As winter sets in, the students of Dover Academy have one thing on their minds--the Snow Ball, Dover's annual holiday dance. For Chloe, Mimi and Ruth, the Snow Ball is a chance to show off their expensive new dresses and cement their status as the most popular girls at school. But, for Kat, it's the cause of much stress and anxiety. To go to the dance, she'll have to tutor Chloe in science. This could be the start of Dover's most unlikely friendship, but what happens when it's put to the test? TOKYOPOP is the leading North American publisher of manga. Alex de Campi is a New York-based writer with an extensive backlist of critically-acclaimed graphic novels including Eisner-nominated heist noir Bad Girls (Simon & Schuster) and Twisted Romance (Image Comics). Her most recent book was her debut prose novel The Scottish Boy (Unbound). She lives with her daughter, their cat, and a Deafblind pit bull named Tango.
Who's the Artful Dodger, the mysterious school thief? We don't know yet, but they've stolen yet another thing in this volume and Kat and Mouse are on the case. Here's the first volume that ends on a cliffhanger. They're allowed to do that, since this is the penultimate book: the mystery should be solves in the fourth installment. It's starting to bug me that none of the characters get any character development. I know this is aimed at a young audience, but if the Japanese can do it, then so can OEL authors. Other than that, I have no qualms. Kat & Mouse is harmless as can be.
This one ends in the middle of the adventure -- the girls find outfits and go to the winter dance, where there is a mystery. But instead of solving the mystery, the book ends. Luckily I checked out 3 & 4 together.
I like the friendship of the girls, and the science they use to solve mysteries. Since they didn't solve the mystery in this one, we get the science when Kat tutors a schoolmate to make money to buy her dress. It's not quite as fun.
American style manga. Kat Foster and Mouse Huang are friends at a New Hampshire private school brought together as much by their "outsiderness" as by mutual like. They don't think or act like the other kids, just because. The worst of the others are the "chloes" super snobby jr. hugh uber-bitches (my word). There is also a thief running around w/a fondness for Dickens. There are lousy parents, bullies, stuck up kids, a mystery and a great story about friendship in this book, i'm looking forward to reading the other volumes.
Whew! The story's really getting going now! de Campi does a great job creating characters that are three-dimensional, so even the girls in the Chloe clique are shown as being more complex that they try to present themselves as being. I ended up having to delete this series from my library because it wasn't circ'ing and just read it on a whim because it looked interesting. I just placed a hold on the fourth volume because this one ends on a cliffhanger!
Kat & Mouse are back and Scooby Dooing around Dover Academy. They attend Snow Ball, but the mean girls make the dance unbearable and queen meanie Chloe's necklace is stolen. Kat & Mouse aren't any closer to finding the thief/Artful Dodger/culprit.
i like this book because it is about two friends are like detectives and try to find out who is the school thief. At the snowball formal a girl takes her moms necklace and the school thief stole the necklace. It is up to them to find out who the school thief is.
