Momoko's adored Yosuke has revealed himself to be the demon Viento, sworn to kill Wedding Peach and her Angels of Love. Despite her love for Yosuke, Momoko gathers her troupes and boldly ventures into the demon world. With the other angels at her side, Wedding Peach must prepare for a fight to decide the fate of the world.
I really have been on a "magical girls" kick these past couple years... Everyone compares the genre back to the iconic Sailor Moon franchise, but that's unfair because the genre as we know it existed long before the 90's. I have yet to experience "old school" magical girl titles from the 70's and 80's, but I have consumed quite a new of relatively known titles from the 90's and early 2000's. And now there's this forgotten bit of silly fluff, Wedding Peach.
People say it's too much like Sailor Moon, I say it's closer to Tokyo Mew Mew, especially with the villains roles (won't spoil it here). Wedding Peach is definitely ridiculous, taking the whole "power of love" to a whole other meaning, where the girls kick ass.... dressed as bridesmaids.... and using literal wedding themed aesthetics to beat the bad guys..... yeaaaaahh, don't take this series seriously, folks. Even Usagi (aka, Sailor Moon) is looking at these guys with a perplexed look on her face lol.
That said, it's still a perfectly enjoyable little slice of fluffy 90's magical girl shoujo manga. I'm surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did, considering a few years back I couldn't stand reading the first volume... but hey, times change and now I am shameless lover of all things fluffy, ridiculous, and romantic, so shoujo manga is almost always bound to draw me in and make me fall in love, if only temporarily.
There is just so much love in this volume, and hatred, and near-death-experiences. It gets pretty intense and most of the volume IS the climax of the story, I believe. In this volume, Potamos was the first seemingly unshakeable character who was changed and influenced by the waves of love given off by Momoko/Peach and Yosuke/Viento. She witnesses Yosuke using himself as a shield for Momoko against his father's attacks, putting his own life in grave danger. Potamos doesn't know why he'd do this, other than for something called 'love'. Then, Uragano unleashes a killing blow, and Potamos jumps in front of Yosuke, shielding him with her own body. As she lay dying, Yosuke holds her and asks her why she did it, she responds by telling him she doesn't know why she did it (as she caresses his cheek) and she says that even though he loves Peach, she just wanted him to live. She kisses his cheek and repeated herself once more before dying and disappearing. Potamos truly did feel love for Yosuke, not just a general attraction to his strength and hatred. She died being just as confusing as she always was, but much kinder than we've ever seen her. I believe that she died happy, knowing that she spared Yosuke's life. Anyway, Momoko's and Yosuke's love for each other was strong through it all, and Yosuke's true intentions of turning to the dark side were revealed. He never really turned, he only meant to protect Momoko in whatever way made most sense. He thought he could keep her from getting involved, and that he'd kill Queen Rain Devilla himself. It was actually the love Momoko had inside of her, along with the love of the other Love Angels, and the Sacred Four Somethings that allowed to envelop everyone everywhere with love, she even enveloped Queen Rain Devilla with love, putting her in a peaceful slumber to awaken again someday and become a lot like Goddess Aphrodite. Momoko put an end to the war between the demons and angels, and everyone could go home. Nobody had to die anymore either. Uragano returned home with Yosuke and came back to Yosuke's mother who lovingly welcomed him, and Celestia returned with Momoko to her husband. There were tears for everyone, and there was so much forgiveness and love. As a matter of fact, nobody had any need to forgive, ever, in this volume, now that I think of it. Instead of forgiving, they skipped the entire step of really holding any grudge and needing to forgive, they just..loved. It didn't matter, because they were already sorry and it was already okay. They just loved. This is what unconditional love is, and all of these characters have so much of it. Even Hinagiku gave up her hatred for Jama-P (it was slipped in there, she was seen holding him. I'm not sure if anyone even realized she didn't resent him anymore). And very importantly, Salvia gave up her hatred for demons and replaced it with love and understanding. Love, love, love. This manga teaches people so many things about love. I'll likely re-read it many times in my life when I need the help. I highly recommend it to EVERYONE of any age, gender, ethnicity, religion, everything, just read it for the love on each page and the comedy. And now that everyone is with their lover for eternity, it's time for Salvia/Scarlett to at long last find someone for her... Like Dean Butler from the U.S., maybe?! I am not sure how long they've been friends, but they have been friends for AT LEAST four years, which is a long enough time to fall deeply and truly in love with someone, even if you only saw them here or there or got to know them a few times. You can soak everything in that's possible to, and analyze it, I'm sure that Dean did that every time he spoke with her. He knew her so well, and she rejected him all of the time. She rejected him every time she felt his love for her, perhaps, because it was causing her to feel love for him in return, maybe. Regardless, Scarlett wishing-ly wonders if someday she might find a love as strong and wonderful as Momoko's and Yosuke's, and look, we find that her love has been there for years, and her and his love for each other are the second strongest out of the main four, Momoko and Yosuke being first. Their love story is cute too. I'm glad that she was able to tell him that she loves him too, and show how much he means to her. He knew it then, that she loved him a lot, perhaps not as much as he loves her, but still a lot to come chasing after her. Poor boy thought she probably didn't love him until then though, but he always knew that she had a good heart, she was just rough around the edges and never really showed what she was feeling in a properly interpretable way. On another note, it's really so sweet to see now how closely knit the trio of love angels became from start to finish of the series. They started out as wonderful friends but rivals, but slowly, the rivalry became just a game as their friendship and love for each other grew. They would all throw away their lives for each other in a heart beat if it came down to it. They're so wonderful, all of them, every character, and it's so sweet to see all four couples married at the end. It's beautiful to see that they all got their happy ending/beginnings. P.S. I know now why Wedding Peach is so similar to Sailor Moon... Sukehiro Tomita, the man who proposed the idea of Wedding Peach, was a script writer for Sailor Moon! Or something like that
Now i‘m done with the series, even watched the anime. I have to say first i didn‘t like the artstyle but after the first manga it was ok. The manga was kinda adorable. I loved the pair yosuke and momoko at the end and was nice to read.
This is the last volume in this series and it does a good job closing the story. However I felt like it was rushed and had potential for a more complex plot and character growth.
With secrets revealed, the story focuses on its conclusion. It’s interesting that although Yousuke was a demon he still maintained his rationality and feelings toward Momoko. I also liked how Momoko’s friends still considered her feelings towards Yousuke before completely writing him off as a demon. That said, the sudden realization Scarlett had, felt rushed and underdeveloped. I think her years-long hatred that dates back to a young age, should have been eased after multiple attempts overtime that showed not all demons are bad.
The concept with the Saint Something Fours seemed forgotten. I felt like it had a great start but somewhere along the way it lost its essence and the items were no longer critical to the story. Also I’m not sure if I missed it in earlier chapters, but I didn’t know that the Saint Something Fours could be used by one person.
This series has a lot of potential for action scenes. I think they had an interesting concept with regards to the Love Angel’s powers and it was disheartening to see them not being explored more. In this volume I was also hoping we could see more of Salvia using the sword because it’s the first weapon not directly related to weddings. However, Salvia didn’t get to use it and even the fight between Uragano and Yousuke was depicted in a few consolatory panels.
This volume focuses more on the emotion of love. Finding the kindness within oneself because no one is inherently bad, seemed to be its primary message. I enjoyed its depiction of trust and the cliche love wins against everything theme. That said, everyone in this volume has a happy ending and are paired. Yes, even Scarlet gets a relationship in the extra story.
The artwork ranges greatly in this volume as there are multiple scenery changes. The demon world is depicted quite dark, cluttered with tree roots and circular inlets, contrary to the lighter tones found in the other scenes. The school is depicted with a generous amount of details whereas, when the Love Angels use their powers the background is primarily blank and filled with stars giving it a more uplifting feel. Definitely a good range of backgrounds and iconography used throughout.
Overall, this was a fun series. This will always be one of my guilty pleasures because it was one of the first manga I read as a kid.
It ended kind of abruptly, but was still a pretty solid ending. Overall this series was a cute, entertaining story. I might have to watch the anime to see if the story gets more flushed out.
