"What's this?" he asks, in the derisive tone I know so well.
"101 Natural Cures for Insomnia," I answer with excessive enthusiasm, as if I'm speaking to a five year old.
"I'm sure this is all very thoughtful-"
"Damn straight it is-"
"But I'm perfectly able to manage my problems myself."
"Like hell you can-"
"Ssh," Dillon places a palm over my mouth and his eyes whiz across the print-out in his hand. "Toe-wiggling? You really think my insomnia will be cured if I hone my toe-wiggling skills?"
"Give me that."
I snatch the paper from his hand, just to check he isn't making it up, but sure enough, suggestion No. 8 reads-' according to the ancient science of reflexology, wriggling your toes is a great way to relax your body and energise it at the same time.' I giggle in spite of myself.
"Obviously these are just some ideas, but surely anything's better than driving around while you're on sleeping pills. You'll wind up dead." Dillon lowers his gaze, expression inscrutable and I think that maybe I've gone too far. "Ok, you know what? That's fine. Continue being a bastard to your brother. What's it to me if you have some kind of personality transplant just because you've slept a little bit more?"
Dillon cross his arms, opens his mouth and shuts it abruptly. He jerks his head in the direction behind us and I follow his stare- Kendall is sitting rigid at the keyboard. God, why is that girl always around when I'm meant to be acting like Tyler Dillon's one true love?
"Will you just consider reading it?" I hiss.
We lock each other in a glare. I'm determined not to be the first one to crack so I continue to stare into his hard green eyes until my own start to water. To my surprise, Dillon is the first to look away. "Fine. I'll read your ridiculous list. But wriggling my toes isn't going to change me or my dad or anything, pumpkin."
