London
1907, twenty years into the zombie Plague

Reuben is a baker living in the slums of London, sharing a room with his father and an extended family of cockroaches. Poor, uneducated, and repressing all his sexual desires, he leads a life of misery, only sometimes sprinkled with gin and a rough tumble in a filthy back alley.

But when he is abducted into Bylondon to be the slave of a wealthy crime family member named Erik Dal, his values are put to the test. His new master is obsessed with all things equestrian, and Reuben soon learns that if he obeys and performs well as Erik’s horse, he might just get everything he yearns for: pampering, foods he never even dreamed of, and shameless sex with a demonically handsome young man in leather riding boots.

As Copper, Erik’s treasured dun stallion, Reuben must submit to his new master’s obscene fancy of possessing another man completely. That is, if he yearns for treats and not the lick of a riding crop. Fake tails, harnesses, and a new haircut to his ginger mane help Reuben transform into Copper, but the fear of losing his dignity in the eyes of society might just prove to be a bigger restraint than any bit, bridle, or handcuffs.

All that for the small price of his freedom. Though at times, Reuben feels it’s his soul that Erik is after instead.

K. A. Merikan is a duo of queer writers who don’t believe in following the well-trodden path. In their books you can dip your toe into dangerous romance with mafiosi, outlaw bikers and bad boys, all from the safety of your sofa. They love the weird and wonderful, stepping out of the box, and bending stereotypes both in life and in fiction. Their stories don’t shy away from exploring the darker side of M/M romance, and feature a variety of anti-heroes, rebels, misfits, and underdogs who go against the grain.
Be prepared for shocking twists, dark humor, raw emotions, and sizzling hot scenes.

K.A. Merikan also writes steamy M/M romcoms as Devon Doe.

I absolutely LOVE this. Read it in 2 days flat. (I was home sick with nothing better to do, but still). One of my primary conclusions from this series is that Plot + Zombies is the absolute best trope ever. I will never forget the way Copper takes out the zombies single-handedly in book 3. Also, this confirms that Merikan can take the most ridiculous plots and I will enjoy the hell out of them.

So this might be a hot take but you either write a book about dubcon ponyplay, the zombie apocalypse, or the socioeconomic and political situation of Victorian England - you don’t write all three together. Respectfully no one is reading the ponyplay book for deep political scheming and it really cluttered up the reading experience by trying to pull me in too many different directions like please I don’t care about the revolution let’s go back to braiding Copper’s hair please. Also by the third book Erik had not done enough groveling for me personally for Reuben to consensually choose to be his sexy horse considering all the punishing first ask for explanations and feel sorry later Erik did and the miscommunications were things that could have been cleared up so easily but no I had to cringe through way too many punishment scenes with Reuben sad and wondering why Erik would be so cruel to him after he was trying to be so good. The zombies almost never show up and could have been cut out entirely and the third book is almost entirely Erik and Reuben on the run and very little what made the first two books decent like I’m three books deep and here for the couple fuck your coup ďétat show me the riding crop and hoofs baby giddy up 🐎🐎🐎🐎

Must read!

I can tell this one is going to stick with me for a while. These books are a great read. I highly recommend them. The whole post-apocalyptic/Steampunk/alt-universe setting was awesome. The characters are really interesting. Not all good, but not all bad. They each had their dark side and their good side. They made mistakes and they were well rounded. Which I loved. The story takes place in different settings over time so it doesn't get monotonous. The vast majority of the BDSM scenes were super hot. I love most of the really kinky stuff in BDSM stories. Multiple partner, exhibitionism, ABDL (there is no ABDL in this book. But I've read others that I liked), puppy play, you name it I love it.

But I was disappointed in the scene with Lord Satan. It was WAY over the line for me. I really was looking forward to it and it mostly just made me nauseous. It DOES turn out okay, which I was really glad about because I don't like horror. But it was soooo not sexy for me. I don't even have the right parts and it just made my bits want to crawl farther up in. *shudders*.

Sometimes the story is dark and gritty, and sometimes it's bright and extravagant. The end wasn't what I expected. It's a pretty good ending, but their world ends up a little to domesticated. The story reminds me of The Great Gatsby a little bit, but kinkier and happier. It was kind of a bittersweet HEA for me. But it is an HEA.

Entertaining and intense

I loved this book. It made me shiver at a few scenes. Beautifully written with amazingly complex characters that grab your attention. I loved Rueben/Copper and Erik.

This is a great series. You have three books and two bonus stories. I highly recommend that you read this collection, but make sure you have an open mind about different kinks.
