Determined to put her family back together, Sloane Harper stalks her ex husband and his annoyingly stunning mistress, Kate Stappleton. But she’s not the only one. Handsome IRS agent Ethan Cunning is surveying Kate too, but for entirely different reasons. He is attempting to nail Kate’s playboy boss. Ethan and Sloane decide to help each other, which sends Sloane’s wobbly life spinning out of control. She’ll have to face danger, humiliation, and – scariest of all – the dating scene, to lure her daughters’ father home. Losing control was the best thing to happen to Sloane… until it turned lethal.
Astrid Arditi has studied at Hogwarts, ridden a dragon, swam with mermaids and flown to the moon. Recently, she traveled to Mount Olympus… She leads a double life: one of words and whimsy; the other one chasing her two young kids around the playground and kissing away booboos. She’s a spy, a princess, a unicorn, a wife, a mother and an author. Life is never dull in her messy home in Brooklyn, or in her dreams where she escapes as often as she can. She writes from experience, of course. You may not believe it, but everything in her books has actually happened to her…even if only in her imagination.
A Cunning Plan by Astrid Arditi is her debut novel. I am not afraid to try a new author, in fact, I am always on the lookout for one. You never know where that hidden gem may come from and I found one here.
The cover is so pretty, but it was the blurb that really grabbed me.
A woman scorned does not bode well for Tom.
The first pages had me cracking up, all the while thinking, the bitch is crazy.
I want to jump into the pages and punch both their lights out. Tom is a douche and Sloane is a wimp. He really needs to man up. Ethan, hmmm, a hunky IRS agent and Sloane’s life gets more interesting…and humorous once he enters the story.
I cursed and laughed my way through a Cunning Plan by Astrid Arditi. Her writing makes me think of Janet Evanovich. The more I read, the more I couldn’t help but laugh at her misconceptions and naivety. She is one of us…a real person with all her insecurities alive and well.
The two little girls are cute as hell with tons of personality, lovable bundles of joy.
And we cannot forget Sloane’s trusty sidekick, Claudia. She reminded me of Rosie on Will and Grace, if you have ever watched the TV show, you can imagine her personality ‘shining’ through.
A Cunning Plan by Astrid Arditi is a funfilled romp, full of mystery and romance, with delightful and heart-grabbing characters. Seeing this is Astrid’s entrance in the writing world, I can hardly wait to see what she comes up with next.
I received an ARC of A Cunning Plan from Astrid Arditi in return for an honest review.
What would you do if your husband whom you still thought you loved left you for another woman - someone who had been his mistress ? Would you cry and move on or would you wish for them to come back and in the meanwhile stalk the new girlfriend ? If you are like Sloane Harper, then you would pick the latter. For the past few weeks , Sloane has been staking out Kate's apartment building hoping to catch a glimpse of the woman her husband left her for. During one of her stake-outs, a mystery man jumps in her car and hands her a top secret spy assignment. Enter Ethan who is currently undercover and trying to catch a criminal , but since he stands out he needs someone a bit more sly and incospicious and he wants Sloane to help him. He has been trying to pin down Kate's boss Gabriel for a crime and this may be his last chance as none of the other evidence seems to stick. Sloane reluctantly agrees to help and soon finds herself swept up in Gabriel's world as the pair start dating . Will Sloane try and convince Ethan that Gabriel is not the man he thinks he is but someone else in his organisation or has Sloane found herself wrapped up in the thought of someone new loving her - that she can't see clearly and will put her family's life in danger ? At first I thought this was going to be a bit like a Stephanie Plum /Presley Thurman type cozy mystery with the main character having a humourous and troublesome side but ended up being more of a Family Saga/ Drama/ Romantic Suspense story. I enjoyed this book, but have to say at the beginning - I wasn't keen on Sloane as she felt a little pathetic and desperate , however this changed near the end of the novel as Sloane grew some balls and became the strong and brave female she had hiding underneath all along as the ending gave her the courage she needed to move on with her life and say good riddance to the past.
I am going to come straight out and admit this, I didn’t think I would like A Cunning Plan by what I read in the synopsis . What I didn’t expect was the humor that was in the book. I wasn’t expecting to laugh as much as I did.
I actually felt very bad for Sloane in the first few chapters of the book. She was blindsided by her divorce and refused to accept it. She had the mindset that her divorce was only temporary and that her husband will eventually come back and remarry her. I actually wanted to hug her during that part of the book. It was so sad to read. But, once Ethan began his campaign to get her to do his dirty work (get into for Gabriel Varela) for him, the book took off.
Tom, Sloane’s ex, was a huge jerk and I really wanted to punch him. He knew that Sloane wanted him back and he kept stringing her along. To be honest, I couldn’t stand how he treated her. Like she was beneath him. Always laughing at her when she would trip or make a mistake. When Sloane decided to start living her life instead of waiting for him, in other words…dating, he freaked out. Hard core freaked out. I think I said out loud during that point of the book “Can’t have your cake and eat it to sweetpea”.
Ethan Cunning, oh where do I begin with him. I had a love/hate relationship with him, like Sloane. He kinda did creep me out with all the stalking he did. I mean, he showed up everywhere Sloane was and it was freaky. But, in a way, Sloane was getting hers for stalking Tom’s mistress/new girlfriend. I also didn’t like how he could change in a minute. When he called Sloane desperate (all because he was jealous of her dating Gabriel), I wanted to reach through the book and smack him. Hard.
I loved the friendship that Sloane had with Claudia. It was one of the most honest ones in the book and oh boy, did Claudia not hold back. She was brutally honest and did not hold back of her dislike for Tom (which made me love her even more). She truly had Sloane’s best interests at heart and she was truly a best friend to Sloane.
The relationship Sloane had with her mother, Bizzy, was very complicated. To be honest, I did think was very selfish in taking advantage of her mother for 6 months but then again, I didn’t think it was selfish. Bizzy was not a great mother….always putting Sloane down, buddying up to Tom and harping on Claudia. Plus, she was always drinking her “lemonade” and was always half lit. The whole day after a binge with Claudia was hilarious.
What I liked the most about this book was that Sloane cherished her children and Tom was a great father, even if he was a jerk in every other area of his life. They made a united front to co-parent as peacefully as possible for Rose and Poppy. I will say that the highlight of this book was the horse/whore conversation and its after effects. I couldn’t breathe, I was laughing so hard.
The storylines of A Cunning Plan were great. I couldn’t decide if I was Team Ethan or Team Gabriel for most of the book but I can tell you that I was most definitely not Team Tom. I do like that Sloane’s super secret spy mission did get results, even if it did go a little haywire (well, a lot haywire). I do have some questions that needed to be answered (what about Alina and Sloane’s friendship? Will it survive what happened?) but I am sure that it will be answered in the next book.
How many stars will I give A Cunning Plan: 4
Why: A very fast paced mystery that kept you guessing. Also a great look into how a woman blindsided by her divorce got her life and self-worth back.
Will I reread: Yes
Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes
Age range: Adult
Why: Language and violence
**I received a free copy of this book and volunteered to review it**
A light well paced, easy to read story here which maybe aimed at a less male, old and grumpy audience than someone like me. That being said it has all the right ingredients, well written, nice pacing with a good balance of good strong narrative and realistic dialogue. I liked most of the characters here so another plus, I could have done with more of some and less of others but maybe that's always the way. Extremely good sign that I was engaged throughout given I wouldn't normally stick with this genre as like I say, maybe I'm not the target audience. But pick it up and judge for yourself. You will find a well written enjoyable light and entertaining story between the covers of this book and when I spend my money on a book, what more could I want, A deserved 4 stars.
Sloane Harper is smart and savvy woman, a mother, a friend and now an ex-wife, she has been through the mill recently, her husband has left her for another woman and she finds herself devoting her days to stalking the other woman, the lovely Kate and trying to find dirt on her.
Whilst she is stalking, she discovers she is also under surveillance and in to her life comes the enigmatic, handsome Ethan, an agent for not MI5, FBI or CIA, nope he works for something even worse, the IRS. He is trying to bring down Sloane's new girlfriends boss and somehow he and Sloane end up helping one another to achieve their goals.
Sloane despite being a little ditsy is quite adept at sleuthing and together with Ethan try to dig the dirt on both Kate's boss and Kate herself, Sloane wants her husband back and Ethan wants Kate's dodgy boss but will things go to plan?!
This was a great read with an intriguing yet fun plot. Sloane is quite the character and it was a pleasure to watch her develop. Well worth a read.
Thank you to Lola's Blog Tours for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
DELIGHTFUL This was a delightful read, even if the heroine, who you just couldn’t hate was a bit ditsy. Easy to read, well written, the characters lived despite not being your average everyday sort of people. Some interesting observations and I rather liked the ending as being very realistic. Kept me turning the pages.
This was a really fun and funny book. The main character, Sloane, is finding it hard to move on after her divorce. She's clumsy and suffers from a weak self-esteem. But Ethan Cunning, an IRS agent needs her help. Now she has something to do with herself instead of feeling sorry for her situation. I liked how "real" Sloane felt. But she was moody as a toddler. She can throw a good tantrum. So she was a little immature at times, but very fun to read about. I look forward to more of this series.
This books follows Sloane Harper a women who just lost her husband to divorce due to him seeing another women. Sloane desperately wants to get her husband back and starts stalking the women he is seeing Kate. While Sloane is stalking her husband's new girlfriend a handsome IRS agent seeks her out to do some spying on Kate's boss. Sloane doesn't know what to do right away if she is going to help Ethan because she doesn't want to put her family in danger.
The author does a great job with this story line. I feel like we are presented with a lot of information up front to build the back story and who is who. After you get the basic facts the author did a great adding in the suspense so that you kept wanting more from the book and you also started to fall in love with the characters. I also think the story line is very unique since as a reader you really got to see what lengths a scorned women will go to and what it takes to get passed a major event in someone's life. The author creates a whole world that you can submerge yourself in and feel connected.
My favorite character was Sloane although Claudia and Bizzy do come in second place. Sloane doesn't really know what to do with her life and also at the beginning of the book ready to let her past life go. Sloane really becomes an entirely different women during the course of the book. I feel like she learns about her strength from all different sources in the book. Sloane's children are very supportive of her and just want what is best for their mother. I love the bond that we get to see between mother and daughter in multiple senses as we also get a look at Sloan and Bizzy's relationship.
The author did a great job with not including to much side stories that would be distracting to the book. I felt like it was the perfect length and in the end everything fits together perfectly!
I LOVED the ending! It was like what!
The author does a great job giving us one final look at all of the characters in the end. Also, we really get to learn about Sloane's ex husband and what her final decision is with her life. The author also left it open for a great sequel!
I would suggest this as a weekend read or when you have more time to sit down and read longer. The book is very fast paced and I had a hard time putting the book down. There was really natural stopping points you wanted to know what was going to happen next and how it was all going to end.
I received a copy of this book from Masquerade Book Tours for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of this book.
A Cunning Plan is about a woman who’s resorted to staking out (not stalking) her ex’s new girlfriend in the hopes of figuring out how to get her husband back. She’s pretty much in denial, and it’s obvious she’s going down a desperate path. And then the most unexpected thing knocks her off that path, and she’s drawn into the plans of the mysterious and handsome agent, Ethan Cunning.
The description sparked my interest from the start. I was intrigued, hoping this would be what I thought it was, a romance/unlikely-spy thriller. Perhaps with some humor. Perhaps with a good dose of danger. I wasn’t disappointed. It had all of that, plus a really believable main character who grows from desperate ex-housewife into confident, self-reliant single mom.
And I think that character arc is what I love the most from this book. Sloane’s obviously never been on her own, and she’s still not convinced she is. I just wanted to shake her at times and say, “Lady, drop him! He’s no good.” But, then Ethan and even the target, mmm, and watching her figure it out and make mistakes, and eventually start making fewer of those, until finally, wow, what an awesome turnaround.
I also like how this is a clean read, but still honest and realistic about sex and desire. And, to be honest, I burst into giggles every time she mentions her hoo-ha’s reaction to something. On that note, I’d have to say that this feels like a read that women, in particular, would enjoy. The issues, the perspectives, the plot, all of it really. But it isn’t mushy, or boring, or full of poignant emotions, or something that’s so woman that it’s sickening. It’s unique, fun, and dangerous, with a touch of romance. It simply resonates. Take out the spy stuff, and it feels like Sloane and her family are real. Her girls, her mother, her housekeeper/friend. I love that.
So yes, overall, I loved this book. It’s a great read, and I would strongly recommend it to folks who enjoy romance, thrills and a bit of inept sleuthing.
I received a free copy of this book from the author via Lola’s Blog Tours so that I could review it on my blog, I read too much!
A hilarious and fast-paced novel! I love the story and how the words flow.
This novel is very engaging, and it’s full of unexpected twists. The way it’s written will leave you thinking about what will happen next.
The plot is good. How a woman tries to bring her family complete again and how she will be put in unexpected moments is really making me read this more. I can’t stop skimming through the texts to figure out what she’ll do. I’ve been waiting for the next scenes as I flipped the following pages and guess what? It never fails to amuse me.
The main character is the kind of woman that really have a significant change since the start. As a woman and a mother, it’s very understandable why she made those decisions. Even if she feels uncertain of the future, she still manages to try it out. The other characters are also excellent and well-written. Ethan, Claudia, and even her mother are what makes this novel more funny and enjoyable.
I just feel that the scenes about Ethan were not enough for me and that’s why I only give this four stars, but I’m telling you that this is one of the best novels.
Overall, this is a delightful read that will never fail you to smile or even laugh. This is recommended to everyone who loves a Romantic Suspense story.
Disclaimer: I received a reader copy from the author via Masquerade Book Tours.
A fantastic start to a new series by a debut author. I am seriously impressed by this author's wit and finesse with this story. Although there is suspense and some grittier parts, I was smiling throughout 90% of the story. I absolutely loved Sloane and her self-induced "hot mess" of a life. Between trying to get her ex-husband back, her hot and cold feelings for Ethan the "IRS agent," and being romantically pursued by the shady CEO of Varela Global, Sloane's life only gets more messy and incessantly more fun. I was in love with Ethan from the start and could see that he was just as enamored with Sloane and her quirky behavior. That only endeared me to him more. As the story progresses, Sloane may still be a bit of a "hot mess," but her confidence and strength soars. The mystery and light suspense are written well and there are just enough romantic entanglements to keep me invested. I enjoyed how the story ended, but really wanted more of Ethan. I'm very interested in seeing how future books play out, since major players from this book live in England, as well as the U.S. I'm, also, committed to following this continuing series. Or, at least, hope that it continues. Note: this story does not end on a cliffhanger, but instead ends with obvious clues to a continuing series.
I received a copy of A Cunning Plan from Netgalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
I loved A Cunning Plan by Astrid Arditi, and I cannot wait to read more from this series! This book was humorous, sweet, and packed full of action! I stayed up into the wee hours to finish the last few chapters of the book. It really grabs you. I absolutely adored Sloane! The only times I didn't like her was when she was adamant on getting her ex-husband back, but I understand why she was that way. Her daughters were a cute addition to the story, and very believable.
One of my favorite characters was Claudia, she had a very zany personality. Ethan was great, snarky in parts and caring in others. The heat level wasn't too much and there wasn't any instant lust between them which I liked. Ethan and Sloane definitely had chemistry right off the bat.
Some of the things Sloane does are priceless, and I could see myself doing in the same situation. She was clumsy too, which was a plus.
I received this copy from Lola's Blog Tours in return for my honest review.
Words can't describe how much I loved this book! In Astrid Arditi's debut novel we're introduced to Sloane Harper a recent divorcee who's desperate to put her family back together. When the story starts we discover Sloane is "staking out" not "stalking" her (ex)husband Tom's mistress. I enjoyed how the author lead us on a journey of Sloane's self-discovery and how important it is to stand on your own two feet. Can't wait to read the next installment in the series...
I strongly recommend this book to those who love a crime thriller/mystery because this book has it all.
Sloane is 32, mother of two lovely girls, has followed her husband from the US to London and was totally surprised when Tom suddenly wanted and got a divorce. Convinced Tom will change his mind and get back to his family she is upset to find he has a girlfriend, Kate. She is sitting in her car near Kate's house when she is approached by IRS agent Ethan Cunning, requesting her help. He wants Sloane to spy on Kate's boss Varela.
As I read on, I was constantly changing my mind about Sloane. I was annoyed at her stubborn dedication to jerk Tom, even when he treats her like shit and flaunts his girlfriend. At least Ethan made her change her ways a bit, made her think. The middle part of the story was a bit confusing sometimes, I could not always understand Sloane's reasoning. But it made for an entertaining read and I will be on the lookout for the next and more Ethan.
I loved this book! Combining chick lit with kick ass detective story, a laugh-out-out rollercoaster of domesticity, danger, sass, and steam, all wrapped around an imaginative premise and great writing.
*full disclosure: Astrid and I are signed to the same publisher and I received a review copy in return for an honest review*
I won a copy of A Cunning Plan written by Astrid Arditi from Goodreads. Sloane Harper is divorced as her ex-husband was having an affair with Kate Stapleton. However, she is determine to win him back. They have 2 daughter’s and she seems to think if she is always pleasant to him when he picks up the girls for his weekends and is always dressed perfectly when he arrives, he is eventually going to come to his senses. Her mother has come to stay with her for awhile to help her get her life back on track and everytime Tom shows up she is very pleasant towards him, which seems to reinforce Sloane’s she is at fault and she should have been a better wife. She is approached by IRS agent Ethan Cunning to help her nail Kate Stapleton’s playboy boss. During the entire adventure Sloane’s character grows to the point she realizes she really doesn’t want or need Tom back in her life and when Kate Stapleton dumps him, he tries hitting on Sloane saying he is going to move back home. Imagine his surprise when she tells him to get lost. This is a fun read and you find yourself giving a cheer when Sloane tells the jerk to get lost.
A CUNNING PLAN by Astrid Arditi a Sloane Harper series. Sloane is staking out her ex husband mistress, why because she still loves him. She was agreeable with the divorce, figuring they would remarry. Even after finding out about the mistress, was in picture long before divorce. Makes you wonder what she is thinking, and wasting the time. A stranger gets into her car, and says he's from the government. He wants her help, oh, for the chance to prove myself, she thinks, but she says no. She's a mother, 2 teen age girls. Delightful plot full of humor, and the mix up, Sloane and her friends get into. Good debut book, and looking for more by her.
This was a fun listen to on audio. It moved along at a good pace, with characters you could imagine and mostly like. It was amusing and entertaining and although a little daft in places, with the way the character of Sloane Harper had been portrayed you could imagine these things happening to her. I will definitely be looking out for the next in the series.
Great debut for this author, this romance is funny, full of humor and with a little of action and espionage. Sloane doesn't accept the end of her marriage: Tom was a good husband, they have two wonderful daughters and can't finish because of a woman, Kate. To recover her husband she decides to stalkerare Kate making true stakeouts under her house. But Kate is also spied by IRS agent Ethan Cunning: he actually wants to fit her boss, Gabriel. Ethan and Sloane agree to work together to get both what they want but can be very dangerous. I liked Sloane, she wants her perfect family and is willing to do anything to get it back. Ethan is really sexy and charming, hard to resist him. I also loved Claudia, her looking Au Pair Polish. Their stalking are truly exhilarating. This novel is brilliant, well-written, a perfect mix of mystery and chick lit. A quick fast-paced read that keeps you enthralled and engrossed throughout the book. I can't wait to read the sequel If you are looking for a fun, easy read romantic mystery, I would recommend this book. I received an advanced readers copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
Give me more Sloane! She was funny, charming, sweet, and just a bit crazy. I mean, stalking your ex’s new squeeze may sound serious, but trust me she wasn’t psycho. She was just insecure and thought with all her heart that she could win over her husband again. With two girls to take care of and just a little bit, or should I say, a lot of free time to herself, she had no choice but to stalk. The reader catches on that she is well to do. It’s all a little upper class shenanigans, but I felt that she had true problems. I hated her ex. It was obvious he was using her to pump up his nasty ego. Parading his relationship with his girlfriend in front of her and waltzing into Sloane’s house whenever he wanted. That really pissed me off. At both Sloane and her ex husband. She allowed it and he took advantage of it. The term desperate comes up a bit in this story when referring to Sloane and it might have actually been true. I sided with Sloane, even when at times I wanted to shake some sense into her. In comes the intrigue and suspense! Ethan! A sexy mysterious agent who sees Sloane as a way to help his investigation. At times a bit jerky, and I did question the romantic aspect of their relationship. It was a bit hate/love (Lot’s of hate on Sloane’s end with a bit of underlying attraction). So it wasn’t a cutesy love story. But their interactions with each other was funny and edgy.
Sloane ends up using her stalker abilities for a more serious situation and it was really fun to read.
This was a new-to-me author. But let me say that I tremendously enjoyed her storytelling and dialogue. I love stories that make me laugh and make me feel for the lead character. Sloane was kooky but had real life problems. She did grow as a character and finally comes to her senses. I can’t wait for more Sloane!
Recently divorced Sloane Harper is obsessed with her ex-husband, Tom’s mistress, Katherine Stappleton. Tom takes every possible opportunity to rub Sloane’s face in how successful, rich and virile-in-bed Katherine is, leading to Sloane’s every spare moment being spent staking out her nemesis’ workplace. No matter what it takes, Sloane is determined that someday soon, Tom will come back to his family. While pondering this delusion, Sloane is stunned back to reality when a stranger climbs into the passenger’s seat of her car, pulling the door closed behind him and staring at her. In a panic, Sloane assaults him with the remains of her daughter’s chocolate chip cookie which is stuck to her leg. Both shocked and amused, Agent Ethan Cunning introduces himself and requests Sloane’s assistance in bringing down one of London’s most notorious crime lords, Gabriel Varela, who also happens to be Katherine’s boss. Initially, Sloane refuses to help, worried that it might put her children in danger, but after Katherine threatens to have Sloane’s children taken away from her, Sloane reaches breaking point. Deciding to stop being everybody’s emotional boxing bag, Sloane steps up to the challenge of taking Katherine’s boss down, determined to destroy Katherine’s life in the process. Notifying Ethan of her plan, Sloane dives in head-first and goes out on a date with Gabriel Varela, but when he tells Sloane that he knows everything about her spying ways, she finds herself far deeper in over her head than she could have ever imagined.
Astrid Arditi’s entertaining tale of indecision, bullying, infidelity and growth was most definitely what the doctor ordered. Filled with fun and suspense throughout, A Cunning Plan details a jilted and desperate divorcee’s life, with her ex-husband filling her every obsession. For six months, Sloane stalks her ex-husband’s mistress, firmly believing that he will come back to her. With the introduction of an IRS Agent and a Columbian crime lord, jealousy suddenly fills Sloane’s life from all directions, like bumpers on a crowded pinball table. I loved the main character’s realization that she is worth more than she has ever given herself credit for, and that her future is what she proactively makes it, not simply what she sits back and hopes for. As Sloane’s confidence shines through, so does the romantic interests of the two new men in her life, making this a game of cat-and-mouse where each step catapults the player into a world of trickery, lust, love and romance. I very much enjoyed every page of A Cunning Plan and recommend it to readers over the age of 15 who enjoy their mind-swirling thrill of suspense, romance, action, frustration and humor.
Astrid Aditi's, A Cunning Plan really was a book of two halves, for me. There were times in the reading of it, especially in the first half, when I felt bogged down and unwilling to continue. The plot seemed almost comical and unlikely requiring a significant suspension of belief.
As with almost every book I read, I determined to persevere until the end. If there's one thing I hate, it is giving up on a read. I can count on the fingers of one hand the total number of books I've failed to finish over the years. In the case of A Cunning Plan, persevering was well worth the effort. As the plot unfolded and the little twists began to play out, I got caught up in this tale following the adventures of neurotic housewife Sloane Harper.
Sloane, cheated on and divorced by her husband, has been on an all-out mission to win her ex-husband back from his lover, for the sanctity of her family and her two little girls. Children need their father and I need my husband is her mantra. A chance encounter with a supposed IRS Agent takes Sloan on a trip into the criminal underworld and trans-national crime in London. Her adventures, from that point on rocket along at a great pace.
I do particularly like Arditi's writing style. It is light, breezy and perfectly suited to this type of frothy romantic comedy. One thing I particularly enjoyed about her main character was the voyage of self-discovery she was on in this story. We watched her development from a neurotic, self-deprecating, doormat into a confident, determined and successful woman, who finally knew what she wanted from life.
As a "rom-com", this book succeeds very well. The humor Aditi injects into her words is, at times, genuinely funny. The female characters in this story; her Mother Bizzy and her housekeeper Claudia are larger than life and very funny at times.
If you like romantic-comedy, I know you will like this book. As I said, it was a little bit of a struggle for me initially, but one I was very glad I pushed through. This is a fun read and it left me wondering; what next for Sloane? and What about Ethan? Any author who can make a reader search for a possible sequel has done his or her job well. In the end, I enjoyed A Cunning Plan and happily award it the four stars I felt it deserved. Check this one out, you won't be sorry you did.
5*** Fast-paced crossover between romantic comedy and spy novel
** I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**
In the name of honesty, I must say I’m not a big fan of spy/cozy mystery books. I’ve read some, but I’m not big on them. Also, as a writer of erotic romances, I prefer reading stories with a higher level of heat in the love scenes. Still, I totally enjoyed A Cunning Plan. So that must give you an idea of how good it is since a ‘non-converted’ such as myself liked the story so much, right? Granted, it took me a while to warm up to Sloane. Funnily enough, the very characteristics that make her so realistic were the ones that annoyed me the most: her low self-esteem, her fixation on her cheating ex-husband, and her clumsiness. Yet, like I said, they made perfect sense for her character. Moreover, Sloane evolves so much during the story that you can’t avoid empathizing with her and cheering her on. It’s a great example of character development. Speaking of which, Astridi Arditi displays awesome writing skills for a debut author. It’s not easy achieving her level of quality in character development right off the bat as she’s done. Kudos! With Rose and Poppy, for example, she captured their children’s perspective so well. one Sloane comes home one night and goes to their room to kiss them goodnight, you can almost hear Poppy’s giggles welcoming their mom and Rose’s whispers telling Poppy to be quiet as they weren’t supposed to be up. They are two of my favorite characters, by the way. As for writing style, Ms. Arditi’s elegant descriptions are detailed without being tiresome. The pace is fast since there’s so much going on in the story. You won’t have time to think about putting it down. Luckily, read it over Labor Day weekend because I wouldn’t be able to stop it and do my regular job otherwise. LOL The plot is engaging and keeps you turning the pages to know what comes next. Even when what comes next is a bit predictable, it makes sense in the context of the story.
Favorite line – “I’ll find you”. As I don’t write spoilers, I won’t say why that’s my favorite; but you’ll understand when you read the book. LOL
Determined to win back the father of her two children, Sloane Harper begins to stakeout Kate, her husbands mistresses work place. During this tiresome endeavor she comes face to face with the charming and, at times, annoying, Ethan Cunning. Taking advantage of Sloane and her desperate attempts to spy, Ethan gives her a new target. Gabriel Varela, the attractive yet dangerous business man. Sloane accepts the challenge hoping it would bring back her ex husband, Tom. While staking out Kate's work place she is confronted by Gabriel, once telling him that she and Kate are friends he brings her into the building to see her.Sloane begins to think that Ethan is wrong about Gabriel being the bad man he thinks he is. While living the life of a spy, Sloane is thrown into a tornado of men and emotions. All she knows is that the men in her life are hiding things from her.
This book had just about everything you would need in a book. Clumsy main character, check. Quirky and tiny best friend that is small but feisty, check. Steamy makeout sessions, check. Possible illegal operations, check. Chases in boatyards and guns, check.
When I first began this novel, I couldn't look past Sloane's unyielding yet annoying determination to win Tom back, she reminded me very much of a broken record. I was able to put all of that aside once Ethan popped up though. Through this story you will see Sloane turn from a meek and naive woman to a karate doing hair spray wielding bad ass. I highly suggest thins book to whoever enjoys a light read or just looking to be whisked away on an adventure!
I loved the book “A Cunning Plan” by Astrid Arditi. The story follows Sloane Harper who is recently divorced but still madly in love with her scumbag ex-husband. Sloane is approached by an IRS agent name Ethan Cunning, who convinces her to help spy on her ex-husband’s new girlfriend’s boss. She did not count on possibly falling for the boss. This helps Sloane to discover who she is what she really wants in life.
In “A Cunning Plan”, Arditi mixes romance with humor and a side of adventure. This recipe was the perfect combination and the reason I enjoyed this book so much. Sloane was a very likeable character. Sloane had great chemistry with everyman she came in contact with. At first I thought she was going to be annoying because of her weird obsession with her ex. Those feelings for her quickly changed as I read on. It was actually the “cookie incident” that had me laughing out loud that changed my perspective of her. The “whore incident” was another thing that had me spitting out my drink. That was a good reminder to watch out what you say around children. Arditi also taught me what a WASP is. I was surprised how the book actually ended. I was expecting something totally different. However I thought the ending was perfect.
I really hope that this is not the end of Sloane Harper. I would love to see more books about this accidental spy. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys funny romance books. *I reviewed this book for Readers' Favorite
“A Cunning Plan” by Astrid Arditi is the first story in the ‘Sloane Harper’ series and follows her as she tries to cope with her husband’s betrayal and searches for a way to get him away from his mistress. A mysterious man, Ethan Cunning, tries to convince her to assist him in an investigation, and their odd connection complicates her life even more. Can her quirky best friend pseudo-housekeeper, her less-than-demonstrative mother, or her husband give her a reason to move forward or is she will she get what she thinks she truly wants?
This contemporary story blends wry humor with suspense and adds a bit of soul searching, character growth, and romance. The wacky situations Sloane gets herself into become almost slapstick and the gradually unfolding mystery highlights her naivete, resilience, and allure for those around her. I love the entertaining situations and adored the children but I wasn’t so fond of either of the main characters because their vacillation was frustrating to me and the ending wasn’t as defined as I would like, although I presume that things will pick up again in the sequel. Those in search of an amusing lighthearted mystery will undoubtedly enjoy the madcap adventures of Sloane Harper.

“A Cunning Plan” was such a lovely read, I’m still wearing a smile on my face while writing this. It had just a perfect balance of humor, mystery, action and of course a big deal of character growth and self-discovery. The protagonist Sloane is so real that she doesn’t even feel like a book character. All her shortcomings, indecisiveness, and insecurity of a freshly-divorced wife who spends a great deal of her time stalking her ex’s new girlfriend, quickly get replaced by the need for change, as she tries to get her husband back but instead ends up finding her new self. All the supporting characters, starting with a feisty Polish housekeeper Claudia to Bizzy, Sloane’s mother, to Sven, an insecure underwear model slash kung-fu trainer, bring their own magic to the story, and there was never a dull moment with them. The mysterious Ethan, a supposed IRS agent, who comes to the UK to hunt down a shady multimillionaire and asks for Sloane’s help with his secret operation, was another treat. I loved every single one of their encounters, which were both awkward, funny, but also oh so sweet that I couldn’t help but root for a happy ending for them. I won’t give anything else away, just read this book. Definitely one of my favorites now!
I really enjoyed this book. Romantic comedy is one of my favorite genres so I was pleased to have the chance to read the book. I think the reason I enjoyed it so much is because of the heroine. I was hooked when she was straightening out her panties in the car (she was in the car because she was stalking her ex-hubands's new girlfriend) and looked up to find a strange man watching her. Ordinarily I don't guess it would make any difference what he saw, but in this case she's going to have a whole lot more interaction with him.
I also loved the housekeeper who hung out with our heroine when she was stalking the girlfriend. The ex-husband: so not worth the stalking or heartache.
Of course, there are some pretty tense moments in the book too, but I'll let you discover those for yourself. Just be aware that when you read the last couple of lines in the book, you're gonna smile.
I was given this book with the promise of an honest review
Oh boy this book was so good and funny, maybe even a guide of what not to do when you find out you are divorced and want you ex back. Don't follow his current woman, do not get embroiled in schemes that will send you hurdling into danger, but meanwhile it will help you find yourself with the aid of super good friends like Claudia, Swen, and even good ole Ethan you is getting you involved where you should not be, and meanwhile you just crave him and even Gabriel the bad bad boy. After reading the book, I wish I had it as a example of what to do and not do when my ex left exit stage left, but the trials of Sloane were funny they made me laugh and worry about her specially when she got into more scrapes one could. The book was well written, lite reading and full of unexpected things.
