I recently discovered the cozy mystery genre and have really enjoyed reading books within it. When I saw Murder and Spice as a free title I thought I would check it out. It was a cozy mystery and the main character was a witch, so it combined fantasy elements with this new genre that I have been enjoying. Unfortunately, Murder and Spice did not live up to my expectations.
One of the things I really like about cozy mysteries is how charming the characters are, but in Murder and Spice they all fell a bit flat. There was a town gossip, but the main characters had very little depth to them and I didn't find myself getting attached to them, or even really care what happened to them. Cassy, the main character, was supposed to be a witch, but she hardly did anything witchy at all. It seemed like she was only a witch in name so the book could be advertised as including a witchy element so people like me would pick it up.
The plot was decent, but not really captivating. The writing didn't keep me reading and the book was rather easy to set down. I did enjoy reading it, but I found it to be quite forgettable. I have no intentions to see what else Wendy Meadows has written. I haven't had a ton of luck with finding great cozy mysteries lately, there seems to be some hidden gems within the genre though, and I hope to find a few of them.
I got thrown out of the story a few times by bad grammar where I had to re-read a sentence several times to understand what it was supposed to mean.
While the story follows many current tropes for a cozy mystery it was too short to really develop them. As a result I felt like the author was just ticking the boxes: female store owner - check possible romantic relationship - check paranormal overtones - check food - check Some authors do a good job blending these, but this one didn't.
This was free on Kindle. I am not interested in following the series.
I enjoyed getting to know Cassy and Dot in this new to me series. It's kinda cool that Dot's the only one in town who knows about Cassy being a witch, and she even got to do a very small spell to help get herself out of a situation where she was doing some snooping for the murder case.
Cassy and Officer Tillman were pretty cute together eventually, and I hope there's a good friendship or more in store for them. There was an interesting twist at the end which made for an off-page showdown, but we at least knew it happened. I was just happy Cassy didn't get into any trouble, lol. I'll be interested in reading more of this fun-sounding series! Think I'll explore some book blurbs for the rest of the series!
Before I realized I already had the book, I got a copy from BookSprout to review, so my opinions are completely my own.
I like witch stories, but this didn't have much to do with witchcraft! It was disappointing in many respects besides that. The main character seemed to jump from thought to thought with very little follow through. She certainly was in a rush to make friends with James, the new guy in town! The whole book seemed to lack depth and the necessary background we needed to understand the characters. There were some good twists in the mystery, and I like the basic concept. Needs a little more work however. 3 1/2 stars.
Very well written cozy mystery with a great mystery. I loved the characters of the town and will be reading more books from this series and the author.
Murder & Spice #1 - I found this to be a typical, simplistic cozy, which had the same set up (formula) as found in Cream of Sweet, with the exception the main character is a bumbling, ditzy witch. The other characters were underdeveloped and dithering making it hard to care about any of the them, including the Texan. The silly storyline and poor writing style weren't for me. 2*
Chocolate series: Cream of Sweet #1 - This is my first read by this author and I was disappointed. The name of the shop is horrible, although it's explained. Besides the shop's name, I found I didn't care at all about the undeveloped and dithering characters or the simplistic storyline or the poor caliber of the writing style. 2*
Death Over Spilt Chowder #7 - After reading two books by this author already and being disappointed, I decided to give her one more shot since this book is her latest release in her Chocolate Cozy series. Forcing myself to read at least fifty percent, I had difficulty immersing myself into the simplistic story or liking the dithering characters and the worn out plot, along with ignoring the corrections needed.
The attempted PC that's forced on readers telling them to behave a certain way seems to be a favorite theme for Ms. Meadows; tell your story, don't instruct your readers how they should respond. Your characters aren't consistent with their actions when following PC anyway. Needs editing, especially titles, if using old expressions, use them correctly and check on the definition of a word before it's usage, same for hyphened words. I found this book on Booksprout. 2* Chocolate series end.
Murder & Spice is the first book in Wendy Meadows new series Nether Edge. In it, we are introduced to Cassy and Dot. Cassy is a witch and nobody except Dot knows, however it didn't seem to be much of a plot point with so little magic involved. That's something I'll assume is explored more as the town, characters, storylines and relationships develop further into the series.
As a series starter, the book was not bad, it was entertaining and a pretty quick read. I finished it in one sitting. It's a bit of a variation from your typical cozy mystery in some respects and not so much in others. Our want-to-be sleuth finds herself front and center in a murder, she has chemistry with our man in a uniform which leads readers to guess will they, won't they? I wasn't overly invested in this aspect but again, as the characters have a chance to develop I expect that to change.
I wish there was a bit more character development but understand the author's choice to give us something quick to catch our interest. There were enough elements going on and a bit of a surprise that I think many readers will be happy with this story and want to continue onto the next.

Cassandra is the owner of a small town spice shop she also happens to be a witch if a bit underachieving with her magic. Havenholm has an old world air about it as if it hasn’t changed much since the first settlers got off the ships. Cassy is for progress as long as it doesn’t hurt the townsfolk. A meeting is called by the local busybody and representatives from the company buying up land are their. However their cold attitudes, and big corporate spiel turn the atmosphere ugly in a hurry. As Cassy and her friends/ employees leave the toxic meeting they are distressed to find that one of the corporate lawyers is dead in her car. Cassy just can’t let it go and so she starts investigating and finds more than she bargained for. An excellent example of the cozy mystery. An adorable and quirky town filled with characters in both senses of the word. A twisty mystery with lots of surprises. And a warm, endearing and likable main character in Cassy. If you love cozies give this one a read you won’t be disappointed!

MURDER & SPICE is A Nether Edge Cozy Mystery and a new series from Wendy Meadows with another interesting group of characters. Ms. Meadows has a knack for creating strange little towns with quirky characters and fun murder mysteries. Get ready for some wry humor in this fun short cozy story!
Havenhelm is an old fashioned town with lots of charm and the residents want to keep it that way. Cassie is a witch with unreliable magic who owns a spice shop that sells a wide variety of spices and unusual ingredients for baking or spell making.
When outside developers start buying up property, residents rebel and a dead body soon shows up. Cassie thinks of herself as a sleuth and something doesn't feel right about the murder. So she looks where the police don't. There’s a surprise twist at the end that is great!
CAUTION: A Cozy mystery is lighter tone and many comforting elements thrown in with murder done offstage. It's supposed to be an easy to read, family fun story. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Cassandra Dean lives in Havenholm, the owner of a spice shop. She is a witch but in a bumbling ineffective sort of way. When developers for Newmark come to town looking to buy up property, the citizens are rightfully worried. A Town Meeting is called and things don’t go well with people getting upset and angry and insulting words exchanged.
Cassandra heads out to leave the meeting. But she notices a car parked oddly and walks over to it. Mr. Willows, one of the lawyers, was coming out of the town hall and shouted at her about approaching his car. By then, Cassandra had reached it and, in the front seat, she saw one of the speakers from Newmark, Jane Fontaine, who had been insulting the townspeople earlier, now slumped against the steering wheel -- dead! Can she find out who killed the woman and why?
Murder & Spice is a new series by Wendy Meadows. Cassandra "Cassy" is a witch and the owner of the Spicery. She lives with Herzog, her cat familiar, above the Spicery. Dorothy McGuiness, one of her employees, is the only one in town who knows Cassy is a witch. Patty is her other employee. Mrs. Bonnie Hamswell is going around town posting notices for a town meeting to discuss the big developer trying to buy everything in Nether Edge. After the meeting Jane Fontaine, representing the developer, Newmark, is found dead in her car. Cassy is convinced she was murdered. Cassy begins investigating the case trying to help Sheriff Phillip Noyce and the new deputy, James Jones. I enjoyed the new characters and cannot wait to read the next book in the series. I received an advance copy of this book from Booksprout. This is my honest opinion.
This 1st installment shows a series with potential, but left me with a lot of questions and wondering, if, perhaps, this were an early draft. I know the main character, Cassy, grew up in this small town, but her immediate acceptance by the new deputy, into the morgue, and by the police chief at the police station when she solves the mystery, well, it strained my willful suspension of disbelief muscles. A lot. And then, the final chapter with Herzog talking to Cassy just blindsided me. I thought I had a bit of a handle on things and suddenly Cassy is having a full blown conversation with her cat--who, really hadn't been involved much in the story at all. With some interesting characters and a.fun premise, I am hoping the next installment lives up to the potential. This was a freebie for me from The Fussy Librarian.
This was a book that once you got started you just had to finish. a Even though it was a short story it was suspenseful. Cassandra was a witch and owner of The Nether Edge Spicery shop in Havenholm and part time sleuthing. When developers come into town it is not welcome by everyone. They want to keep the small hamlet as is. But after a town meeting and one of the developers is discovered dead by Cassie she has to know if her instincts are right and it's murder. Then a second murder happens and she knows they are related somehow. When she visits the coffee shop she instinctively has her answer. This was a quick read and very enjoyable. For a witch Cassie doesn't practice much magic. I hope she does in the coming books. I will be reading more of the series to come. “Murder & Spice” is the first instalment in the “Nether Edge” by Wendy Meadows, an entertaining cozy mystery series with a witchy subplot. The perfect whodunnit to enjoy with a beverage of choice on a cozy afternoon/evening. Cassandra Dean (MC) is an equal parts relatable and charming character, whose penchant to clumsiness makes her all the more endearing. However, make not mistakes Cassandra might don’t have hold of her ‘witchy’ abilities, but she is very adept at unearthing the secrets of Havenholm and solving the mystery.
At barely 100 pages, the story hit that sweet spot between short tale and novella, that make it the perfect lecture for an evening of leisure.
The small town of Havenholm has attracted the interest of an out-of-town investor wanting to make it a resort town. That idea rubs the townspeople the wrong way and they get a big meeting together that ends up in a major protest. One of the people working with the investor ends up dead and then a few days later the woman that set up the protest also ended up dead. Cassie, the owner of the Spicery and a witch ends up helping with the investigation and she becomes interested in the new deputy in town, Deputy Jones.

Cassandra owns the Spicery in a small town, loves mysteries and puzzles, and is a witch. A developer group comes to town and at the town meeting, she finds one of them dead in a car. The characters are adorable and quirky, fun and determined. The storyline is fast paced but detailed enough to keep your nose in the book until the end. Loved the joint effort of those involved and the support when things get dicey. The ending fits perfectly with a few surprises. Can not wait to read more of this group.

Cassy owns the spice shop in town and she is a witch, but not a really good one. It is a small town where everyone knows everyone else and their life stories. There is a corporation in town buying up property and the town folk are having a town hall meeting to discuss. Then the woman in charge shows up dead and Cassy finds the body. Along with her cohorts Dotty and Patty they are going to figure this out. There is a new man in town too, a deputy and Cassy doesn't mind spending time with him at all. This is cute cozy read and I will definitely enjoy more by this author.
This is a new series for Ms. Meadows with another interesting group of characters: Cassy – store owner and a witch, Cassy’s friends and employees Dot and Patty. The other main characters are Sheriff Noyce and new Deputy Jones.
This is an enjoyable short story about a witch who owns a shop, the Spicery who also sees herself as a sleuth when a death occurs after a very contentious town meeting. There’s a plot twist at the end that is great! I can’t wait for the next in this series.

The tiny hamlet of Haverholm has attracted a group of developers seeking fresh real estate. Unfortunately not everyone thinks this is a good thing as anger and rumors spin around town. Cassandra is no stranger to these rumors and anger. No one knew what to expect from her when she opened her shop and some didn't want her there. However now she's just like an old hand and her store, the Spicery, is a staple located by the coffee shop. She is enlisted to help get to the bottom of the trouble.

Cassy is a great character. She pretends to be a witch, but she actually is a witch. Her spice shop sells all manner of ingredients which can be used to bake or work with spells. Havenhelm is an old fashioned town with lots of charm and the residents want to keep it that way. This is a fun and interesting story that you will love. Ms. Meadows is a wonderful writer and you will enjoy her writing style. Highly recommend this book.
This was a great start to a new series. The storyline and the characters were wonderful. Cassy found herself in the middle of not one but 2 potential murders. She used her instincts and realized who had killed both individuals and why. Her friend Dot in the mean time was trying to set her up on a date with the town’s newest police officer, The outcome of the investigation was unexpected.

Wendy has done another fantastic job with a cozy mystery that sweeps you up and holds your attention from the start. An enjoyable story line you can't put down as you work to solve the mystery before you reach the end. The characters are just as enjoyable as the story line and work well together solving the mystery. . I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Murder & Spice is the first book in Nether Edge Cozy Mystery Series.

WENDY MEADOWS IS THE AUTHOR OF THE MYSTERY NOVEL MURDER & SPICE. THIS WAS AN INTERESTING AND CREATIVE NOVEL DESCRIBING A SPICY MISSING PERSONS REPORT. WHEN EVERYONE STARTED FORGETTING TO WASH UP FOR LUNCHTIME, THE SPICES BEGAN TO CREATE AN AROMA FOR MEALTIME. WITH A PAUCITY OF SPEECH AND AN ARROGANT AIR AT DINNERTIME, IT IS EITHER A SOLVED MYSTERY OR A PRECARIOUS FINAL SOLUTION. WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT?
This is the second book by this author that I have read and the first in the series. The main character is Cassy, who is a witch and spice shop owner. She goes to a town hall meeting and ends up finding the dead body of a woman who had stormed out of the meeting. With a little help she figures out who did it. Loved it.
A short, fast-paced mystery with fun and quirky characters, and lots of twists and turns. I did keep forgetting that Cassandra was a witch until it was needed for the plot, so that part didn't work very well, and the whole book really could have used another pass by an editor, but I'd give the author another try - possibly even in this series, as the characters were really fun.
This is a Nether Edge Cozy Mystery book 1 for Cassandra Dean. Well Ms. Dean sure did find a few mysteries and she did really well at putting all the clues together too. I can not wait to find out what happens next.

This book had so much promise. The first few pages had me intrigued. But the more I read into the book and the lack of action had me losing interest. The prose and pacing definitely need some reworking because it has so much potential. I hope to enjoy this authors next book.

I think that Murder & Spice is good start for Wendy's new series because her main character was so interesting. Cassy was quirky and fun. I think that the opening chapter is what really drew me into the story. I found that it really defined Cassy's world.
