Rate this book
Dark things are dwelling in Jotham, Texas. Malicious forces are seen emerging from the sinister house on Oak Lee Road…

With little memory of the events that took the lives of his friends, Bobby Weeks tries to move on with his life, and finds a job at a warehouse on Galveston Island. The evil in Jotham won’t leave him behind, though. Strangers from the cursed town find him, offering information about what happened to his friends. It all leads back to Baelo University…back to Jotham.

Luna Blanche has always been gifted, but now she must use those gifts to save Bobby…

Luna goes to the Mississippi Delta to take care of her dying grandmother. She misses Bobby, and when she attempts to see Bobby through her mind, all she finds is a deadly future. Fearing his life is in danger, she leaves the Delta and searches for him in Jotham.

Neville and Boris Petry want nothing more than the picturesque American Dream…

After Boris accepts a new job teaching at Baelo University, the Petrys move to Jotham to finally live out their dream. Following a drunken faculty party, Neville discovers she is pregnant. She should be ecstatic, but dreadful dreams lead her to feel as if something is wrong with the baby, her husband…and the school.

Four destinies bound on a collision course, a plot conceived in the shadows of Jotham…and an evil biding its time…waiting for them all.

Review: CONCEIVING by Thomas S. Flowers (Subdue #3)

In many ways, I am very fond of CONCEIVING. I appreciate the reader's opportunity to get to better understand and empathize with the characters of Bobby and Luna, plus some newly-introduced characters. I really enjoy the Voodoo of Luna's paternal grandmother, Memaw. The author superbly paints the aura, the "feel," of the rural South, nowadays, and back in the 1950's and 1960', when often the choices were: vote and die, or maybe don't vote and die anyway, just because no one can abide your color. Reading these passages is as clear as living it. And of course, that includes lynching.

After reading in sequence all three of the novels in this engrossing series, I just have one question: Could this be a 7 book series? I don't want to say goodbye!

I received this book from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

It was pretty interesting, this one I can say it's mostly two in one.

You can say it deepens the events in the other books and explains some things we wanted to know and on the other hand it's an amazing anchor for the next book later.

I liked that it went deeper on Luna's heritage and gifts and in her personality and relations with others.

A nice story to bound them all together.

"I have said it before and I will say it again and keep saying it until more and more of you listen to me; Thomas S Flowers is a writer of sublime horror. Horror that will scare the pants off you. Horror that will mesmerise you. Horror that will leave you breathless and begging for more."

This book was a wicked read. Luna is thrown into a world full of crazy but when her memaw tells her of their past and heritage, it sets her into a world of Luna trying to right wrongs and set things straight. The characters within this book were spectacular. Bobby is one of my favs and I really think he was dealt the wrong stick. When you factor in Neville and Boris and the Wormi, you'll get the shivers. John Turner is a whole other aspect. Together these character bring this book to life. You won't believe the way this book ends. Excellent writing.

I received a copy of this book as part of the Conceiving publicity tour for review purposes. This is in no way reflected in my opinion of this anthology. I did not receive any form of compensation for my review.

Conceiving is part three of the Subdue series, since I hadn't read the first two books I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. This story has so much going on, it has a cult of crazies, bizarre insectoid creatures, voodoo, a zombie-ish golem, and werewolves. It should have been a hot mess,,, but somehow it works. Think Rosemary's Baby meets An American Werewolf In London with creepy, nasty bug things. Luna, Bobby, Boris and Neville are engaging characters. I enjoyed getting to know them on their twisting journey to the small town of Jotham. The story draws you in with just the right amount of heart to balance out the bloody and somewhat gruesome action leading up to a fiery conclusion. An entertaining 4 star read.

When I receive this book I was a bit worried about this being Book #3 Since I have not read the first 2. I can say this is a stand alone book. I like how he describe each person and scenery It was a slow start reading then it started picking up. Love How there was 3 different family stories then at the end they all combine in one.

Disclaimer.
I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the narrator, in exchange for an unbiased review.

What I liked about the book -
Even though this isn't a fully standalone book (3rd book of the series) and has references to earlier books' story elements, this still works as a standalone book. It's creepy as ever and doesn't let you relax for even a little bit. The spooky atmosphere is set from the very beginning and it keeps getting more n more chilling as the story progresses. You'll find yourself freaking out, or shocked or sweating throughout the book. All in all, a great listen.

What I disliked about the book -
Nothing specific that I can think of.

Narration -
Narration by Rick Gregory was a good match for the content. His voice sets the perfect mood for the story and had me spellbound.

I love horror stories, and really loved this one. Great read!! Bobby and Luna are excellent characters, and I'm looking forward to reading/listening to others in the series. Great story, great narration. And I'm glad it's considered stand-alone so I wasn't lost without having yet read the others, but I certainly will! All twisting together, it really was a very enjoyable listen. Would definitely recommend it to others! :)
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The Subdue series has been great so far! A very creepy story with werewolves and ancient evils. I'm hoping the author writes more in this series. Bobby and Luna's story can't end like this! Excellent narration by Rick Gregory! I'm glad too see the author continues to use the same narrator throughout the series.

I think one thing I love about this series in general is how it sort of shirks the expected three act structure of a trilogy and makes it work beautifully. It's impressive how the action and tension seems to tick upwards with each volume. Each book seems to have its own unique feel to it while still being part of a larger narrative.

I enjoyed the little winks to classic horror favorites in this book. Besides werewolves, we also got a bit of voodoo culture as well as Frankenstein. There was even a hint of Rosemary's Baby in there.

This has been a great series with a ton of fantastic imagery and creepy scenes. I think that Flowers has done a superb job establishing Jotham, Texas as his own answer to Derry, Maine and I for one, am glad I took the trip.
