Dragon Forged: Chronicles of Dragon Aerie

Rate this book
In the long desert, civilization doesn’t run according to any rule, and Wylan Atwater is about to learn that the hard way. Her first circuit as a member of the dragon guard is a simple one--get a feel for the land, find any survivors of the dragon plague that she can, and bring them back to the ramshackle haven of Darubai. But a sandstorm and magic wielding drakes destroy those plans. Injured, far from safety, and without the use of her ability to shift into a wyvern, Wylan isn’t sure she will survive to see another day, let alone loved ones and the tenuous safety of home ever again. Filled with dragon battles, mysterious magic attacks, and a hopeless quest that holds a glimmer of hope for Darubai, Dragon Forged continues the story of Wylan Atwater, and her need to find a purpose in her cursed life.

Travis Simmons was kicked out of magic school because he enjoyed mundane habits like canning and cooking instead of using spells. Forced to travel the world selling his sword and (often defunct) sorcery, he stumbled upon a pack of normal dogs that he mistook for magical animals and imagined he could communicate with them. Still, they enjoyed the pizza he would toss their way, and they adopted him as one of their own. When a roving horde of zombies attacked his new family, Travis used all of his abilities to call upon aid from some witch friends who helped him fight the undead horde. But, always the introvert, the witches realized Travis was rather boring, so after the excitement of battle was over, they went back to their magical ponderings elsewhere. But alas, Travis Simmons was bitten by a zombie, and in order to save himself from turning, he became an apprentice to a necromancer who promised to teach him necromancy and cure his impending undead affliction for a hefty sum. Deciding the life of adventure wasn’t for him, and worried that winter was coming, Travis settled down with his dark master and started writing weird tales of fantasy and science fiction. While his master much preferred Travis spend his time learning the esoteric ways of the occult, Travis dreamed of things like aliens, and life on other planets. His master didn’t like when Travis started pondering steampunk, and instead made his life a horror with magical studies. Now he spends his time chasing his dreams, while trying to save himself from the demon virus in his blood.

Dragon Forged is young adult fantasy book and third in the Plague Born -series but can be read as a stand-alone just as I did.

The story has multiple POV's and at times it made the reading a bit difficult although I think that my lack of English skills were more to blame this time.

I found the storyline interesting and I was very intrigued by the world building. Dragon plague has swept through the land and most of the humans are either killed or turned into wyverns. There are four kinds of wyverns; red, yellow, blue and green and they differ from each other by the magic they posses. There are also dragons, elves, dwarfs and drakes, so the fantasy cast is all there.

Wylan Atwater is a red wyvern and her first circuit is nothing what she expects. What was supposed to be routine duty turns into a dangerous quest to find the enemy within her own people. It also reveals many hidden truths and the world will never be the same again.

The main character for mewas Leaghan, a wizard in learning. She plays an important role towards the end of the book and I surely would like to read more of her in the future.

This is a story of what happens to a society when you let fear take over and what happens to its people, when the powers to be dictate everything and hide the truth. And it's a story about finding courage and being true to oneself. And a story of friendship and love and acceptance. So, not only has this story multiple POV's, it also has many dimension.

The reason I couldn't give this book five stars was that at times it was too detailed, to a point that it affected the story flow and almost made me skip scenes. And the problem that everyone, who writes multiple POV's; none of the characters reach their full potential as they have to share the page time with others.

This was a very enjoyable story. I won't ruin the book by telling you spoilers but will tell you that this was a very engaging story. Although it is book 3 it can be read alone and the story makes perfect sense. I however am going to go back and read the other 2 books just because I want to know more about the events and people that shape this story. Well done Travis!
