According the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety disorders are reaching epidemic proportions. In a given year, 17% of Americans will feel the effects of a panic attack. Anxiety-related issues are the number one mental health problem among women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men. Between 1997 and 2004, Americans more than doubled their spending on anti-anxiety medications from $900 million to $2.1 billion.
We are tense. Why? Change is one reason. Sociologists speculate the world has changed more in the last thirty years than it has in the last three hundred! Every day seems to bring new change and threats. We also face personal challenges—job loss, cancer, divorce, addiction, bankruptcy. Add to personal challenges those of a global nature imported into our lives every few seconds thanks to smart phones, TVs, and computer screens. In our parents' day, the nightly news caught them up on world events. Now it is a matter of minutes.
Anxiety just comes with life. However, as God's Word reveals, it doesn’t have to dominate life. In this five-session video-based Bible study (DVD/digital video sold separately), bestselling author Max Lucado looks at seven admonitions from the apostle Paul in Philippians 4:4–8 that lead to one wonderful promise: "The peace of God which surpasses all understanding." As he unpacks each verse, he shows how God is ready to give comfort to help us face the calamities in life, view bad news through the lens of sovereignty, discern the lies of Satan, and tell ourselves the truth. We can be anxious for nothing, and discover true peace from God that surpasses all human understanding.
Sessions include:

I highly recommend this DVD / workbook combo - so good for pointing us towards Christ and receiving the peace of God which passes all understanding. I love Max Lucado's pastoral heart, wisdom, and practical teaching from the Bible.
I cannot say enough about this book. It really helped me with my own image of myself. Max Lucado puts it wonderfully when he asks the reader to ponder what they think of themselves and then asks how would they feel if their child told them they felt like that. It really opened my eyes to how much pain I must cause God when I have such a neg self image. It helped me put into perspective God's unending, never changing love for me!
reading and listening to this book realised that God can heal anxiety. Jesus also underwent anxiety and what he did, he simply prayed to the father. worry not, don't be afraid - these are the affirmative words that the bible reminds us in both old and new testament. This is because, God loves us and with loving God, who cares for us, there will not be any anxiety. lovely Book with a thought provoking story narration, enabling us to be grateful and gratitude to the God who has created us.
This book is the study guide to the excellent video series Anxious for Nothing by Max Lucado. It is based on Philippians 4:4-8 and comes from Lucado's book Anxious for Nothing. If you are troubled by anxiety (and who isn't?) I highly recommend this video series and/or the book Anxious for Nothing.
Had I known there were reflection/discussion questions in the back of the actual book, I probably wouldn't have ordered the study guide. It's nice to have some space to write down points of interest from the videos, but I didn't find the rest of it particularly helpful.
This study guide was quite helpful as I participated in FaithGateway's Online Bible Study which featured the accompanying book and videos. I sometimes don't finish the study guides because they have too much homework for me to keep up with. However, I finished every page of this one.
It reads like a slightly improved Joel Osteen sermon. It's man centered self help baptized in Christian lingo leading to legalism. The gospel gets a token mention but is easily irrelevant according to the help Lucado offers.
Max Lucado does it again! So much knowledge that God has blessed him with. I love reading his books and how all the great nuggets he blesses us with. Thank you so much!
This study guide was an excellent choice for my book study for church during the pandemic. It gave us many things to talk about and relate to how God is there in the more difficult times.
Again Max Lucado delivers. I actually downloaded the Audible version and thoroughly enjoyed it, feeling at once encouraged and challenged. I need to stop letting the negativity drive me for certain.
