One of these challenges was the wealthy Mr. Rochester and Jane's love for him. He was about twenty years her senior and very contrary in nature. Jane was employed as the governess for Adèle, Rochester's ward and possibly his illegitimate daughter. Against societal conventions between persons of differing social ranks, the two protagonists developed feelings for one another. Ah, but Rochester's secrets could no longer be suppressed and they culminated in a crisis point for both parties.
Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal — as we are!

I'm not going to reveal much more of the plotline. Brontë had written a very heavy-handed tale in which Jane's virtue was rewarded. Rochester's sins came back to haunt him as he had to endure his own trial by fire. If I had been assigned this in high school, I'm sure that I would have been encouraged to analyze the symbolism of the two major women (reading Wide Sargasso Sea would also be recommended) and the two key male protagonists. Jane's boldness in speaking up for herself was in contravention of society's requirement for demure females. This should have appealed to me but the plotline with its convenient coincidences just didn't win me over. And good grief, why did Jane even fall in love with Rochester? Was it because he was the first man to exhibit tender feelings for her, the unloved and unwanted orphan?

Because the regular versions of Jane Eyre exceed 500 pages and I doubted that I would love this novel, I read the Manga Classics Jane Eyre edition illustrated by SunNeko Lee as a shortcut. I'm very glad that I had done so even though it's in black and white. There were two other minor issues because of the Manga style. Both Jane and Rochester weren't supposed to be attractive but Manga's big-eyed characterization made them look appealing. Jane's displays of individualism usually occurred when she was upset so she was depicted as a shouting virago during her outbursts, and perhaps this was contrary to the original text. My rating reflects my feelings about the story and not the Manga adaptation which was done very well and merits 4 stars.

Jane Eyre is one of my favourite books- I must have read and re-read it at least twenty times. Therefore, I was very excited to see this manga version of Charlotte Bronte’s novel.
The artwork is simply gorgeous. I loved the way dramatic images substitute lengthy descriptions adding to the pace of the story. The adaptation is faithful to the original and very easy to follow, making it a quick and enjoyable read. There are cliff-hangers at the end of each chapter, which foreshadow upcoming events.
I felt it was a great way to introduce new readers to the old classic, esp. those who feel daunted by reading a lengthy Victorian novel. They will discover amazing characters (my favourite are Helen and Miss Temple) and an engaging love story between Jane and Mr Rochester, two kindred spirits.

Two years ago, I was able to read the unabridged story of Jane Eyre. I fell in love with the story right away and I've finished reading it within a week without skipping any parts or pages; I even consider it number one on my favorite classic books. I also got to watched several movie adaptations of this novel: from the latest 2011 version, 1983 and yes — even the 1973 version. That shows how much I admire this classic.

When I saw that there's a graphic novel published, I didn't waste any time to check out if they made a good adaptation of this well-loved novel. Thumbs up for all those who are behind the publication because everything about this is magnificent. I would definitely recommend this to my friends or acquaintances, especially those who still haven't read the book, to check out this graphic novel; so they will be also included to the the millions who got enchanted with the story.

Jane Eyre is my favorite work of classic literature. I’m happy to say that this is a very accessible edition of the work. It’s an easy read that is mostly true to the original book, and since it is in a manga format, it would likely be less overwhelming for many people to read. The e-book was a little difficult to read since it’s a manga (back to front), but it wasn’t the most difficult.

I really enjoyed the art style overall. The illustrator did a good job at drawing the settings and using descriptions from the book to capture the general atmosphere and mood of the work. The illustrations really brought this story to life in a meaningful way.

I only had a few things I disliked about this work. There were some instances of awkward wording throughout the manga (one example was “on equality with them”). Grace Poole was illustrated as a young and beautiful woman, but in the book she is explicitly described as older and not attractive. Similarly, Jane is supposed to be very plain, but she is drawn to be quite lovely. Mr. Rochester isn’t supposed to be handsome at all (major plot point), but he is drawn in a very handsome way. Now it might just be that it’s difficult to create ugly, non-cute characters in a manga style, but I still would have preferred some changes to the depictions of these characters. I also felt that this version wasn’t true to the intent of the book in one place in particular: when St. John proposes to Jane. Jane was firm the whole time about refusing, but in this version she seems to give in for a bit – part of Jane’s character is that she’s firm with what she believes and is true to herself, so I think this was misrepresented in this particular scene of this version.

For anyone who has felt intimidated or uninterested in sitting down and reading Jane Eyre, I highly recommend this version of the work. Except for a few minor things, this is very true to the novel and is a great take on a classic.

I received a complimentary copy of this work through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Having never read Jane Eyre before, I thought a Manga Classics edition would be a great introduction to the story, and I was not disappointed! The artwork is so lovely (I was especially fond of the chibi styles in certain silly or sweet moments), and the layout and pacing was very easy to follow.

As for the story itself, I actually knew surprisingly little about it, but I was surprised by how hard it was to like Mr. Rochester! I rarely enjoy the love interests in classics, so I shouldn't have been shocked, but he is truly awful through most of the story and I didn't care much for him until the very end (perhaps that's the point, though). There were also much heavier religious overtones than I'm accustomed to in my usual reading, but it's to be expected from classics. Between these two things, the story wasn't a perfect read for me, but I still enjoyed it a great deal and am so happy that I chose the Manga Classics rendition for my first introduction. I'm not sure if I have much interest in reading the full novel, but I'm pleased to know the story now and even plan on purchasing a finished copy of this manga to reread in the future. ♥

Thank you so much to Udon Entertainment for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

As an older fan of manga and graphic novels, I was happy to receive a copy of this. I wasn’t sure what to expect, I have never read Jane Eyre nor have I ever read a classic book in manga form. I can honestly say that I really enjoyed this-the story of Jane Eyre and the struggles she endured throughout her life and the beautiful artwork, layout and pacing of the book. Jane Eyre Manga Classic is a good introduction to the actual classic and a great read for anyone, regardless of age. I definitely plan on reading Jane Eyre next month. Highly recommend to fans of classics, manga and graphic novels.

Jane Eyre is the story of an orphan girl, despised by her relatives for being poor, and ending in an orphanage of the time, with cold and hunger. Then she will end up going as a girl's governess in Thornfield Hall, there her employer is a temperamental and strange man named Rochester.

j

This is a classic of literature, and is even considered feminist by many of the character's ideas (which are from believed come from Charlotte Brontë's autobiographical material). The relevant thing about Jane is that a woman who rebels against injustices, and whose bad circumstances fail to undermine her own inner strength, refusing to be trampled by others or to give in to her own convictions.

Until now, I had not had very good luck with these adaptations of famous novels to graphic novels, so I was pleasantly surprised that I liked this version.

My only problem with the drawing is that Edward Rochester is too pretty, too shōjo, and he is not the rough-faced man described in the novel.

The edition contains several explanations about the original work, and the time; In addition to drawings and sketches that were made.

------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve never really gotten along with classics very well but I’ve always wanted to know what happens in some of the most popular classics, so when I heard about the manga classics, I immediately hopped on the opportunity to read one. Jane Eyre was definitely a great place to start with the manga classics and I can’t wait to read more of them.

I could not stop reading this manga. I was soaking in the details on every page as I read it. The illustrations were beautiful and the story was extremely interesting.

Jane was a great protagonist. She went through so much, but she was resilient through it all and she was a kind soul who had a positive impact on all the people she interacted with. Her story started off as somewhat of a Cinderella step-family story, but she became so much more than just a neglected child by the end of her journey.

The romance was my favorite part of this manga. It was swoonworthy and beautiful. There was so much tension built into the romance that made me unsure of the couple’s fate.

A lot of my praises were for the story as a whole, but I need to also praise the people who adapted this story into this manga format. I’ve had to read my fair share of classics and nearly all of them are dull and written in a complicated old English. It takes a skilled creator to make a classic story into one that I actually enjoy, so the creators of this manga did an incredible job.

Overall I highly recommend this manga to everyone. Don’t be afraid to pick up a manga classic if you aren’t into classics. I’m sure everyone can find something that they like about them. Oh, and it’s also worth noting that there’s some analysis of the story as a whole at the end of this manga. If you are studying Jane Eyre for school, I’m sure this manga and the analysis at the end will be beneficial to you.

[Thank you to Udon Entertainment and Netgalley for providing my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.]

Growing up Jane Eyre was one of the first english books that I've ever read, of coure it took me 2 months to read it because i didn't understand much at the time, but still loved it nonetheless [i reread it a couple of years ago so now i fully get it don't worry haha ], so this book still holds a special place in my heart.

With that being said, when i saw the manga adaptation i couldn't be more excited and thankfully it did not disappoint .
The characters ,the storyline, the sass between Jane and Mr.Rochester were portrayed beautifully i loved that, i felt connected to these characters ,loved the art it's manga art after all what's not to love about it,right! .

Glad that these kind of classics adaptations exist, that was my first and it won't be the last <3

Jane Eyre was one of my Nan’s favourite books so I have intended to read it for the past 30 years. Over the years I’ve tried and failed to make it past Jane’s childhood. I was so mad at the way she was treated, especially by Mrs Reed and John, and when I finally made it to the beginning of her time at Lowood I was so infuriated by the injustice of her life that I discarded this story and moved on to something else; probably something with unicorns.

Now I’ve finally learned the rest of the story thanks to manga! While I’m not the hugest fan of Jane’s story due to my romantiphobia (I would like to think that had I been in Jane’s shoes I would have bailed on both potential suitors and enjoyed my life as an independent single woman) I was engaged in her story from beginning to end. I appreciated Jane’s strong will and independent spirit, especially considering the adversity she faced, and I think it was Jane’s perseverance that would have drawn my Nan to this story.

I adored the illustrations in this book, although Jane’s gorgeous doe eyes made it difficult to take her seriously when she spoke of her plain looks. I loved that, in true manga style, this story reads from right to left and was surprised by how quickly I became used to reading this way.

Thank you to NetGalley and UDON Entertainment for the opportunity to read this book. I’m all doe eyes for manga right now and want to work my way through the rest of their Manga Classics series.

I really enjoyed manga adaption of Jane Eyre. I have red this story so long ago, I forgot why I have stopped reading at around 80% mark.

The language is bit odd and I'd not suggest to any beginners to read this. But may be I felt this problem as English is my 2nd language or I've problem reading old English. Whatever might be the reason, it was creepy and interesting till then end (at-least manga was) to help me complete this story for once.

Believe it or not, but I only recently became accustomed with the complete story of Jane Eyre. For some reason, it was completely glossed over in school and I never read it, or even watched a movie. The crazy wife in the attic part, however, I was aware of, as I think is everyone, whether they want to or not.

I’ve been reading the manga classics as they are being published and overall I’ve quite enjoyed them. For myself they do not replace the original works, but more act as an interpretation, as you would also watch a movie adaptation (they would also take about the same time, as manga makes for easy and fast reading). For people who would be less inclined to actually read the classics, I think it is a perfect way to get to know the stories. I liked this adaptation of Jane Eyre, the drawings and style are as I’ve come to expect them and the main points of the story, as far as I’m able to judge this, are conveyed well through the manga.

A nice reading experience. Would recommend.

One thing the world did not need was a manga retooling of Jane Eyre. Jane does not need to be portrayed as a wide eyed Shojo manga heroine who looks like she can barely tie her shoes and drawing her passionate verbal duels with Mr. Rochester as frenetic hand waving Looney Tunes battles complete with little puffs of smoke works about as well as you'd expect.

This had all the romance, girl power, and emotional impact of my left nostril.

Not a bad adaptation, but still far from perfect. This is more for those interested in the plot than those who truly love the story of Jane Eyre. Plot was adapted really well and there were all important moments. What lacked was feeling. Never before had I felt the manipulation of Rochester's conduct towards Jane until this. The real book is written from Jane's point of view, this adaptation was closer to an all knowing story teller. I truly missed feelings and my really dear literary pair was kind of non-existent. I did not feel the depth of emotion at all.

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books of all time! This manga adaptation is beautiful and it manages to capture the essence of the original story perfectly. Jane was so freaking adorable! For me, there is just something refreshing about classics revisited Manga style. Japanese style art flowing across the pages....reading right to left.... It's still the favorite classic tale I know and love. The Manga adaptation just gives a new feel to an old, favorite story.

I've read Jane Eyre probably 50 times. It's one of those stories I can re-read often, but still enjoy. And I loved the Manga Classic version! It follows the book closely, including illustrating most, if not all, of my favorite lines from the book. The artwork is awesome! From Pilot (Rochester's faithful dog) to Mrs. Fairfax, I liked the appearance of all the minor characters. As for major characters....Jane Eyre had a sweet face and Rochester was drawn with just the right amount of brooding darkness. The pages depicting Rochester's hidden, terrible secret as well as other important plot points were perfect!

I am always skeptical of adaptations. I have dnf'd many, many supposed continuations of favorite classic stories or re-tellings/adaptations because they just didn't stay true to my favorite classic stories. I am picky. But I have yet to be disappointed by Manga Classics. The story is always well depicted. The art is awesome each time. It's an enjoyable reading experience for me. I don't find myself frowning about weird plot changes, or missing characters/dialog. For the most part, they stick to the original...just condensing it a bit and illustrating the story. Love it! I'm ordering copies for my keeper shelf!

I thoroughly enjoyed this manga version of Jane Eyre!

Since Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is my favorite novel, I was prepared to be picky about this adaptation. But I was also prepared to be charmed. Happily, I was mostly charmed! They really captured the essence of the characters so well -- Jane is valiant but yearning, Rochester is mercurial but kind, and St. John Rivers is cheerless and misguided.

Best of all, they did not glide over the twin turning points that Bronte hinges her story on -- that Rochester repents of his former ways and attitudes and asks God to help him do better, and that Jane stops relying on her own strength and intelligence and asks God to guide her. It's those two moments that combine to make the happy ending possible, but filmmakers almost never get that right, which means that this manga is superior to most filmed versions of Jane Eyre, imho.

Jane Eyre is an orphan who has to go through a lot of hardships and who I dare to say is one of the first female characters in literature that doesn’t think that being a wife and having kids is her ultimate goal –at least, considering the time it was set in.

She’s this small girl that is always treated poorly by her aunt and cousins, though she never gives them reason to do so. When she gets a little bit older, she studies real hard until she becomes a Governess (from what I understood, is kind of like a private teacher), and she makes a life of her own, away from people who don’t appreciate her.

On the other hand, we have Mr. Rochester, a wealthy man that’s unreadable to most people, but not to Jane. They have this unique connection from the moment they meet and they see the best in each other, despite their different positions. Still, their romance doesn’t happen in a few days. For me, this was more of a slow-burn, which makes it so much better already. Though there’s a huge age-gap between them, I feel like they complement each other to the point that you want them to be together no matter what.

Now, if I must be honest, there is a LOT of drama going on but I never felt like it was too much because Jane Eyre feels like a fresh character in a time where women didn’t really have a voice. I was moved by her friendship with Helen, and the last chapters with Mr. Rochester even made me tear up a bit.

This manga adaptation has a great art and it made me want to read the original work! I’ve been trying to get more into classics and the format is just perfect when it comes to books you might consider heavy readings.

I would totally recommend you to read this in case you haven’t already, and if you’re a fan of Brontë’s original work, you definitely have to see what the manga adaptation brings new to the table!

I received an e-book copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
