Mankind was wiped out in the blink of an eye. Hordes of mindless, flesh-hungry zombies ravaged the world and left a bloody trail of death and ashes in their wake.
Sarah survived that nightmare eight years ago with her son who was born on that fateful day. Now as they struggle to eke out a living in the apocalyptic ruins of Virginia, they hear word of a safe haven in the next state over. A place where she'll no longer have to wonder if her son will live to see tomorrow.
There's just one problem. Standing between them and paradise is over a hundred miles of more than just the undead. Cannibals, lunatics, and murderous bandits prowl the landscape, searching for their next victims.
But facing an impossible journey, Sarah may just have the ace that they need to make it: an unexplainable and frightening power her son possesses that will either turn the tide and deliver them to salvation or bring about their destruction and leave them to join the ranks of the dead...
Sarah and her son, David are wanting to leave behind the townhome they have been living in since the world fell apart as they had heard from some people traveling through that there is a safe haven called Noah's Ark located in Durham, North Carolina.
Sarah doesn't really want to leave the townhome but when David keeps begging to go she finally gives in. Sarah starts to thinking that maybe they will be able to make it after all as North Carolina is only about 100 miles from their home in Virginia, so they set out to locate this place called Noah's Ark.
Once they are road bound though they end up realizing that things are a lot rougher out in the world than they thought but it seems David has some kind of special telepathy gift to keep the zombies away and Sarah is kind of amazed as she doesn't understand how David has that power.
Sarah and David will have to overcome all obstacles to reach the Ark including not only zombies, but bandits that control the border and some of the main roads.
Does Sarah and David make it to Durham? What awaits them at Noah's Ark? No spoilers here as you will need to read the book!
Thoughts:
I have read this author before as he normally writes horror stories, but this time he stepped over into the apocalyptical world and just as in his horror stories the pace was fast and the writing style flows along.
I really became attached to the characters Sarah and David as they made their way through the story. Sarah is stubborn and has a fierce streak to her to the point where she wants to get things done her way. David is a young teenager but he does everything his mom tells him to do though he has that stubborn streak running through him too as he sometimes does stuff on his own and then she gets upset with him, but he is usually always trying to do things for the good of his mom.
There were lots of crazy things that happened to them on their travels and there was even one section of the book that I really didn't want to read because I knew something bad was going to happen - like I had a dread feeling that something was about to hit the fan and there was nothing I could do to stop that feeling! Yes - the author can give you those feelings of tension and dread with the nail biting suspense as I have read his other stories that throw out that same trepidation! If someone is chasing the characters you are going to hear the running footsteps and if zombies are moaning and groaning you are going to hear those sounds.
This book had an action right in the beginning of the book and it basically did not let up all the way through the story. I read the last 60% within 24 hours as the action just kicked up and there was so much happening with the characters that I couldn't put the book down! I own the rest of the books in this series and plan on stepping into book two soon! Giving this book five "Dreaded Zombie" stars!
I gave this book a chance because I got it for free for my Kindle.
***Spoilers***
At first it was good and we had some survival aspects to the story and some zombies in it, but once the characters leave their home, it’s all down hill.
There is non-stop pain, misery and suffering and frankly toward the end I began skimming through the part with the bandit camp and the final battle at the end.
I was able to tell that once the mom’s gun only had one bullet left in it that it would be used to shoot the bandit leader, Jericho.
And once they got to this Noah’s Ark thing and the mom met Noah that she was probably going to get romantically involved with him in later volumes.
***End Spoilers***
So to sum up. It’s boring, it’s predictable, it’s kinda sadistic, and the characters aren’t interesting. There are barely any zombies in it. The kid’s “power” is so vague and unexplained that it’s annoying. And frankly I have zero reason to want to read any future volumes.
The only part about the book I did like was the few pages that had the insane rantings of the scavenger that the mom was trying to interrogate. Now THAT was well written and made me laugh.
I love post apocalyptic zombie books. Some are good some are so-so. This is a good one. Our heroine is mother to David, a very special boy. She has raised him alone in Roanoke ever since the apocalypse right years ago. Thru travelers they hear of this safe haven, Noah's Ark in Durham. Though reluctant at first, for her welfare and that of her son, she decides they must leave. Sarah is really a tough lady. She overcomes and controls horrible situations which are out of her control. She perseveres, even if the outcome is not what she had hoped for. Lots of action and of course, the dregs of mankind are the ones to survive. The character, Sarah, that the author created is strong and courageous. I was impressed. Really a good read.
Sarah's son David was born the night the zombie apocalypse came and for 8 years she has struggled to raise him alone in a deadly new world. Living in a group of townhouses, growing vegetables and scrounging supplies is the best she can do for him until a chance encounter with two strangers. They tell her about Noah's Ark in North Carolina, a safe haven from the zombies that could give her son a chance at a better life...but it will be 2 weeks on foot across dangerous country hiding from zombies and the worst examples of mankind...
Sarah is not the greatest at decision making to be honest. Her determination to protect her son is admirable but to the point where she has him so coddled that he starts disobeying her, putting both at risk. She dismisses the idea of joining Herb and Molly for the safety in numbers bid for safe haven, only to set out on her own a couple of days later with David. David is pretty annoying in that he won't do as he is told but Sarah is also at fault for hiding him from the dangers of the world and not preparing him for what they will face.
I liked the way the author put the story together and the writing style was uncomplicated. He didn't get over descriptive, just enough to keep the reader informed, but not enough to be boring. I liked a lot of the characters that he introduced on the journey, who either helped or hindered Sarah. The bad guys were all interesting and certainly added to the exciting nature of the story as the plot progressed.
Sarah is constantly doing silly things like walking down streets in broad daylight chattering to David and not checking her surroundings for danger, leading her into dangerous situations. Instead she should be using a stealthy building to building approach, looking around corners for danger instead of blundering on. She has 'bad feelings' about a rescuer but does nothing to act on it, blindly trusting that he is fine, until she has been proven right and he has almost killed them both. Her stupidity in the school and the hotel had me shaking my head at times. I did however like that she wasn't running in to help others at the expense of her son, which is a more realistic reaction in an apocalypse for a woman. I can accept characters making mistakes in an apocalypse too.
The bad guys in these books like to kill, torture and rape and this book is no exception so those of a nervous disposition may not like certain parts of the book. The author introduces a new element with David's very useful gift, which I found interesting. Zombie purists might not like his ability but I thought it was interesting but he couldn't always make it work when he was scared. I will also congratulate the author on what happens at the end of the book, a few surprises that I wasn't expecting, and that continues in book two.
This was a decent read and I've already read book two.
I enjoyed the story from the beginning. Sarah and David were great characters along with the others as they came along. The only issue was David's power.
This was the first book of this genre that I had read and found it to be an interesting concept. I usually read mysteries and this was a mystery in a very unusual way. I think this would be a good book to start with to delve into this type of subject as the author keeps the book moving along quickly and it will keep you interested. This book was provided to me at no charge in exchange for my honest opinion of it.
