BRAVE BEAUTY is a devotional for tween girls. It has a brief story that tweens can relate to, an application where they answer a short quiz or write thoughts or do something that relates to the devotion and concludes with a brief prayer.

My daughters both really enjoyed reading this devotional, discussing it, and discovering the ways they feel the same and where they differ in how they handle things. We also had fun discussing some of the devotions.

A great devotional book for tween girls to do alone, with a sister or a friend, or with a mom, grandma, or aunt.

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

I love the content as a professional counselor who works with kids who struggle with fear and anxiety. This empowers them to truly be brave and I sometimes scary world. What's even more is my daughter who is 10 years old thanks not only is the book is beautiful but has continued to read it and she often start something and doesn't finish it. Finally the way it is set up it is easy to read in small pieces of time and use as a group study which I plan to do in our neighborhood this fall.

Lynn Cowell’s new book for young girls titled “Brave Beauty” has been enormously helpful to me as I recently dove headfirst into the world of homeschooling.

The hardback book is divided into 100 mini-chapters, the perfect length for a quick morning devotional with my daughter.

Lynn’s writing is easy to digest, personable, and engaging.

My daughter especially enjoys the quizzes peppered throughout the book, and I have been using the “Becoming Brave” questions at the end of each chapter as journaling prompts for her.

This book covers many important topics including salvation, identity, body image, friendship, self-confidence, and embracing our God-given purpose.

The best part is it takes just minutes per day to complete a chapter, and the book is a starting point for many important conversations between mother and daughter.

Although I think it’s best to go through this book together, it is definitely written in such a way that a young girl could easily navigate it herself.

Part of the reason I pulled my daughter out of the traditional school setting was I noticed patterns of self-doubt, insecurity, and anxiety.

She was struggling with friendships and overwhelmed by the high expectations of her educators.

It’s so important for us, as parents, to teach our children who God says they are and help them establish a sense of beauty and worth that is not dependent on the acceptance or rejection they receive from others.

Helping them establish a routine of daily Bible study at a young age is a great way to prepare them for the uncertainty and confusion the teen years bring.

Brave Beauty is helping me do just that!

I have so enjoyed incorporating this beautiful book into my new homeschool routine, and highly recommend the book as an invaluable tool to help the young girl in your life find the faith to seek after God above all else.

Disclosure: I received an advanced copy from the publisher for review purposes.

About the Book:

What will my life be like? Who will I be? Whether girls put these concerns into words or struggle anxiously with these thoughts, during this season of change, girls have questions. Sometimes these questions also come with fears and they need a safe place to process these fears. From Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker and blogger, Lynn Cowell, comes Faithgirlz Brave Beauty: Finding the Fearless You. For girls 8-12, Brave Beauty brings tweens 100 courage-building moments to reflect on Scripture and find confidence in God, rather than in someone, some place, or some thing, as culture will all-too-soon tell them to. Lynn will also prepare girls to:

Overcome confidence-defeating thoughts and stand on who Jesus says she is.
Shape her self-worth on Christ and overcome the temptation base it on environmental factors.
Build a strong foundation to face the fickle and flippant opinions of others.
Find approval of herself even when she lacks the acceptance of others.
Find security by turning to Christ as she steps through the exciting, yet scary world of growing up
Formatted as theme-based mini chapters, these moments can be read as one-a-days, one-a-weeks, or at the reader’s own pace. Simple and empowering, Lynn’s voice is relatable and conversational, making it easy for girls to feel like they’re spending time with a friend. This inspirational read will be set as a gorgeously foil decorated hardcover, with beautifully formatted pages in line with the well-known and loved Faithgirlz look, and with an easy-reference index to look up any topic.

My Review:

Young girls, these days have it so incredibly hard. They are forced to compete with the world around them. This is not how it should be. They have to be something they were not created to be just to feel like they have accomplished something in this life. They sell themselves and its heartbreaking. They are God's and God's alone and He loves them deeper and longer than ever imagined. They need people that will show them this and point them in that direction. HIS direction.

In Brave Beauty, young preteen girls need positive reinforcement to push them harder and farther than they ever dreamed possible. This comes through the things we put into them. Brave Beauty is a way to get some goodness into them. Through a series of 100 different mini chapters your young daughter, grand daughter or friend will receive some good lessons from author, Lynn Cowell.

Do It Scared, was my most favorite topic. It talks about be being scared but doing it anyway. Many times we are put in positions where God wants us to shine for His glory. Many times we fail just by not going through with it. But the author encourages us to do it afraid is better than not doing it at all.

BRAVE BEAUTY came to me at just the right time! Both my girls are grown ups now, but I have a young girl in my life and I will absolutely love going through this book with her. She is in a vulnerable place in life, and working through the "100 moments" will strengthen her heart and be a delight to mine. What a great resource!

Brave Beauty: Finding the Fearless You by Lynn Cowell has been a blessing to my tween daughter. She and I have been enjoying going through this devotional together. The book itself is beautiful and the chapters are short enough for our busy girls to read at least one a day and find encouragement and Biblical truth to help guide them through this ever changing season in their lives. The tween years are not easy, but Lynn shares personal stories, questions to get the girls thinking, quizzes to allow the girls to discover themselves and who they are in Christ and so much more. My daughter loves the courageous calls at the end of each chapter. This devotional touches upon so many different areas our girls will encounter and question as their body changes and peers challenge them. She covers areas on worth, acceptance, the changing body, purpose, being true to who you are, truth, courage, confidence and so much more. All areas our girls need to hear truth and use to build themselves up and allow them to stay true to who God created them uniquely to be. I can't recommend this book enough. I am gifting a few copies away to some special girls.

I was blessed to receive an advanced reader's copy of Brave Beauty in exchange for my honest review.

This book is a MUST READ for anyone - moms, grandmoms, aunts, godmothers, and everyone else that is involved with raising and coming alongside of our younger generation of girls. I love Lynn Cowell's style of writing - it's almost as if she is there in the room speaking truth to your girl's heart on each & every page! We live in a world where young girls are looking for ways to "fit in" and "belong," exploring who they are and how their lives matter. The time is now to equip our young girls with who they are in Christ and how their lives matter for Kingdom purposes. I honestly wish this book was written many years ago, when I was a young girl. What a joy it would have been for me to walk through the journey of this book with my mom by my side. What a blessing it would have been to learn the message of this book at a tender young age, before being deceived by what the world had to offer. This book is life-changing, and I promise it will deepen the heartstrings between you & the younger girls in your life. Even more importantly, it will grow your girl's love for Jesus as she learns of & rests in His unconditional love for her! Highly recommend!

As a tween mom, I find it hard to find books that we can read and learn from together. Brave Beauty is geared toward 8-12 year olds but I enjoyed it as well. As moms, we too struggle with the same issues our girls do and fight to not show it. That's hard! I want to show my girl how to be brave. Because y'all, middle school is going to be tough, I know, and I want to equip her the best I can and show her how God sees her and that's what matters.

All in all, Brave Beauty is a devotional that I know we will reread over and over.

This is such a great confidence boosting devotional book for girls of all ages! It's a devotional style book aimed at tweens but great for teens or younger girls too! It's important that our girls have their confidence rooted in someone/thing eternal (Christ!) and not something temporary and fluctuating of this world. With an attractive cover, and friendly language and layout - it's sure to be a hit with any young girl in your life! My ten year old daughter loved the Becoming Brave mini challenge points in each section. They gave her something to DO, an action point to focus on and practice.

I wish I'd had Brave Beauty for my daughters when they were tweens. This is a wonderful book, filled with wisdom that will help young girls in those formative, and often difficult, middle school years. The authors voice is conversational and never talks down to the reader. She shares stories and situations that will help the reader sort through their own life. At the end of each chapter there is a courageous call that ties up what the chapter shared and challenges girls to be courageous and brave. She also includes some quizzes and challenges that every girl will love. If you have or know a tween girl, this would be a perfect gift to share. I highly recommend Brave Beauty. I received this book for free.

This Faithgirlz book brings tweens 100 courage-building devotions, allowing them to reflect on Scripture and find confidence in God.

Filled with 100 mini-chapters by Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker Lynn Cowell, this book helps tween girls navigate those rocky years and find answers to big questions by growing confident in God.

All growing girls have moments when they struggle and wonder what's ahead, or where they fit in, or what they're good at and this companion guide seeks to empower girls by providing inspiration on many of those tough topics:

See who God says she is by overcoming confidence-defeating thoughts.
Learn to shape self-worth on Christ and not base it on environmental factors.
Build a strong foundation to face the fickle and flippant opinions of others.
Find approval of herself even when she lacks the acceptance of others.
Find security by turning to Christ as she steps through the exciting, yet scary world of growing up.

Not only does this book help girls learn more about God and how He helps us, but it uses plenty of examples of how people of the Bible handled the hard things, as well.

Girls will feel like they're spending time with a friend as they read God's words and learn how they can become fearless and brave in today's world of ups and downs. The readings are perfect for daily devotions, weekly studies, or even a resource to turn to when faced with a particular struggle.

(There's a topical index in the back!)

This book isn't just meant to sit on a shelf - it's very interactive!

Besides the main text, chapters contains prayers, quizzes, journaling prompts and room to write as well as suggested activities.

The book's format includes plenty of simple illustrations in shades of blue and grey that make the inside just as appealing as the colorful, foil-decorated cover.

Because this book is so strongly targeted at tween girls, I feel it would be best for young ladies in the 8-12 age range. It would make a perfect birthday gift for a special girl in your life!

This is a great book for teen or pre-teen girls but, as an adult woman, I loved it myself and actually found so much of it helpful for some of the struggles I face.

This book is, first of all, so pretty! I love all the special touches inside like you see above. Flowers, and butterflies adorn the pages and make it a visual joy. Better than that, though, the information inside is really a joy for the soul.

Each day there is a little story to be read and then a section called "Becoming Brave" (see the picture above). There might be a question or a little challenge in this section for you to do. If it's a question, the author has provided lines inside the box to answer, which I loved. Some pages had a "Getting To Know You" section and this was really great as it lets the reader discover how they feel about things. This section has a multiple choice answer area for you to chose what fits closely with how you feel. I think this is really helpful for a young girl.

Finally, at the end of each story is the "Courageous Call" box where there is a prayer to the Lord regarding whatever was discussed in that mini chapter. This lets the girl know that God is with her no matter what she may be facing.

There are different sections in this book dealing with things that girls (and even women!) might deal with like - My Worth - I Can Be Me - or I Can Know He is Always With Me. Each section was such a delight to read and such an encouragement! I love how Lynn always points to God as our friend and that He loves us and created us to be who we are.

I really loved this book and highly recommend it. Putting this into the hands of a pre-teen or teen girl would help them to see how much God values them as they are. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

My Review of Brave Beauty

Sweet Encouragement for 'Tween Girls

Brave Beauty is so beautifully written. It's a wonderful devotional for 8-12 year old girls, but is written in a conversational style. Brave Beauty helps girls connect with God through journaling spaces, prayers and practical application. It's written to be a devotional companion and personal book for each girl, so they can have a record of their faith journey. Brave Beauty is a book that girls will turn to again and again.
Girls will enjoy devotional entries that encourage them to know God-who He is and how He can help them. They will also learn to depend on God, trusting Him to guide them. Girls will learn about what God says about them in His Word, and that whatever they are going through, matters to God. Looking at people throughout the Bible, girls will see how they faced difficult situations, and God took care of them.
I truly enjoyed Brave Beauty myself. I appreciate Lynn Cowell's friendly style, as a conversation between friends.
The truths and life principles contained in Brave Beauty are relevant to any age. Girls (and older girls, too!) will find that courage, confidence, and beauty are rooted in God. As girls know God more, they will understand how deeply He loves and cares about them; and because He does, they are brave, courageous, confident, and beautiful.
I very highly recommend Brave Beauty. I know the girls in my life will be blessed by it. I am ordering a copy for myself, too.

*Disclaimer: I am blessed to have been able to read and review Brave Beauty. I received an Advanced Reader's Copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. The opinion stated is my own. I have not been compensated in any way.*

For all the young girls who wish to be brave and feel they don't have what it takes, Brave Beauty, is a hardcover book of 100 mini chapters to highlight just how brave you really are. Lynn Cowell takes her young reader on a biblical journey highlighting everyday situations where a girl can muster her bravery.

Appropriately subtitled, Finding the Fearless You, Cowell presents her readers with mini quizzes where girls answer short questions about themselves, mini journaling opportunities to work out getting to know themselves, and mini "Courageous Call" sections to pray out loud.

My favorite chapter was Chapter 30, "Gorgeous Jar." Cowell writes about her daughter's flowers and pots. Her daughter doesn't keep up with the cleaning the pots or wanting newer ones. Cowell points out that the pot is not what is important. The contents of the pot are what matters.

This chapter reminded me of a beautiful Chinese folktale called The Cracked Pot. God always sees us for who we are on the inside and not what we can show of ourselves on the outside. We hold living water inside of us because of who He is.

Brave Beauty is a wonderful book to read with your daughters, granddaughters, or gift to a young girl needing to see the brave in herself.

I recommend this book to any young girl between the ages of 8 and 14 who want to draw nearer to Christ and find the bravery they so long to see within themselves. Because of how short the chapters are, they lend well to short attention spans while packing them full of wise, timely stories. You will even encounter biblical stories like that of Nicodemus to parallel the mini chapters.

This is a great gift for a birthday, Christmas, middle school graduation or a young girl coming into her bravery!

An Exceptional Devotional for Tween Girls

Girls are told to be brave and find themselves. This isn’t an easy task in today’s busy world. This devotional gives a girl a chance to take time to figure out who she is. The tone of the book is conversational. It’s like having an older friend to talk to.

The book is full of stories and insights from the author’s growing up years. These are stories a tween can relate to and make the book personal. There are also quizzes and space for the girls to respond to questions. The questions are designed to help her think about who she is and what she wants.

The book is divided into 100 chapters. If taken a day at a time, the devotionals cover about three months. However, they can be used more slowly. The content focuses on areas important to young girls, school, family, friends, and, of course, Jesus.

I highly recommend this book. A young girl would love it. The book itself is lovely, a pleasure to read. It also gives a chance for a mother or grandmother to read the book with the girl and talk about the content. The content could also be used in more formal situations. It could form the basis for discussions in a Sunday school class, for example.

I received this book from Handlebar Publishing for this review.

This lovely little devotional for girls has a ton of appeal. Not does it have that awesome Faithgirlz cover, it also has some pretty awesome devotionals to encourage young girls to find their confidence and identity in Christ. It's interactive, has questions, stories, prayers, and much more. It's about learning to be themselves, but also learning to be like Christ, changing if needed. It's about being courageous, overcoming, and standing up!

The stories were good, and thought provoking. They will draw in the girls and get their attention. They include Scriptures, but there is no Scripture reading suggestion included. That was probably the only thing that I would have liked to see included. I feel like a really good devotional should include some Scripture reading. But this is still a great book, and I am excited to be able to pass it on to my daughter.

I received this book from Handlebar and Thomas Nelson to read. I was not asked to review positively. All opinions are my own.

As a counselor, I am always looking for books for the tweens that come to my office. I shared this book with the youth pastor of our church to also read. We both agreed that this book was a step above any other devotional we have in our resource room. I am excited that Lynn wrote this book for this vulnerable group that is often overlooked but who are on the front line of the battles in todays secular society. School, bullying, friends, and most of the issues that girls 8-13 face are covered in this book. I love the format which allows girls to turn to the page that covers the issue she is most currently facing. There are 100 faith building devotions that could easily be used in a teaching format as well. Thank you Lynn for a wonderful faith building book. I would recommend this book to anyone who works with tween girls.

This was a wonderful book for my four tween girls. It helped them to grow in their relationship with God while also teaching them to love themselves as God has created them. The mini chapters were perfect, not too long and not too short so all my girls, who are at very different reading levels, were able to stay engaged. The chapters also provided us with some great topics for deeper conversations, as a group and individually. This was my first time really doing a study with my girls so this was a perfect choice, especially with all the peer pressure girls face today.
