“For me as for so many others, the American West was the place of a new beginning. Its vastness, its beauty, and the courage of the people shaped in its image gave me the courage to come to terms with my life and my self. This book is a tribute to those people and that land—a book about how my hopes and dreams became reality, a book that has my heart in it.”Mountain Time is a wonderful part memoir, part personal essay, and part documentary of the places and people of the West that have inspired Jane Candia Coleman’s award-winning stories. It has something for everyone—nature, history, a poetic evocation of the land—while running through it all is the story of a woman’s gradual awakening to new possibilities, and to the realization of her strength.
If I were not familiar with the authors region I don’t think I would have enjoyed this book at all. I felt like it was written simply to impress the reader as to what a deep thinker the author is.
The imagery surrounding my homestead and soulful thoughts put into words astounds me. She describes the feelings evoked from the Chiricahua mountains and high rolling plains perfectly. The author has done her research and tells their story in such a creative lively way that they have also become her story. I admire this frontier woman, it takes the strong willed to endure and sustain life here. She has come searching and has left complete.
