David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London. Lloyd-Jones was strongly opposed to Liberal Christianity, which had become a part of many Christian denominations; he regarded it as aberrant. He disagreed with the broad church approach and encouraged evangelical Christians (particularly Anglicans) to leave their existing denominations. He believed that true Christian fellowship was possible only amongst those who shared common convictions regarding the nature of the faith.

David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was married to Bethan Lloyd-Jones

"...what hope is there for man? It is here, it seems to me, that is seen the unique message of the Christian faith. It is not merely good advice, it is not mere morality or ethics, nor is it simply a higher view of life. It is a doctrine that gives due place to the real nature and state of mankind. To use biblical terminology, it declares that a man can be 'born again,' that there can be a radical change in a man's soul. He can become a new man. It is amazing, but it is true."

I wanted to read this book because: 1. I am engaged in the medical field and wanted to hear Lloyd Jones's thoughts on how Christians should view medicine 2. Because I had heard that Lloyd Jones is not a cessationist and wanted to hear his own thoughts on this from his own addresses and words

Lloyd Jones has a great strength, coming from the medical background of diagnosing problems at their root cause (spiritually and physically) and this has greatly prepared and aided him in sermons and counseling. You can see his heart for people in this book perhaps in an even more intimate way than in his preaching. He addresses doctors, and makes sure to talk with them about their own souls as well as the care of their patients' well being in soul, mind and body.

On the second note it was interesting to hear his mention of the continuation of spiritual gifts and also demonic possession. Unfortunately because these were addresses in public, and not the primary purpose of these talks, he did not give much Biblical support of his position of defend statements that I thought warranted support. I am sure he could point to texts and defend his views, but unfortunately that was not given in this book. I still need to see proof, for example, of his position that the Holy Spirit can come and go in a Believer, that a demon can possess a believer, and that the gifts of the spirit continue past the apostolic age.

I liked this book, but sometimes it got into the weeds. It is a helpful application of the Bible and its principles to the medical profession. As a former physician and pastor, Lloyd Jones is well qualified to address this matter.

Excellent book. Even though many of his discourses were given in the late 1970's, early 1980's it is still pertinent for today.
