These stories have their roots in the lives of friends and acquaintances. In that sense they aim to hold a mirror up to slivers of reality, to aspects of Thai life not much portrayed, or at least not faithfully so. They seek to record, and offer an implicit commentary on, Thai values and attitudes, and the response of outsiders to those values and attitudes, in the hope that this may make the Western reader think more closely about her or his own moral assumptions and social judgements.
Above all, the stories are entertainments, some with a serious sub-text but others frankly frivolous, as befits pictures of a society where the pursuit of "sanuk" - fun - is a major aim in life. If you do nothing else, I hope you enjoy them.
