Athena

Rate this book
Always unique and bold, Athena stood apart from the rest of the Pantheon by aiding the famous heroes of Greek Mythology. This beautifully illustrated short story provides an exciting overview of Athena’s role in the legendary tales of Odysseus, Hercules, Perseus, and the Argonauts. Young readers will discover why the Goddess Athena has endured as a symbol of wisdom, courage and justice. “Athena” is also an introduction to the pet dinosaurs, pixie wings, and resourceful heroines that populate Jason Sandberg's eBooks. Jason Sandberg, born in Minneapolis in 1971, acquired a love of drawing after discovering the artwork of Jacob Kurtzberg. His paintings have been exhibited in Minneapolis and Manhattan. Art Historian Scott McCloud classified his work as uncategorizable. “I’m a Fine Artist who also wants to produce the ‘missing books’ from my childhood, the books I wished I’d had.”

This is a short but informative overview of the courageous goddess Athena written in a way kids, who are somewhat versed in Greek mythology, can understand. It points out exactly who Athena was, what she did and how she was perceived. The text on each page is kept to a minimum and sticks to the point. Other Greek gods and places from the myths are mentioned, and if children are not familiar with the basic stories, these will require a bit of explanation or will not make sense.

The illustrations are interesting and well fitting to the topic. Although different from Mr. Sandberg's normally colorful illustrations, these set the scene for Greek myths nicely and are sure to lure younger eyes to gaze through them again and again.
