After returning to Elaeavn from his exile, Galen is caught up in a fight he wants nothing to do with. When Lorst offers him a job that requires he leave the city, he gladly accepts as there’s no role for an assassin in his homeland.

The assignment brings him back into danger, and forces him to reconnect with a woman he’d left behind long ago, leaving him with mixed emotions and Cael with jealousy. Completing the job is only the beginning, and forces a discovery that even those who hired him hadn’t expected.

If he fails, the dangerous Hjan will gain the power of the crystal, but succeeding means that he’s brought deeper into something even his skills haven’t equipped him to face. Galen must use friends old and new to survive, but even that might not be enough to stop the Hjan.

Set during events of Rise of the Elder in The Dark Ability series.

freedom to move on

Galen is an assassin who thinks before he kills. now he has started caring and caring deeply, about what is happening to his former home. in spite of this, he must use those skills to the ultimate of his ability. who will live now?

superb the-in series to the Sliders. also excellent on it's own.

Book 3

Book 3 was a fun read and had errors throughout. The ending of the series was disappointing. the characters and plot was rushed and did not explain a lot of what was happening and crossed over from the other series of the dark ability.

too much promise, too little result

Obviously a steppingstone book. Lots of promise, too few results. Plot stumbles forward toward a result but makes little progress.
Pick up the pace; we want answers, not more teasers.

Great series!

I’ve enjoyed this series and have already read The Shadow Accords” which was also good although I think The Dark Ability is my favorite so far.

Engrossing

An engrossing read, the characters develop along with their stories and skills. This is a fun read that traps you in their world, and you don't want to leave.

Another awesome series

Love DK Holmberg's books. This one was so good and I am sorry it is over. I am always anxious for more from this author and he never disappoints... This is a clean read and is full of action that is not gory but is very engaging. The characters are believable and the plot always leaves me guessing. This is not about an evil assassin... Just read it. You will like it of you like well written, clean fantasy.
