About the author

Jean-Pierre Vernant was a French historian and anthropologist, specialist in ancient Greece. Influenced by Claude Lévi-Strauss, Vernant developed a structuralist approach to Greek myth, tragedy, and society which would itself be influential among classical scholars. He was an honorary professor at the Collège de France.

Born in Provins, France, Vernant at first studied philosophy, receiving his agrégation in this field in 1937.

A member of the Young Communists (Jeunes Communistes), Vernant joined the French Resistance during World War II and was a member of Libération-sud (founded by Emmanuel d'Astier). He later commanded the French Interior Forces (FFI) in Haute-Garonne under the pseudonym of "Colonel Berthier." He was a Companion of the Liberation. After the war, he remained a member of the French Communist Party until 1969.

He entered the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in 1948 and, under the influence of Louis Gernet, turned to the study of ancient Greek anthropology. Ten years later, he became director of studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). In 1971 he was professor in the University of São Paulo. This visit was also an act of protest that he made with François Châtelet against the brazilian military government (dictatorship).

He was a member of the French sponsorship committee for the Decade for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. He supported the funding organisation Non-Violence XXI.

He was awarded the CNRS gold medal in 1984. In 2002, he received an honorary doctorate at the University of Crete.

Vernant died a few days after his 93rd birthday in Sèvres.

Vernant made like Greek mythology. His style is dazzling and the essay is read like a novel. He arrives all to make enthralling.
On this book I will speak about Gorgo which had been studies in other Vernant'swork. Gorgo kills by the glance. In a masterly demonstration, he shows us that the gorgo is the dark share that each one has in him. I used a sentence of this book in my novel. It is the first index of the brittleness of Juliette.
To decipher Greek mythology with Vernant, it is to find solutions for our life from them.

Un'interessante e breve approfondimento sul concetto di alterità della morte nelle figure di Artemide e, in particolare, di Medusa. A mio avviso è necessario avere delle conoscenze pregresse sull'argomento per capire appieno questo libro.

What can I write about this masterpiece of interpretation? I read it at a time, I was learning French, in Institute Francaise. Another french book on "alterite". The notion of alterity from the Platonic Sophist projected on Ancient Greek Mythology and Religion. The absolute alterity, of death, in the eye of Meduce, from which only the monster-killer Perseus can escape.
The face of Meduce haunted the Greeks, a classic image for every man.
Excellent language, with the precice, suitable words.

A Morte nos Olhos - A Figura do Outro na Grécia Antiga, de Jean-Pierre Vernant, é um livro que fala sobre a alteridade na Grécia Antiga, através de seus mitos. Vernant fala que ao encarar o outro nos olhos, os gregos viam sua própria finitude, e com isso lidavam com a existência daquilo que escapava ao seu controle. Para mim, a parte mais interessante do livro é quando o autor apresenta e esmiúça o mito da Medusa (e das Górgonas) explicando alguns sentidos relacionados com essa figura. Ele também traz outros capítulos abordando a figura da deusa da caça Ártemis e do deus subterrâneo e do Tártaro, Hades. De toda forma, como este é um livro que fala sobre "a morte nos olhos", ele se foca muito mais na figura da Medusa e suas outras apresentações e suas relações e metáforas no mundo grego. Vernant ainda refuta a interpretação freudiana de que a Medusa representa a castração porque essa interpretação estaria relacionada a uma visão contemporânea e não daquilo que os gregos pensavam ao utilizar a figura da Medusa em suas heráldicas, por exemplo.

Vernant es un poeta. No sé si él lo habrá sabido no sé si esa habrá sido su intención pero es un poeta. De entrada yo le tengo un cariño gigantesco porque fue gracias a él y sus textos que me empecé a interesar en profundidad por la antigüedad clásica lo que eventualmente conllevó que cambie de carrera o sea Vernant alteró irreversiblemente el transcurso de MI VIDA. Pero más allá de eso me parece que este pequeño librito está logradísimo y presenta una lectura re mil original e interesante sobre la religión y las estructuras sociales de los griegos. Genuinamente me llegó al corazón y me conmovió mucho!!!

Vernant's thinking is astonishing because it delivers incredible insights into the mind and culture of Ancient Greeks and because his prose is always clear and precise.

The chapter on Artemis in this collection of essays and articles is wonderful and has made me fall in love, when I was a student, with Greek ancient history.
