Mary Berry is an English food writer and television presenter. After being encouraged in domestic science classes at school, she went to college to study catering. She then moved to France at the age of 21 to study at Le Cordon Bleu school, before working in a number of cooking-related jobs.
She has published more than seventy cookery books (her first being The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook in 1970) and hosted several television series for the BBC and Thames Television. Berry is an occasional contributor to Woman's Hour and Saturday Kitchen. She has been a judge on the BBC One (originally BBC Two) television programme The Great British Bake Off since its launch in 2010.
This was a gift I received for Christmas and have been really impressed with it! This is the kind of cookbook that I think is more geared towards dinner parties and occasions than recipes you would make every day, that said, all the ingredients are easily attainable and recipes are relatively straight forward so there’s no reason this couldn’t be used more regularly. For dinner parties there’s a very useful set of tables at the start of the book letting you know which recipes you can prepare ahead, which ones are freezeable for dinners later in the week etc.
There are also quite a few vegetarian recipes in here that I think will be very useful as I have a few veggie friends and relatives that I always worry what to cook for them without giving them something a little boring and uninspired - looking forward to trying the mushroom bruschetta, stuffed peppers and the thyme and mushroom pate in particular!
4/5 stars - I was a little disappointed that there weren’t more baking recipes in here as that is what we know Mary Berry best for, but I assume that a lot of her other books cover baking in more detail. There are a lot of recipes in here that I will be trying over the next couple of months and can’t wait to try them!
I, like many other Americans, came to know Mary Berry by watching the Great British Baking Show. Her dislike of soggy bottoms and gentle admonitions to the contestants make her a an absolute delight. Well known for her baking, this book is a general, all around cookbook that covers everything and is a companion of sorts to a show she hosts on the BBC.
There is nothing overly complicated in the book – it would make an excellent addition to a beginner’s library with recipes for basics like guacamole, simple bruschetta, easy main dishes and of course some delightful desserts.
All along the way Mary offers her sage advice on ways to prepare ahead and to make the recipe prep as easy as possible. There are rather extensive sections at the beginning with pantry suggestions, meal plans utilizing the recipes in the book and freezer planning. These would all be welcome to the new cook or to someone just setting up their house. I’ve been married for 36 years now and I still found some useful tips – one can never stop learning when it comes to cooking and baking!
The recipes are offered in both British and American weights and measures so there are no worries about having to “translate” between grams and ounces and the like.
Mary Berry. What can you say about Mary Berry? Although a food writer and TV presenter since the 1960s, many people (here, at least) have only come to know her more recently as co-judge with Paul Hollywood on the runaway British hit, “The Great British Bake”. Each week on the show (known as The Great British Baking Show in North America) home bakers are pitted against one another, taking on a variety of challenges in order to win the grand prize: a much-coveted crystal cake plate.
I love food shows and this is one of my favourites. My husband, who is not a baker, watches as well…and enjoys the home baked treats somewhat inspired from my watching.
Recipes are interesting but not so much everyday for a US person since some of the ingredients and equipment mentioned are not everyday. Instructions are pretty clear for the most part and the pictures are really pretty. The one strange thing to me is that there are some ingredients in here that Mary seemed to be entirely unfamiliar with during episodes of Bake Off.
This one of many Mary Berry books I have, this one is a more basic cookbook to help you overcome your fears of actually cooking anything for your family, friends and sundry others. However fear not Mary comes to the rescue, she walks you through every stage of your meal and I defy anyone to go wrong with a Berry recipe.
