Rate this book
In 1943, widowed seamstress Heidi Wetzel finds new meaning in life by caring for evacuated children on a rural farm in war-torn western Germany. Never a supporter of National Socialism, she takes pleasure in passive resistance, but must exercise caution around neighbors who delight in reporting to the Gestapo.

Flying cadet Paul Braedel's wife dies while he trains for the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following bereavement leave, he returns to B-17 "Flying Fortress" Bomber navigator training but he's lost his zest for life and heads to England, not caring if he lives or dies. When he and his crew are shot down over Germany, he evades capture and, for the first time since Rachel's death, hears the voice of God whisper guidance: Find Heidi.

When Heidi stumbles into a man she recognizes, she is shocked to realize he is a friend from her high school days in the United States, and the husband of her best friend Rachel. Aiding an enemy downed airman is punishable by execution, but she agrees to help.

Then they're betrayed.

A war-time adventure with romantic second chances.

Y'all, I have a love/hate relationship with World War 2 novels. I hate them because to think of something so horrid happening in real life blows my mind. That citizens would be blind to what is going on in their own backyard is frightening.

Here's where the love part comes in. Novelists who can weave a tale so intricately, that I forget it's fiction and make me fall in love with their gift of storytelling. Ms. Wangard transported me to western Germany. I experienced the doubt and confusion that Heidi did. German radio reports life one way, allied radios report life another. What is she to believe?

And that's where God steps in. I love how God is the 3rd strand in this novel. Paul has to decide will he trust the God he knew as a young man, or ignore the God he believes took his wife away.

Heidi has to decide if she will be an instrument and tool to help God's people, or buy into the propaganda Nazi and Nazi supporters wish her to believe.

Ms. Wangard takes her time exploring the doubts and confusion people go through during times of war. At the end of the read, I had to ask myself could I handle the life that Heidi and Paul were dealt? Would I have their courage?

Few books can bring tears to my eyes in the very first chapter, but Friends and Enemies drew me in quickly enough to accomplish just that. But this is not your typical boy-meets-girl-they-fall-in-love romance, because more than an ocean separates our hero and heroine.
Paul and Heidi were high school classmates and friends until World War II forced Heidi’s family to return to Germany to manage the family’s factory. Now, as young adults, they find themselves on opposite sides of an ocean, as well as a war. When Paul is forced to bail out from his damaged bomber, his only hope is to find Heidi and pray she’ll help him rather than turn him over to German authorities.
The characters felt real, people I’d like to know personally. I also enjoyed learning what flying in a B-17 was like, and I was impressed with the resourcefulness of Heidi and her friends in finding scarce food and material for clothing, as well as outwitting the German Gestapo and its spies. Consequences for any disobedience to the Nazi regime were dire, and not everyone escaped.
If you enjoy historical romance, especially those set in WWII, I believe you’ll enjoy Friends and Enemies.

A free copy of this book was provided to me in exchange for my honest review. I recommend it and look forward to reading more in the series.

Heidi Wetzel's life changes forever when she receives word that her husband's submarine was sunk and that he was killed. Already wary of the Nazi Party, Heidi has to be careful. Her parents send her to the farm of a family friend to help care for the evacuated children in rural war-torn West Germany. There she finds new life in caring for the children, but still must be careful as neighbors delight in reporting activities to the Gestapo. Paul Braedal's wife dies suddenly while he is training for the US Army's Air Corps. When he returns to duty, he begins training as a navigator having lost his zest for life. Other than causing his parents grief should he be killed, he really doesn't care whether he lives or dies. When he and his crew are shot down over Germany, Paul evades capture and for the first time since his wife's death, clearly hears God's voice telling him to find Heidi. Setting out to find the woman who was the best friend of his late wife, Paul manages to find Heidi. She agrees to help him, and together they come up with a plan to get him to France and then back to England. Yet when they are betrayed, Heidi realizes she must go with him or risk the lives of all she has come to love.

This book was good. It was very easy to read. I thought that it was probably written at a lower level than most WWII books I've read. I honestly wasn't too invested into the characters until about a fourth of the way through. Then I wanted to know more.

It's not the typical WWII book I've come to expect. But that is probably because the author is one who is new to me. She does lace her writing with humor. And her research was well done. I'll probably read the next one in the series.

I received the Kindle version of this book for free from the publisher for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

This historical fiction book kept me waiting for the next page! This honest look into Germany and England during the difficult time period of World War II allows the reader to understand the hardships and living conditions at the time and to see the daily struggle the inhabitants faced. The characters are fully developed--- each one’s personality comes through and I was easily able to visualize them.
The plot and storyline is varied and holds interest; one eagerly anticipates the next chapter as the story unfolds!
The author’s writing style will appeal to readers from young adult to adult. Those who enjoy historical fiction will find the plot and historicity authentic, and faith and the goodness of those willing to help others is the overriding theme. Excellent choice for young male readers; the insight into the war in the air will hold their interest, and readers of all ages will find the story of hope, faith, and the natural goodness of man an uplifting example of well-told story!

Do you love history? Well, you can tell Terri Wangard does. Friends and Enemies is full of WWII history and oft times she makes you feel like you walked into Germany, or into an Allie camp, or are sitting in the seat of a bomber plane. I will warn you the true romance of the story doesn't really start until past the midpoint of the book, but Terri weaves in some great lessons as she goes. A clean, Christian story I'd definitely recommend to someone who is a real lover of history and wants to view WWII from both sides of the lines.

What a insightful look into Germany during World War 2. This historical romance takes place right in the middle of it! Homes bombed, sirens, running for the shelters, the fight of planes in the sky! All told as they are happening. I sometimes found myself holding my breath until all was calm again. Then the devastation these people endured.. The author captured it so well! Suspense, abuse, triumph and a touch of romance! It's going into my "to be read again stack"! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher in exchange for my honest review.

I was interested to hear of this novel because I have a particular interest in the WWII period, particularly aviation related, and have been reading books on the subject since childhood.

The positives:
The story is well told and engaging and the characters are well defined and (mostly) believable. It’s easy and compelling reading, with some grit - some of the descriptive scenes (especially those describing some elements such as the bombing mission from the perspective of Paul in the B-17 being attacked by a fighter, and Heidi who is in a cellar while a different bombing raid takes place over her town) are graphic enough to make you feel the confusion, noise, and horror of the moments. However it is a story which often feels a bit like a ‘lite’ version rather than the full fat variety. It covers the topics of love and loss well, and at several different levels, without being trite at any point. Some threads were left untied, but not enough to be too frustrating! The book does have a faith element, but in the main this is well woven into the story with Paul’s confusion and withdrawal from faith very believable. Rather more so than his reconnection with it later on when stopping to pray in certain situations just seems unlikely in the way described. Though perhaps I am just a bit more heathen than many who will read this!

The less positives:
There are some inaccuracies which jar a bit. The first chapter refers to America as having joined the war two years previously. As the opening scene takes place in May 1943 this is inaccurate, as the US officially joined the war in December 1941 (though was unofficially involved for some time beforehand), meaning the story begins 17 months afterwards, not two years. Paul’s flight in the opening chapter is described as full of aerobatics, but it is then referred to as his first solo. There is absolutely no way he would have been flying any aerobatic manoeuvres at all on a first solo! However, the flying scenes later in the book are much better written in general, so I will forgive this odd lapse at the start.

Parts of the story, especially the section set on the farm, seemed a bit ‘padded’, and some felt very unlikely, such as the hiding in the barn of the rucksack of an SS officer. Something likely to result in very serious trouble for anyone living on the farm if it had been discovered. Some of the elements of Paul and Heidi’s flight out of Germany via the underground escape network also don’t ring true. In particular Paul being given a list of contacts which he then carries on his person, as well as some of the other events described as taking place during their escape. When Heidi says ‘going to England will be worth it just to avoid being under the bombs again’ I do wonder what the author thought was actually happening in England during WWII! This English reader also found a couple of comments made within the story about the approaches of the USAF and RAF heavy bomber squadrons rather disparaging and the implication made are not accurate. Oh, and the map at the beginning says ‘England’ right across a large part of Wales!

The author has clearly put a lot of effort into her research, which is why it is a bit of a shame that the inaccuracies have crept in. However I enjoyed the story enough that I would certainly look for the next book in this series.

However, HopeSprings, PLEASE reconsider your cover design for the next book. In my opinion the cover for this novel lets it down very badly, looking dated rather than ‘retro’.

I was sent a digital advance copy by the publisher ahead of publication, in order to review this book, and the comments above are entirely my own views.

Friends and Enemies: A World War II Romance***** #1 Promise for Tomorrow Series
by Terri Wangard

Seamstress Heidi Wetzel is heartbroken after learning her beloved husband, Erich, was killed in the war. As she struggles to find meaning in her life, she leaves her home to help care for evacuated children on a rural farm in war-torn western Germany....and offer some passive resistance against the Gestapo and all they stand for.

There is nothing pilot Cadet Paul Braedel loves more than flying—well except for his wife Rachel. His life comes crashing down around him when he learns that his wife suddenly became ill and has died. Since his flight school left while he was on bereavement leave, he is now in navigation school—as an astronomer, this is perfect. On a mission, his plane is shot down while flying over Germany, leaving he and his crew behind enemy lines. He must evade capture and prays for guidance, hearing God whisper for him to “find Heidi” he heads out on his search for her while keeping hidden from the enemy. Heidi is shocked when she runs into a man who she realizes is her best friend, Rachel—from the United States—husband, Paul. She must hide him quickly, but to do so is very dangerous for them all—including execution....then someone betrays them.

This book caught my interest from the first page to the last. The characters are true-to-life, with not just your everyday challenges and struggles, but all that comes with being in the middle of a war. It would be hard enough having the enemy show up at your door but when that “enemy” is truly a “friend” what is one to do? War declares Heidi and Paul to be enemies, but they were friends in the United States, do they become enemies now? The descriptions of the B-17 Paul and his crew were on are such that I could actually envision it, including the bitter cold and cramped space; and the German country side. Heidi was very resourceful in coming up with badly needed clothing, especially with such a shortage of fabrics as well as enough food for them all. Gestapo spies were everywhere, making it hard to know who to trust and who to steer clear of. Paul and Heidi's faith are challenged and strengthened throughout their struggles, heartaches, disaster and war. Emotions are high, fear, anger, suspense, tears—both happy and sad—faith and romance are woven throughout this story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to book 2.

Friends and Enemies: A World War II Romance by Terri Wangard. It is the story of Heidi Wetzel and Peter Braedel from 1943 until the end of the war. Heidi and Peter attended high school together in Wisconsin for three years. Heidi is best friends with Peter’s wife, Rachel. Unfortunately, Heidi’s father was asked to come back home to Germany to help in the families factory and business Steinhorst and Company. It has been five years since they returned home. Heidi has since married Erich Wetzel who is a soldier and works on U-boats. Then one day Heidi receives a letter stating that her husband is deceased (the sub went down). Heidi moves out to Bickenbach to help the Ziemer family on their farm. The Ziemer’s are taking in refugee children.

Peter has married Rachel. Peter is currently training to be a pilot when he receives a call. Rachel died unexpectedly. Peter’s class moves on without him so Peter changes to navigation school. This is a good fit for Peter with his degree in astronomy. Peter is ultimately assigned to England where he makes flights over Germany. Peter’s plane gets hit and he is forced to parachute out. Peter hears a voice that directs him towards Heidi for assistance. Will Peter be able to find Heidi and get out of Germany? Will Peter’s actions jeopardize the Ziemer’s and Heidi?

Friends and Enemies is unique in that we get the story from two different viewpoints. We get to see the war through a German’s eyes and an Americans. It was interesting to see things from a German civilian’s perspective. The book is a little slow during the middle (it drags), but then the pace picks up again. I like the author’s writing style (makes for good reading). I give Friends and Enemies 4 out of 5 stars. Friends and Enemies has compelling characters. I have read many books with a World War II theme over the last year. Friends and Enemies is one of the better books with this theme that I have read. It has a nice Christian theme that enhances the story.

My Review : "Wow, this book grabbed this reader's attention from the very beginning and never made me lose interest at all! The book I am taking about is "Friends and Enemies" by Terri Wangard.

This is what I posted on my Facebook wall after just beginning to read it "I'm reading "Friend and Enemies" by Terri Wangard, and I think it is going to be a great novel but a tear jerker as well. Only on chapter 2 and the tears want to fall from my eyes." I have to tell my blog readers that statement proved to be true! Yes, the tears were falling, some happy and some sad.

The book is about WW11 in Germany. It is a love story as well. Yes, the reader will read about bombs and airplanes being hit and violence but it is not over dramatic. I enjoyed this novel very much and I dislike anything to do with wars and guns and etc. I recommend this book to all readers who like the genre of Historical Fiction as well as a clean romance.

This book isn't your regular boy meets girl story. There are struggles along the way!

Another Facebook post I posted about the book while reading it "Well, a God may have gotten everything going, but He's not interested in our lives now." ....I still am mad sometimes." ..."But I still choose to believe in Him,because nothing else makes sense. And I have hope.....And something else." ...."Heaven is God's home. If you're not a friend of His, do you think He'll invite you in when you die? "
This is from a paragraph of"Friends and Enemies" by Terri Wangard. I left the scene description out of my typing but doesn't that last sentence give us something to think about?I literally couldn't stop reading this book till i have finished it!

I found it interesting that Heidi finds new uses for a flag as well as propaganda from the Nazis.

Paul's and Heidi's stories are ones that will leave you thankful for the freedoms we can enjoy today!

I have given "Friends and Enemies" by Terri Wangard fives stars.

I was given a copy by the publisher and Celebrate Lit for a honest review. The opinions expressed are mine own.

Friends And Enemies by Terri Wangard is a Christian historical novel set from 1943-45. The action takes place in Germany, America and England.
In the 1930's Heidi's family had lived in Milwaukee for several years before returning to Germany. In Milwaukee she met Rachel and Paul who later married. By a sheer quirk of fate both Paul and Heidi ended up losing their partners.
The reader sees war through the eyes of American Paul and German Heidi. Terri Wangard shows the sheer futility of war. The servicemen suffer. The civilians suffer. Everyone is a loser in war.
Heidi is not a Nazi sympathiser. She is at risk from both the Allied bombs and the Nazis. Heidi has to watch her tongue. Any negativity could see her imprisoned. Heidi moves from the city to the countryside but she is still in danger. Heidi recognises her dependency on God as she says "clinging to God was the only way she could survive in Nazi Germany. To turn her back on God would be to lose all hope." War serves to strengthen Heidi's faith. God is the only thing she can count on.
Paul in contrast struggles with his faith. He receives wise words from his chaplain "choose now to keep talking to God, even if you feel He is not listening." So often in life we can feel that God does not hear us, but He does and we can be sure He is always there even when He is silent.
Terri Wangard is an excellent writer. She reveals the hardships of war for the civilian and the serviceman alike. As a historian I was fascinated by all the details that she included.
Friends And Enemies is an extensive study of war, relationships and God. In war there are no winners. Clinging to God is the best course of action. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. So sit back on the sofa and travel to the 1940's and experience faith in war from the safety of your own home.

Terri Wangard provides excellent historical events that occurred during WWII and how the enemy, allies and others had to learn to cope during a tragedy period of our history in her upcoming book, WWII in Friends and Enemies: A World War II Romance. I was into the story from the beginning with the details Terri weaved about the primary characters, Heidi Wetzel and Paul Braedel. Heidi and Paul are characters that will become a part of your life and emotions as you are reading. There'll be victories, disappointments, angry and love throughout the story.

At the beginning of the story Heidi and Paul are an ocean apart. They had gotten to know each other when Heidi's family lived in America before being called back to Germany to help with the family business when WWII started. Tragedy strikes in Heidi's life along with her family, which caused Heidi to assist on a farm for evacuated children. Heidi is on guard at all times because of the enemy being around at unexpected times no matter what she was doing.

Ms. Wangard weaves in the romance between Heidi and Paul as she is assisting him after his escape, when his plane was shot down over Germany. Paul brings life to the evacuated children and the farm but twists and turns in the story brings Paul to the realization he must leave. Will Paul make his escape with Heidi's assistance or will they be captured after being betrayed by a member residing at the farm? Read this great historical inspirational story to discover events that we want to forget occurred in our American history.

5 Stars for Friends and Enemies: A World War II Romance. I received a free copy of this book from the Publisher in exchange for my honest review. I will definitely be reading more of Terri Wangard books.

This is an entertaining and informative World War II novel. I really liked how the story followed a woman in Germany and an American airman.

I enjoyed reading this historical novel. Wangard has done a great job recreating the situation in Germany during WW II. The tension, the shortages of everyday supplies and food, all of that was described in a way that drew me into the scenes. I was introduced to the care of orphans in rural farm areas. Families took in children when they didn't have enough food and clothing for their own children. It was a time when even saying something unpatriotic was punishable by execution.

This novel emphasizes relationships. We really see the effects of war on relationships. Heidi lost her husband to the German war effort. Paul lost his wife to a sudden illness when he was at military training. I was again reminded of how much loss there is in time of war.

There is also some action in the novel. We see the danger Germans faced when they were not loyal to the war effort. Women were vulnerable to Gestapo and other males of authority in the villages. There is also some action with Paul and the bombing runs over Germany. Overall, there was not as much action as I expected for a WW II novel.

I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy historical novels emphasizing relationships. You'll learn about the situation in Germany during the war and how it affected the Germans themselves.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel through Celebrate Lit for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

First off – EXCELLENT BOOK. I received a copy for my honest review and well, honestly, it was excellent . . .

The book is written in two parts. There are two story lines that are being told and as the reader can anticipate in the first few chapters, the stories will eventually converge. The author did a great job of steering events until the stories merged and the reader begins to follow a single story. I did not get bogged down in either story and was able to easily follow both without distraction.

I was impressed with the obvious research that the author did in reference to WWII and events in the United States, England, and Germany. I am a huge fan of historical based fiction and the author seamlessly kept history as the solid foundation of the story lines. The "romance" piece was there, but it was not over done and I would classify that aspect in this novel as "real" versus the "you have got to be kidding" writing that is so prevalent. I appreciate the author's expertise in story telling - to me, an author to be read over and over - as long as the "cheesy" romance is not there! It was a refreshing story line as so many romance novels are the same old story - just told in another town.

I told my husband after a few chapters “I have never read a book from what we would consider ‘the enemies’ side”. I will leave it at that so I will not spoil the story!!!

I highly recommend this new work by Terry Wangard. 4 1/2 stars! You will not be disappointed!

When I started reading I wanted to groan, because I thought to myself that this is another Christian WWII stories that follows the same pattern as the others I have read. But I was in for a surprise, this read like a movie and the story was more in depth in showing what the people had to endure at the time. The author is able to get the reader to experience the same emotions as the characters. You understand their pain and fear. You wonder how some people can see that the Socialist party is destroying lives and how others can't see it. You understand the fear of those who believe in Jesus and the fear that pastors must have encountered when they chose to stand for Christ. This book actually give you a glimpse of what can happen in our future. No, it is not political, but some of the things they were enduring then can definitely happen now. This is one of the best Christian WWII stories I have read in awhile. It is definitely well written and I highly recommend it.

Ps. I felt like I was in the story and not just reading it. It is amazing when the author can make you feel apart of the story.

It wasn't until I started reading this that I realized that I had already read the 3rd book in the Promise for Tomorrow series. Thankfully they all stand alone.
Well told with living characters, this story depicts the horrors of WWII without making you feel dirty. Paul is a navigator and serves in the 8th air force based in England. Oh, the loss of lives as they tried precision bombing in an attempt to halt the building of Nazi planes, ships, and submarines.
Heidi is German. She spent several years in America with her family, but is back in German. Her family are not Nazi supporters, but what can they do with informants everywhere?

There is a lot of jumping from Paul to Heidi, and back again. While not bad, it did make it a bit difficult to keep track of the fellow air force men with Paul. But at the same time, it was easier to not get too attached to them since there was no telling when someone would not come back from a mission.

The Christian element was good. I would have liked it to be a little stronger in places, but it wasn't lost totally. There was no language that I remember, no inappropriate scenes, and I don't even remember any kissing. I'd probably read this again.

I had the privilege of being an early reviewer of "Friends and Enemies".

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Friends and Enemies." I've read many novels depicting the war years, but Ms. Wangard brought together a refreshing story that started with much pain and sorrow. Ms. Wangard's ability to weave the hurts, fears, and finally love into the lives of her characters flowed at a decidedly entertaining pace. There was beautiful development of the characters feelings which invited me into their lives. What I loved most about this novel was the depth of Heidi's and Paul's inner voice, both having lost spouses during a time when the world seemed to have gone mad. Airmen and bombings, sacrifice and Gestapo pressure, hiding the enemy makes for a courageous escape, clinging to God's protection.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher in exchange for my honest review. Whether you are a World War II fan or not, I would wholeheartedly recommend to you "Friends and Enemies". It's a lovely story, filled with history and a touch of romance. A very enjoyable read.

This is a very good book! The author tells a compelling story of a German woman during WWII who aids an American pilot when his plane is shot down. In an instance of divine intervention, Heidi knows this man, the husband of her friend Rachel, whom she stayed with in American for three years when she was younger. In an awe-inspiring way, God speaks to Paul when he is trapped in enemy territory to "Find Heidi", his deceased wife's friend. The events that follow are a suspenseful journey that will lead to his escape from Germany and to a new love. The story shows in a very real way the dangers of Nazi Germany and those that lived for God during this tumultuous time. I really enjoyed this story and plan on reading more from this author, Terri Wangard. The book, Friends and Enemies is highly recommended. Thanks to the publisher for providing this complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

“Friends and Enemies” tells the story of American, B-17 navigator Paul Braedel and German widow, Heidi Wetzel. It is clear that author Terri Wangard has done extensive research to ensure a historically accurate portrayal of WWII in America and Germany. Information is sprinkled throughout the story using dialogue and rich description giving me a sense of the era and locations. It was refreshing to read a WWII novel that takes place in Germany; I have found very few. The main characters are well-written and ask many of the hard “real life” questions most people would like answered. A true page-turner, the story has stayed with me long after I finished the last page. I was thrilled to discover that Ms. Wangard will be publishing two more stories in this series. Highly recommended.

What an awesome read! This Inspiritional historical romance takes place during World War 2. Loss of loved ones, loss of crew mates, and trying to stay alive brings emotional reading. To find friends who help you back to your allies is a miracle. Then the friend and her family are in danger because of shielding you. How can Paul keep her safe while running for their lives? Who is the ally and who is the enemy? Only God can be trusted. It is a wartime romance with a second chance. This book brings the true aspect of war in a way that you feel you are part of it. "Friends and Enemies" is a gripping story about Paul and Heidi, two young people who were friends during high school in the 1930s. Heidi's family returned to Germany shortly before WWII. Paul, a navigator for the US air force, flies bombing raids over Germany during the war, where he knows that Heidi now lives. When Paul's Flying Fortress is destroyed, he is forced to seek out his old friend who is now in enemy territory. Terry Wangard's portrayal of this story holds your attention from start to finish. Her details of the raids into Germany are so realistic you feel like you're sitting right next to Paul in the nose of the plane. From the first page of this story, I was taken to a time in history that leaves a special place in my heart. The author uses descriptions and details that make the story come to life. The smell of strawberries at the market place, to the one egg allotted per family, to the smells of airplane fuel and destruction are found in this book. The characters are well developed and easy to follow. The lives of Heidi in one part of the world and Paul in another area of the world are different, yet, they both face obstacles that require faith in God. I recommend this story to readers of historical fiction. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I am a big fan of WWII historical fiction, and this author certainly delivers a good one with this debut novel. I was pulled into the lives of the characters and the story line from the first pages. The author has done a wonderful job of capturing the emotions of the characters and the uncertainty and trials of a German girl trying to rescue and keep safe an American airman in Nazi Germany. It is a compelling story of loss, faith and love that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review, and it is one that I certainly recommend to the reader who enjoys Historical fiction and romance. I definitely look forward to reading more by this author.

If you are looking for a great book set during World War 2 then Friends and Enemies by Terri Wangard is the book for you. This was the first book by Terri that I have read and I will say that I could not put the book down (or Kindle), I loved the story line she used and it is very clear that she did her research prior to writing this book. This book is full of twist and turns, love, and heartache, a book you definitely will want to read over again.

Terri has outdid her self with Friends and Enemies, I highly recommend this book to others.

Thank you to Celebrate Lit, Terri Wangard, and the publisher for providing me with a ebook copy for my review.

This is a wonderful story. The first half introduces us to an American navigator in England and a young German woman in Germany during world war II. Much is learned about each one and their backgrounds and current situation. I learned a lot about both living conditions that I had not known before. The second half is an exciting, heart-pounding story of Germany during the bombing and how people were living. This is a very well written Historical story and I highly recommend it. 'Friends and Enemies' by Terri Wangard is an awesome WWII Christian Fiction book! When I saw how long it was, I was a little intimidated, but to be honest, it would have been alright with me if it had been longer!

Some WWII books are just not that accurate, but that is not the case with this one; it is very well researched. It really puts you in the middle of the action with perspectives from Americans and Germans.

I can't begin to express how much I enjoyed reading 'Friends and Enemies' and can't wait for the next book 'No Neutral Ground'.

Friends and Enemies hooked me from the first word I read. Terri Wangard has written a story with unforgettable characters that really impress for a debut novel. When I read historical fiction I look for works that have rich historical detail and it's obvious this author has done her research. I felt as if I had a front row seat to the love, grief, faith and hope. This is an author that I look forward to reading her future works.

Really enjoyed this book. I have Never read a book from the perspective of someone living inside Nazi Germany during the war. The characters were believable, as you read the story you find yourself feeling trapped with them, holding your breath as they are almost found out or cheering when they make it through another day trusting Him to protect them as they follow His will for their lives. *Received this book free for my honest review*
