With a rough plan, a shoestring budget, and little to no experience, Rob Erwin sets out on a modern day adventure to the remote backcountry of America’s most iconic national parks. Aside from the bipolar hillbillies, unfriendly wild animals, run-ins with the law, a mental breakdown, a bad first date, and a near-death experience . . . things actually went pretty well. Taking plenty of detours along the way, Rob’s contagious and hilarious sense of wanderlust carries him on a whirlwind road trip from the Smoky Mountains in the East, to Yellowstone, the Tetons, and Colorado’s snow-covered peaks in the West. In a refreshing style that brings these incredible wild places to life like no travel guide ever could, on seemingly every page we’re reminded of the one universal truth of travel . . . the best parts of any journey are the adventures we least expect.
Disappointing read. Sophomoric writing. Poor editing, with verb tense changes in the same sentence, subject-verb disagreement, word misuse & other errors that stop the reader & make him/her go back & try to figure out what the author just said. The title seems misleading; the story line was not what I expected. Rather than what I anticipated to be a humorous look at vacation adventures, it was a boring "what I did on summer vacation" type of story. (I went on this trail & saw a coyote, but I really wanted to see a bear.) The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because there was some interesting information on the national parks the author visited.
4 Major stops in a hiking adventure across the country
It was a short read, but enjoyable. With the title, I had expected more of a cross country hike, instead of drive here, hIke, drive there, hIke. I did enjoy the actual stories on the trail, just wish there had been more to the book.
Normally I would call a book like this a beach read, but it's much better suited for a mountain lake, a trail, or better than that the airport on the way to a mountainous place. The writing is simple but you get a good idea of the areas he travels to. Worth the read. I wish Mr. Erwin luck in his writing career
Interesting account of hiking in four national parks! Rob Erwin writes well! He did something he started out to do and even camped in the wolves' area after some misgivings!
If you like journal-like reading about travels around the world, this is a fun and to some extent educational journal about some of our national parks.
This book isn't what I expected. I think it is more of a young adult book. The author and his friends didn't seem prepared or serious in their journeys.
Rob Erwin is a pretty decent writer, but the book has no substance. I got a few tidbits of info about some national parks, but that's about it. Quick read.
If you like to read about someone else's adventures, then you will enjoy this book. I really enjoyed the humorous accounts of the authors trials and the good times he had that make up this book.
This is one mans adventure to the Smokey Mountains, Tetons, Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain National Parks. His goal wasn't to have a vacation, the goal was to have an adventure! Quick easy read with some interesting facts and some humor.
