Luke Stuart and Tom Schurtz ride out the final leg of the long trail from Dodge City, Kansas to the Stuart home in the cattle and sheep country of Medina County, Texas in the summer heat of 1877. There the Stuart family renews their communion after Luke's four-month absence. There too Tom is welcomed first into their home, then into their confidence. Luke and his wife, Elizabeth, share with Tom their plan to venture out into the raw frontier of West Texas and seek out a hidden canyon–that may not exist–and start a ranch. Cañon Escondido, their proposed destination, boasts a reputation for mystery and the supernatural in the legends of the Apache, Comanche, and Mexicans while promising a paradise of plenty to those who find it, at least so claims their Apache-Irish neighbor, Sean Grady, and his Mexican wife, Maria.

Such a plan would require leaving Luke's cousins, the Richter family, for whom he has been working cattle on shares and with whom the Stuarts have developed a loving familiar bond. It would require leaving the sheepherding Gradys, as well, with whom they have forged a loving bond of friendship. Well, maybe not all the Gradys, if young Andy is allowed to accompany Luke, Elizabeth, Tom, and the Stuart's three young children, Zachariah, Rachel, and Robert.

Preparations include a roundup, a trip to San Antonio, a meeting with a lawyer, a secret purchase, and celebrations with friends and family. All that considered, when it comes down to it, will the Stuarts be able to depart from a cherished home and beloved family and friends and take up the arduous pioneer trail into the unforgiving frontier?
