When her boyfriend, Tristan, died, Ivy thought she'd lost everything, even her faith in angels. But now she's discovered that he's her guardian angel -- his presence so strong that she can feel the touch of his hand, the beat of his heart. Ivy needs Tristan now more than ever because he knows she's in terrible danger. Only Ivy's guardian angel can save her now that his killer is after her.
But if Tristan rescues Ivy, his mission on earth will be finished, and he must leave her behind forever. Will saving Ivy mean losing her just when he's finally reached her again?
I was looking for a new book to read while I was in Target and the books I wanted weren't in, so I picked this book up because it looked interesting. It was the copy with all three of the books in the trilogy all bound into one book. I read the whole 230 pages in roughly one day. It's a very, VERY good book. In the beginning, you really want to know whats going to happen with Ivy moving into a new house, and getting a step-dad who is always buying expensive gifts, and a step brother who is really annoying. Then, you want to know what is going to happen between Ivy and Tristan. After that, you're in tears over Tristan's death, and feel sorry for Tristan and amazed that even after his death he's still completely in love with Ivy and that's what he lives for- or rather exists for. The best book I've read since the Twilight series :D
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is one of those books that's good to read when you just want something easy that you don't have to think about. It's super quick. I think it's supposed to be emotional, but the characters are very hard to get to know.
There was A TON of build up for Tristan and Ivy to get together, but once they did.... BAM! There fun was over before it really began.
Spoiler:
Tristan dies. He is an angel, still in love with Ivy. He has a mission, only he doesn't know what it is. Blah.
2.5 stars read this when you are bored out of your mind.
I also have to note how insanely short this one was. I would have been dissapointed if I had bought this!
When this book starts, we meet Ivy and Tristan as they begin their relationship. Beginning hesitantly but quickly falling in love and forming a solid bond, young loves young dream and all that. Ivy can't imagine what life would be like without him until she has to. Following a car accident, Ivy survives and Tristan doesn't, meaning she has to navigate life without the love of her life. But when Tristan wakes up on the other side of life, he realises he has a job to do, a mission to fulfil. This book mainly follows Tristan attempting to reach Ivy to let her know he's there, but Ivy getting upset at every try.
I found this to be an incredibly slow burn of a book. It didn't have a lot of action and the explanation of how Tristan and Ivy got together was incredibly long, practically making up the majority of the book. Overall, this was a good read but it definitely was a typical YA book published in the 90s.
Reading Challenge #20: A book at the bottom of your to-read list
Even though I absolutely love angel books, I didn't go into reading this with much thought. It's an older book so I wasn't really expecting to be blown away. (Not saying that older books aren't well written, it's just that times are different and writing styles and techniques have improved since then) In short, I enjoyed this book for what it's worth. This book didn't have complex characters and the plot was pretty average (but more on that later). This is a six book series so I'm pretty sure things will eventually pick up, but don't mistake this as a negative review.
My Rating: 3.95 stars
Kissed by an Angel starts off with the climax of the story; Tristan and Ivy are in a car accident. The story goes back in time so you're able to witness how they fell in love in the first place, up to present day, Tristan dying and finding out how to cope with life as an angel.
As for the characters, I don't have too much of an opinion on them. I liked Ivy (even though she's a little obsessive when it comes to angels. And I thought I was bad. But I can't complain, something really horrific happened to her when she was a child and ever since then she's believed in them. She keeps these angel figurines that she prays to on her dresser. She's already obsessed with angels, so I can imagine how she's going to feel when she finds out Tristan is one.
And next we have Tristan, the boy she loves who doesn't believe in angels, and yet he winds up becoming one. Oh the irony :) I really like Tristan. I loved his little quirks and his awkwardness in the beginning. Every time he would try to catch Ivy's attention, something embarrassing would happen. He was such an endearing character, plus I also loved the bond between Ivy's little brother, Philip, and him. I can't wait for Tristan to find out what his mission is as an angel and for him to learn all of his abilities.
And last but not least, we have the annoying secondary characters (Beth, Suzanne, and Gregory). The only person who was tolerable was Beth. Suzanne and her thirst for Gregory annoyed me. 95% of this book is Suzanne talking about Gregory and her wondering about who he's dating or whatever. I may have forgot to mention that Gregory is Ivy's stepbrother who's super shady. I can't stress how much I hate when you have an amazing book, but the secondary characters (usually best friends or siblings) ruin everything. Also, I really liked Gary, Tristan's best friend, at first but he turned out to be a douche as well. I hate when people guilt trip others. It's not cool, at all!
As I mentioned before I thought the plot for this book was pretty decent. I think the series will definitely pick up in the next couple of books, so this was a great setup.
The Ending:
Overall: I thought this was a pretty good read, and I can't wait to read the other five books!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I almost liked this book until the eleventh chapter, but after that... I cried like a baby. I felt so bad for Tristan, that cute, charming boy didn't deserve die so fast. Besides that I didn't liked this story much. It was quite boring and nothing special actually happened. As always, I'm not saying that this books is bad or not worth of time. I would never say that about any book. I just didn't liked it and that is only my opinion ;)
¿Porque me meto a leer estos libros? ¿porqueeeee? Solo espero no llorar... no sufrir....
—Oh, Ella. No sé cómo olvidarme de él. —No me olvides,…—rogó Tristan. —Al final, ella debe hacerlo —advirtió Lacey. —Lo he perdido, Ella, lo sé. Tristan está muerto. Él no puede abrazarme de nuevo. No puede pensar en mí. No puede quererme ahora. El amor termina con la muerte. —¡No termina! —dijo Tristan—.
I've passed this book multiple times at my local book store and now I've finally gotten around to reading it because of one of the challenges. This book is about Ivy and Tristan and how they are meant to be together. So then Tristin dies in a car accident, Ivy's world gets turned upside down. She used to believe in guardian angels, but not anymore. Only now Tristin is her guardian angel. Tristin is there to find his quest and figure out how to save Ivy even if she doesn't know he's there. The overall concept of this book was strange, but the cover was interesting so why not. I wasn't sure what the think about this book when heading in. The Bad I found this book very slow paced and it seemed to be like nothing was happening. It was a book almost about nothing until the last few chapters when things started to get interesting. The audiobook was kind of bland which didn't make it any fun really to listen to, but I would have rather been listening than reading with the slow pace it was going at. The Good It was a good thing this was a small book because if it wouldn't have been then I would not have been able to have finished in one day. Overall It was a good book, but just wasn't the book for me. I will be continuing the series because maybe it'll get better. Ivy's character was sweet and understanding, but she allowed herself to be more pushed around. Tristin was an extremely sweet boy trying to get Ivy's attention and he even adopted her cat just to make sure that Ivy can always see Bella. I loved how compassionate he was and how willing he was to try to be with Ivy. They were together for a short while when they crashed, but it was that short time they had together that mattered. The ending did make me give it 3 stars because I would like to know who which is the main reason in why I'm continuing the series.
i'm currently rereading books i read as a teen and i remember this one being a favorite but i don't remember the plot at all. was teenage me on glue? what is this?
I remember being obsessed with this series in high school with my sisters. One road trip we devoured these books by taking turns each reading a chapter then handing it over and waiting until it was our turn again to read the next chapter. "Kissed by an Angel" brings back so much nostalgia and the writing style reminds me of LJ Smith. Almost went into a reading slump, but this book helped pull me back into reading. Very cute, short, sweet, and light. Just the kind of book I needed to read.
Me hizo llorar, reír, enojarme…
This is book is one of the best books I have read all year. Right now i am where Tristion is trying to find out what his mission is ... right now he thinks it is to convince Ivy that he loves her ... but by my opinion she already knows. I find it very sad how he died in the begging. I wanted to cry ... at some times you might get a little confused but you will figure it out later ... in my minded I see Tristion as the hunky (or chunky as Ivy’s boss would say messing up but all ways fixing her self)high school jock. The way the author describes him in the water ... it makes you feel like you are acutely there. The water blowing past his muscles ... while also running through his hair. The way I see Ivy is a normal nothing special high school girl with blond birds nest hair (meaning a mess ... all curly and unmanageable) with pail skin.
I... don't get it? So this book starts off with... a car crash, after a dance or prom followed by an uncomfortable make-out session and one-sided "I love you" confession. Which, then ends up being... THE car crash which I guess was meant as the climax of the book...?
After this prologue-y thing of the car crash, the story then is a convoluted conglomerate of Ivy and Tristan's weird, strange, forced non-existent relationship. It felt like creepy-stalker Tristan trying to get Ivy and Ivy being harassed and borderline sexually assaulted by her step-brother Gregory... all while Ivy's best friend Suzanne has this massive obsessive crush on Gregory. This isn't a love triangle/quadrilateral thing going on, it's just plain awkward. I spent most of the story asking myself a couple of things:
1. what the heck is going on? 2. has this author heard of organization? 3. is this all supposed to be the same story or snippets of different ones? 4. was "Twilight" a major influence for this story? 5. will anything remotely interesting ACTUALLY happen?
10/10 felt like there was no rhyme or reason for this organizational pattern of the story. It skipped around entirely too much, was not engaging and the characters fell completely flat. I couldn't relate to ANY of the characters... except maybe Ella the cat that laid in bed all day and scratched anyone that tried to bother her.
I read the first three books in this series about 10 years ago (they had different, less cheesy covers) and I loved them. Decided to give it a reread since most of my other books are boxed up right now, and this lead me to discover the author has written 3 more books since then! Exciting stuff.
Book one still holds up for me! I think it’s a very sweet YA romance story that takes on a mysterious twist towards the end. A short and easy read. At times I questioned if the author had some kind of religious agenda, you know, with all the angels and stuff. I’m still undecided but leaning towards no. I think she just likes incorporating otherworldly things.
I really enjoyed this!! It was such a quick read, so it kind of felt like a novella, but so much happened at the same time. It was giving me some “If I Stay” vibes. I can’t wait to finish this trilogy!
This book gripped me like none other. I'm head over heels for it, so much that I read the first three books in two days. Yeah, it's that good. I won't say much, but the ending had me sobbing.
I am leaning away from YA horror for a bit since it is February with Valentine's Day on the horizon and I just got this trilogy of books.
I saw advertisements for the Kissed By An Angel trilogy in the back of some of my Fear Street books and since I didn't get to it back in the late 1990s, there is no time like the present.
I like romance and I like horror and this is clearly on the other end of the spectrum from Fear Street yet there are elements to it that I feel are more supernatural in nature even if it seems to border on faith and religion. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and despite schmaltzy romance, it is worth reading.
We start the book as events are recounted leading up to what I will dub "the accident" and it isn't a spoiler because well...the book blurb is 100% informing us that Tristan dies.
Ivy Lyons started going to Stonehill High School in January and made friends with two girls named Beth Van Dyke and Suzanne Goldstein. Beth, a romantic, thinks Tristan Carruthers is interested in Ivy after bumping into her at least twice.
Ivy is sure that Tristan, despite being handsome and having the perfect swimmer body is a jerky, brain-dead jock. All girls want to date him and at the first swim meet in March, Suzanne and Beth bring Ivy to check out Tristan.
Suzanne is more interested in a boy named Gregory Baines, the handsome rich kid in the school who acts like he is better than everybody else. Ivy has kept it a secret but soon Gregory is going to be her step-brother because his father and her mother are getting married.
Gregory hasn't treated Ivy or her own little brother, eight almost nine year old Philip, very friendly since they come from the more working class, blue collar types from Norwalk. Ivy's mother use to be the hairdresser to Gregory's mother, Caroline, but is now dating successful Alfred Baines, the family going back years from money.
On an April evening, after the wedding, at the reception we get to see the story flip to Tristan's P.O.V. in this flashback. He and his buddy, fellow swimmer Gary, are waiters at the reception to earn money for an upcoming swim meet. Gary thinks Tristan only agreed to do this because it will impress Ivy and he is sort of right but Tristan has been interested in Ivy since he saw her.
She seems to be avoiding him and Tristan just wants to be able to get a chance to talk to Ivy. He saw her that first day she came to school and was completely gone after hearing her play the piano in the music room without her noticing him. Being a waiter is not one of Tristan's skills as he keeps fumbling things but it is probably because Ivy is about and the rich friends of Gregory Baines invited to the reception are complete jerks.
We go back to Ivy and find that she has been dressed in a big pink nightmare of a gown by her mother as if this were Gone With The Wind but with glitter too. She has no idea why Tristan is there and it seems that Gregory all of a sudden has decided to be nice to Ivy...in a creepy way.
Not at all Greg and Marcia Brady since they are now step-siblings...
Ivy notices that her little brother is not around and she goes looking for Philip because he has not been too happy about having to move and leave his friends or having his mother remarry. Ivy is afraid he might have ran away but she soon finds her brother hidden in a storeroom with Tristan.
Tristan's clumsiness had him fired but he had to wait around for Gary so he hid in a storeroom to mope about making a spectacle in front of Ivy. Philip was there hiding and asked Tristan to get him some food noticing he had on a waiter's uniform so nice guy Tristan did so and found a way to make the kid finally smile.
Ivy finds Philip and Tristan has put celery stalks in his ears, salad on his head, black olives on his teeth and shrimp tails up his nose to entertain him. Ivy can't help but smile and doesn't say a word when her little brother calls Tristan the first friend he has made here in Stonehill.
While the newlyweds are on their week long honeymoon, Ivy and her little brother spend their last few days at the apartment before having to move into their new big house. Philip is not taking it well and it mostly seems to be because Gregory has been acting like a jerk because his father has treated Philip kindly. Ivy didn't want to be in the big house with Gregory because one she already sees him enough at school and at the wedding reception, he kissed her.
We do learn early on that Ivy believes in angels and when she moves into her new room, she unpacks fifteen angel statues made out wood and stone and porcelain, glass and so on. Ivy also has a cat named Ella that she found on the street when she was a kitten and since animals are good judges of character, it isn't a surprise that she doesn't want Gregory to pet her.
Ella bites him and he throws her across the room after he picked her up by the scruff of the neck and it is a good thing the cat wasn't hurt. What a prick.
Ivy works at a holiday store in the mall that is for every holiday all year round for parties and things like that. Ivy finds an order for a swim team party has been ordered by Tristan and he will be there later to pick it up so Ivy is glad to be at lunch with Suzanne and Beth around that time.
Suzanne is interested in learning all she can about Gregory and Beth is ready to share a new story she has been writing but it is interrupted when Beth sees behind Ivy a...blue whale balloon?
All three girls turn to see Tristan picking up the party order at the store and the two older owners, a pair of sisters named Betty and Lillian, talking to him and trying to play matchmakers as if Ivy didn't have her two besties trying todo the same thing. Suzanne calls Tristan over and he does so out of good manners but he and Ivy barely speak before he leaves. Very awkward...
The next time we are back at school in these last two months before junior year is over, Ivy's drama teacher has decided that an exercise on enunciation and concentration should be done bouncing up and down on the diving board of the swimming pool where the swim team practices. The trouble with this is that Ivy is afraid of the water and doesn't know how to swim due to a traumatic incident that will be revealed later...
Tristan comes to Ivy's rescue when she tries to come back from the end of the diving board and experiences vertigo in front of a huge crowd. The day doesn't get any better when Ivy returns home with Suzanne and finds that Ella has scratched up one of Andrew's favorite expensive chairs to her mother's horror. The decision is to be either have the cat declawed or give Ella away and Ivy, heartbroken, goes for giving her up then taking away her defense.
She places an ad on the school bulletin board and that night, Ivy gets a call from a young man asking about taking in the cat and it is Tristan. Suzanne told him how much the cat means to Ivy so Tristan wants Ivy to be able to know Ella is in a good home and still be able to see the cat.
Ivy wants a clean break but Tristan is now curious as to why Ivy seems to be nervous around him and if it has anything to do with why she is afraid of water and prays to angels. He tells her he can teach her how to swim and Ivy gives it some thought and then decides to give Tristan a chance when she sees how well Ella takes to him.
When two weeks of lessons don't seem to open Ivy up to him, Tristan is beginning to lose hope and wanting to give up. When he thinks Ivy is drowning, Tristan jumps into the pool with all of his clothes on and is angered to find she was swimming by herself...missing the fact that Ivy swam down on her own to dive after a penny.
It is the moment however that proves to Ivy how much Tristan is in love with her and they share their first kiss and begin dating. They seem to be a perfect couple who hardly fight and when they do, it isn't for very long. The one thing they have differences about come with the terrible news on Philip's ninth birthday...when Gregory and his father are informed that his mother is dead.
Tristan stays with Philip but Ivy and her mother hear the news from the police along with Gregory and his dad that Andrew's ex-wife committed suicide by a gun to her head. Gregory had visited his mother awhile back and had been troubled ever since so Ivy, being the kind person she is, wants to be there for her stepbrother if he wants to talk.
Tristan has known Gregory since they were little kids and knows that he has always been cool and aloof especially since his parents divorced. He has a feeling that this news might mess with his head and Tristan doesn't want Ivy around him when Gregory decides to do something stupid with his friends around...
Then the accident happens and it leaves Ivy losing all her faith in angels to have Tristan taken away from her not knowing that the boy she loved is now her own guardian angel. Tristan learns that he has a mission on Earth to protect the girl he still loves but from a force neither one could have planned...
Already a sucker for this series and waiting with anticipation and dread for what happens next book and for anyone else who has not read these books...sorry if I spilled so much tea but wow, how could I not?
This was an interesting read. I enjoyed this book. I thought the story was great. Tristan was adorable. I loved how he wanted to get Ivy's attention as a human and as an angel. I thought this was a sweet, paranormal story. However, it did not feel as much as a novel. It felt more like a prequel that is introducing you to the story. I thought there could have been more characterization on Ivy's character. She was a bit of a mystery to me. I did not know if she truly liked Tristan back. I wish there was more on their relationship as well. Hopefully, the rest of the series gets better. Overall, a great read.
