A Christmas obligation, a wreath of mistletoe, and Reid Chillendale has to find a bride or break with centuries of tradition. His family is responsible for the ale reputed to be the best in England and Reid’s heart lies in brewing not wooing. Until one wintery night when his world is turned upside down by a snow-laden branch and a woman who smells of spring.
Lady Prudence Eldridge has come to Chillendale Village with her cousin, and really didn’t expect to find astounding passion flat on his back at her feet. She’s ready, willing and intrigued by this kind man who is so much more than he might appear. His clothes mark him as a gentleman – when he removes them he’s anything but!
There are Christmas Fêtes for the children and a Mistletoe Ball for the adults. There will be carols sung, there will be naked frolicking in the snow, and there will be surprise romances. There will most likely be a Christmas pudding or two for good measure. Reid and Prudence may have found each other, but keeping each other may be a bit more of a Christmas challenge…
I'm really rather boring... Honestly. I live a pretty hum-drum life as a wife and mother. I shop at the local supermarket and use coupons now and again. See? Boring stuff.
I live in Virginia now, so I am learning all kinds of new things - such as being able to buy beer and wine along with bread and toothpaste. Wow!
Having been born and raised in England, I do possess a well-developed feel for the English countryside. Comes in handy for those Regency tales. Even though I was transplanted over to the US side of the Atlantic, I still have ties to all things Brit. I bake sausage rolls and make Christmas pudding. You can take the girl out of England, but not England out of the girl, I guess.
I'm not sure anyone can write really well unless they read. A lot. I read anything and everything these days. And mostly on my couch with a book on my knees. Yes, the technology is out there for electronic versions, but there's not much to compare with a shiny new hardcover from a favorite author.
Good Story with a Fantasy twist...but not to my liking
This book was good for awhile. But the author took the story on a bizarre twist about halfway into the plot. It felt forced...really forced and unreal. The story went from fiction to fantasy and back again. I ended up not finishing the story.
Meh! I didn't care for this story at all. The hero and heroine were flat characters who didn't hold my interest. I didn't get the sense they fell in love at all. They liked having sex together in his childhood clubhouse. She was a widow who wanted some discreet passion. He was a guy who was just being a guy and taking what was freely offered to him.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Christmas novella. It had an interesting and unusual plot and great characters. The hero and heroine experienced a true Christmas miracle to make their union acceptable.
This was a nice side step from the Ridlington series. The story of the folks at Chillendale was interesting. Prudence and Reid are good together. An enjoyable read.
What an amazingly fun quirky romance full of historical traditions and fantastic twists in this wonderful storytelling. Author Sahara Kelly has truly brought about the historical feel of old England in it's glorious traditions that occur in some areas for the Christmas Season. We have all heard the tales of Twelveth Night Festivities, The Yule Log, the Seasonal Hunts. But this author brought us a more simplistic yet festive holiday in her own town of Chillendale. With its sweet and lovely Nativity scenes, rolling Christmas Songs or her descriptive winter scenery and Mistletoe Ball. This story is enchanting from beginning to end. I recommend this to any and all who love Seasonal tales filled with traditions, fun, love and a twist of magic thrown in for good measure. Well done
Excellent storyline peopled with interesting characters
Although this is at heart a Christmas story, it is so much more. The atmosphere and the characters can be enjoyed at any time. The supporting cast lend so much to the plot that everyone is needed to make the story complete.
Reid's first contact with Prudence has such an impact that he later searches for her although he is resigned to marrying Emmaline whom he finds vastly annoying. The widowed Prudence, having endured a distasteful marriage, has no wish to fall into the trap again.
If I had proofread this book, I would have made 19 corrections, none of which involve the English spellings that add the lovely "u" for colour. However, they do include 't'is and 't'was; since only one letter is omitted, they should be 'tis and 'twas. Although not counted among the errors, there is some misuse of titles. Sir Francis Southwick would not be addressed as Lord Southwick but rather as Sir Francis, and his wife would be Lady Mary but not Lady Southwick. Prudence would be Lady Eldridge but never Lady Prudence.
Mistletoe Marquess was a good historical romance read that I enjoyed. It is Reid and Prudence's story. This is my first book by Sahara Kelly and it won't be my last. I liked her writing style and being transported back in history. Reid is obligated to find a bride and announce his decision at the Mistletoe ball. He has no interest in doing so but also doesn't want to disappoint everyone including his parents. Prudence is an widow who doesn't want to be tied down again. Her experience with marriage wasn't that great. When the two of them meet the sparks fly. They are presented with challenges that they must overcome before the two of them can get married. Will they get past themselves, tradition, and everything else that they are up against to find happiness together? Or will both of them end up going their separate ways? I would recommend Mistletoe Marquess to anyone who enjoys historical romances.
A sweet heart wrenching Christmas story. Lady Prudence Eldridge is a widowed woman of a young age. Having no past really to speak of and no family especially a father's sure name. She is married off to a older lord. Now free of him she can do as she pleases. And runs into her cousin after a bout with her dearly departed husband's family over the estate. Reid Chillendales last year of a bachelor is coming to a end. This year he will have to marry a woman whether he wants to or not. And the woman his family wants him to marry, he wants no part of the chit. He has no choice because there is no one else of age or status. Till he meets her.
This was a beautiful story I could not put down! Reid Chillendale has to find a bride or one will be chosen for him as he is the only one to carry on the Mistletoe ball heritage for this year. He is walking in the woods when a tree limb knocks him unconscious, he wakes up to what he thinks is his imagination in the form of a woman with chestnut hair. Lady Prudence Eldridge has come to Chillendale Village with her cousin and finds Reid but then she makes sure he can not find her after she kisses him. Who is she? Will these two get a happy ending?
I was excited to receive this book as I love historical fiction and after reading the first ten pages it held my interest until I didn't even hit the next chapter there was a sexual encounter which can be done tastefully and especially being set in the Regency period I thought would be a little more subtle. Crude words were used for various parts of the anatomy that wouldn't even been known as a word at that time in history and this totally turned me off and I am not a prude. I do not recommend this book at all but I guess to each his own.
I loved this story!!! We have Reid, who is 28 years old; he has to find a wife before the ball. Prudence is a widow, who left everything she has ever known in the past. They fall for each other. I love the mention of Christmas and its decoration. The scenery is beautiful. Kudos to the author!!!
Prefacing this review that I am not a "holiday genre" reader, but I am a fan of the author. This story was very unexpected and I'm impressed. The love that shines in this story was very potent, and I'm not sure if it's because I've read it during the holiday season or if it just got me in the heart. I truly enjoyed this story and all of it's traditions.
The Mistletoe Marquess was one of my favorite of Sahara Kelly's books. It's full of romance, but not overly so. It also has some humor in it, which I associate with Sahara Kelly's writing style and love. I really enjoyed the story line in this book and highly recommend it, especially as a Christmas time romance.
Reid Chillendale would rather make his ale than find his bride, but he's forced to or else break a centuries long tradition. While out riding, he hits his head on a snow laden branch, and meets the woman of his dreams.
Lady Prudence Eldridge has come to visit her cousin in Chillendale Village, but finds quite a handsome gentleman knocked out on the ground in the snow. He is just too much temptation for her and she can't resist his charm.
