In 1783, man soared into space, riding a hot-air ballon; as hot air is lighter than the air around us. Could an object, heavier than iar, defy gravity and fly? In 1905, the Wright brothers found the answer and a flew a machine heavier than air, That marked the beginning of the great aviation story. Since then, aircraft's range, speed and capability have increased manifold. So have their areas of application. Work is currently on to achieve spectacular advances in aviation, including a solo flight round the earth, in less than 70 hours! These achievements prove that even sky can't set the limit to the future of aviation.
This book presents the story of how the man's great dream of flying came true, how the technological advancements affected the evolution of aircrafts, and how it changed the course of history.
I caught hold of this book during my college days from the pile of the books donated by the seniors for the coming batches. Its title immediately caught my attention. I grew up near the Delhi airport in a defense colony. As a kid, I had a great view of the runway of the Delhi Airport and used to see planes taking off and landing on a regular basis. It always used to make me wonder and feel proud of the technological progress mankind had achieved in the field of aviation in such a short period of time. So reading a book about the story of how airplanes came into existence was a no-brainer for me. This book does a great job by whetting your appetite to read more about aviation. It is not a history of aviation in depth but more of a beginner's level introduction in this field. The chapters are well written and follow a good flow as the book progresses. Overall it is great short read into this field. Certainly not bad for a hour and a half read. Also this book is the first time when I used my powers as a member of the Goodreads librarians group. As this book was not in the database of goodreads (Something I was quite amazed of in the beginning), I thought why not add it yourself. So hopefully you guys will like my addition into the goodreads database and like this book.
