Blade Squadron - Part II

Rate this book
"Blade Squadron" is a two-part short story written by David J. Williams and Mark S. Williams that appeared in Star Wars Insider 149 and Star Wars Insider 150. It was inspired by artwork depicting an unused battle scene from Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and the story focuses on an elite squadron of B-wing starfighters on a suicide mission during the Battle of Endor.

Descended from Australian convicts, David J. Williams nonetheless managed to be born in Hertfordshire, England, and subsequently moved to Washington D.C. just in time for Nixon’s impeachment. Graduating from Yale with a degree in history some time later, he narrowly escaped the life of a graduate student and ended up doing time in Corporate America, which drove him so crazy he started moonlighting on video games and (as he got even crazier) novels.

The Autumn Rain trilogy sold to Bantam Spectra in the summer of 2007; the release of THE MACHINERY OF LIGHT in May of 2010 completes the series.

This is the second part of a short story. This picks up right where the first one ended so that should be read first. This continues the story of Blade Squadron and their part of the Rebel attack on the Death Star at Endor.

I thought the second story was a step down from the first story. That actually might not be fair as it really is one continuous story. And this would have been better served if it was connected to the first story. The first story was a dive into the characters who are Blade Squadron. This one was the action part of the story so there really wasn't a lot of depth. I did like how the author entwines this story with the attack of the Death Star that we viewed on the movie screen. It shows that it truly is a team effort and not just our heroes named Solo, Skywalker, and Organa. There are many other people that make the attack successful.

I do like this story and I do like these characters. Actually my biggest complaint about this series is that is wasn't expanded enough to have a full dive into these characters. There is something here that I would have enjoyed exploring. These are very quick reads that I wish there was a little more.

I really enjoy reading about Blade Squadron. This was the second part of their fight in the Battle of Endor. I really enjoy this alternative perspective on the battle.

This is a review for both parts.
The attempt was made to fit quite much into this short story, but as is, it did not manage to really convey much. It tells the story of several characters on both sides of the conflict befor and during the battle of Endor, yet it neither manages to really introduce the characters, nor does it retell the complete battle from their point of views. In its defence it at least manages to tell the two-sided story of the final hours of Vader's ex flagship, but there is not enough here, to really connect to the legacy of that ship or its crew. So instead of wasting time on the doomed, the story could have concentrated more on the good guys. Maybe we will be seeing Blade Squadron in future books as secondary characters and these short stories will be laying a foundation for us the care more about them. Even though we know the final outcome of that battle, we do not get to know the exact fate of Blade Squadron, at least not in what was published on starwars.com, so this two-parter leaves us uncomfortably hanging.
