Immortal Winter (Sector 4)

Rate this book
A princess locked away in an ice tower.
A handsome kidnapper who insists her savior-queen is a liar.
And a chance to break the curse that's bound them all.

Jayla Storm woke up today next to a dead body, with no memory of how it got there. Then Kip Stanton blew up her ice tower—the only home she’s ever known—and kidnapped her, insisting it was for her own good.

Now she's stuck with a group of rebels hell-bent on usurping the queen who saved Jayla's life. As her memories resurface, she's afraid to trust anyone, even while her feelings for Kip grow stronger.

But wherever Jayla goes, the monstrous ravagers follow. If she's going to survive, and perhaps save Kip and the others, she'll have to learn to trust someone—maybe especially herself.

The author gave me a free copy of this book for an honest review. This was not book I would have picked up on my own as I don't care for the 'witch' type book. But the mother earth magics in this book were written in a true fantasy element and it was fantastic! I loved the way this story unfolded.
Jayla Storm was living n a tower of ice created by Queen Imani for what she believed was her own protection with only one visitor a week. Her visitor was the queen's emissary who delivered a potion to 'help' Jayla recover from her mystery disorder. As the story moves, we find that Jayla has been entertaining another visitor, as secret visitor. When Jayla awakens to find the queen's emissary in her bed, her adventure to the truth begins. The queen can't be trusted and the rebellion is just beginning.

I loved this! This is a bit of Rapunzel and a bit of the movie The Huntsman: Winter's War. Jayla is a girl in an ice tower, she has been placed there by an evil ice queen. Jayla is rescued by a group of underground survivors, who know more about Jayla then she knows about herself because Jayla's memory has been messed with. Jayla doesn't know who to trust, but as her memories return, she knows one thing for sure; she needs to take down the ice queen. There's lots of cool elements in this book, and the romance is sweet and hot! I loved Jayla and Kip! Woo! They had some intense moments! There's some cool battle scenes, and all of the settings were really neat; great imagery. I loved the bridge of traitors! Super cool and wicked image! I would've loved to have a longer ending! The ending was good, but I always want more! I really enjoyed this!

Sector Four

Jayla, locked away in an ice tower, has no idea how her life will change. Everything she thought she knew? Gone in a flash of magically suppressed memories. It's not until she meets Kip, that everything seems right.
The Queen is an evil tyrant. Jayla, Kip and their allies set out on what seems to be an impossible quest to save the sector from the evil queen's grasp. Will they be enough to defeat her evil magic? The ravagers she controls? You have to read in order to find out!
This is yet another excellent addition to the Othala Witch Collection. I highly recommend reading them all. I've yet to read one I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. Another 5 star book!

Sector 4 isn't so cold

What an adventure this story brings you on! This is book 4 in the Othala Witches, and I am really enjoying the creativity in these stories.

N.R. Larry does a great job adding her sector with her use of such descriptive language you can see everything; the scenes, the characters, and the magic created.

A great story with an underlying fairytale theme that made me enjoy it that much more.

The only issue I had with the story is the ending felt rushed. As great as it was it felt like it ended somewhat abruptly.

An exciting fast paced fantasy that felt like a retelling of Snow White only much better. I loved how the romance, adventure, suspense and danger were all mixed together.
The characters felt real and I loved each of their personalities.
I definitely recommend this book to those who love well rounded fantasy adventures and fairy tale retelling.

Meh, it had it's moments. My main problem with this book was it's lack of editing. Words missing in sentences, commas in odd places. Please, find this book an editor. The sexy times were hot but I'm pretty sure you can't do those things in real life. Some of the things described in this book defy gravity. My main problem with this book was it's tendency to tell instead of show. There were a bunch of flash backs and memories that told what happened but seemed more like information dumps. I also had issues with the main character, she was somewhat schizo. One moment timid and unsure, then flirting, then full of fury with memory fully restored. I just feel like all the pieces weren't completely fleshed out in the story. I did enjoy the imagery and ideas but wish they were more descriptive. And who names a love interest Kip?

I'd give this book a solid 3.5 stars. I love the world that was created and the characters are great. My biggest complaint with Jayla is that once she gains her memories back there isn't much mentioned about her past or why she was locked away or thought Imani would be a better ruler than her at the time. Her memories are also recovered sort of swiftly...she undergoes a treatment and they come in a few flashes then what feels like a short time later its boom there all there again...I don't know I just felt there could have been a better build up to it.

I thought the reveal of how Imani became part monster was intriguing and would have loved to learn more about that and why having a twin was considered "bad" or for it to be clarified that it was her twin who was awful at first and that is why the word twin was almost used in a negative sense. I also thought the battle scenes and how Jayla is able to tap into her magic were well done. I could honestly picture it happening in my mind's eye while reading.

The sex/love making scenes were alright...they didn't have to be there but I wasn't upset at their presence. Now the one scene where Kip basically forces himself on her because of his lustful wishes wasn't something I was too excited about but Jayla did in the end consent so it even though she was mad at him. I don't know that whole thing could have and should have played better in my mind when she said no and to stop he should have no matter how lustful he was feeling.

All in all, I loved the world and the storyline and I did find myself tearing up at certain spots. Some because of how sweet they were and others because of sadness....oh the whole Kip fighting blind thing didn't make sense to me. The author never explained that I recall if his other senses were heightened to make up for the loss of sight or what. Especially since he is described as still being fast and lethal and jumping over enemies.

intriguing story that didn't touch me emotionally

Interesting world building, magic system, numerous unusual beings. This was a good concept for a story and was very interesting until Jayla regains her memories. After that point I kept hoping to like or understand her and I couldn't. Yes, Jayla took responsibility for having abandoned her throne to Imani, but we were never told how that happened, so it was difficult to understand why she did it in the first place or believe in her repentance.

Next, too often Jayla was rude and judgemental in how she treated Kip after she was whole again. She certainly didn't behave as if he were a real partner, since she kept running off to deal with things alone and had no problem trying to deceive him in the process. The sex scenes kept describing their bodies coming together and their souls blending, but I didn't see that in Jayla's behavior at all. She acted as though her decision was the only one that really mattered, and her power the only effective weapon.

Their relationship needed more substance, which could have been provided by giving us more flashbacks to Kip and Jayla's earlier relationship so we'd know who they were to each other before Imani got control of Jayla. Instead there were explicit sex scenes that felt more like a substitute for relationship, rather than being examples of who they were to one another.

This disconnect in Jayla's character was the authors' faults. They tried to make Jayla seem better than Imani by throwing in a couple of scenes where Jayla asked other people's advice, but then undercut it entirely by making Jayla keep sneaking off by herself to confront the bad guys without even telling anyone else what she was doing, much less listening to their objections or suggestions.

MINOR SPOILER On the downside : it was oddly perfunctory at the end. The big fight scene didn't really make much sense. Jayla spent most of the fight losing badly, but suddenly she turned it around and it wasn't clear how she did it. Then, too, after the battle several people who seemed dead were suddenly alive and in one case, Larry and Collins didn't explain how that was possible either. All in a the ending seemed rushed.

Ten long years ago...Jayla was left abandoned in her frozen tower. With no memory of her past.

Rescued from her tower by Kip, Jayla doesn't understand why anyone would go against the Queen. Forced to take a serum to regain her memories, Jayla is lost and confused, but deep down it doesn't feel like a lie. Does Jayla trust those from her past or will she succumb to the current reign of the Queen?

Set in a paranormal dystopian world divided into sectors, it is all anyone can do to survive within the barriers. Protected from Ravagers. The story maintains a steady pace, filled with action and hope. The both Jayla and Kip grow throughout the story, changing and shaping the course to rid Sector Four of the Evil Queen. The supporting cast remained strong throughout the story.

Despite being part of the Othala Witch Collection, Immortal Winter can be read as a stand alone. A great read for those who love happily ever after. 4.25/5 stars

This is my third book from Othala series - and once again it met my expectations as a great read where in each Sector things are different but still there are similarities :)
The plot was good and went smoothly, it had few surprises for me during book. The emotions were well described, i smiled and cried during they journey.
Jayla, what i can say i really enjoyed her way of thinking and being. Memories, were like a gift to me (you will get to know it during reading). She rocks!
Kip - a man that is loveable but he also got on my nerve (twice i thing) - and i was glad a he's not perfect :) but still an ideal companion :)

The side characters were full from blood and flesh as main ones :)

I recommend it to people who enjoy: paranormal romance, strong women and man, fight with evil!

Action packed from page one when heroine Jayla wakes up beside a dead body. Locked away in an ice castle, Jayla spends most of her time in isolation except for her friend Bessie and her keeper Arina. When Arina learns of Bessie, Arina dies and Jayla is kidnapped/rescued from the tower by a handsome stranger named Kip. Soon Jayla learns that the Ice Queen Imara is the wicked witch who has taken everything from her. Jayla is the only true descendant of the original thirteen of Othala and life flows from her fingertips while Imara only brings death. In an epic battle of good and evil, the story will keep you on your toes and rooting for Jayla before ending with a semi-HEA. My review is based upon a review copy.

An interesting read. I enjoyed it. It was pretty action packed from the beginning.

Jayla has been in an ice tower locked away since she can remember. Its all she knows. Til one day she wakes up to Arina's dead body. A friend of sorts and someone who brings her things and injections from the Queen. The very Queen who's locked her away. Jayla's been manipulated into thinking the curse upon them all is her fault. Things change when she's is taken from her tower by Kip a warrior. She doesnt trust him. The Ravagers are hot on their trail. Jayla is a pretty strong heroine and I really liked her. Kip was an ok guy but obviously is not a perfect "hero" type. I enjoyed the book and its different from what I've read before. I recommend.

A very intense and emotional story of good against evil. Evil is a queen who controls all with fear. She has turned her part of the world into a frozen dungeon. Any slight against her is punishable by death. In a tower locked away from all stands one young woman. She has been told that she must stay hidden to protect others. But she will soon learn the truth the hard and painful way.

I love the strength of Jayla. Where most would have curled up and died she still stands strong for those she cares for and for those forced down by the will of an evil queen. And it helps that she has a handsome loving man by her side.

This was a bit sci-fi, a bit dystopian and a bit paranormal romance. It had some really interesting characters and had a futuristic feel to it at times. I enjoyed the plot and had some good twists embedded. Jayla is really fierce and takes her role serious. She is a great female character. Kip is a wonderful male support for the female lead. This is a strong female heavy book though. There are several great supporting females that are strong and fierce and role model worthy. The authors could easily do more books for each of them. I volunteered to read this book.

Taking Back Control

This story is not my regular type of reading material. The author did a descent job in writing this book.

She built suspense, conflict, loss and resolution.

I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy received from the author.

Jayla Storm wakes up next to a dead body in her ice tower and has no idea how it gt there nor what happened. Then the handsome Kip Stanton blows up her tower and kidnaps her insisting the queen who saved her is a liar. Now she's stuck with rebels who insist the queen needs to be usurped and Ravagers who appear to be attracted to her. She also struggles with confusion as her memories start to come back and she gets feelings for Kip - can she start to trust anyone.

This story took some getting into as the movements forward and back between reality and memory were a little surreal and hard to cope with. The actual story was good and it contained lots of drama and intrigue. I could feel the emotions and could empathise with the characters.
