The Problem of Prayer: And The Promise That Changes Everything

Rate this book
You pray and pray, pouring your heart out to God. You ask for grace, for answers, for something. And then…nothing. You ask yourself if God cares, or if He even exists.

The Problem of Prayer addresses the toughest dilemma every Christian doubt. The world has conditioned us to crave results, demanding instant solutions to our problems. But that’s not what faith is about. Faith in prayer is about surrendering to God’s will—seeing things through His eyes, not our own. During prayer, we too often focus on our sadness, confusion, and fear instead of realizing the moment offers us the opportunity to enjoy God’s greatest trust, hope, and love.

There’s only one guarantee in life, and it’s God is with you wherever you are, in your happiest times and in your darkest hours. In this encouraging, affirming exploration of our constant battle with unbelief, author Cherie Hill offers a deeply personal, compelling approach to transforming your own faith by honestly examining your doubt.

I'm just a sinner, saved by God's AMAZING grace, with one desire: for my life to be poured out as a servant to Christ, in order to bring glory to God.

God has given me the great joy of spreading His Word around the world through Scripturenow.com And even though I have a BA in Psychology and I'm trained in Biblical Counseling through the AACC . . . it is truly God who has qualified me, through my daily surrender, as I walk intimately with Him one day at a time.

In the most amazing journey of my life, God has seen fit to make me an International Bestselling Christian Living author. More miraculously, I've been ranked #6 in Bestselling authors for Amazon in the Religion and Spirituality category. Truly, God still does miracles. (It's ONLY by the grace of God that I am who I am. 1 Corinthians 15:10)

My published works are:"Waiting on God," "Be Still: Let Jesus Calm Your Storms," "Beginning at The End: Finding God When Your World Falls Apart, "The Ways of God: Finding Purpose Through Your Pain," "Hope Being Gone," "empty. (Living Full of Faith When Life Drains You Dry)," and my latest releases:

Very spiritual and uplifting. Does not matter what is your religion or faith because this book will be applicable and relevant to everybody. It is all about the relationship between human and his god. Yes many times we have our doubts and this book gives some good advices to how overcome those doubts.
I loved many quotes from the book like this one; “We need to allow God to be God and leave the how, when, and why in His hands. Faith”
Absolutely true we tend to worry many times about what is going on in the world forgetting that there is someone there who will handle it all. People should truly stop acting like god! Do good things and do what is needed to do and leave the rest in the hands of who can handle things.

This is a recommended read if you like spiritual books.

I won this book (Kindle edition) in a Goodreads Giveaway. Many thanks to Amazon and the writer, Cherie Hill.

Prayer is one of the foundations of Christian life yet many Christians feel their prayers are unanswered. This book seeks to explain why we may feel this way and how to be steadfast in our beliefs. It strives to show how to continue in prayer through the hardships of life.

Sometimes I felt the book treated hardships and crises too lightly but I now believe the author wanted to express that our fundamentals for Christian life and a relationship with God are simple. There is good information in this book and there is a nice collection of scriptures for different areas of life included.

I'm having trouble assigning a star rating. Maybe it is because my personal life has recently been hit with obstacles and struggles that seem huge and plentiful. My perspective may be tainted as I travail through heavy burdens which I try to leave with God in prayer.

I also don't believe in unanswered prayers. I believe God always answers prayers. The answer is either, "yes, no, or wait." Sometimes, though, at least for me, it's hard to tell which answer He is giving.

We have a loving, compassionate God. We are imperfect people. He holds our future and deals with us in love. Our difficulties are used to teach us lessons and to strengthen us. This book reminds us of these facts and encourages continued fellowship with our Lord.

I read this book via an Amazon KINDLE Unlimited download.

One of the problems I believe Christians have when it comes to prayer is their wanting to have some sort of immediate fulfilment of what they’re seeking, resulting in their questioning the very existence of the Lord. And when they do prayer many make the errors of forgetting how to prayer and that they don’t actually have to prayer to obtain their desires.

MATTHEW 6:7-8 [ESV]
And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

The most important thing in prayer is having no doubt but faith, for it let us remember what is said in JOHN 20:27 [ESV]

“Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”

Terrific resource for any Christian who, like me (millennial Catholic), struggles with praying consistently. Cherie Hill compassionately explains the Problem of Prayer: we often expect instant gratification and feel that God doesn't listen if He doesn't answer. Yet, He always listens and does what is best for us, even when it means that He seemingly does nothing. Through unconditional love, His actions are always perfect in any given situation.
The second half of this books is a comprehensive list of Bible verses to turn to according to our feelings / reason for prayer, e.g. anger, courage, hope, which I will be coming back to.
It was irritating that Hill uses multiple versions of the Bible. Otherwise, eye- and heart-opening.

Great content - small pet peeve.

I really loved the book. I'm not a great pray-er, so I really enjoyed the insights. I am a little peeved by using different versions of the Bible though. I wish there was one version used throughout the book. Otherwise, it was great book!

As with all books (except the Bible)...take it with a grain of salt. Some translations that were used and the context in which they were used seemed to contradict what the author was saying. I enjoyed the section of prayers taken from scripture at the end, but otherwise...eh.

Prayer still works

Pray until something happens. This book helps us pray Gods promises back to Him. He keeps His promises so you can be sure that when you cry out to Him using His own words, He has to answer for His namesake.
