Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Bought at a second hand charity shop and still, after reading through it, find myself thinking that, other than the charity, the money was wasted on this.
I can understand that a lot of the collected stories are old ones and suffer from the extreme linearity of said old stories...except the ones collected of a more recent date are as boring as the older ones.
There are Doctor Strange stories with more content out there, just not in this.
Despite the meh last story of the collection, Marvel Platinum: The Definitive Doctor Strange is pure brilliance. From magic Nazis worshipping Dormammu to escapes via singularity to a desperate knucklebone showdown on New York rooftops, the stories collected draw a portrait of a strong, lonely man, Stephen Strange. It is deeply human, as well as trippy as hell.
To be honest I’m not really interested in anything other than the 60’s & 70’s stuff in this collection. Having said that, great artwork aside, the writing is so dated and clunky that reading them again was a bit of a drag. Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.
2.5 its a cool book too have for marvel fans but the stories aren't really that good. But hey Doctor Strange is one of my favorite marvel characters so its an ok comic.
Entertaining and gives a peek at the many different styles of Doctor Steven Vincent Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts and Sorcerer Supreme of Earth.
I myself pretty much enjoyed Geof Isherwood's drawings and Brian K. Vaughan's storytelling. Also, some drawings found scattered around by David Finch, John Romita Jr. and the cover art by a certain Johnson are appealing.
