She debuted in 1987 with Natsufuku no Erii (Jap: 夏服のエリー) on the manga anthology Bessatsu Hana to Yume published by Hakusensha. She is best known for her gothic manga works, such as the Earl Cain series (Jap: 伯爵カイン, Hakushaku Cain) and Angel Sanctuary (Jap: 天使禁猟区, Tenshi Kinryōku)
Her work is typically serialized in one of Hakusensha's two shōjo manga anthologies, Bessatsu Hana to Yume and Hana to Yume. In 2010, Kaori Yuki was one of many manga artists whose work would appear in the new shōjo manga anthology Aria by the publisher Kodansha on July 28, 2010. Her doujinshi-ka name is MoonClock.
Heavens, I'd like to say that it's because this one is terrible because it's one of Kaori Yuki's older works, but that can't be it since Screw and the Count Cain series (both which are older) are much better than Kaine. Also, considering that Boy's Next Door was published the year after Kaine and that it's certainly better in various aspects, I think that Kaine's an odd dip in quality. The art is superb as always but the characters are flat and the flow of the story isn't smooth. It would've been better if the pacing's slower since there's just too much packed into this manga.
I was head over heels in love with Kaine--a short manga drama of suspense, with a hint of yaoi thrown in. So many years afterward, I'm still in love with it!^_^
So I picked this up because I love the way Kaori Yuki draws and the premise for the first story - the eponymous Kaine - sounded pretty interesting. All and all this is a mixed bag of decent to bad stories, with similar settings but very different tones. Perhaps a case of style over substance.
Kaine is the best one by far, and also the longest one. The twist end is a little too much and too over the top but overall I enjoyed the mystery (though it ultimately fell a little flat). It was dark and messed up but had some of that gothic allure I expected when I decided to read. 3/5
The second story, Magical Mystery Tour was outright /very/ bad, though I did like seeing the different artstyle. It's inconsistent, nonsensical, the mystery doesn't succeed but neither does the comedy. 1/5
By the time I reached the first few pages of the third story I just knew this wasn't it and the whole volume was not going to keep me interested. Again, the art was very nice in both the third and fourth stories. They are basically comedy. The first one was ok but I didn't find it engaging. 2/5. The fourth one is kind of a continuation, featuring some of the same characters. It could be fun but by this time I was really not into it and just wanted to get done and finish this. Maybe a case of too many words for too little payoff. 2/5.
Sooo much packed into such a little story. The unrequited rockstar love! The corporate scheming! The familial jealousy! It's like every great story ever, all at once.
Full review coming soon! Just know it worth the read! Go read it! It isn't a BL but a really interesting sepense and mystery. Kaori Yuki's manga are top-notch even her short stories. This series would have been better longer than one volume but hey, I'm not going to complain.
Kaori Yuki's Kaine is extremely underated and hated online just like most of not if not all of her works, but I think it's a really interesting manga and if it wasn't just a single volume manga, I think the story wouldn't be as fast paced and the band members and plot would have a LOT more development and screentime. Now here's my opinion as someone who doesn't hate Yuki or is a "stan" of her,but just simply a reader of her works:
I think that Kaori Yuki relied too much on references, visual kei inspirations and bishounen which is generally why her stories are so hated online or attract weirdest people online. Yuki works often relies on aesthetics of the 90s visual kei movement in Japan, European literature, dark movies and controversial topics like incest, weird psychological and horror themes something that turns off many people from her works and make her have HUGE amounts of criticizers who spend a lot of time going and down 👎 voting all her works, giving extremely rude reviews and sometimes hateful ones. All this could be avoided if she just improved her writing, art and stop relaying on shock value/controversy and her obsession with sadistic characters and visual kei themes or at least make the stories more clear and understandable to people who aren't familiar with what she's writing or drawing. On Goodreads it popular to hate her and only negative reviews get's likes or respectful replies,on YouTube (she hardly has anyone who reviews about her works there) she only get's negative reviews on there especially for Angel Sanctuary, on Amazon it's mostly negative reviews or creeps, Facebook mostly creeps and all the bloggers who knows who she is who isn't Japanese and speak English or Spanish are all creeps who talk about her works especially Angel Sanctuary and The Earl Cain Saga it it's not a good look for her works. I want to also add that she refused for Angel Sanctuary to get a full anime which hinder the popularity and her works are hard to find for non Japanese speakers or people who don't live in Japan. She even makes her merchandise difficult to buy and she's difficult to follow since she makes a point of being mysterious making it easy for impersonation online and fake information to go around. Well at least Matsuri Hino wasn't like this and was more humble with Vampire Knight through most of her works I've read so far aren't as good as Yuki's works and she has a LOT less series than Yuki. All and all I don't think it's just her readers and criticizers who are the problem but Kaori Yuki, herself.
