Tozer on the Almighty God by A.W. Tozer is a 366-day devotional that dwells on the awesomeness of the Almighty God and His manifest glory. God's awesomeness is often brought out in human speech with the verbal expression of oath taking. Human vocabulary is far too humble and insufficient to properly articulate the words upon being touched by the Spirit of God Almighty. The power of God is awesome, vast and incomprehensible. This 366-day devotional will help to acquaint you with the complexity of God's character and the power of His grace. In order to satisfy your hunger for a genuine encounter with the Creator, Tozer says there must be humility of spirit. He reminds us of our need for humility when he says that Jesus was "bruised and wounded for our iniquities." The penalty paid on the cross was great, and our love for Him should reflect that. Tozer's daily meditations in this book challenge the believer to become more acquainted with the Triune God and His mysterious ways. He inspires the reader to repent to restore the Divine love in our hearts, as well as worship him constantly! Tozer proclaims the mercy of God, saying that God is love who ever does us good!
Aiden Wilson Tozer was an American evangelical pastor, speaker, writer, and editor. After coming to Christ at the age of seventeen, Tozer found his way into the Christian & Missionary Alliance denomination where he served for over forty years. In 1950, he was appointed by the denomination's General Council to be the editor of "The Alliance Witness" (now "Alliance Life").
Born into poverty in western Pennsylvania in 1897, Tozer died in May 1963 a self-educated man who had taught himself what he missed in high school and college due to his home situation. Though he wrote many books, two of them, "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy" are widely considered to be classics.
A.W. Tozer and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, had seven children, six boys and one girl.
As always, Tozer's writing never ceases to amaze me. Yup, this isn't a review for a fiction book, it is for a 365 day devotional from one of the most inspiring writers ever.
Something about Tozer makes me think of C.S. Lewis's writing. It is deep, profound, and he doesn't hide behind the bush...when he wants to say something he says it.
This devos make you ponder about your relationship with Jesus and what you can do to strengthen it. Tozer's writings are not that easy to digest though. They are not meant to be read in 5 minutes, but instead to think on them sentence by sentence.
This devotional is beautiful. The daily devotionals are small but powerful. I can't wait to read this devotional all the way through. Tozer is truly an anointed author filled with the Holy Spirit.
ps. The formatting of the ebook was not good. There were missing letters and new days started in the middle of a page becoming very confusing. If you do decide to get this book, I would recommend the physical book.
When I saw this book was up for review, I didn't hesitate! Tozer, a name synonymous with classic Christian thought, writes about God making for a winning combination! As I began this review, I thought I would open my Kindle to read "just one more" before I sit down and put my thoughts on paper. God has a way of speaking to us when we least expect it! The devo that grabbed my attention was titled, "Vacate the Throne Room of Your Heart" based on Colossians 1:18. We (I) want to do great things for God, but how can we? How can regular, workaday Christians rise to heroic heights? With families to support, our lot seems to be cast in the mundane routine of the commonplace. The simple answer: vacate the throne room of our hearts and enthrone Jesus there. Make Him our all in all with the desired result of the ego becoming less and less. While many of us long to do great things for God, devotions like this show the greatest thing we can do for God is to abdicate the throne of our lives and sit at the feet of Father investing time in knowing Him more intimately. I love this devotional! While the devotions are short, they pack a huge "wallop" of truth and wisdom from God's Word. The application prayer at the end, ties up things rather nicely. I agree with another reviewer that the format of the ebook leaves much to be desired. Missing and misplaced letters detracts from the wonderful content. I will purchase a physical copy of the book so as not to miss anything God wants to teach me. This would also be a great book for gift giving. Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of Tozer on the Almighty in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.
In this reprint, Ron Eggert has compiled short devotions drawn from Tozer's many works. I don't usually like daily devotionals; they often feel surface and predictable. Tozer is none of these things, and although the excerpts are short enough to be read on a rushed morning, almost always I was left with something to ponder. Occasionally Tozer's mid-twentieth century mentality felt dated, but mostly the readings seemed timeless, able to draw the reader deeper into who God is.
You can not read Tozer without thinking: He loved God. He really wanted to please him. It is why I took this devotional (even when I´m not very into devotional books, why then am I chose to give this a try? Because I have enjoyed Tozer´s books a lot in the past. I see him as a very passionate and deep thinker. I remember I shared before how much I enjoy Tozer´s books).
In this devotional book, you have a passage from the Bible, some words written by Tozer, and short prayers. You will find wisdom, hope, and encouragement to love God and His Word. This book is made of several of his writings during his life and short prayers. I think is an enjoyable book where you can grow your love and knowledge about the Almighty God every day of the year. Look for the other devotionals of this series, they are also great.
Another note about the author: I shared before how much it was disappointing to me when I read in a bio about Tozer when they share how He neglected His family. I wanted to stop reading about Him and was very sad to find out this part of his sad story. Then, I changed my mind, I decided I was going to still read his material, toss the bad, embrace the good (that is a lot) but always keeping in mind He was just a person, like everyone immersed in his own fallacies, sin, and temptation. I´m sure all the authors have a lot of sad and ugly things, but not everyone has been exposed to a biography. Also, I can recall every time I remember Tozer, how much you can get into something that you may tend to forget or run away from the most important goals God trusted us in this life, you can have mistakes and still being a tool for others to know about God.
You can read this devotional alone or with your family, I think it is a good idea to involve young readers with this author.
