Brodie Buchanan lives for war, the bloodier, the better. But lately, even her fellow Valkyrie have become concerned with how single-minded and blood thirsty she has become. Forced to take a holiday at the Southern Sanctuary, Brodie's boss has warned her not to return until she is completely chilled. Or in other words, bang a guy, they are the best stress relievers out there.
There’s nothing more dangerous than saying no to a Valkyrie. Doubly so when they are demanding you have sex with them. Unfortunately for Fen Valhalla, Fireman, and Air Mage, there is only one option available to him if he wants to escape the dreaded machinations of the Southern Sanctuary matchmaker, celibacy. As much as it pains him, the only way for Fen to remain single, is to swear off women completely. Except, he failed to factor in one very determined six-foot Valkyrie when he took his vow of abstinence.
With a magical arsonist wreaking havoc in the Sanctuary, it will take Brodie and Fen working together, to hunt down and stop the firebug menace before anyone is killed. There is only one small problem, the more time Brodie spends with the vexing man, the more she finds herself wanting not just merely sex from Fen… she wants it all. Damn, so all she has to do now is convince Fen that love is not a dirty four-letter word. Or, she could just kill him… decisions, decisions.
An optimist, yet overly sarcastic. Big on bringing the laughs and the heat to her paranormal romance and cosy mystery series. A huge fan of snark, with a side order of bickering and a double heaping of banter. Delivering to the page sweet alpha males and their more than a match female counterparts. Before wrapping it all up in a hugely satisfying HEA each and every time.

Best one in the series (along with the Disaster one)! Brodie is a Valkyrie and an absolute beast on the battlefield. She doesn't understand feelings or girly stuff, only killing. She is sent to earth for a "vacation", which she hates, and ends up becoming a magnet for some magical creature that is starting fires wherever she goes.
Enter sexy firemen!!
To get out of her vacation early, Brodie just needs to get laid - according to her boss. I just have to wonder why all bosses don't have this attitude of "you need a sex break". The workplace would be a lot happier if they did. Just sayin'. Maybe Karen would stop leaving passive-aggressive notes in the break-room if she was getting some.
Brodie decides to use the Valkyrie way of selecting the right candidate. She fights them. When Fen wins by using his magic, she tells him he is worthy to have sex with her. ... Again, why isn't this a thing? I think I'll make my husband do something to impress me tonight and then tell him he is worthy to have sex with me. And, if he doesn't impress me, I'll say he is unworthy. This will be great for our marriage! Why didn't I think of this 20 years ago?
Sorry baby. Maybe tomorrow night. You need an ice pack?
Fen actually refuses Brodie's offer because he has taken a vow of celibacy (and yes, it's stupid). But, of course they end up being partners to solve this firebug mystery. That's how all of the couples get together.
Fen was okay, but Brodie totally stole the show in this book. She is hilariously savage! I just want to be her best friend.
The books just keep getting better and better. Reading this one made my day, smiling and laughing at the antics of Fen and Brodie and all the wonderful inhabitants of this crazy world. I was trying to read slowly and make the fun last longer but I just couldn't do it. I'll go back and re-read instead.
Reading the earlier stories isn't required but is enjoyable. Can't wait for the next book. Highly recommend it.
In a word - MAGIC. This was a perfect blend of romance, action and laughs. In fact, I laughed so hard I snorted red cordial all over my kindle. Brodie would have to be the best heroine I've read, ever (It would definitely be a photo finish with Hadleigh) Her blunt Valkyrie ways were just awesome. And the whole, her chasing Fen, our Hero, demanding sex from him. Hilarious. And Fen. He's not an asshole or a jerk. But he had just declared he's celibate in order to avoid the dreaded matchmaker. All kinds of tempted when Brodie falls in his lap, but he stands firm, thus the vexing part of the equation. Gaia stepped up this novel, the self-defence classes were wonderful. The Bigfoot chapters had me ROTFL. And Brodie meeting his father/family, just wonderful. My fave part though was the baddie. How awesome that Brodie is the one who fights him, with a little help from Fen. Even during the action, fight scenes, I was cracking up. Superb. Another supremely satisfying HEA. LOVED it.
LOVED IT. This book was just sheer fun to read. It made me laugh, then laugh harder still. I want to be a Valkyrie, they rock. Brodie was fantastic. Blunt. Bloodthirsty. Kick ass. Fen was her perfect mate - Fireman, air mage, protector and sigh-worthy. The premise is just awesome - Brodie is sent to the sanctuary to chill out, or more specifically bang a 'stress relieving' guy - her boss's orders. Of course she chooses Fen, but he's just sworn off women because he knows the family match maker has him in her sites. Saying 'no' to a Valkyrie is unheard of - let the fun begin. There's a mysterious magical firebug stalking Brodie. And when the final showdown between the bad guy and Brodie takes place I had tears of laughter running down my face. LOVED that it was Brodie who took on the bad guy and Fen, her supportive back-up. So much to love here. Gaia brings the funny, and the self defence classes were a hoot. Even more awesome was the bigfoot scenes and the time spent with Fen's family - Brodie fan-girling over meeting his Dad was genius.
This ninth book in the series bought the fun, and a major sizzle factor between the leads. Even better, it was a joy to read, I'm still coming down off the five star high.
Joyous, fun romp. This took my breath away - for two reasons - one it was so darn funny. The other, the romance was way hot (with a teaspoon of sweetness). Brodie, is a Valkyrie. She's impatient, surly, blunt, fierce, deadly and beyond amazing. Her fellow Valkyries are moving on with their lives - and the new self-obsessed generation joining up are annoying the hell out of her. Forced to go on holiday - her boss tells her to chill/relax, or in other words 'bang' a guy for stress relief. And not to show up for work until she does so. Banished to the Southern Sanctuary, Brodie lays eyes on Fen, fireman/air magician and likes what she sees. Fen, however has just taken a vow of celibacy in an attempt to avoid the dreaded family matchmaker's manipulations. Brodie pursues Fen - and he, poor soul has to keep rejecting the bodacious beauty. So much fun - the self-defence classes with a heaping of fave characters appearing. There is a hilarious scene of Brodie/Fen trying to herd Bigfoot away from the Sanctuary. A wonderful visit with the Valhalla family, where Brodie is more than a little starstruck by Fen's Dad. And let's not forget the magnificently self-obsessed evil fire setting dude - who's setting fires around the sanctuary. Brodie's fight with him is wonderful, funny and just hilarious. Love how the author leaves it to Brodie to defeat the bad dude, rather than having Fen step up (though he does help).
I have LOVED this series. I think joyous might be the right word to describe them. Wonderful couples. Who have depth, flaws and are funny - and are always perfect for one another, in the end. The secondary characters/creatures have amused, entertained and added depth to this magical world.
Having just finished book 9 - all I can say is - I need book 10, now! Bring on book 10. In the meantime, because I read them so fast, it might already be time for a re-read of the series.
Loved this book. And LOVE this series. I'm pretty sure I had a goofy smile on my face when I was reading this - when I wasn't laughing out loud that is. I so want to be a Valkyrie when I grow up - Brodie was blunt, bloody thirsty and just down right wonderful. Our firefighter/Air Magic wielding Hero - Fen, was witty, sexy and strong. What a great match - there was give and take. A hot, sweet romance with loads of witty dialogue as Fen tries to maintain his celibacy vow - whilst Brodie applies the pressure and tries to change his mind. There was a huge dose of secondary characters - Gaia, was a scream. And the big bad - the Fabio Vulcan was perfect. Especially liked how Brodie was the one to fight him and come to Fen's rescue. It was a nice change up from the Hero always doing the hard work.
This would have to be one of my favourite series to re-read. Am always picking up little in-jokes and threads that run through all the books that make this world truly fun and magical. I know it's selfish - but seriously, when's the next one due out?
Seriously, if this was a meal I'd have heartburn - I gobbled it down so fast. What else is there to say but how much I adore Fen and Brodie together. The strong, determined Valkyrie chasing the H, who is currently celibate? Who thinks up this stuff? Well, thankfully Jane Cousins does. The romance was hot, yet had some real sweet moments. Loads of witty dialogue and clever/funny set ups. Loved the inclusion of all the secondary characters - meeting up with old faves like Gaia, and the Great-Great-Aunts, and the match maker - plus we are starting to meet a few new ones (do I detect future new leads?) And Brodie's fight scene with the bad guy? Hilarious. That whole - it's raining hair - thing practically had me on the floor I was laughing so much.
Yes, this book could be read on its own - but you don't want to do that, trust me. You want to start at the beginning and read through the entire series because there are heaps of in-jokes and secondary characters who develop from book to book. And the world building goes from strength to strength as well. Loved this book. Love this series. And am now the official number one fan of Jane Cousins.
Not sure I have the words to describe how completely awesome this book was. Brodie, the Valkyrie heroine was beyond blunt, funny and bloodthirsty. And Fireman/air mage Fen? Whoa, someone pass me a fan. The set-up for this one is hilarious - Brodie, who is pissing all her fellow Valkyries off because she's been hogging all the kills lately is sent on vacation to the Southern Sanctuary and told to relax/bang a man, and don't come back til you have. Fen, not wanting to fall victim to the magical family matchmaker has just taken a vow of celibacy. So now we have Brodie chasing Fen, trying to bluntly seduce him. While a firebug is running around town setting magical fires.
So much to love here - the 'Fabio' inspired magical firebug setting fires, the bigfoot encounter had me ROFL. Brodie fan-girling over Fen's dad. The self-defence classes with Gaia being painful yet wonderful. The ongoing glimpses of backstories like how Gaia is coping with her pregnancy is just the icing on the cake. And finally, that fight b/w the villain and Brodie (It's raining hair! - OMG)
Definitely the best book so far in the series - but then again I said that about the last book and the book before that. This HEA cloud is getting awfully high and I don't ever want to come down.
Once again JC has written a h that I would absolutely love to become besties with. Brodie is even more blood thirsty than Hadleigh! (how is that even possible?) Fen is as usual the perfect match for her, along with a whole community full of amazing characters. I actually use these wonderful books as a self treat, after undergoing a difficult treatment I reward myself by reading one and no matter how bad things are these exciting stories always manage to make me laugh and take my mind of my problems. Thank you Ms. Cousins and please please write faster... I'm nearly all caught up!! ;)
This was just sheer fun - the witty dialogue, the clever plot, and the amazing characters. I never know which way one of Jane Cousins books is going to go when I crack it open - and that's what I love about them. They are fresh, unique and sweep me up into this amazing magical world (that I never want to leave and always dread those two little words - the end) Brodie, our Valkyrie, is all things stoic, strong and black & white. She lives to kill stuff. Until she's forced to take a holiday to learn to chill out and stumbles across Fen - instant lust has her demanding they have sex. Fen, our H, a firefighter with air powers, is easy going, sexy, and has just taken a vow of celibacy. That he is barely holding onto by his fingernails thanks to the tempting and eager Valkyrie. These two each seem to be in a rut - until they meet and bring out the best in each other. There were so many scenes I loved in this - anything with Gaia, the self-defence classes, the chapter in the woods with Bigfoot, Brodie meeting Fen's family, and the fight scene with the Vulcan God guy, who was too vain, and too marvellous for words. Brodie shined in this fight I won't give away what she does to win, but it's hysterical.
This is the ninth book in the series - and jane Cousins seems to be one of those rare authors who is consistently good and funny - whilst always delivering a hot/steamy romance with a side order of sweet. Love this series.
From the moment I met Brodie, I loved her. Then I met Fen, and I loved him too. Them together was perfect. It's hard to pick a favorite from this series because they're all 5-star reads for me. But this one is definitely up there.
Xena rocks this this one! I found this one extra funny. I read books 5-9 of this series back-to-back in roughly 5 days. They all run together in my head now. They were all about the same - light, funny romance with action mixed in in good ways. All of them have their first sex scenes at approximately the 60% mark, per Kindle. The characters all come to the same conclusions, reversing their opinions about staying single and carefree over the course of a few pages. Formula? Yes. But it's still good, and the characters are very endearing. Definitely worth reading.
OMG, I fell so hard for this book you probably heard the thump around the world. LOVED IT. Brodie, our heroine Valkyrie was beyond awesome. She's blunt, blood-thirsty and kick ass. I need her to be my best friend right now. And Fen, our fireman and air mage, yeah, okay, it's a little stretch that he's taken a celibacy vow - but seriously, how else would this story line work? So I totally decide to invest and as always JC just blew me away. I was laughing, and all but rolling around on the floor. Too many delightful little things to count - The bigfoot encounter. The self-defense class. Oh, and the final show down b/w Brodie and the Fabio bad dude (It's raining hair!- I defy you not to laugh) And we weren't just served up a sizzling hot romance - there was all these bonus visits from main & secondary characters - Gaia, just blew me away, a little wacky but relatable. Hadleigh likewise, is having probs dealing with her pregnancy. LOVE this world. I want to move there and be adopted by this charming eccentric magical family. Read this series, people. It is awesome.
Brodie is told to go on vacation and not come back until she gets laid. But Brodie is a Valkyrie and doesn't want to do anything other than fight. Enter Fen, who intrigues her but is currently celibate to outwit his matchmaking mother.
What I enjoyed: * Characters in this series are always fun. * Seeing Brodie learn there is more to life than just battle . Her interactions at the training center were gold. * Fen is interesting. His power was very different and cool how he used it. * I think this was the first time Gaia didn't annoy me in one of these books - good for her
What could have been better: * * Brodie's constant "I'm a Valkyrie. I don't do girly-girl stuff. Why doesn't he want me?" thoughts got annoying.
This was a lot of fun and made me laugh. So far, this is my second favorite of the series, right after To Woo A Warrior, probably because Brodie as a Valkyrie is also a warrior.
Another fun trip to the Southern Sanctuary and Aunt Alma's vacation flyer made it into the hands of Brodie, a Valkyrie who has been ordered to take a holiday from the battlefields... She unfortunately has a firebug follow her which lands her in the path of fireman Fen and his vow of celibacy has just been challenged. Always love these couples and the silly but sometimes violent conflicts. Good thing they are supernatural and heal fast... Only neg is the inner dialog was overly long at times and the moment was lost in the word count... But still a good read.
