Wtf ... how how how did no reviews warn about this? Firstly, the H never fought for the h at all. But I get it, he's a broken character. What I can't understand is how he almost had sex with the h's sister, they kissed, her panties were removed AND when the h asked them if anything happened... they say nothing did?! Wtf. How is this supposed to be a resolved book. Before they even hooked up they were way too close for my liking!!! I was wondering if the h was meant to be the sister or her! And I disliked the sister... I feel nothing for her and I think it's disgusting what they did.......

How is this meant to be love when there's lies?

When the h asks if something happened, the H says that the sister only "hit on him". When the sister is speaking to the h about that night, she says

"I made it pretty clear that I wanted to sleep with him. He turned me down of course. He wasn't the slightest bit interested in me."

Umm no you almost had sex... and thing is, they never explain why they lied ... just as if it's fine ...

And the worst part?! How does the author think this convo is okay! The hero admits he would've slept with the h's sister if the sister didn't push him away.

"You know, I've been wondering ..." she said, her smile growing even wider. "That day on your deck, you were really going to fuck me weren't you?"

I winced. "Stella..."

"Come on Alex, KM not going to leap on you and steal your virtue... what's left of it... but we're friends. You can tell me."

"Christ, Stella!"

"Tell me!" She insisted.

"Okay, yes. I would have fucked you on the deck. You kept pushing me and I lost it. I feel bad about it, really had and I'm sorry, okay!"

Stella laughed. "Oh don't apologise, it was hot! Besides, it's nice to know that you don't find me completely physically repulsive."

"You're busting my balls," I said flatly, and she cackled loudly."

"Why yes I am. But only because it's so much fun. Don't worry handsome, I know you're spoken for, and hopefully one day soon my idiot of a sister will come to her senses."

I'm sorry, but I swear that feels like foreplay. It feels like Stella could be a h of a book and the point of it is that the H is interested in another woman. At this point Stella is advocating for Alex and her sister. But it comes down to the fact that they would've indeed had sex if they weren't on a porch and if Stella hadn't stopped it cause she didn't want it on a porch.

So it makes me ask: would the h have been okay with it if he had told her the truth? That he almost had sex with her sister? Given their history.... I would'nt have but at least I wanted her to know! She had the right! Especially given their history! And I wanted the H to feel SO guilty over his actions that he'd have to tell her. This was cheating to me :( and the fact it was so glossed over as if it's not a big deal infuriated me ...

And how could the hero say him and the sister are close friends and that they'll stay close friends ?! They're obviously attracted to each other!

Ugh I wish someone had warned me :(

What's crazy is that this would've been a 5 stars for me due to the emotions, but yes. The cheating (even if they were separated) seriously?! The sister!!! Ruined it completely...

Was disappointed with this one. Have read this author before, the Sebastian books and enjoyed them. First off, the cover!! Your man on the cover is NOTHING like the guy described in the book. I nearly didn't buy the book because of the cover. Fickle, you might think but, hey, it's my money at the end of the day.

There was sort of too much happening and nothing happening. Yeah, he was a bit tortured but I never really felt for him. Or her! Even the kid didn't do much for me. I liked Stan though.

I don't like giving low ratings but I have to be honest.

2.5 stars but will up it to 3!

POWERFUL STORY!

By the end of the prologue, there was no question about it ...... this was going to be an emotional read. I knew I loved this author's work and writing style, and had an unwavering desire to walk along the journey and follow the paths wherever they might lead. This story touched me and I really enjoyed the humor that was sprinkled throughout.

This is an angsty romance involving two stubborn individuals. It also touches on subjects which reinforce the reality that life isn't always fair, humanity can be very cruel and those who are affected by the cruelty need a voice and a champion. This story was powerful and one I will not forget!

My heart just broke for Alex Winters, as life had truly sucker punched him right in the gut. Because of circumstances, he finds himself living in a new town all the way across the country, needing a fresh start. He is immediately judged and looked upon as a "weirdo-loner" and an unsavory character, who is unwelcome and the talk of the town. The only one Alex can trust is his 80 pound ball of fur, his best friend, his beloved dog, Stan. That is until he meets Dawn, who is also no stranger to gossip.

Dr. Dawn Andrews, is a veterinarian and divorced, single mother of an eight year old girl named, Katie, who is adorable and then some. Once they meet and really get to know Alex, a deep friendship is forged, although Dawn finds herself wanting much more. She is undeniably attracted to the mysterious man, but when the hidden layers of what makes Alex tick are peeled back and exposed, questions mount and heartache ensues.

I am also the biggest dog lover you will ever meet and totally adored Stan and the role he played!

one careful owner photo One Careful Owner_zpstow2pxz8.jpg

I loved The Traveling Man by Jane Harvey Berrick and I love animals, dogs in particular so when I got her newsletter writing about One Careful Owner I just “one clicked” immediately.

My thoughts now?

This book is not perfect or smooth all along but it has feelings in spades. The story is bumpy and rocky with parts that could maybe have been better in my biased opinion (some cliché but hot first scenes ) and other moments that were so beautiful and heartbreaking it more than made up for it. I cried and cried… for the man and for the dogs. So if you need a good cry you should seriously consider reading this book.

Above all else I loved how the main male character was flawed and unconventional.

I’m a real sucker for damaged (but hot!) heroes. You know the misfits or those battered by life and left on the side of the road all alone.

Well Alex is scarred and broken. The first time Dawn spotted him his appearance was so forbidding he sported the “serial killer in the woods weird” look: long hair, unkempt beard, old clothes, grunting and carrying an ax. . He’s got his share of misery and problems in the past and is suffering from a speech impediment. People are rebuked by his aspect. Truth be told he is vulnerable and lonely.

“It took him three tries to aspirate the word, and a sudden ache twisted my heart. My new client wasn’t rude—he had a speech impediment. A severe one. My heart softened as I stared at this rough-looking man. Then his gaze dropped to the floor, unable to meet my eyes. But before he looked away, I saw pain and frustration as well as humiliation. Was it always so hard for him, or was it me? No wonder he hid behind his long hair and straggly beard. How lonely that must be.”

Alex can also suffer from mood swings and he could be unstable to some extent. He is like some kind of time bomb ready to explode given the right trigger. Many times in the book he went from caring to frustrated and angered just to be sad right after. Alex was unpredictable but he also was the sweetest man with animals and kids. He broke my heart so many times! I wanted Dawn to go for him. I wanted him to be happy…

I HATED when he was rejected by others. Alex reminded me of Archer and Ehd to some extent. Lonely, vulnerable, flawed but such a beautiful soul.

Of course with such mood swings and past he did not seem to be a good idea for a single mom trying to do her best to raise and protect her eight year old daughter. But Dawn couldn’t ignore how he took care of his dog Stan and saving every injured animal. A dog and animal lover can’t be a bad person, right?

Dawn’s heart and brain were at war. She wanted to make the good choice for her daughter. Her brain told her to be sensible. But her heart thought Alex was worth taking a chance. What should she choose?

“That’s the thing about being sensible, responsible—it assumes that emotions should lose out to rationality. But is that the right thing to do? Who ruled that emotions are less important? Who said that reason weighed heavier in the evidence? Since when is the head mightier than the heart? Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds.”

Now be warned there is back and forth between these characters. I was conflicted as I loved Alex so much and wanted to shake some sense in Dawn but being a mom I could also understand her reluctance.

I also loved Stan’s intake. Yes we got the dog’s point of view in this story and I had some smile or good lough reading about the “dog”s thoughts. Among other pearls: “I sat outside, enjoying the sun on my fur, and the scent of the rich dirt. I licked my balls thoughtfully. I was very proud of my balls—they were large and shiny and swayed pendulously when I walked, a punctuation mark against my sandy fur. I paused to stare up at the boss, my chocolate eyes sympathetic. Maybe if he could lick his own balls, he’d be happier.”

We’re also reminded of some important things in life.

-The first one: don’t judge a book by its cover. Dawn’s first impression of Alex branded him as a vagrant and trespasser. She was not alone in her belief and Alex went through some humiliating moments because he looked different. I just was ashamed for this police officer but also revolted by the way authorities can treat someone unconventional. I swore not to be judgemental.
“Then Mr. Winters started typing again. CAN WE GO HOME? Any thoughts of laughter drained away. He sat in the chair, his shoulders slumped, his left hand rhythmically stroking Stan’s head. He was seeking comfort from the one creature who truly understood him. Tears stung my eyes. We must have all seemed so callous to him, vindictive even, accusing him of trying to hurt a little girl when all he’d wanted to do was save those tiny kittens.”;

-Second: you can make mistakes, you can be so low as to nearly self-destruct but everyone deserves a second chance. We’re human hence we’re meant to make mistakes.

-Third; you have to forgive. Yourself and others. If you don’t you’ll be miserable. There is freedom in forgiveness, be it for what you did in the past or a sibling that hurt you.

So would I recommend this book? In a heartbeat! If you loved Archer by Mia Sheridan, Transcendence by Shay Savage, Waiting for Wyatt by SD Hendrickson or Torn by Carian Cole I think you’ll love this one, flaws and all.

Now just for fun, my very own (less imposing) Stan

Spoilers...

Dawn (veterinarian) - Heroine
Alex (architect) - Hero
Stella - Heroine's sister

This is the first book I bought in 2017 and I am very disappointed. Reading is subjective so your opinion about the characters and their actions may be different from mine.

First, I love these type of stories. I love reclusive heroes!! They are my favorite!!! Second, the writing was not the problem for me, the characters' actions were the problem. Third, I have loved other books by this author, but this one that if I read first, I would never have read another book by her again.

Alex was a wishy washy hero. He was too quick to give up on Dawn. I felt Alex was more comfortable with Stella, Dawn's sister, than he was with Dawn. When Alex's ex-wife confronted Dawn and told her that Alex and she were still married, Dawn stopped all communication with Alex and I completely understood! Alex knew that his ex said something to Dawn that upset her, but instead of trying to find out what upset Dawn he just let it go. Then later Dawn goes to Alex's house early in the morning and finds Stella in Alex's t-shirt. It looked to Dawn as if Alex and Stella had sex, but instead of running after Dawn and explaining the situation, he lets her go. (Side note: Alex and Stella were kissing and he had her panties down her knees or ankles. I honestly had to skim that part, I was so disgusted.) Anyway, Alex had Stella explain it to Dawn days later that nothing happened. (LIARS!!!!) Alex rarely (I don't he ever) stuttered with Stella. Alex cooked and talked to Stella every night when he and Dawn were separated. A good portion of the second half of the book was Alex talking about his time with Stella. Stella this and Stella that...

Side note: There is some history with Stella and Dawn's ex-husband so I understood Dawn's insecurities.

SOME of Alex's inner thoughts that bothered me. There were many.

"Only Stella's company kept me teetering on the edge without going over." (Loc 3328)
"I'd just driven from the grocery store with ingredients to make risotto for Stella." (Loc 3134)
"Please don't say your're sorry! Dawn, I promise, there's nothing going on between me and your sister. But she's been a good friend to me. I'm not going to cut her out of my life now that you and I are..."(Loc 3499)

Stella mentioned some jealousy about Dawn's relationship with Alex, even though she added that she was happy for Dawn. (loc 4185) BUT I think Stella is a liar and in reality, if there was an opportunity, Stella would take Alex away from Dawn.

Alex wanted to have his cake an eat it too regarding his relationships with Dawn and Stella.

Alex was wishy washy. I understand that his stuttering prevented him from expressing how he felt sometimes, but that whole "relationship" he had with the heroine's sister bothered me and I could not reconnect with Alex and Dawn. Their reunion felt weak. I did not buy their love.

I loved Stan. (We get the dog's POV too.) I loved that Dawn was a vet. I just had issues with the interactions/friendships in this story.

This may work for you, but it did not work for me.

Heartbreaking and beautiful. Two words to describe this story...

Alex lost everything ... his family, his wife, his best friend and his company. Together with his dog Stan he starts a new life which isn't easy when your past hurt you badly and caused you to have a stutter. He tries to avoid human contact and is satisfied with his life with Stan even if he is lonely. When Stan needs a vet he is immediately captivated by Dawn. Dawn has a sweet little 8-year old daughter Katie. The father of her daughter was the cause of a fight with her sister. She doesn't trust easily anymore since she has Katie to think about. But slowly Alex finds his way into her heart.

I loved the beautiful story and even though I never thought I would enjoy it, I did enjoy the small parts with the POV of Stan. Just wonderful! And what a lovely girl Katie was. She didn't only steal Alex's heart but also mine.

This was my first book by Jane Harvey-Berrick but I'm looking forward to read more from this author. I already bought Slave to the Rhythm ...

A book with a dog; come on- that cover alone got me hooked. I ADORED the first 80% of this book. It was wonderfully written, had so much heart and gut twists. The last 20%, not so much. After everything Alex had been through, I didn't quite understand the need for him to put not just himself, but Dawn and Katie in such high risk. The author had a very important message to pass on but i wish it was done a little differently.

Dawn, a single-mum and vet meets broody and recluse Alex Winters while treating his dog, Stan. What starts off as an intense attraction becomes an all-consuming relationship and Dawn realises nothing is as it seems. I loved Alex and his relationship with his dog. I loved how sweet and open he became with both Dawn and Katie. I appreciated her kindness, and as a mum, her hesitance. I would have been as careful as she was. A lot of push and pull from the heroine but i could not fault her as Alex seemed to keep many secrets.

If you enjoyed Archer's Voice and Waiting for Wyatt, you will love this book. I felt this book had its' moments, however, i finished it wishing it could have been better.
Overall, a worth your time read and a definite recommendation.

This author has such a unique voice, and I have enjoyed most of her stories. This one is a rare exception. The negative outweighed the positive by a lot here.

*There will be slight spoilers in this review*

Alex looks like a wild mountain man, with long unkempt hair, a full bushy beard and filthy clothes. He has a severe stutter and his best friend is his dog, Stan.

Stan the dog actually has his own couple chapters in this story. At first that seems odd, but knowing that Alex has trouble speaking, it works.

Dawn is a vet in town, and a single mother. She meets Alex early on when he brings Stan into the vet office because his teeth are bothering him. She notices quickly how uncomfortable Alex is around her, but her quiet confidence and gentle care of Stan, Alex slowly begins to open up.

I loved those moments when Alex meets Dawn’s daughter, and he doesn’t stutter with her! I loved them flirting, I loved the possibly of love for them both.

There are a few odd plot lines throughout, that added nothing to the story but drama. (illegal dogfighting and the ex-wife drama lama) The animal abuse is REALLY hard to read about.

The thing that pushed me over the edge was that Alex almost had sex with Stella, Dawn's sister. Admitting later in the book that he would've gone through with it had she let him. (Like sucking tongues, ripping your panties off kind of foreplay) And the two of them kept the secret from Dawn, never telling her the truth about that moment.

It felt like Alex's relationship with Stella was better than his relationship with Dawn. Later in the book he spends every single evening with Stella. I understand they have alcoholism in common, but that is why there are AA groups and sponsors!!

It isn’t the just that he spends time at his home with Stella, it’s that Stella and her sister had a love triangle previously and it destroyed their relationship. AND HE KNOWS THIS, so why does he continue to allow Stella to spend evenings at his home, laughing, watching tv together and chatting about life. What am I missing here?

Dawn deserved so much better.

Check the TW because this one has some heavy ones: Alcoholism, cheating, severe animal abuse, multiple animal deaths.

**ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review**

description

After reading a couple of dark and twisted romance novels I was in the mood for something lighter, and One Careful Owner fit the criteria. I was hooked from the beginning and I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to these intriguing characters. Especially Alex, because he was such a complex and mysterious person and I wanted to know what happened to him. I fell in love with his dog Stan, and I loved that we got a few short chapters told from his POV. I think more authors should have a chapter or two in their book be told by a pet.

Dawn is a very strong and independent woman, who always puts her daughter first. I totally understood her hesitation towards Alex, because she didn't know much about him. I loved Dawn's daughter Katie so much, she was honest and so sweet. I loved her interactions with Stand and Alex the most. Alex has been through so much and it is very difficult for him to hold on to the good things. Dawn and Katie gave him a new home. This book had a few very heartbreaking scenes that had me crying my eyes out. The secondary characters were very interesting, I especially was fascinated by Stella (Dawn's sister). I wouldn't mind her getting her own book.

One Careful Owner is a contemporary romance with a couple of emotional scenes. I love Jane's writing and she did a great job with this book as well. Dogs played an important part in this book and as an animal lover I was really happy about that. The main reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was because of the ending. In my opinion it was rushed. For me the story wasn't over yet, Alex and Dawn had still things to figure out and they needed to grow more as a couple.

1 Not What I Thought Stars.

I was disappointed with this book. I thought the blurb sounded interesting and had it been about Alex, his dog Stan, Dawn and her daughter Katie, then I think it would have been a 3-4 star read.
So, why only 1? There was a clear reason for it and her name is Stella. She is Dawn's older sister. Their relationship is strained because of an incident in the past and the two women, we are often reminded , are total opposites.

Honestly? I thought Alex should have been with Stella. They had way more chemistry than him and Dawn. I hated that he admitted to Stella that he nearly "f****d" her on the deck at his house. She thinks that's "hot". Neither of them are honest with Dawn about that, not really. I never once really got the connection between Alex and Dawn. It just didn't work for me.

Clearly , lots of people love this book and this is just my opinion. I did adore Stan and loved his POV. It is very sad in places and some scenes showing animal abuse are tough to read.

Sorry, this just wasn't my kind of H/h.

When Alex Winter's moves into an old cabin on the outskirts of a small town, he finds himself the subject of gossip mongers. Nobody knows who he is or why he is there. He wanders into the main town area on occasion with his big dog, Stan, trailing behind him - his constant companion. He is unkempt looking with wrinkled clothes, a very long beard and hair that could do with some TLC. He very rarely speaks to anyone. He is a mystery that people are curious about.

'People fear what they don’t know. Clouded by judgement of how he looks.'

Dawn is a vet down at the local veterinary clinic, she is pretty much raising her young daughter on her own, although the father is still in a picture now and then. Her sister also lives in the same town but after a big falling out a few years ago, their relationship is somewhat strained.

Dawn is covering a shift at work one afternoon when Alex brings Stan into the clinic. He seems quite anxious around her and it is very obvious how attached he is to his dog. Dawn can see how uncomfortable he is and does what she can to easy his anxiety about being there.

‘Courage isn’t always in the grand gestures but for a man like him, it was simply walking out of his own front door.’

Dawn seems to cross paths several more times with Alex and a sometimes she has her daughter Katie with her. Katie immediately loves Stand the dog and quickly befriends Alex as well. I love the innocence and openness of children, they don't have preconceived notions of people based on how they look and Alex reveals more of his sweet character and disposition when he is around her.

As the friendship between them grows, there are people who seem to think they need to give advice or intervene. How could Dawn want to associate with a man like Alex? Yes, there are reasons why Alex moved to this small town. His life was completely turned upside down when everything he knew and loved was ripped away from him. The only thing he had left was Stan. I guess you could say he is running away from his problems. Dawn and Katie seemed to have anchored him, giving him a sense of peace and happiness that he has been missing for a while now.

‘If felt good, it felt right. What was happening to me, to my life? It was cracking open and Dawn was the light blasting through to all my darkest places, it was terrifying.’

You know what happens when you are running away from problems though, they always catch up to you right? Alex is worried that Dawn won't want to be around him when he reveals his past and present to her. Dawn has two people to think about when it comes to any big decisions in her life, her daughter comes first always. Is Alex worth taking a risk on?

This book has been on my radar for a while now and when the opportunity to listen to and review the audio book came up I was all over it. I knew very little about the story, apart from knowing that a dog has his own POV - which I thought was a great idea! Now that I have listened to this I strongly encourage anyone who has read the book to listen to this version as it will give you a different reading experience and will give you an enriched understanding of Alex's struggles.

'The town had decided that he was 'strange', 'a recluse' or even creepy. I wondered if anyone else had sensed his loneliness and isolation behind that forbidding appearance.'

Gosh, this is such a hard book to review and even rate. There were parts we loved but equally so many parts we just couldn't connect to or even come to grips with. For us, in some respects, it was not at all what we were expecting, there was almost too much going on and we failed to believe in the connection between Dawn and Alex. We will say though that Jane Harvey-Berrick had a fantastic premise in this story, and we fell in love with Stan, the dog. Having his POV cracked us up and made our hearts all warm and fuzzy- so very unique and provided a much needed relief in a heavy and angsty story-line.

'Whichever way I looked at it, the boss and the doc were definitely having some serious eye contact. And that could only be a good thing. I hoped. Unless she broke his heart like that other bitch. In which case, she could kiss my hairy ass.'

We were up and down throughout, enjoying getting to know the characters and becoming intrigued then to feel frustrated and sad when we still couldn't connect with Alex and Dawn. We definitely enjoyed the first half of this book more.

"I can't fix everything I've done wrong, but I'm going to try."

We loved Stella, Dawn's sister, at the end after she'd redeemed herself and actually at times wished she would end up with Alex as they had a seamless, trusting and banter full friendship. He seemed so much lighter with her. For various reasons we just didn't understand Dawn as a person, and we didn't feel the reasons for why Alex and her fell for each other. In some respects we were told rather than given the chance to experience these characters.

'It all seemed so pointless. Why try so hard, when failure hurt so badly? Why bother to dream, when it all turned to nightmares?'

We have to admit to skimming a part of this book because we just CANNOT read about animal cruelty. If we'd known this book was so graphic in it's description of dog fighting perhaps we could've been better prepared. We felt so sick and upset. Yes this is real life and people need to be aware that this is a sad and tragic reality, however, we were not expecting it in a fictional romance. For us, it broke us.

So, we have to be honest and admit that sadly we just didn't enjoy this story enough to love it. It breaks our hearts because we love this Author and previous books by her.

Wow. Just wow.

I'm a total wimp when it comes to books with sadness warnings; my go-to reaction is to wimp out and avoid them altogether. But this is my fave author so I trusted her. She didn't let me down.

Yes, I sobbed in an ugly, snotty way, but mostly I revelled in the feels I got from this slow burn romance between a man who's given up on people and relies on his old dog for companionship and loyalty and a woman who's a devoted, struggling single mum and a vet.

The vibes I got from this reminded me of Archer's Voice and The Vixen and the Vet so if you loved them then this will suit you.

I cannot lie, I wasn't quite prepared for the dog's pov, but I rolled with it because I could see it was necessary for the dog to have a voice when his human didn't. I also struggled with the cruelty, even though I know it happens, I just couldn't read about it. Told you I am a wimp.

Beautiful, poignant and uplifting, it's a bit sad in places but it has all of the feels. Standalone, complete story. Recommended.

**Thanks to the author for the arc**

As a huge animal lover and enthusiastic reader of second chance at love stories I couldn't wait to get my grabby hands on this book. I absolutely adore Jane and her work. She is one of my most favorite authors and every new book of hers is an automatic one-click for me. One Careful Owner was beautiful, touching and heart-warming. This amazing book owned me from the very beginning till the last page. I was literally glued to my kindle because I simply couldn't put it down. I've shed lots of tears while reading this story but each and every one of them was so worth it!

Alex Winters has been fucked over by life too many times to count. The world has taken so much from him already. The only great constant in his life is his old dog Stan - his best friend and companion. Alex needed a fresh start and therefore moved to a small town in Pennsylvania. He is living a secluded and lonely life in a cabin isolating himself from other people. Alex got burned before and therefore doesn't trust easily. Especially not women. Until he makes the acquaintance of a smart and caring veterinarian - Dawn Andrews. She not only shows kindness to his beloved dog Stan but also to him - a stranger who everyone else rather avoids. Dawn is a single mother with a non-existent love life. Her sweet, bubbly 8 year old daughter Katie always comes first. What initially starts as an act of kindness will lead to friendship and eventually love. Dawn wants to trust Alex but finds it incredibly difficult to do so since he doesn't like to talk about his hurtful past. Both are hiding things from each other which could possibly cost them the best thing that ever happend to them ...

This book was so much more than just a story about two broken people finding love and happiness again. It's also about how animals can bring so much purpose and joy to our lives. They can be our best friends who will always love us genuinely and unconditionally. Stan saved Alex - he was there for him when he reached rock bottom. The strong affection between dog and owner was something that made this book so outstanding for me. Jane has portrayed their special bond in such a wonderful and authentic way.

I adored Alex. He is a beautifully flawed character whom you can't but love for every aspect of his personality. This man's kind heart towards animals knew no boundaries. His interaction with Katie was so endearing. Alex was more than ready to shower Dawn's little daughter with love and affection. Something she never experienced by her own father. The way Alex showed Dawn and Katie how much he cared about them and that he wanted to be a permanent fixture in their lives made my heart melt like ice cream.

Jane Harvey-Berrick has once again proven that she is an amazingly talented author who always comes up with new and fresh ideas to write about. I loved that she told some parts of this story from Stan's POV. She gave Alex's lovely dog his own voice and the opportunity to express his thoughts and feelings.

I recommend this must-read to everyone from the bottom of my heart and give this favorite of mine 5 well deserved stars.

St. Rocco the patron saint of animals and misfits.

This could easily have been a five star read but then it went down to a two star read but at some point it went back up to a four star read. So after three days of mulling it over I’ve decided to give it three stars.

JHB is a fantastic author. She knows how to pull on your heart strings without a lot of effort. Makes you think about things you don’t want to think about and makes you feel things you don’t want to feel.

The Hero of the book has a speech impediment which started as a child. It started to get better until another tragic event shook his world. His wife with his best friend and the loss of his brother. I only ever realised that he could then rely on his dog Stan. I loved the tortured Hero with a disability.

Eighteen months later our Hero has become a recluse, a hermit but a lover of animals. A bearded mountain man. I felt his pain, his hurt and his love for his dog. He is the town crazy. But define normal.

Our heroine was at some point the talk of the town and well what both her and her sister Stella went through was truly horrible. But Dawn did gain one thing out of this her daughter Katie. Living in a small community does have its benefits but also a lot of gossip goes around as well.

Dawn is a vet and her next appointment is with the town crazy. There is something about Alex that Dawn can’t get out of her head and vice versa. A man of very few words doesn’t make him any less appealing.

IMO there was just too much going on in this book. But in a way it also worked, well most of the time. Emotionally I felt like a yoyo.

There is angst, hope, despair and heart-breaking moments. A dog is a man’s best friend. But there were happy moments where you think that they will make it.

The relationship between the Hero and heroine never felt forced in any way. Even though they had a lot of differences to work through and as a fantastic mum Dawn always put her daughter first.
JHB also takes a difficult topic of addiction is tasteful in its description but doesn’t gloss it all over.
Told in various POV of the Hero, Heroine, Stan & the daughter. All are very entertaining especially from Stan’s POV is hilarious.

I sat outside, enjoying the sun on my fur, and the scent of the rich dirt. I licked my balls thoughtfully. I was very proud of my balls- they were large and shiny and swayed pendulously when I walked, a punctuation mark against my sandy fur. I paused to stare up at the boss, my chocolate eyes sympathetic. Maybe if he could lick his own balls, he’d be happier.

My one main issue is that if I had known that there is cruelty to animals in this book with illegal dog fighting rings then I probably wouldn’t have read it. But on the other side I think it is important to make us aware of the facts that some people are despicable humans in the world.
JHB is also a hit and miss author for me but I loved the blurb and took the plunge even if it hadn’t of worked out well.

I'm so torn on this one. Review to come.

If you are an animal lover, get ready a box of Kleenex. A box!

Is been a long time since I had a good cry over a book. This book is seriously heartbreaking and is not because of the romance. The romance was good and funny and heartfelt at times, but not sad. The sad part is about the animals, especially the dogs or specifically old Stan. I'm a softie who couldn't read about dogs, whether is happy or sad without shedding tears.

Dawn is the small town veterinarian and a single mom. Her 8 year old, Katie is a such an animated and bubbly character who constantly embarrassed her in public or specifically in front of her potential beau.

Alex Winters had been let down by too many people - his family, his wife, his best friend. Now he rather hole up in a secluded cabin in a small town with his loyal dog, Stan and having problem in communicating with strangers meant he avoided people in general. Until he keep meeting Stan's vet, Dawn and he couldn't help but being drawn to the kind doctor who didn't judge him for his appearance and anti-social behavior.

When Dawn first met Alex, she was scared by his appearance and then wary about his behavior and the town gossips doesn't ease her opinion of him. But after seeing him caring for his dog and rescuing wild animals she started to think he might be a good man at heart. And when her daughter, Katie was totally smitten by Alex and Stan and befriended them, Dawn was a goner. If one manage to win over her daughter, he can easily win over the mom.

Alex is not an easy character to love, but Dawn is willing to take a chance and try to love him. He is such a lonely man that he used to only talk to his dog, but now with Dawn and Katie in the picture, Alex might just find a reason to smile again. I'm such a sap when it comes to these vulnerable hero.

But what Dawn didn't expect is to find out Alex is full of hidden secret and past that might not bode well with her mother hen nature. Is not something super bad in terms of fiction, but I can understand from a mother's perspective that anything less than normal or perfect might just trigger a mother's protective nature. Alex might had his flawed, but he is a good man with the best intention at heart. His crusade is admirable, albeit dangerous. I'm just glad they manage to get past it and find a common ground.

In the end, despite some sad moments in the story and some parts that I rather not relive, I'm happy and relief to see Alex finally found a family of his own again.

A sweet but emotional journey for a single mother, and a man looking for a second chance at life.
This story tackles a number of weighty subjects:
Violence towards animals
Alcoholism
Cheating
Single parenting

With the cover of this book and the way it kicked off, I expected more sweet than emotional. Alex, and his dog Stan, meet Dawn for the first time, officially, when he brings in Stan to her veterinarian office, Petz Pets. Things don't hit off from the get-go, but Dawn's patient and profession demeanor leaves the door open for possibilities.

Initially, I wasn't sure what to think of Alex. As a reader, we know some of what he has been through prior to relocating to the small town in PA. But he is more closed off and unwelcoming to anyone and everyone. Ok, maybe not Stan, whom he loves to the core, but everyone else. On top of his behavior, his stuttering around others makes him not open to talk. So he's a hard nut to crack. However, Dawn finds a way to get him to slowly open up as he continually brings new animals to her place that have been injured.

Side note: one of my favorite parts of the story is getting Stan's POV. It was sweet, funny and honest. Plus, it showed how much he loved his owner, aka "his boss".

The relationship between Alex and Dawn was gradual, but never really takes off to a steady one due to a multitude of issues. (See my first paragraph). At times, I wasn't sure if they ever would get on the same page, and even considered Stella, Dawn's sister, a better fit at times. <= I'm shocking myself just typing that because initially reading this book, this will not be your first thought.

The bulk of this story seemed to be Alex trying to prove himself.
Prove to himself that he can survive alone.
Prove to Dawn he's a good person.
Prove to her that he will be there for her and more importantly, her daughter, Katie.
Prove that he can do the right thing to save others (trying to be vague here without spoilers).

The ongoing animal injuries added an interesting layer to the story. Not only do they have a history in how Stan became his dog, but they have a history with Alex and his recent major breakdown. Added to that history is the mystery of who is harming the animals around his place and why, and the direction Alex wants his life to lead when tragedy strikes again. I think I figured out the mystery injuried mid-way, but wasn't sure where the story was heading with regards to the Cleveland issue (again, trying to be vague). However, I can tell you that although it was hard to read some of the parts, I loved the direction the story led and the overall outcome.

Alex more than proves himself along the way. Then it all rest on Dawn to decide her/there future. And I'll leave it at that.

Once again, this author delivers an emotionally complex and compelling story. She never lets me down.

There are books that are simply great reads, but there are also those that are so much more. Books that are not only an escape, but true gems of epic proportions that consume you and touch you deeply, leaving a permanent mark on your heart. This is what One Careful Owner was for me. I have read the warning that this book will break my heart - and it trully did. There were times when I cried so hard I couldn't see the words on my kindle through all the tears. I felt despair, utmost devastation, but also hope and joy. Only a few authors are able to make me feel so much and Jane Harvey-Berrick is one of them. Her writing is pure magic! I was lost in this book for hours, anxiously turning the pages to see how the story continues. I never wanted it to end.

Betrayed by the people he loved and trusted most, Alex Winters has left his past behind to live in an old cabin in the woods together with his dog and only true friend Stan. Disappointed in people, he doesn't expect kindness from anyone anymore. But this will suddenly change the moment he meets her: Dawn, a vet and single mother of an eight-year old daughter.

There is a dark, mysterious side to Alex making the locals calling him crazy and gossiping behind his back. Dawn will soon realize that she misjudged him and that the love for animals is not the only similarity they share. Is Alex really bad news or just different and misunderstood? Dawn won't be the only one to discover that behind the shaggy hair and beard there is a handsome young man hiding with the most beautiful heart...

Alex was such a swoon-worthy hero. He was compassionate, loyal and kind-harted. He had a few flaws like all of us but that only made him more human to me. His love and friendship to Stan, was so strong and pure - it brought me to tears! The way he adored Dawn and her daughter was beautiful beyond words!

I loved and admired Dawn from the start. She is a remarkable, smart and hardworking woman. She is a vet with passion and a loving mother to her sassy and sweet daughter Katie. Dawn has some trust issues because she made some bad choices in the past. This is why she is trying to protect her's and her daughter's heart. But she is defenseless against Alex and the feelings he awakes in her.

One Careful Owner is a sexy, heart-breaking and soul-stirring story about a man and his dog as well as second chances at love and happiness. As much as Jane broke my heart into thousand pieces with this book, she slowly putted it back together piece by piece, leaving me in a happy place. I loved and devoured each and every word and recommend it from the bottom of my heart! Fantastic job dear Jane.

5 huge, amazing stars!!!

Jane’s books are always special for me. Her honest writing and adorable characters get me every time. When I saw the cover for her new book „One careful owner“, I honestly doubted if I wanted to read it at all. By looking at the cover and the blurb only, I would have guessed that this is a cookie cutter romance and this is not my cuppa at all. I need angsty, forbidden, gritty, dark or even heartbreaking. But ultimately just MORE. But I once again got taught a lesson by dear Jane: Never judge a book by it’s cover, literally. This story was so much MORE of what I expected and Jane has just proven to me once again why she is in the top 5 list of my favorite authors ever. „One careful owner“ made for a good ending of a medicore book-year for me and I’m so thankful for it.

The blurb doesn’t even scratch on the surface of what to expect in „One careful owner“. We get a story that is as deep as the ocean in it’s emotional aspect and as rare as a falling star in it’s uniqueness. What literally blew my mind was that she not only managed to write the POV’s of the main characters but also gave voice to a very special, brave and highly important soul in this book. In all of the years, the many books I read, I only once stumbled upon something like this and granted, Jane Harvey-Berrick did a much better job. Whereas I normallly try to avoid comparisons, I feel the urge to do it here. Ever since I read „Archer’s Voice“ by Mia Sheridan a while ago, I was in love with the beautifully written, heartstealingly unique book. Not that the plot of one can be comparedd to the other but Jane really managed to give me the same feeling as when I read Archer’s story – a feeling of completion, a surety that I just found a real treasure that touched my soul. Not many books can do that for me! So, I bow down to you Jane. You have my highest respect.

Of course there is this one important message in the book again, Jane always combines her romance with real issues. Well, there are even more than one issue here and a quite a few hidden messages but that just makes the story all the more precious.

All in all, I rate „One careful owner“ with 5 stars and can recommend it to everyone!

Jane, thank you for making me cry and for showing me once again why I adore you and your books so much

The characters - definitely a 5. The writing, a 5. The storyline itself, well this is a "it's not you, it's me" kind of thing. I have a hard time reading about any type of animal cruelty, or animals dying, and this has both, so it was hard to take at times. That's not to say the book wasn't great, because it was. I absolutely adored silent, mysterious Alex. That is totally my kinda hero!!! There were chapters written from the point of view of the dog (squeeee). And the little girl was precious! Dawn, our heroine, was very likeable as well, but the assumptions she made drove me a little batty. All in all, a very good read!

SMH. For 85% of this book I was loving it and then the last 15% ruined it.

2.5 stars

On the day Alex loses his brother to an IED in Afghanistan he comes home to find his wife and best friends, who both are his business partners, in bed together. From there his life falls apart, all except his brother's dog. Stan (who has a whimsical POV at times in story) Stan is the only one he can talk too, an anxiety caused stutter makes him a self made mute.

In a new town, he meets Dawn, a vet, when Stan becomes ill. Soon he meets the daughter who falls for him AND talks to him. Slowly He & Dawn grow closer but there are secrets and events that happen to threaten their budding friendship/romance. A rash of injured animals, cops asking questions, days of unknown disappearances.

I really liked it to this point than the injured animals, the cops, the disappearances has such abrupt or non thought out endings it made the book basically un-ended in my opinion. It would be like Jaws and they get on the boat and then the Sheriff and Hooper come back and no one says what happened to the shark or where Quint is.

I am not sure how I feel about this book. The hero was lacking in my opinion. I love the silent broody type but Alex was weak. He didn't fight for his love, Dawn.

And don't get me started on the sister. He seemed way to friendly with her.

Let’s talk about expectations…

When you hear that an author who’s previous books you liked - and I mean REALLY liked - releases a new book – what are your thoughts or feelings about it?

Well – I can not judge what you all think but I can tell you that I get giddy with excitement. And in the same moment I get scared when I notice that excitement. Will this new book make me feel the way the previous ones did?

Will I like it AT ALL?

I think in a way those feelings are similar to the ones that an author must be feeling when he releases his new baby to the world. And the more books you read and liked of a certain author the higher this expectation grows – you can not prevent that feeling, no matter what you try to tell yourself deep inside you hope that this next book will make you feel the same way the others did.

I accepted a long time ago for myself that I usually always will have one book that I love most and even though I rate several of the same author with an equal amount of stars this one book will always be the dearest to me.

Thinking of Jane Harvey-Berrick this book seems to be “Dangerous to Know & Love”. You might wonder why I say “seems to be” yeah well – it looks that there really might be possibilities for that to change in the future.

Only a few days ago I might have said NO WAY but now ?

NOW I read “One Careful Owner” and I there wasn’t much missing and this book would have been in the same prime position as my all time favorite “Dangerous to Know & Love”. It is hard to tell you anything about this book without giving away stuff and throw around spoilers.

Maybe feelings are the right way to talk about it. I need to feel – like in laugh, cry or get angry to give a book 5 stars. So When I read “Dangerous” I cried and it received 5 stars… - but when I cried during reading “Careful” I was about to rip a star out of that rating – but the anger I felt towards the plot development as well as the devastation – were again the reason to leave the star where it was. (cryptic much – yeah I know – sorry)

I expected what happened but I can not say I liked it – that would be a lie. But I should have known that this author is not scared of using all the tools available to draw emotions out of me. I love a special kind of leading characters, those characters all have certain – lets say loosely “flaws” (I mean something different but again cryptic much) so Alex kind of hit that nerve very hard.

But I must admit it was STAN that stole my heart. Not quoting, but just from my memory – (and this is not a spoiler I hop). Stan thought something like “My boss is sad… maybe he should lick his balls … I am always happy when I do that”! It was that moment when I could not stop laughing… it was simply hilarious with all the surrounding plot that was far from funny it was STAN.

And then there was Dawns daughter. When I think about it, actually she moved me more than her mother did. She had such a strong presence, with Stan and with Alex. This way that only children have or very special adults can maintain. This way of seeing further than the surface of things. This way of not assuming but simply being present. Its one of those things that gets lost when growing up, because assumptions and public opinions become more important. Yeah thinking about it – we could learn from children. Some questions that children ask seem embarrassing to us in public – but we should question our reaction sometimes on the reasons for that (loosing focus sorry)

Anyway – “One Careful Owner” should not only be read because it is a wonderful plot. No it should also be understood as a lesson not to judge books by their cover or people by their surface and also to trust your own guts / intuition more than the assumptions of other people.

So yes – Dear author – you came near – very near to change my favorite book in “your shelf” but not quite – there was just one thing that “ruined” that – but I know its like “Dancing in the rain” it could not be helped – but I still do not have to like it right ?

But I can promise you create another Lead like Daniel and you will get one of my 5 Hot Read spots on our BlogPage in that year, Alex was close VERY close…

(If anybody needs more information’s on my cryptic comments I answer PM’s I just want to avoid spoilers here – oh and in case you haven’t read “Dangerous” – DON’T read any comments or reviews you might find out things that you’d better experience while reading the book)

Another strong, beautifully executed love story by Jane Harvey-Berrick.

Even though this wasn't my favourite book of hers, I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamics of Alex and Dawn's story. It wasn't rushed or even portrayed as being an easy, all consuming love story but one that teetered precariously with unsurety and caution.

The allure of an outsider hiding within the shadows calls to our heroine as she sees the best in what the gossiping small town locals regard as a strange lost cause.

Dawn is a vet and a single mother who is trying to make the best of a rather difficult situation. Estranged from her sister due to a past indiscretion which resulted in her daughter, Katie, Dawn has been the focus of local gossip more than she can count, so when a stranger enters the town and is shunned by the locals, she can't help but be intrigued.

Alex is a recluse. Renovating an old log cabin in the woods, with only his best canine friend Stan for company, his severe stutter keeps others at a distance as his level of communication with strangers proves difficult.

When Stan requires a vet, Alex has no choice but to go into town and get him some help which is where our story starts as two guarded characters find a friendship and connection in one another.

There were times when I wanted Dawn to open up a little more and take a chance, but her guarded persona was justified in her circumstances. I did find it a little difficult to connect with her at times, she was all very normal.

I liked Alex, he had a dark air about him and it was fascinating to see him starting to fight that darkness and come out of his shell.

Katie was adorable and her energy gave good balance to the story. Her innocence and honesty was a breath of fresh air.

Stan is the man! I loved that mutt. He was a fundamental part of the story and even had his own voice in a chapter or two. It was fitting to the backdrop of the darker twist towards the end of the book and I commend Jane on touching on a despicable and upsetting subject. It was hard to read but I will never dismiss a raise of awareness. Very brave.

4 Crowns.
