Slappy is Back!

In the book, Night of the Living Dummy 2, Slappy is back and he is still up to his usual mayhem.

This time he is with a different family and he has a different life experience and a different story to tell. But he has the same kind of antics as before.

Sara, Amy and Jed are the children of Slappy’s new kingdom, and as far as he is concerned they are his very own slaves. As he is fond of reminding them.

Amy is the one who is the best one at handling Slappy. Unfortunately, Slappy doesn’t like her jokes and he lets everyone know it. He has fun insulting her mother and her father. He hurts their feelings and gets Amy into trouble.

But no one believes that Slappy is capable of doing anything on his own. They all believe that Slappy is innocent. So they believe that Amy is the one who is guilty of the things that are coming out of his mouth.

But Amy has plans to trap Slappy. She is going to make sure that Slappy pays for what he says out of his own mouth.

Four stars. 💫💫💫💫

#31 "He's still walking. He's still stalking."
Amy is not happy with her ventriloquist dummy. He is old and keeps losing his head. So her father decides to buy her a new ventriloquist dummy from a local pawn shop. The dummy turns out to be none other than Slappy!!!! Horrible things start happening as Amy realizes that there is more to this ventriloquist dummy than meets the eye.

The heavy fist hit me square in the forehead.

My face felt as if it had exploded. Pain shot down my body.

Everything went bright red.

And, holding both sides of my head, I crumpled to the floor.

This book contains some of the best writing I've seen from Goosebumps. Stine actually takes the time to set up a plot and characters. Also, he's working with what is perhaps the scariest Goosebumps invention: Slappy, the living dummy.
...

Amy Kramer is 12, and has a pretty crazy family. Her dad is a bald ex-hippie who thinks he can sing (he's tone deaf) and is under the impression that he is a master of Chinese cooking (he's terrible). He also insists that the family sit down together every Thursday night for "Family Sharing Night," which is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. Everyone in the family has to do a show-and-tell. Amy's mom is a chubby woman who works in a fancy women's clothes store in the city.

Amy has two siblings:

- An older sister (age 14) named Sara who is a straight A student and a wonderful painter. She tends to be a little full of herself.

- A younger brother (age 10) named Jed. This little redheaded brat goes around vandalizing Sara's paintings and making fun of both his siblings. He's unpleasant, spoiled, and thinks he's cute and funny.

The fact that I can even make character descriptions of this family is a sign that Stine is working at a higher level than normal here. Stine spends a whole 4 chapters of introducing them before Slappy even appears.

Amy is a cool kid who loves Bob Marley and reggae music. (Her best friend Margo listens exclusively to The Beatles. Stine is great at giving kids some cool quirks.) She collects seashells. She also has the unfortunate hobby of ventriloquism, which negates any coolness previously established. LOL She has an old, worn-out dummy named Dennis who is falling apart and frequently loses his head - literally. She has been bugging her father to get her a new dummy, but new dummies are expensive.

However, one day her father comes home with Slappy - a dummy that the store owner seemed eager to get rid of, for some reason. Amy is very excited with the new doll and thanks her father. Then Slappy slaps her father hard across the face.

It's begun! Slappy does horrible things, and Amy is blamed for them. When she sits down to act with him, he calls her mom fat and makes fun of her dad's bald head. At one point he grabs onto a three-year-old girl's hand and almost breaks it. Amy is in tears trying to explain that she's not the one doing these hateful things, but of course no one believes her.

Then Slappy starts sneaking out of her room at night and vandalizing her house. Her parents start to talk about taking her to a psychiatrist, and she is very ostracized by her family.

I feel like this is genuine and true horror. Hateful acts are being done against your loved ones and everyone thinks you are responsible. No one believes your protests and denials. Then you are lined up to perhaps end up in an institution because people think you've lost your mind. It's creepy stuff.

Then, things get even creepier and more physical when Slappy starts to talk to Amy. He calls her his slave and demands that she obey his every command, or else he'll continue his stealth attacks on her family.

No matter how many times Slappy pulls this "I am your master" crap on children, he never fails to be surprised when they don't meekly become his slaves. The children always decide to fight back! Slappy is a moron.

Anyway, fighting with a dummy is seriously creepy. He packs a powerful punch and is surprisingly strong. Images like this - a dummy grabbing your wrist hard, slapping you in the face, scurrying and slithering across your bedroom floor with an evil grin on his face - are truly terrifying and stick with you.

Tl;dr - A great book, one of the strongest entries in the Goosebumps series. Actually contains non-cardboard characters and delivers on the chills.

P.S. The pet in this book is George the cat.

P.P.S. OMG You can buy a Slappy here: http://ventriloquistworld.com/product...
In case you want to super creep people out, I guess!

Confession time: Even though Slappy is one of Goosebumps iconic characters, these Night of the Living Dummy books were never my favourites.

This one is the best of the original trilogy though, Slappy more of the action in this one.
It feels slightly similar to the previous one as Amy a ventriloquist enthusiasts and Sara an artist showcase their skills every Thursday night.
When Sara’s paintings get vandalised, Amy is instantly blamed.
But what if it was the dummy?

I really like the family dynamics in this book, it’s one of the few Goosebumps books that tackle more mature subjects like counselling and mental health.

It wasn't written as well as some of the other stories, but it definitely gave me goosebumps! Dummies really freak me out, and this story totally creeped me out. If you feel like a bit of a scare I'd recommend this book.

Night of the Living Dummy II is the 31st book in the Goosebumps series. It is a little fun, a tad creepy, with a little mystery and action. Loved it.

I am re-reading this series for nostalgic reasons.

The Goosebumps series was a staple in our house. My kids absolutely loved them, and to say I read these books with them once is an understatement. We read them many times as each of my three kids became old enough to read them. They still have them and are getting to read them with their kids.

There were lots of things I didn't like about this book. It's not really a sequel, for starters. There is no continuation from the previous book and, in fact, makes it a little confusing. How did Slappy turn inanimate again? I do understand, though, that these books are written for kids and, as such, shouldn't have to be read in order. Amy's relationship with her family was frustrating and the thing with Sara made me mad. The ending was the only thing I liked about the book and I wished it had played a bigger part.

So we get to the second book with Slappy and all I can think is, "If this book was for older kids then this dummy would definitely be stabbing people instead of painting words on walls in the middle of the night. " BUT this is what will enable young readers to think of those WHAT IF moments for themselves as they get older and then realize just how scary Slappy and dolls can really be! There's a reason there are still so many horror movies centered around these tiny terrors. R.L. Stine did it again, but way back in 1995! 4 stars!

I know I read this when it was new, but I didn’t remember any of it on this re-read. That said, I think this is actually a better book than the original. Frankly, you don’t even really need to have read the first book to fully appreciate this one as the only real holdover is Slappy.

This time out, we’re following the middle child, Amy, who wants to get work as a ventriloquist. Her current dummy is broken, though, so she needs a new one. Enter Slappy! And, of course, the magical words that unknowingly bring him to life. But will her parents believe that it’s Slappy ruining her big sister’s paintings and not her? Of course not!

My only real complaint with this one is how quickly Stine tries to wrap things up. The story is moving at a normal pace until the last 30 pages when he decides it’s time to be done. At least that’s how it felt. The last moments just happen so quickly that it feels like he forgot he only had 120ish pages to complete the story, so the conclusion is just “we had this plan, and it worked”, and little else.

Still, I liked the characters well enough, and there were some genuinely creepy moments with Slappy that I thought were done quite well. As I mentioned, this one holds up better than the original and has me excited for part three!

Night of the Living Dummy 2 is safe to say a superior sequel and more iconic compared to the first Dummy book with the fact that Slappy who is literally the main icon of all Goosebumps (now with the movies and even got his own spinoff series dedicated to him) is the main focus of this book and he did a lot of trouble here compared to the low level Mr Wood, and he ain't even active in that book for like 5 pages and what makes this book superior is first, Slappy in here is brutal, likes to sabotage the main character and also, the other characters are really good too, I liked the family aspect that is done here, the elder sister, parents are just developed so well (except for the little brother, Jed, he's kind of a jerk). for some reason they have more life given into them in this book than most parents compared to other Goosebumps books for the sake of having a family. even though it still has that you gotta believe me trope, the family aspect just stands out and I like how they were incorporated at the end. definetly unique for a Goosebumps book.

Overall, Really enjoyed this, probably the best one out of all the Slappy books

Okay, so it's not The Brothers Karamazov, but how much of the literature I read is actually literary?

Night of the Living Dummy II is classic Goosebumps and that is pretty impressive when you give R. L. Stine his due. Here is a man who has written hundreds tails of terror, knows how to make genuinely suspenseful scenes, and keeps it clean enough and nonviolent enough for third graders.

In Night of the Living Dummy II, a budding ventriloquist finds the tables turned on her when she discovers her new dummy has an evil mind of its own. Don't worry, this is not a hacker/slasher homicidal dummy, Slappy is something of a vandal, that's all.

Chucky's back! As I read this book I kept picturing the doll from the Child Play movies. Not as good as the first book. Slappy doesnt say much to other people, that was the best part in my opinion, seeing what he'd do and say to other people. He didn't do much of that in this book. I guess R.L had writers block or couldn't figure out what to have him say. I think the book ended too quickly. 120 pages is good but I felt there wasn't enough "action" with the dummy. Still a cool book, makes me want to watch Child's Play movies much more. Heh I think I know what I'll be for Halloween!

The second half of this book was what kept it at a four star for me, but this family is one dysfunctional mess that had me rolling my eyes through the first half. All the families in these books are dysfunctional, but this one was the worst by far.

I'm glad to see that this was a sequel that's finally not the same characters, besides Slappy of course. I couldn't deal with another retcon moment, just for the same family to do something dumb and re-encounter Slappy for a second time. I still don't think a sequel was necessary, as it was the same premise, just a different family. But at least it was better than other sequels. I know there's...four? I think four of these Slappy books. I have a feeling my ratings for them will steadily drop from this point. How many times are we going to see the same thing happen to a different family (or the same family)?

There were actually some new elements to this book that changed up the typical tried and true formula Stine books follow. SOME. Most of the elements were the same still.
