Rigel Bryant is the only natural born telepathic human in the history of the universe. His father, Ethan, wants him to lock his abilities away, but Rigel doesn’t see why it is wrong to use his gifts.

Rigel’s carefree attitude is shattered when he receives an urgent telepathic distress signal that overwhelms his every thought. The call comes from Ethan’s old friend, Tesuu the Zumiin, who saved his life during his misadventures as Caretaker.

In order to reclaim Rigel’s mind, the father-son pair hire a beautiful pilot named Carine to take them to the Zumiin planet. When the trio arrives, they are attacked by AI robots determined to kill any potential threat to the Zumiin, including their own programmer.  Before Ethan and Tesuu can find a solution to the problem, a deadly poisonous snake bites Ethan, sending him into a deep coma. While Tesuu battles the rampaging robots, Rigel hunts for a rare antidote to save his father’s life.

Can Rigel become a hero like his father, or is it too late for him and the rest of the universe?

Good sci fi adventure

Although the ending is happy, Sentinel is dark with a high body count. Rigel is not a likeable character in the beginning; his redemption is believable, but it felt like the price was too high. The book is well-written with a tense story line and multiple interesting non- human people. I enjoyed the Caretaker series.

Having not read the first two books in the series I was a little apprehensive to read Sentinel, worried that I wouldn’t be able to understand the world that had been built over the course of the first two books. However the synopsis was too intriguing to pass on and boy am I glad I didn’t because I absolutely LOVED Sentinel! I was drawn into the story within the first page and could definitely be read as a standalone. I rated it a 4/5 stars!

Rigel is the son of Ethan and Aria who were the protagonists of the first two novels: Caretaker and Guardian. I really loved Rigel’s character development over the course of Sentinel. Rigel is placed in several situations over the course of the story that force him to use more than just his telepathic powers to save him and those he cares about from danger. It is Rigel’s character development and the relationships explored in Sentinel that really had me hooked.

The world building in Sentinel was incredible. Josi really knows how to draw her readers in with her vivid and descriptive writing style. The only reason I’m not giving it a 5/5 was that I was a little bit let down by the ending and felt like at times the story was a little bit too rushed in places, with a lot of p.o.v jumping. But all in all it was a very enjoyable read, and I will definitely be recommending Sentinel to friends!

Thank you to Future House Publishing for sending me a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I rated this book 3.5 stars
Book 3 of the Caretaker Chronicles, Sentinel. I recieved a copy of Sentinel in exchange for my honest review. So thank you Future House Publishing for the opportunity.

Sentinels is about the Caretakers psychic son, Rigel. Who has manipulated those around him since childhood. He’s selfish and a little corrupt, making his journey through the book all the sweeter. Sentinels captures the complexity of relationships. Rigel’s family have made excuses for his behaviour until they become exasperated by his lack of remorse. Rigel doesn’t understand their anger and pain because he has always been that way. Rigel is shoved into a situation that he can’t wrangle out of. For the first time he has to work for the things he wants.

The novel has a good storyline and interesting Sci-fi elements that seemed plausible to me. Except for the finale which was a little convenient. The author has a great grasp of writing characters with flaws and challenges them to grow. I went from despising Rigel to 100% routing for him. The romance between Rigel and Carine left a lot to be desired, lacking apprehension and seduction. The author has great visual and sensory writing, immersing me in her worlds.

I enjoyed the book, it was an easy read but I was a little let down by the ending. In contrast to the rest of the book it was dull.

**I recieved a copy of Sentinel in exchange for my honest review. ***

I would give this a 3.5 star rating. I love this series and really liked where each book took us...however, I kind of wish the main story could have been moved forward instead of this side story with Rigel.

I was reminded of Star Wars when Rigel was looking for parts in outdoor markets and shops and found an antidote in one of the shops. The shop owners were all different species. The Fiyl reminded me of the NZT pills from the movie Limitless. It was really interesting to see Rigel evolve and develop throughout the story so that was good but nothing really happened with Ethan, Aria, Kaiya or Polara....they were just off to the side with very few parts in the story.

It was action packed and very interesting (although it dragged a little and then sped up at the end) so if you've read Josi's other books in this series you will want to read this as well. She's a great author. Can't wait to see what she writes next!

Josi Russell is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. This book is one I had a hard time putting down. I usually don't love science fiction... But I am so glad I gave her books a try! Love each and every book she writes!! Read this series!
