Victor Olegovich Pelevin is a Russian fiction writer. His books usually carry the outward conventions of the science fiction genre, but are used to construct involved, multi-layered postmodernist texts, fusing together elements of pop culture and esoteric philosophies. Some critics relate his prose to the New Sincerity and New Realism literary movements.

Akiko by Victor Pelevin

Read with the "Paper Wings" short story club.

A satirical commentary on internet privacy, online scamming, and usage of porn sites.

I’m not well versed in Pelevin, so I probably missed a bunch of references to his other stuff with flavors of Buddhist philosophy, but from this detached standpoint I don’t find the story that much interesting. Pelevin handles the comedic part very well, a few jokes defo made me laugh outloud, but the core of the story didn’t feel like it was providing a new, engaging outlook on the problem. It also lacked a lot of Pelevin’s defining elements I enjoyed in his other, bigger works.

So, yeah, a nice entry to have a couple of laughs and that’s it.
