Her mother & father died when she was young; it is only when she accepts a scholarship to the prestigious Guilder Boarding School in England that a mysterious family secret is revealed. Will the sins of the father be the sins of the daughter? As Rae struggles with new friends, a new school and a star-struck forbidden love, she must also face the ultimate challenge: receive a tattoo on her sixteenth birthday with specific powers that may bind her to an unspeakable darkness. It's up to Rae to undo the dark evil in her family's past and have a ray of hope for her future.
Book 2 - Dark Nebula Nothing is as it seems anymore. Leery from the horrifying incident at the end of her first year at Guilder Boarding School, Rae Kerrigan is determined to learn more about her new tattoo. Her expectations are high, an easy senior year and a happy reunion with Devon, the boy she’s not supposed to date. All hopes of happiness turn into shattered dreams the moment she steps back on campus. Lies and secrets are everywhere, and a betrayal cuts Rae deeply. Among her conflicts and enemies, it appears as if her father is reaching out from beyond the grave to ruin her life. With no one to trust, Rae doesn’t know where or who to turn to for help. Has her destiny been written? Or will she become the one thing she hates the most—her father’s prodigy.
Book 3 - House of Cards Rae Kerrigan is three months away from graduating from Guilder Boarding school. She is now moonlighting as an operative for the Privy Council, a black ops division for British Intelligence. She’s given a mentor, Jennifer, who fights like a demon –fast, tough, and incredibly strong-willed. Rae finds a strange maternal bond with her. At the same time, she finds a new friend when Devon disappoints her once again. Childhood memories surface and evoke hidden secrets she is determined to solve. When the Privy Council ask for her help, she finds a friend, and a link, to the Xavier Knights – another agency similar to the Privy Council. Through the mystery and secrets, she begins to question what the PC represents and where she stands. Will she lose herself in the confusions of the past and present? What will it mean for her future?
Book 4 - Royal Tea The Queen of England has requested the help of the Privy Council. Someone is trying to kill her son’s fiancé. The HRH Prince plans to marry a commoner, and his bride has a secret no one knows but the Privy Council. She has a tatù. When the Privy Council turns to Rae for help, she can’t possibly say no; not even when they make Devon her partner for this assignment. They are to pose as a couple and work undercover, as bodyguards, to protect the soon to be Princess of Wales. Rae would rather be anywhere but with Devon, especially since she believes her mother to be alive, despite the Privy Council’s assurances to the contrary. The question is, how can Rae find proof of life for her mother, come to terms with her feelings for Devon, and manage to save the Princess, all while dressed for tea? When the enigma, the secrets and the skeletons in the closet begin to be exposed, can Rae handle the truth?
Book 5 - Under Fire Rae Kerrigan is determined to find her mother. No amount of convincing from Devon, or the Privy Council, is going to make her believe her mother is not alive, and Rae will stop at nothing to find her. Torn between friendship and loyalty, Rae must also choose between Luke and Devon. She can’t continue to deny, or fool herself, any longer. The heart wants what the heart wants.
Book 6 - End in Sight When life couldn't get anymore confusing, fate steps in and throws a curveball.
Wanita May grew up in the fruit belt of Ontario - St.Catharines. Crazy-happy childhood, she always has had a vivid imagination and loads of energy.
The youngest of six -- four older brothers, and a sister -- taught her at a young age to be competitive in all aspects of life.
At sixteen, she began competing in athletics (track and field) and before she turned seventeen, she was representing Canada in high jump. She continued to compete, breaking Canada's JR High Jump record (1.92m - 6' 3 1/2" for those metric-ly challenged). She attented University of Toronto, and Kansas State University - winning CIAU's and becoming All-American 6x - NCAA Indoors Runner Up + more.
But you're not interested in her athletic career - unless of course you're curious to know she stands 1.70m (5'7") and has jumped 20cm over her head on more than one occassion. She's represented Canada at the World Championships, World Jrs., won Francophone Games, and loved every minute of every competition. From the grueling workouts, the crazy weights she lifted on her back, the days she thought her lungs were going to spit out of her mouth for lack of oxygen, the travelling around the world and the opportunity to read - her favourite past time.
Life continued with her husband (a distance runner from Liverpool, UK, who she met at KSU) and then their first, then second and finally third child. Their house became full of more imagination and stories.
Wanita and her husband run an online business, dealing in antiques and collectables - particularly jewelry and porcelain (one of the business' website: www.wadeincanada.com ).
After her father passed away in 2009, from a six-year battle with cancer (which she still believes he won the fight against), she began to write again. A passion she'd loved for years, but realized life was too short to keep putting it off.
Her first book, Rae of Hope - from the Chronicles of Kerrigan - will be available October 2011 by kNight Romance Publishing.
She is currently represented by Dawn Dowdle of Blue Ridge Literary Agency. Wanita is a writer of Young Adult, Fantasy Fiction and where ever else her little muses take her.

The heroine:Rae Kerrigan - Rae gets a surprise scholarship to a private boarding school in England called Guilder. Rae doesn’t realize until she arrives that the school is for special students with superpowers. On their birthday at age 16, a Tatù (like a tattoo) appears which marks them as having inherited the gift from one of their parents. The Tatù is a representation of the gift/ability they have gotten. Rae turns 16 in November, so has a bit to wait.
The Hero(es):Devon - He has a fox Tatù which comes with abilities like super speed and extra strength. He has a girlfriend named Beth that goes to a school close by. He is tasked with tutoring Rae since most kids start at the school three years prior to getting their Tatù and Rae just began with no knowledge of their world.
The Story: Rae lost her parents at a young age and grew up with her uncle Argyle. His sister (Rae’s mother) got the Tatù in their family instead of Argyle and he never told her anything about her parents or their world. So when Rae came to Guilder, she knew nothing of the abilities or the Tatùs.
Rae finds out the rest of the student body seem to know more about her family than she did. It seems that marriages between two gifted people were forbidden and her father was not a good person (he is the Voldemort of this story). Some of the faculty and students expect Rae to be a chip off the old block apparently.
The narration was pretty great. The story is all told in Rae’s POV so there was just one narrator, Sarah Anne Masse, and she was perfect for this book. She did different voices for all the characters and there are quite a few. Many have English and Scottish accents so it is pretty cool that she can do them all so well.
I have seen some reviews that hit on the fact that it is similar to Harry Potter, and others that say it is similar to Twilight because the Hero saves the heroine from a falling object similar to how Edward saves Bella from the careening van in that book/movie. Though I don’t really see the comparison there. I do see it as a similar genre or trope as Harry Potter, not really a rip off of it.
I think you could take any romance and call it a rip off of another more popular book due to them being in the same trope but to me that is all it is. I like the trope of supernatural beings at a boarding school. X-men is similar in that way as well, but you would never call X-men or Harry Potter rip offs of each other because they are both uber popular.
Spoiler alert: the reviews for each subsequent book may have spoilers for the prior book. You should be able to read each review prior to each book, but if you read any of the reviews below you might find out more than you want

The heroine:Rae Kerrigan - she returns to school for her final year with a greater knowledge of her Tatù gift. Similar to her father’s gift, she is able to use the gifts of other Tatù’s after touching them. However, hers is even better than his was.
The Hero(es):Devon - he and Rae are now dating (in secret) since it is forbidden between Tatù people. Devon is now working for the Privy Council to try to find pieces of the brainwashing device that her father and his followers tried to use on her at the end of last year.
Supporting characters: Julian - Friend to both Devon and Rae. Julian has the gift of future visions. He works with Devon for the Privy Council. Kraigan - New student. He was found by headmaster Carter in an orphanage after getting a Tatù. He has dark curly hair and looks somewhat familiar to Rae. It is unclear what his Tatù actually does. Molly - Rae’s roommate last year. Her Tatù is electricity. She loves to shop and got a new boyfriend over the summer.
There was a lot of action in this book and a different villain than in the last book. Though the biggest thing is the way Rae doesn’t know who she can trust. It seems almost everyone she knows might have some reason to deceive her or at the very least is keeping something secret or has ulterior motives.
The story was better than in the first book and a bit more involved. The narration was every bit as good as the first book. The only voice I don’t like is that of Julian. It seems so slow, though it must be be hard to create different voices for all the different characters in this book.

The heroine:Rae Kerrigan - Rae becomes an agent for the Privy Council. She trains with a woman who knew her mother.
The Hero(es):Devon - Works for the Privy Council still. Devon has always been a rule follower and puts the Privy Council ahead of everything, even Rae. He often does things or keeps things from Rae. Luke - New guy that Rae meets. He doesn’t have a Tatù.
The Story: Rae seems a bit odd to me. For someone who has been attacked and betrayed as much as her, she has always seemed a bit to laissez faire about the fact that she wasn’t sure whether or not she could trust Devon. I kept thinking she was Scarlett O’Hara “I'll think about that tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is another day”, every time she wondered if she could trust him, but decided to not think about it now.
I liked this book. There have been times that I have liked Devon and times that I have thought he was not good enough for Rae. This book solidifies that fact. I don’t know who the Hero is. I like the fact that in this series, it is always up in the air whether someone is a good guy or a bad guy. This book opens up the fact that what you think is bad might not be all bad and what you think is good may not be all good.

The heroine:Rae Kerrigan - Now working for the Privy Council, Rae is partnered with Devon to protect the Crown Prince’s Fiancé who has a Tatù. A Group is determined to make sure that a Tatù person doesn’t get on the Thrown of England.
The Hero(es):Devon - he and Rae are no longer dating but have to go undercover as a couple in order to protect the future princess. Luke the new guy that Rae met. He works for the Xaviar Knights, a company that was originally started by her father and is dedicated to bringing Tatù people into the 21st century. (The Privy Council thinks they are a villainous organization).
Supporting characters: Maria - Rae’s friend who has the Tatù that she can send her thoughts to others. Rae and her can talk in their minds since Rae can mimic the Tatù and do the same. Prince Phillip - Prince of Wales Sarah - The future Princess of Wales. She has a Tatù that allows her to understand all languages. Molly - Rae’s former. Her Tatù is electricity. She loves to shop acts as the stylist for Rae and Devon while they go to the parties and luncheons with the Prince and his fiancé. Curtis - works with Maria on the communications piece of the job they are doing for the Royalty.
I liked the story in this book and as usual, the narration was perfect. However, sometimes I think Rae is an idiot. There is a plot to kidnap or kill the future princess because she has a Tatù. Rae works for the Privy Council as an agent, but for someone who never trusted anyone in previous books, in this book she trusts all kinds of things that are obviously shady and doesn’t figure out the real enemies until they basically hit her over the head.
I like the story and the characters, I just wish Rae would have at least wondered about certain shady situations instead of just going for the simplest explanation of why these things happened. Rae has been such a strong character in previous books. In this one she was strong, but just a bit dimmer.

The heroine:Rae Kerrigan - has a Tatù that gives her the ability to mimic the Tatù’s of people she has touched at some point. She recently figured out that she also has her mother’s Tatù, which is that of fire and to not be burned by fire she creates.
The Hero(es):Devon - he confessed his Love for Rae at the end of the last book. Luke - Worked for the Xaviar Knights and found a box that Rae thinks can be opened by the Key she was directed to by clues her mother left her.
Supporting characters: Bethany - Rae’s mother who may or may not be dead. Carter - President of the Privy Council who was in love with Rae’s mother. Jennifer - Rae’s mentor from the Privy Council and former best friend and Privy Council partner to her mother. Julian - Friend to both Devon and Rae. Julian has the gift of future visions. He is the one person Rae has always trusted. Molly - Rae’s former. Her Tatù is electricity. She loves to shop acts as the stylist for Rae and Devon while they go to the parties and luncheons with the Prince and his fiancé.
The Story: Rae thinks her mother may still be alive and is determined to find out more information. Though, nobody in the Privy Council believes her. Supposedly her mother died in the fire she started when Rae was six years old. She set the fire in order to kill her husband Simon Kerrigan who was crazy and determined to rule the world.
However, now that Rae has her mother’s power, she knows that she can start a fire and not get burned by the flames so she assumes her mother could not have died in the fire she started. She thinks the burned female body was Kraigan’s mother and not hers, since Kraigan mentioned his mother had disappeared around that time.
This book had the best story so far. I don’t want to give anything away, but so much happened in this one and so many things were revealed.

The heroine:Rae Kerrigan - Found out that someone new wants her dead. She and her friends now mentor new students at Guilder Boarding School.
The Hero(es):Devon - Rae’s partner at the Privy Council and in life. He and Rae have confessed their love for each other and want to be together.
Supporting characters: Kraigan - Rae’s half-brother by her father. Kraigan has a Tatù like hers but it can steal the ability of whomever he touches, until he touches another person. When going against Rae, he can steal the ability she is using at the time, until he touches her again. Doing this over and over he can steal all of the abilities she has. He also might have an ability similar to his mothers, but Rae doesn’t yet know what that is. Rae has gone up against Kraigan twice and he supposedly left the country after the last time. Julian - Friend to both Devon and Rae. Julian has the gift of future visions. He is the one person Rae has always trusted. He is having trouble with his visions. Molly - Rae’s former. Her Tatù is electricity. She loves to shop acts as the stylist for Rae and Devon while they go to the parties and luncheons with the Prince and his fiancé. Cromfield - lived over 500 years ago and had a Tatù similar to Julian’s where he could see and draw the future.
The Story: Rae, Molly and some of their friends have finals to deal with and graduation from Gilder around the corner. Though many of them work for the Privy Council, they are still required to finish school and graduate. Though they are still working on finding out who is the person behind the murder of her father and Kraigan’s mother, they have to put things aside to take finals and graduate.
The story isn’t as strong as the previous books but it ends in quite a surprise.
Overall for the series, I am giving this a 4.3. Narration on the series is definitely a 5, but I want a bit more romance.
The storyline is definitely very intriguing, and dare I say an original twist on supernatural abilities. However there is room for much improvement. The writing style is almost, almost confusing. There seem to be a number of loopholes that were hastily patched up or vaguely explained away, and it some cases ignored altogether. There is somewhat of a consistency issue as you progress through the book. Also, things move along very quickly while somehow almost moving nowhere. Overall, it's a good book and the story was enough to help me tolerate the problems. I hope the author continues to grow as a writer and improves.
I don’t even know where to start! This series is phenomenal. It’s real, it’s fantasy, it’s captivating, it’s beautiful, it’s surprising. It is a series you will not be able to put down. I highly suggest reading it. If you love the whole a world within a world thing, the forbidden love thing, or just reading.. you will love this series. High five author, best book I’ve read in a while!
Read the first 6 books in this boxed set and really loved it! Teenagers becoming of age with special powers at a special school that helps them learn their skills and in the end use for fighting against evil. Purchasing books 7-12 to finish the adventures!!!
I'm going to be generous with three stars. I wanted to quit this book many times because the writing is so terrible. The characters are shallow caricatures of actual humans. Her portrayal of both teenage males and females makes me wonder if she had any contact whatsoever with the species when she was at that age. The characters are constantly overreacting to the non-information they are given. There is rarely any information given at all, despite there being numerous times in the story when any person, rational or not, would just ask the stupid question.
Yet, despite all that, she is telling a good story. The first four books, the one's I've read so far, are a good story told poorly. She approaches the introduction to a super-powered world from a unique perspective - that of the offspring of a villain. Were this story told my an actual wordsmith I would ask for more stars to give it. However, I can only recommend it for people who, like me, find it difficult to give up on books once started and are able to see beyond the terrible prose to the plot beyond.
This box of the first 6 books contains the next titels: - Rea of Hope - Dark Nebula - House of cards - Royal tea - Under fire - End in sight
Just only the titels tells you so much of the serie and the build u in the total 6 books is really good. Through out the story you stay interessed. There wasn't a part which I found boring. Also the book had a good combination of adventure and romance.
I dont want to spoiler too much. But the main charather Rea Kerrigan will always face a new trial and not always everything is as it seems. You can see Rea grown in all the books, with every new experience you notice that she acts more mature. The way she processes that she has power, her family raputation and the loss of her mother as well. Rea has so many questions about it and everytime one question is anwersed there are 3 more to replace the one question that she asked about.
Ofcourse I can not forget to say I really loved the way Rea and Devon their forbidden relationschip was written down.
All by all, this is a really great serie, it stays interesting through out all of the books and within 2 days I was done with all the 6 books. I was binge reading it, because the story was really bringin me to it. Like I was there with Rea.
This book is highly recommand if you like fantasy, adventure and romance.
I had the ebook and I also listened to some on Audible. Love that the Boxset had the first 6 books of this series. There is a total of 12 in this series and then 6 or so more with a spin-off series; which is really still this series because it’s the same main character, so there’s 12 more books to read to get the full story. Then more spin-off books with some other characters too. The narrator was good; her accent was a little weird at times, but overall she did a great job. I enjoyed the listen. It was nice having the ebook too though.
Overall, the series was entertaining and fun! Love all the powers the characters have! Some really cool tatùs (magical tattoos); healing, fire, electricity, super speed, plus so many more! Loved all of that! There’s also a super sweet romance! This is mostly YA, but there are some light adult elements in these first 6 books. I read all 6 books in a row, and I didn’t get sick of the story, so that a major plus. The story doesn’t start out very original, but it has enough unique elements throughout the series to make the book its own story. It can get a little repetitive and there were times the characters should’ve know something they found out in a previous book, but didn’t. Still overall, lots of interesting ideas going on. I’ll do a brief review of each of the books. There will probably be spoilers in some of the reviews for the previous books in the series.
Book 1 - Rae of Hope This one starts out with 15 year old Rae finding out she’s supposed to get a tatú that will give her a magic power when she turns 16. Her parents are dead and she’s been living with her uncle and aunt, but since her 16th birthday is coming soon, she is sent to a special school with other people like her. Rae is dealing with learning about this whole new world and it doesn’t help that her dad wasn’t exactly a nice guy, so she’s treated poorly by some. She does meet some friends though, and has a sexy mentor in Devon. Unfortunately, he’s not single and 2 tatús can’t be together anyway. This one is very YA.
Book 2 - Dark Nebula Devon and Rae are in a forbidden secret relationship; you know that will cause problems, because 2 tatús can’t be together. There’s not really a good reason why it’s frowned upon; it’s just because the council is stuck in their old ways and close minded. Devon happens to work for the council, so Rae and Him are separated more than together in this book. Devon is keeping secrets, which puts a damper on their relationship; he’s too much of a rule follower. The romance is so sweet. Rae is learning more about her tatú and about her parent’s past. After being betrayed in the last book, Rae is finding it difficult to trust. I love how Rae is generally a mature person, and she kicks butt with her cool powers! I love how she can mimic all these different powers! Too awesome!
Book 3 - House of Cards Rae joins the council in this one and is trying to still finish school. She’s having a tough time after her half brother tried to kill her; plus, there’s more and more secrets coming out about her parents. Devon is not a cool guy in this one; he’s not there for Rae when she needs him most. Rae is training with the council and goes on some fun missions. Enjoy that action! It’s cool to learn about all the different powers out there and how Rae uses them to her advantage. She’s growing and becoming more of her own person.
Book 4 - Royal Tea Rae and Devon are tasked by the council to work together on a mission. It’ll be difficult for Rae since she’s still heartbroken over Devon breaking up with her. He was a total butt in the last book, but there’s still a connection there. Love the missions! This one deals with some royals, so it was lots of fun seeing Rae and Devon in that type of glam world. Lots of action and entertainment! Rae is also looking into more information about what happened with her mom. There’s a possibility she may still be alive, so Rae has her friend Luke help her out with research; Devon isn’t happy. A do think the characters needed to use a bit more common sense in this one, but still a totally entertaining story. The romance is once again super sweet and I love the depth of connection involved. Heart touching.
Book 5 - Under Fire Rae is on a quest to find out more about her mom, but in the last book, Luke was attacked before he could tell Rae anything. Rae is in for some major surprises in this book; surprises that don’t help her trust issues. Devon is totally adorable in this one and I love how he’s finally putting Rae first in his life. It’s nice to see their romance progress to the next step. By this point, I think Rae is 19ish and it’s been years, so it’s about time. Molly has really grown on me and I’m loving her in this one. Still tons of adventure and fun in this one!
Book 6 - End in Sight Rae is dealing with her mom being alive, graduation, and her forbidden relationship with Devon. Plus, there’s someone that has been behind all the bad things that have happened to Rae and her family, so Rae and her friends are trying to solve the mystery. Lots of fun and intrigue! Devon is a sweetheart in this one, and it’s great to see Rae and Him grow even closer. Rae is still kicking butt with her powers and it’s great to see her maturing. Still lots of entertaining action!
I really do want to continue this series, but with so many books left and about $3.99 a pop for each one, I’m going to have to hope another Boxset comes out with the rest of the books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I like the overall story line and it started fairly well. The world of supernatural abilities is intriguing and reminds me a bit of Harry Potter.
However, I feel that the author was lazy with her research and writing. The book is set in England, yet the books are packed full of Americanisms from the British characters and is very often not correct for Britain, such as GPAs that we don't have, when A levels are mentioned they are 2 years too late in our education as we graduation from school at 16, you can't drive until 17, and so on... Often the wrong words are used, such as subway instead of underground, mum instead of Ma'am when addressing royalty, interstate should be motorway. You get the picture. There are far too many to list and they are often confusing the story and definitely distracting. There are also loads of continuity errors that left me confused then frustrated. These books definitely need a British proofreader, or just set it in America!
I did read all 6 books as I liked the overall world and characters that were created, however, I'm not willing to pay extra for the remaining 6 books in the series because the story and Rae's abilities are getting too far fetched, in addition to the problems outlined above. I won't be reading any more from this author.
Rae of Hope kind of reminds me of The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. A girl, Rae, is thrust into a secret world of special marks, called Tatùs, instead of Runes. You only get one and it's on your 16th birthday. They give you enhanced powers like Runes. We start the story out a little before Rae's 16th birthday. Also, like Clary, she has Daddy™ Issues. Though, W.J. May has Cassie beat in number of books in a series.
I decided to purchase the audio for this box set ( I mean, hello... it was 8 dollars for 6 books) and enjoy the narrator so far. She does accents for the characters and you can tell them all apart, basically. Some are more annoying than others. The writing is a bit cheesy and some references are a bit dated (ipods) and who remembers catty females and calling other girls bitches... *major eye roll* and don't forget all the guys fawning over the new girl. *yawn* BUT, I did enjoy the story enough to continue on to book 2.
Why are girl's Runes tatùs actually tramp stamps but guys get to have theirs on their arm? Who thought that was ok? What if someone is trans or nonbinary? Ok, we get it. Rae is jealous of any girl Devon breathes around. Also, girl, what do you see in him? Also, also, I feel like I've heard the creepy evil secret brother who wants to continue Daddy's evil deeds and sleep with his sister story before. I'm excited about future secret society adventures, though. On to book 3.
Despite some inconsistencies with time, and the whole on again off again crap with Devon, this series is growing on me. I like the new added Royalty aspect.
Literally, how are any of these characters alive? They're all selfish self centered idiots. Except Molly and Julian. Who are the only characters I currently care about. Devon can choke. He's a manipulator and gaslights the shit out of Rae. But just say 'ily' or 'you're my heart' and she forgets about everything. Communication? We don't know her. She doesn't deserve Luke, tbh. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
One of the things that has kept me reading this far are the tatùs. As far as I can tell, they're almost all individual in some way. I even like what Rae can do with hers. And I'm happy she has friends who support her and indulge her spontaneous adventures. But is she really so special that she has the privilege of getting other tatùed people flown (drove? scootered? air dropped?) whenever she conveniently needs to steal their ability.... jsksjsjsj
And, I'm really sad the Royalty storyline flopped. 😔
These books are a product of their time and it shows. I don't just mean dated technology and stuff. The ingrained misgnony is heavy. In 2015 this was basically Publishing so I try to look over most of it to a point in older books. Publishing has come so far in the past few years since these were released but we also still have a long way to go.
I honestly had planned to only write the first two sentences and move on to book 6 but I guess it was time for a rant. 😌
A boxset by another prolific author! If you like paranormal fiction, especially of the teenage/coming-of-age kind, you’ll enjoy this series. This set of stories is set in a magic academy to train the gifted as they are coming into their powers (12 in this set, 6 in the next, 6 in the set following and then an abundance of spin-offs).
This set of books, containing six books, Rae of Hope, Dark Nebula, House of Cards, Royal Tea, Under Fire, and The End in Sight, begins with fifteen-year-old Rae Kerrigan as she travels the south of England to finish her final years of education at Guilder Boarding School. This has been arranged by her uncle Argyle, her guardian since her parents were killed in a house fire when she was six. Daunted by arriving at a new school in a different culture, having to deal with different dialects and accents, and being one of the few girls in what had previously been an all-male environment, she is quickly made aware that her outsider status goes much deeper than that. Her father, Simon Kerrigan, had been a power-hungry militant, who had drawn followers after him, splitting the gifted community and nearly causing a war. Her position at the school is as much that she can be watched as as to educate her in the proper use of her powers and proper behaviour in the gifted community.
Despite her bumpy start, she settles into the community, making friends with the wild Molly, who, like Rae, has not yet got her tatú, the indelible indicator that a gifted has a power and what that power is. She also makes friends with a good number of the boys, especially Devon, who has a leopard tatú giving him increased speed and heightened senses, and Julian, whose tatú gives him visions allowing him to see the future.
As Rae learns more of her powers, she also learning more of her past, and begins to come to terms with it. Unfortunately, there are parts of the past which are not as dead and buried as the community had hoped, and as she comes into her powers, those forces are hoping to make her part of their campaign and use her as a rallying point. Rae, with the help of her friends, some of them in surprising places, must dig out the threats and eliminate them for her own sake, and the sake the gifted and the normal communities.
The first book follows Rae’s first year at Guilder Boarding School, but the subsequent books settle into a less regimented storyline, dealing with threats as they arise. As a result, from book two onwards, while they do resolve much of the book’s storyline, they tend to end on cliff-hangers, demanding ‘just one more book’.
WJ May has created an interesting, easy-to-read series, well aimed at the intended readership. Her characters are all too human, loveable at times, annoying at others, and display the usual teenage ability to swing rapidly between moods and to pass judgement in black-and-white terms. The characters also display an ability to grow, however.
What is obvious from the Chronicles of Kerrigan series, and from the other books and book series that Ms May has created, is that she loves her work and loves the characters that she has created, whatever she may end up putting them through.
Like the main character in many stories, Rae is ignorant of her heritage due to being orphaned at an early age. She doesn't let that define her. She strives to be a good person and to do her best in every activity. Especially when life throws hardballs at her. Overall a delightfully unpredictable story (at least for many of the major points).
2 Dark Nebula: 5 stars
Rae Kerrigan continues her quest to be herself: not her father reincarnate as other members of the cast regularly question her. Trust becomes harder for her. She seems a bit dense about some things and people but that's part of her charm. There are a few predictable elements but for the most part unexpected issues popped up frequently. Overall, excellent.
3 House of Cards: 5 stars
Delightful continuation of the series. Rae faces plenty of issues and action as she moves through the morass that is Guilder, the Privy Council, and the tatù world. I look forward to what is to come in the following stories.
4 Royal Tea: 4 stars
Plenty of tension but it is not overly drawn out. Plenty of action as well. The primary relationships continue to be in turmoil. What kept me from giving this 5 stars has to do with the murky nature of the ending of the mission. It simply was unsatisfying to me.
5 Under Fire: 4 stars
Interesting read. The first encounter between Luke and Devon almost caused me to stop. Fortunately, a wise woman name Wanita convinced me to continue. Beyond that, there were a few predictable points. Nonetheless, the story unfolded in a delightful manner. I hope that you enjoy it at least as much as I did.
6 End In Sight: 5 stars
Very good wrap up of Rae's time at Guilder. However, to me, the ending was unexpectedly disheartening.
Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Informative. Inspirational. Romantic. Scary. Tear-jerker. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.
This is a boxset so please excuse the overall review. Rae Kerrigan, an ordinary girl was thrown into a world full of magic at the age of 15. She had no idea what she could do and the amount of people that were actually afraid of her. Rae’s parents died in a fire when she was young so she lived with her Uncle Argile. She was sent to Guilder, a school for the Tattooed kids. Here they learn their abilities and how to use them. Rae’s unique ability is in part that both her parents were Tattooed. This is hugely frowned upon. Tattooed people are not meant to couple with one another. Rae’s ability is that she can mimic other’s Tattoos by touch. Not only can she mimic, she can keep it, forever. She is truly rare and special. Rae has a long journey of discovering her power and how to grow it. She has to prove that the sins of the father are not the sins of the daughter. She battles people trying to use her, kill her, betray her, and control her. There always seems to be danger following Rae. She is young, naive and hot temped which always got on my nerves. But she learned, she grew, and she overcame a lot. I was always rooting for Luke. He was sweet and helped her no matter the cost. But Rae’s heart always belonged to Devon. And Julian, everyone needs a bestfriend like Julian. This is a great series and I enjoyed every book.
Rae of hope 5 stars This world is fantastic. The building of characters and atmosphere is amazing. The author has captured a whole new world with this series. I’m going straight onto the second book in the series as I can’t wait to see what happens next. Fantastic performance. Dark Nebula 5 stars This book is amazing. The characters are really coming into their own selves, the characters have been built so well by the author. There’s so much more to come! Fantastic performance. House of cards 5 stars I’m falling in love with these characters more and more as these books go on. The storyline continues through these books and the plot thickens. Excellent performance. Royal Tea 5 stars Yet another gem. This series gets better and better. The characters are developing very well. The storyline continues to entertain. Excellent performance. Under Fire 5 stars This storyline is absolutely addictive. I can’t get enough of these characters. They have me hooked in this magical world. Written very well. With a fantastic performance. End in Sight 5 stars I’ve not enjoyed a series this much in such a long time. There’s so much going on. Lots of great characters with magical gifts. This is just the escape from reality I needed.
I think that if I had read the first book alone I do not think I would have continued the series. Lucky that I found the 6 books together. Well it was really funny, and good quirky; reminded me of The Mortal Instruments a lot because of the main characters family situations. The best character is Molly, fight me. The reason why I decided on 3 stars is because I found some inconsistencies in the narration like a character saying something like “Oh probably she doesn’t know this” but that had been discussed in one of the previous books so the character would have already know. I would get very confused there. Also I believe that although Rae, the main character, was overpowered she would forget she even had a tatù that she could use was very nice because it wasn’t a Mary Sue all powerful and brilliant, which most of the time was like that in the books. Also some things were sooooooo predictable it was crazy, I dont know If I’m getting better at guessing these paranormal/romance/fantasy books or ??? I think its odd I had so much to say about these books; byeeeeee (maybe ill see if i get the next 6books for free teheee)
The chronicles of Kerrigan is a very well written story with so many twist and turns that you will be sitting on pins and needles as you stay away each night to try and finish a chapter then end up finishing that book before you realize it is 2 or 3 in the morning. W.J. May has a different approach of grabbing her readers and keeping them wanting more. I am very pleased with my very first series I have started for this amazing author. As soon as I finish this full series I'm going to check out some of her other work. This is a story about getting powers when you turn 16. The main character of the story has a very rough time when she reaches the special school that others like her attend. She has some really close friends and some people she should have never trusted but once she figured that out she gets even stronger. If you get a chance he sure to check out this amazing series but W.J. May for yourself. You won't be disappointed if you do.
This box set is the first 6 books in a series with 12+ 6 sequel books. It is a Young Adult Fantasy series set in an exclusive boarding school for gifted children with a female Protagonist who comes from USA to study. It has all the basic elements of a fantasy series with a whole lot of action, as well as growth of characters in the face of adversity. The author has built a fantastical universe in the English countryside that works behind the scenes protecting the world yet hiding from them. The secondary characters, the students and teachers at the school have their own stories that pick up pace as the stories progress. The villains too have detailed plans and backstories which real you in. There is a budding romance between the protagonist Rae and a fellow student but it is not an easy road for them either but the romance does not overshadow the magic of the story. A must read for fantasy fans, you will end up binge reading this one for sure.
This was fine, about a private school for kids with supernatural powers. I liked the unique powers and their delivery: on their sixteenth birthday, those who will get "tatus" (not to be confused with "tattoos," though they may look similar) awaken with a mark on their body relating to the special power they will have. For instance, a guy with a fennec fox tatu has super night vision, speed, hearing -- characteristics of real fennec foxes. Our heroine, Rae, has a hybrid tatu, inheriting power from both parents. The one from her father, a notorious villain in the tatu world, allows her to absorb the power from any tatu'd person she touches; her mother's makes her impervious to fire. With virtually unlimited power at her command, it's no surprise that Rae can outfight any adversary. There's also a lot of hyperbole about her beauty, the devotion she inspires, her intelligence, etc. Issues arise, but they are dealt with. Whenever a potential pitfall appears, someone also appears with the exact tatu needed to overcome it. As I said, fine.
These stories are your classic YA fantasy tale of the young orphan who discovers she has special powers and is thrown into a world she never knew existed. Often, these young people step up with shocking levels of maturity. Not Rae Kerrigan, which is kind of refreshing. She’s a whining brat through much of the early books, but you can’t blame her. She has a bit of a right to be angry at the lack of guidance she is given. The overall plot is exciting, the love story is sweet, and the characters are engaging with a few providing nice comic relief.
The biggest issue with this series is the plethora of errors. It is pretty obvious that the author cranks these books out with minimum oversight. Character names change, eye colors change, things that were revealed get another “shocking” reveal later, etc. This is particularly annoying when reading the books in a bundle like this. That said, I find the stories engaging enough to keep going with the series.
An interesting premise of how people get powers and what they get, lots of stuff that goes wrong that wouldn’t if people just talked to each other.
To be honest I might have gone up to four stars if not for the inconsistencies. At first I thought it was me misremembering but after the third or fourth time I scrolled back and checked and no it was a complete contradiction. This happened several more times. To give an example on on page her uncle says he can’t be there because he has to get back to be with his wife, several pages later he’s saying how he already booked his plane ticket and was going to be there. Then when the event happens he’s not even a thought in anyone’s mind.
The box set doesn’t actually end the series it’s more like a half way point but if I’m honest I’m not going to read more (unless I already bought it and forgot) I have a vague interest in find out how it ends but not enough to make me put up with more inconsistencies.
From book one to book six, I was completely mesmerized by this fantastic tale of teenagers gaining supernatural powers through unique tatu's at the age of sixteen. In the old days, it was only males that were trained, until Rae Kerrigan came along... Her mysterious past she knew nothing about until she steps foot into her new English "boarding" school. These books are filled with dangerous plots, twists and turns, along with deceit, lies and utter betrayal. Rae finds herself with a handful of friends she can rely on and trust completely. This series will blow you away! There's too much to go over in six books. You simply HAVE to read it to find out! It's definitely a must-read series! If you pass this up, you have no idea what you're missing! 5+ stars! I can't wait to download book seven!
As a reader and an author, I love the concept of these books. The hero's journey is unique and interesting with great twists. The issue though starts around book 5. The plot has holes in it. They never finish the job with the royals though they are to 'report' back on Monday.
That's just the beginning of unfinished sub-plots. Otherwise this series would recieve 5 stars from me. This can happen when the author is self-editing rather than using an outside editor for the storyline.
There are about 11 books in this series. I have purchased book 7 to see how the storyline and editing continue because I love the key concept and plot.
As an author I know how easy this problem can happen and would recommend these books.
If you're okay with plot especially sub-plot errors, then you'll love this engaging tale of magic and romance.
Starting a new school is always daunting. More so when it is a school for people with an unusual gift. All forms of power are moulded at Guilder. None more so than Rae Kerrigans. She is special, even among her own community. Hidden from normal folk a secret dating from Henry 8th these students learn how to control the gift they receive on their 16th birthday. A very well written series that is very enjoyable. You just want to keep reading to find out what trouble Raevis going to find herself in next. She is different and there are those that want her dead. My only criticism is that the story is based in the UK but the author flicks from British terminology to "Americanism" in dialogue and descriptions.
I liked the look of this story, but was a bit concerned as there were six books. I thought if there are six books and I don't like the story, because of my compulsive nature I'm still likely to read them, which I see as a waste of my valuable time. Fortunately, it wasn't a problem I loved it. I read all six in three days wanting more.
I'm now going through book seven, this is a clever story with lots to keep the reader occupied from relationships and spy stuff, to awesome abilities and even cool cars.
If I had a niggle it was the lack of knowledge on all things British. It was clear this was written by an American. We don't graduate here, we don't have sidewalks, and we have bars as well as 'pubs'(public houses), whereas France doesn't have 'pubs'.
I forgave the author this only because the story so engrossed me in-between these inaccuracies.
… unfortunately a lot of irritating inconsistencies. Especially in the first books the author seems to forget what has already been revealed, as well as forget how many years they have been attending the school.
Personally, I also feel it takes too long before things heat up between Rae and Devon, and when it finally does the description is really disappointing. I understand this is a YA series, but come on!
All that aside; I think the storyline and concept is really good, with originality and surprises that kept me reading the whole box set with first 6 books. With better editing I would buy the next box set too, but as it stands I will probably let this world go, even though I liked the books.
Entertaining, interesting idea. However it is repetitive in the use of mistrust with everyone, becoming quite predictive. What bugs me the most is that the author has forgotten their own timeline. Books one to 5 are in the span of about 18 months. The author keeps saying over and over "the last few years" "the last two years" and I hope I'm wrong but I thought I read something like "three years ago". All of these referring to first attending the school in I believe September then going a full year and continuing 6 months to the tea party in March and April making it about 18-19 months, not two years. Like other readers stated there are a lot of loopholes and quick patches. Sometimes it feels like I missed a whole page where there should have been dialogue. There was even a part when the main character used MacGyver power then the next book was happy to get it back but hadn't lost it between then??? I'm no great speller and I'm dyslexic, but who proofread this? Now I do like the interesting take on superpowers and it is a fun quick read. I have read 5 and may as well read the rest. I do hope the author matures as a writer as the next books come.
So much has happened from book1 till book 6.. I don't want to give the story away.. In a world where ppl have special tatu's that depict what talent they have Rae is unique and has 2 talents. A murderous father that has a evil legacy that just the mention of his name brings loathing and disgust a teenage girl has to traverse this world where everyone hates her and wants her dead. Enveys her powers and wants her dead. Or wants to use her powers for themselves and if she doesn't follow their rules ... wants her dead, a teenage girl has to put up with all this when she didn't even know anything about this world and was thrown into the deep end.
I love this series! The story line instantly pulled me in and I couldn't put it down. I love the take on supernatural powers. The author did a good job with building new world inside of our own. It makes me wish that I would have gotten a cool tattoo when I turned 16. Even though there's a lot to love about this series there are a few things that can do with some improvement. There are blatant mistakes in the editiing. I am surprised they were missed before this book was published. There are also a few small inconsistencies throughout the story line. I love this series so much though that I am willing to overlook these minor details. It was a great read and i highly recommend it!
This being the first time I've read any of this author's works, I had no preconceived idea what to expect from either the author or the storyline itself. Sometimes that's good, and sometimes that's bad. Looking at something with a fresh pair of eyes definitely can go either way. In this case, although I did enjoy this YA story, I would ask the author to please, please, please either get a Beta group or a new editor. Throughout the entire book set I felt more like a beta reader marking corrections the author could make than a reader trying to enjoy a new work of art. I don't want to be a discouragement and for that will give the book 3 stars for the storyline itself.
