Come with your brokenness, your celebration, and your worries, but most of all come and eat.
In today's busy and often superficial world, we all crave something deeper and truer. Maybe it's relationships that go beyond the surface or gatherings that allow for joy and pain. Bri McKoy tells us this is within reach! All we need is a table, open hearts, and a simple invitation: come and eat.
McKoy invites us to discover how a common dining-room table can be transformed into a place where brokenness falls away to reveal peace and fellowship. Whether the table is laid with bounty or with meager offerings, whether it is surrounded by the Body of Christ or homeless, broken souls, she shows us that healing begins when we say, "Come in. I may not know you, but I know your maker. And so I offer you my heart."
For all those who are hungry and craving more of God's kingdom in their homes, Come and Eat offers recipes, tips, and questions to jumpstart conversation, while reminding us that fellowship in God's love is always the most remembered, most cherished nourishment. Because when we make room for others, we make room for God, and our homes become a vibrant source of life, just as he means them to be.

Love, love, love the heart of this book and the way Bri weaves her life story examples into models of opening our homes and hearts to others. So many wonderful and thought provoking ideas, questions, and gentle nudges to throw even the simplest of meals together and gather new and old friends together for discussion and growth.
Each chapter ends with one of her favorite recipes (the roast is amazing!!!) along with several questions to mull regarding the chapter topic. Great book to read with your spouse and keep handy in the years to come.
Come and Eat is about Christian hospitality, to invite others to dine at your table literally, coming together over delicious meals, as well enriching and encouraging each other with spiritual food. Inviting others to your table can strengthen your friendships, and your relationship with God.
What I loved most about this was how heartfelt it seemed. It was like the author was speaking to readers as a friend meeting for coffee. I also really enjoyed all the recipes throughout!
I received a copy of this book from Harper Collins BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review.
This book is one of those books I'll be going back to for years to come. Reading the stories inside made me feel, for the first time in a long time, the heartbeat of a loving Father wanting to engage with a hurting world. It has the ability to reawaken a desire to serve others and share the love of Jesus.
I really enjoyed this book! I feel that it totally lined up with my heart for people at my table! I did feel that it got a bit repetitive. I still enjoyed it!

The first chapter of this book fell flat and then something happened, I’m not sure if I changed or the book changed, by the end I did not want it to end. I will definitely be thinking about this for awhile.
This book was lovely, raw, humbling, and inspiring. As soon as we are settled into our new house I’m going to start the 21 day challenge with my family. So many things I have been convicted about in the past year Bri brought up in this book. It’s one I want to read again because I flew through it so fast. It was biblical, honest, fun, and encouraging.
Bri has become one of my favorite follows in the last year, and my heart was moved by reading her words here. Honest & vulnerable & encouraging - loved this book.
Just beautiful. While I don't see myself using her recommended prayers or recipes, her words were absolutely everything I was hoping for. I feel encouraged and motivated to use my table to further the kingdom of God. ❤
Beautiful book filled with life-giving words and recipes to make your mouth water. Bri has a way of telling stories that make you feel like she is right there, sharing her heart with you. This book will encourage you to make your table a place of enjoying simple, good food and conversations that can help make our world a better place.
I was pleasantly surprised at the richness found in the pages of this book. It’s not just an idea book of ways to get your family and friends around your table it’s so much more. I liked the authors' transparency as she admits she was not found in the kitchen growing up since she battled health issues. She didn't ponder ways to create meals and food was not the number one thing on her mind. Meals were a way of getting what her body needed to heal. The game changer came in the first year of marriage. With her husband in the picture and the hopes of a family in the future, she grew to "like" being in the kitchen. Actually fell in love with being there. The problem then was how to combat her worn out feeling at the end of the day. Looking at meal time as another thing to check off her to do list.
The thing that really turned things around for this author was what she discovered in scripture, which I found fascinating and had not looked at meal time this way before. She says, sharing a meal is, “about securing relationships and partnering with God to show more of His love to a hurting world.”
“…Sharing a meal together with someone can be deeply personal. If you take the time to feed another person, if you nourish their body, they naturally start to reveal their heart. Food is the answer to a basic need, and it can become a gateway to the need: redemption from a loving Savior.”
She goes on to talk about how Jesus went to people’s homes sat at their tables to share a simple meal with a few or thousands feeding them fish and loaves of bread even had wine to overflow at a wedding. I had never looked at Jesus and how he was intentional in how he went about meeting people and feeding them.
This author does give ideas to readers in creating special times for friends and family; as each chapter ends with a Prayer, a question, and a recipe for your time at the table, What I found helpful was in the appendix section all the recipes are listed together, and a shopping list is there for you to use. She also talks about your vision for the table. Plus, several other topics such as, “A celebration of love and grace around the everyday table.” This author gave me a new perspective and appreciation for intentionally eating together. It doesn’t have to be complicated or stressed. She also shows how fellowship with one another feeds our soul and is just as important as the nourishment we feed our bodies. I highly recommend this book to everyone. There is so much in here.

Bri McKoy posted a photo on some promo materials with this quote that is also found in the book: “I believe everyone has at least one life-defining moment that happens at a table—and probably many more—but we won’t experience those powerful moments if we’re not showing up in the first place.”
McKoy has done the world a great service by writing a book that challenges us to get out of our comfort zones and invite strangers to our tables. She doesn't just convict us and leave us. She has written a wonderful “WHY,” “HOW-TO,” “WHAT NOT TO BE AFRAID OF” that includes Prayers, Recipes (Shopping List included!) Conversation Starters, Games and other valuable information to make your opening your home and, more importantly, your TABLE, an incredible experience.
She explains that HOSPITALITY translated from the Greek means “love of strangers.” McKoy shares this verse to bring this point home: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” (Hebrews 13:2) She ends this passage with the following words which to me sums up her message of the entire book:
“We look at someone whose background we might not know, whose trials we’ve not yet heard of, whose sins we have not yet seen, and we say, ‘Come a little closer. You look familiar. You look like God.’”

As humans we crave relationships and meaningful interaction. But in our busy, stressed out lives we often miss opportunities to connect with those around us. The author draws from personal experiences to share how she enriched her life by gathering around the table to learn more about her friends and family and establish those meaningful connections. Each chapter begins with the thoughts and stories from the author. She pulls in scripture and the experiences of others as well. Sprinkled through out the chapter is helpful tips on how to implement what she is talking about. The chapter ends with a prayer for the table, questions for the table, and a recipe for the table. The book ends with several appendixes that have resources, thoughts, and a 21-day challenge.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author is authentic and down to earth. I didn't feel like the end result was unattainable. The questions and challenges fit with my family, but were just generic enough that I know they will work in the future as well. I've made a couple of the recipes so far. My family loved them. The instructions were easy enough to follow and the end result was delicious. I think every family would benefit from reading this book.

This lovely book has been my devotional read for the last two weeks. I have laughed out loud and cried tears over Bri’s sweet stories and transparent testimony. This book is one part testimony, one part call to action and one part how-to. I cannot express how lovely and refreshing this book was. In a Christian world full of catch-phrases like “missional “ and “target outreach” this book offers a quieter, gentler, date I say more biblical approach to loving our neighbors and spreading the Gospel. My husband and I had been praying through the verse that Paul tells us to live quiet lives. How does that jive with the current aggressive, mercenary evangelism culture of some churches and the apathetic, lazy lack-of-love culture of others? We had just been saying, what if this is how families spread the Gospel, through investing deeply in the community they are in, practicing hospitality, and letting our quietness be the space for the Light to shine? Then into that question steps Bri!! She and her husband decided to love out of the home God placed them in, using their dinner table as the most powerful evangelism and discipleship tool in their arsenal. And it works!! It changes people! First and foremost Bri and her husband. I am so excited to put these into action. Especially taking her encouragement that it need not be fancy or perfect to be loving and warm.
Come and Eat: A Celebration of Love and Grace Around the Everyday Table is the first book by Bri McKoy that I have read. I was not familiar with Bri before reading this book and now I am following her on social media and her blog.
Come and Eat: A Celebration of Love and Grace Around the Everyday Table is a fantastic book. It is a great reminder to all of us about how fellow shipping around a table can be a remarkable tool for reaching out to others. I remember going to a church when I was young that after church you were always invited to someone's house for lunch or you invited them. It was a great way to meet newcomers to the church. This book reminded me of how important fellowship with others can be.
Come and Eat: A Celebration of Love and Grace Around the Everyday Table provides the tools that you need to have a warm and inviting table to invite others to. The book is filled with biblical inspiration to assist you. I loved the personal stories in the book and I'm sure you will too.
Highly recommend Come and Eat: A Celebration of Love and Grace Around the Everyday Table.
"A table seasoned with room for questions brings freedom... A table seasoned with humble listening and gracious responses will allow us to ask hard questions but will convey 'I am asking this question because I want to be more like Jesus.'... These conversations begin and thrive in the safety of our table."
Bri McKoy takes us on a journey of her heart and home through her stories, experiences, and growth as a hostess with the desire to emulate the love of Jesus. She is honest in such a refreshing way that is easy to relate.
This book is highly underrated in the sense that, more people need to read and rate it! It's fantastic. Bri went above and beyond in this debut book of hers. It's perfect for Christians who want to engage in radical hospitality and extend love to their neighbors of the world.
I have been invited to tables like the one Bri is trying to create with her husband, and I know I want to be like that too. This is a great place to orient your thinking of how to be the salt and light through inviting people to "Come & Eat"!!
Come & Eat: A Celebration of Love and Grace Around the Everyday Table is a fun but thoughtful read applicable to those new to cooking/hosting as well as those who are more seasoned. It will be a book I reference long after my initial reading.
Bri McKoy not only inspires us to consider the heart behind hospitality, but she gives practical and fun ways to encourage readers to develop more authentic relationships with those around them and to reach out to others.
The book gave me much to consider about how I approach the table in my own home as well as how I invite others to join me. And to aid in that process, Bri outlines a 21-Day Adventure at the Table, which includes a daily recipe, prayer, and discussion prompts. She even includes shopping lists for each day!
The recipes are simple, well-written, and many of them are Paleo or grain-free.
Food lives a double life. On the one hand, it's simple fuel that gives our bodies energy. On the other hand, food sustains us spiritually, connects us emotionally to friends and family, and marks the passage of time and moments in our lives with joy, solemnity, and meaning.
It's the latter life that Bri McKoy focuses on in this entertaining and uplifting book about the meaning of food in our lives, how it sustains us and how we can use it to bring us together. The religious Christian theme is very strong here, so non-believers will not enjoy this. The book contains recipes, thoughts on food, memories, and guides to coming together with friends and family and putting meaning into meals.
Thanks to the author and publisher for a review copy.
Come and Eat is a book that will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and inviting strangers to the dinner table. McKoy has created a step by step plan that includes prayers, recipes (shopping list included), conversation starters, and other important information that will help you to open your home and table to strangers. Just like the Bible verse, Hebrews 13:2, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” You never know! I really like the scripture and recipes throughout this book. Along with all the stories the author shares from her own experiences. This book is a real eye opener and will make you rethink how you treat others. I think this book would make a great housewarming gift or a great gift for yourself.
I loved the simplicity of this book and yet the tremendous surrender it takes to actually be intentional with this kind of lifestyle. This is truly what God has called me to and it was just the encouragement I needed to keep pursuing it. I appreciated her authenticity and vulnerability throughout every story. There is such beauty that happens around the table. It is the perfectly imperfect space to create an atmosphere for God to show up. It is safe and full of love. It welcomes everyone, honors story and says you belong. Our family is committed to leaving a legacy of love and it happens as we gather around the table with a simple, and beautiful, and continual laying down of oneself to be intentional with what He has given us. This is the making of a life poured out.
This is such an important book. Why? It reminds us to look for joy in the every day and to open our tables - and our hearts - to those around us. I can't recommend it enough.
This book is honest. This book is like a how to guide to being like Jesus by loving people through food and conversation. Gathering around a table is easier than knocking on doors. But it doesn't always feel easy. Bri gives you what you need to love well.
Oh, and there are recipes! You can't lose.
So whether you want to learn how to be comfortable in the kitchen or desire to be the hostess with the mostess, get this book.
This is one of those non-fiction books that you pick up and feel like you were pulled up to the kitchen table with the author. Bri has a honest approach to life as she engages you in story, encouragement and a lovely way of giving practical ways to create your own hospitality and ministry to others. It is done in a relevant way to women of our culture and time period, complete with Paleo recipes that can be served with carbs or without. You will find your mouth watering as the soul feels fed as well. You will find yourself laughing, tearing up and licking your lips.
I received this book from Book Look Bloggers. The opinions contained herein are my own.
I was honored to receive an advance copy of Bri McKoy's book, Come & Eat. This is a book that you will find yourself underlining sentences and paragraphs, dog-earring pages, and wanting to pass along to your friends. While this book is certainly about gathering around the table and sharing in both food and fellowship, it is also a call to be challenged to create community and a table among not just those who are like us, but with those who are different.
Filled with stories, thought provoking questions, and yummy recipes, Come & Eat is worth the read.
I received a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. This book contains stories, recipes, & prayers to inspire readers to invite all to the table with faith and love. As I read this book, I was reminded of all the wonderful people and stories I've enjoyed at my table through the years. This book is beautiful reminder that there is much power in the act of sharing food. I look forward to trying some of the recipes. I felt the book needed a few more meatless recipes but overall I really enjoyed it.
This was my first read from Bri McKoy. I wasn't familiar with her before this read, but she definitely has a talent. This book was remarkable. I love how inspiring and down to Earth it was. It was a steady paced read that reminded me just how important it is to step away from busy day to day life and connect with others- especially around the table. It had funny part and serious parts that made it an overall amazing read. I definitely recommend this read to others!
Disclosure: I received this book for review purposes only. All opinions remain my own.
This is a lovely book on how to cultivate the gift of hospitality from a Biblical perspective. Inviting family, friends and "strangers" to one's table, offering simple, nourishing food in a warm, convivial, unthreatening (i.e. non preachy) atmosphere is one of the best ways to care for others and share the love of Christ. The book offers many anecdotes, recipes and uncomplicated, creative ideas for recapturing an "art" that has sadly fallen by the wayside in our disjointed, fast-paced society.
I won an ARC of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.
Homespun and hearty, short but sweet, Bri McKoy’s “Come and Eat” is primed not only for food lover’s, but people lovers. The inherent qualities in gathering around the table and enjoying a meal may seem obvious, but their attributes often escape us. The author takes our hand and walks us through the ins and outs and why-you-should’s of opening your home and heart by inviting someone (anyone!) to share a meal with you. McKoy’s instruction is brief but sincere and her advice is uncannily kind. It’s a quick and easy read, and the Audible narration is not lacking.
2021: I think the author of this books is great. Bri is so fun on Instagram and I even recently took her online cooking class. But after a couple of chapters of reading this book I just never picked it back up and eventually it was due back at the library. Maybe some day I will return to it but the winter of 2020-2021 during COVID was not the right time to read about gathering people at the table. Which is maybe hypocritical of me because I’ve read other books about gathering during the pandemic and loved them, but it just wasn’t the right time for this book.
I have enjoyed following Bri on Instagram, and her bubbly and positive personality make me smile. I can definitely hear that personality come through her writing. And it’s obvious how passionate she is about using food and hospitality the further the kingdom of God. That being said, I found the book to be a little repetitive and full of hyperbole. Her writing style is a little too dramatic/overly descriptive of feelings for me. All this to say, I just don’t think this was the right book for ME. I still see this book as having a lot to say and a lot of value for others. It just wasn’t my bag.
