I first saw this book on a shelf in the Theology section of the University of Glasgow's library in 2016. The bright red spine with the single word, "Satan," caught my eye and made me stop in my tracks. I picked up the book, flipped through it, and knew immediately that this was something I needed to read and study carefully. Eventually I bought a used copy for around $50, and now I see that not many copies are for sale anywhere. This is one that a publisher needs to pick up and re-print.

A wide-ranging, balanced, and learned collection of articles on the devil and humanity's dealings with him, "Satan" (Sheed & Ward, 1951 - originally published in French in the series Collection de Pscyhologie Religieuse ETUDES CARMELITAINES) is stunning in its overall effect. From careful exegesis of New Testament texts on demon possession to a historical study witchcraft in the 16th century, and from an essay on Dante's conception of Satan to reflections on the presence of Satan in Nazism - this collection is totally unique and unparalleled. Written by a group of French monks and academics in the late 1940s, all of whom lived through the horrors of World War II, "Satan" gives astonishing insight into every aspect of Satan's activity, from the Fall to the modern age, and provides a wealth of detail on a variety of topics related to Satan, demonology, sorcery, witchcraft, and nihilism (which, in the modern world, comes after deicide). At a little over 500 pages, it constitutes a portable library on the fallen angel.

Since there are not many reviews or outlines of the book available, I want to offer my annotated list of its contents below. I'll also include quotes or ideas that stood out to me.
